After collaborations with Mos Def (1998's Black Star) and Hi-Tek (2000's Reflection Eternal), underground journeyman Talib Kweli finally emerges fully solo with Quality. As an MC, Kweli is still as incisive as ever--his distinctive, darting flow stabs its way across every song and, as one of hip-hop's better thinkers, he covers a wide range of moods and ideas. As a verbal ass-whupper, Kweli unloads on songs like "Rush," "Shock Body," and "Guerrilla Monsoon Rap" (featuring the Roots' Black Thought and Pharoahe Monch), but he takes things much further than just the lyricist's lounge. "Get By," produced beautifully by Kayne West, is the conscious hustler's anthem, while "Where Do We Go" muses on death as thoughtfully and introspectively as "Joy" (with Mos Def) delves into the wonders of birth. "The Proud" tackles American jingoism in a time of terror, providing a much needed dose of skepticism when patriotic sentimentalism has free reign. Though Kweli's thoughts are coherent throughout, Quality as a whole lacks a certain cohesion--there's no single guiding vision that glues all the pieces together, and the album's production-by-ensemble doesn't help. This is a solid album no question, but especially compared to ambitious contemporaneous concept albums by peers such as Common and the Roots, Quality feels unexpectedly conventional--a strong collection of songs in need of a unifying force. --Oliver WangCustomer Reviews:

This album is nothing but brilliance, lyrically, vocals, beats, subject, etc. Talib continues to produce quality work, as this album shows. Clever artist, with mad skills.
My fav tracks are pretty much everyone of em. If i had to pick one it would have to be 'the proud', and 'stand to the side'. Buy this album if you dont have it. Much recommended. Checkout his other album "Beautiful Struggle".

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
The thrill of invention never stops on this first full-length album from Jurassic 5. Coming out of L.A.'s kinetic hip-hop underground, the multitalented combo whips up an irresistible flow of charisma and keeps the fun at a high-voltage level. J5 can pivot on a dime from one style to the next--street-corner barbershop, turntable friction, or kick-ass swing. But the constant focus is on the essentials of the art: Quality Control fuses fantastic wordplay and MC skills with a killer grab bag of beats. It's the achievement of J5 to look back in a way so fresh it shines a light ahead. --Thomas MayAmazon.com
L.A.-based Jurassic 5 have unearthed the lost art of flow. With a style reminiscent of the Native Tongues, J5 delivers one of the most consistent rap albums in recent memory. Cuts like "The Influence" and "Great Expectations" exhibit a wonderfully organic quality that could help us all to forget the tired rap formulas of money, hoes, and gats. Comprised of four MC's and two DJs (DJ Nu-Mark and the legendary Cut Chemist), J5 is near Ellingtonian in size for a hip-hip troupe. The interplay between the members reeks of old school, the place where rap sounds honest and evolves as an art form. As well it should, because J5 aren't new to hip-hop; after all, they've been "rockin' since the '84 Fresh Fest." --Marc CalhounCustomer Reviews:
SO much better than what you hear on the radio.......2006-07-12
As you can obviously see, I was extremely impressed. I have become SO sick of today's hip-hop...It's no wonder all the punk rock kids at my school hate rap so much. They judge the entire genre on what they hear on the radio...GARBAGE. It's pretty sad how such a good genre of music has gone so far downhill over the past few years...
But this review is not meant to trash modern mainstream hip-hop, it's to praise this cd.
The first thing I noticed was the damn catchy beats. They are so original, and sound very different from one another, however, they all maintain that classic old-school style. The second thing I noticed was how well they flowed as a group. You would think that 4 MCs all rapping together would sound kinda choppy, but they take turns with the mic, and the transaction between each MC sounds clean and well-executed. What's more, they are very unified, and sound like one person when they rap in unison. Finally, their lyrics are intelligent, and don't praise money, gats, hoes, and all the other things hip-hop is criticized for.
So if you love old-school rap, or rap in general, this cd is a definate must-have. My favorite songs are "The Influence", "Great Expectations", "Quality Control", "Monkey Bars", "Jurass Finish First", and "Game".
Enjoy =)

A beautiful collection of great Jewish Music. Classics by Ernest Bloch and Max Bruch, mixed with rarely heard gems by Maurice Ravel, Zavel Zilberts, Jacob Wasilkovsky, and David Meyerowitz. "Wie Shlecht es is Ohn Gelt", a Yiddish Theatre gem, is alone worth the price of admission for its mixture of pathos and humor. The songs by Zilberts are an important and beautiful part of the Jewish music legacy that must be heard.Customer Reviews:

Encore! Encore!.......2004-01-13
On this CD, cellist Richard Locker, accompanied by Susan Walters on piano, brings together 12 classical Jewish pieces, some well-known and others not so, in an absolutely magnificent performance -- so beautiful, that it literally brought tears to my eyes. The CD starts out with a niggun (Hasidic tune) by Ernest Bloch, then moves into to the dark, somber strains of Max Bruch's "Kol Nidre." From there it rises in mood, to end with a playful Yiddish theater piece, "Wie schecht is ohne Gelt" (How awful it is to be without money!) Included is the rarely heard "Meditation Hebraique" by Bloch, which he dedicated to Pable Casals, and a trio of pieces by the lesser-known composer, Zavel Zilberts (1881-1949), who directed the Choral Society of New York and played with the Metropolitan Opera. All of this is performed on a cello made by Nicolo Gagliano, dated 1780. To hear such a fine old instrument played by a talented, sensitive musician is truly a mechayah! (pleasure)

Rump shakin goodness.......2005-05-07
Some of my favorite dance songs when I was in my 20's .......2005-03-18
1. Informer by Snow: Not something I ever remember dancing to at clubs, just remember it being all over the radio at the time and getting tired of hearing it.
2. Ditty by Paperboy: Same as Track 1, thankfully we get past these 2 tunes early and move on to the TRUE dance music.
3. Shoop by Salt n' Pepa: I love this song, however, the mix here is not the version I prefer.
4. More & More by Captain Hollywood Project: A great example of the euro-dance music to come out of Germany during this period. Not only a dance hit, but also went to #17 on the Billboard Hot 100.
5. I'm Gonna Get You by Bizarre Inc.: A fun and lively dance tune, and the mix between the previous track & this track is flawless.
6. The Key, The Secret by Urban Cookie Collective: Another lively, bouncy dance tune like Track 5. One of my favorites from my club days.
7. Give it Up by The Goodmen: Another great euro-dance tune that uses whistle blowing and drumline, which was very fashionable in dance music at the time.
8. Talkin About Love by BKS: I don't remember hearing this track "back in the day", but it is a good dance track none-the-less.
9. Supermodel by RuPaul: Gotta love Ru. He has had other good songs since this one, but none have been this fabulous.
10. No Limit by 2 Unlimited: Another sub-genre of dance music during this period, rave. My uptight cousin used to call this kind of music "communist music", but I loved bouncing up & down on the dance floor to this and 2 Unlimited's other hits.
11. Whoomp! There it Is by Tag Team: Ugh...the real dud of this CD.
12. Take me in Your Arms by Li'l Suzy: Another sub-genre, free-style. Free-style was winding down it's popularity and originality by this point, but a good song.
13. Happy by Legacy of Sound: Back to the bouncy, frantic sound heard on tracks 5 & 6. My #1 favorite track on this CD.
14. Forget me Nots by Ava Cherry: I don't remember hearing this remake of Patrice Rushen's classic at the clubs, and although it is good, it does not come near Patrice's excellent version.
15. Show me Love by Robin S: Diva vocals to blow you away. Went to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100.
16. Finally by CeCe Peniston: Another diva who had a string of hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including this one which also went to #5.
17. This is It by Dannii Minogue: Dannii never achieved the stateside success that her sister Kylie has, and this track explains why.
Yes, there are a few duds here and some songs that are just ok, but the awesome dance tracks ("Happy", "More & More", "I'm Gonna Get You", "The Key, The Secret", "Give it Up", "Show me Love", and "Finally") well make it worth buying.
Classics from back in the day!.......2004-05-06
Excellent dance album!.......2004-04-15
"Informer" by Snow is a sadly forgotten classic from the early 1990s and has a New Jack Swing and strong old school hip-hop rhythm and excellent melody, all of which are totally absent in today's rap music! I still enjoy this song a lot. "Ditty" by Paper Boy is a lot more urban and has excellent rhyming and great beats as well. Both of these songs were fun themes back in 1993 when they were popular as I was in a lot of tournaments around this time in my life and these songs hold a lot of memory for me. "Shoop" by Salt N Pepa is a risqué danceable hip-hop classic that was like the forerunner to what TLC would do very shortly afterwards. While not on the raunchy level of "Let's Talk About Sex", this song is indeed on the wild side if you ask me. "More and More" by Captain Hollywood is a dynamite classic. The song begins with electronic sound effects and a haunting ambient intro comes and then the song becomes a highly radiant techo-dance number with some macho rapping too. In a lot of ways, this was like the precursor to Real McCoy's "Another Night" that came in the mid to late 1990s as it has some of the dark undertones of that track. I love this song a lot. "I'm Gonna Get You" is another highly energetic and fun dance song with really excellent keyboards and frantic keyboard rhythm. "The Key The Secret" by Urban Cookie Collective is a somewhat strange dance track with few vocals and fun hip-hop rhythm. I'll continue this review later.
Very interesting, it's a must if you like to party........2000-07-12

When this Jerome Kern (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (lyrics and libretto, based on Edna Ferber's novel) show premiered in 1927 it powerfully changed the course of musicals by being about something: the sweep of 40 years of American history, racial tensions and relations (including miscegenation), even spousal and parental abandonment. It also featured some of the most splendid songs ever written for the legitimate stage, both building on the operetta and music-hall past, and presaging plot-advancement and character-development numbers (which took another quantum leap in Oklahoma). "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You?" and "Ol' Man River" became standards almost at first hearing, and the production was a hit in spite of the controversy surrounding it. Show Boat suffered only from the lack of sophisticated recording techniques to preserve the original performances, although Helen Morgan (who played the mulatto Julie) later recorded her signature song "Bill." Three movie versions and countless stage revivals kept Show Boat alive and popular--although bowdlerized--for almost 50 years without a definitive recording. (The 1971 production, with Cleo Laine as Julie, came closest.) But it's all here, in the 1994 Toronto recording whose cast transferred almost intact to Broadway. It's a glorious rendering from start to finish, with Rebecca Luker and Mark Jacoby as good as any Magnolia and Gaylord Ravenal we're ever likely to hear. And, I'm sorry Helen and Cleo, but Lonette McKee's "Bill" (with lyrics by P G. Wodehouse) is the most wrenching rendition I've ever heard. --Robert WindelerCustomer Reviews:
Cotton Blossoms.......2006-01-06
This recording is beautiful, faithful to its period and the sound is transparent and perfectly well balanced. The voices are nicely styled and unmannered, the orchestra sounds just like it should: a pit band (unlike in so many revival recordings of great musicals that over-inflate the orchestrations with Wagnerian forces). Mark Jacoby is a fine light tenor, although a triffle thin at times; regretably, his "You Are Love" interval jumps are strained on top. Rebeca Luker sounds pure and perfect throughout, even when refraining "fish gotta swim" after the gorgeous bluesy rendition of Lonette McKee, maybe my favourite Julie of all times (since we couldn't ever have Lady Day in the cast....) Michel Bell is a passionate, robust-voiced Joe and Gretha Boston's Queenie is marvellous; her "Mis'ry's Comin' Round" remins both the shrewish Maria and the religious Serena Robbins from "Porgy and Bess"....(again, I recall Kern's influence on Gershwin's own folk opera).
A must-have album, expertly abridged., worth every penny (and of its $10 million Livent Inc. stage production) if only for Elaine Stritch's moving, anthological performance in "Why do I Love You?".
Great Teaser...............2004-08-29
Obviously, I'm not serious about such curse, but in my opinion, this 1993 Canadian production highlights recording, is the latest "teaser" which only makes us Show Boat fans all the more curious.
This recording is an excellent edition of the Jerome Kern legendary score. Though somewhat adapted to reflect changing ideals and delivery style, the score remains as faithful as possible to the original. The cast is absolutely perfect in all areas of performance art. I wish there was more of Robert Morse's Captain Andy, because the little snippets he recieves are only enough to want to hear more. Captain Andy has the fewest singing parts in the musical than any other character, which brings me to my next point.
It's more than obvious, that Livent rushed the tempo here, in order to fit as much material possible into one single compact disc recording. Whatever the reasoning behind this, it's rather irritating upon making it's first impression. I purchased this recording many years ago at a local Tower records store and shut it off by the end of the first track, because I couldn't keep up with the incredibly fast tempo. I recall my sister and I looking at each other with our mouths wide open. Yes, it's that fast!
Well, don't let this deter you from looking for a good used copy. This fast-forward-like tempo is limited to only a few tracks, mainly ensemble numbers, while the solos and duets are left unaltered. Sadly, it took me several years to finally discover the splendor of this recording upon giving it another try back in 1998. Since then, I've nearly worn it out.
I had the pleasure of seeing this grand Harold Prince production back in 1996, when it's 1st national tour parked itself into the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. It remains my second favorite musical of all time and have since been waiting for an official full recording, with dialogue and original tempo intact. After Livent's misfortune, this is highly unlikely. Add this one to your collection at once! A must for any fan of great classic American musical theatre and a great teaser of a sampler for fans of this most neglected musical masterpiece.
one of the best SHOW BOAT cast albums.......2004-08-16
A wonderful, flawed recording.......2004-03-22
Yes, any production of SHOW BOAT should take into account historical accuracy. And yes, there are anachronisms in this recording (there are also anachronisms in the original score). But I think it's important to recall that while SHOW BOAT's plot begins in 1887, it was of course written in 1927 -- and revived by Harold Prince in 1993. This is the story of America's transition from the 19th century to the 20th, as seen through the eyes of several generations of 20th century American artists. Kern and Hammerstein did not intend their work to be a museum piece about the 1880's, nor did Prince intend his revival to be a museum piece about the 1920's. SHOW BOAT, as critic Ethan Mordden points out, is a musical that must constantly be reinterpreted and rediscovered for each successive audience, and this 1993 recording reflects that thinking. For example, the character of Julie may have been written for soprano Helen Morgan to play, but subsequent revivals have cast a belter in the role, to endow Julie with an earthiness and a contemporaneity and to contrast her with Ravenal and Magnolia's operatic grandeur.
The glory of Prince's revival, which won universal critical acclaim and a trunkful of Tonys, is that it gives SHOW BOAT its proper due as a great, groundbreaking work of American art, but it also acknowledges the problems inherent in the original book and production and tries to solve them. The character of Parthy, for example, was supposed to be a shrewish old spoilsport: that's tradition. But this production is about rediscovery, not tradition. Thus, Prince takes the song "Why Do I Love You?", originally a love duet between Magnolia and Ravenal, and reassigns it to Parthy to croon to the infant Kim. Elaine Stritch pulls it off superbly; with this brief number, she rescues the character from the trap of stereotype and turns Parthy into a complete person, full of wonder at her new role as a grandmother. Listen to Stritch's voice break with emotion as she sings "Maybe that's because you love me" -- it's a brilliantly human moment.
The major flaw of this recording is that it includes almost no spoken dialogue, except for brief passages in "I Have the Room Above Her" and the Act Two Finale. Much of the orchestral underscoring is included, though, and this seems to make the gap in between the verses of the songs all the more obvious. This elimination, in my opinion, damages the overall quality, since we lose the transitional dialogue that helps us understand some of the more complex songs like "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" and "After the Ball." The former foreshadows how Julie will be exposed as a mulatto, and eventually be abandoned by her husband; the latter shows Magnolia discovering her own strength and identity, on the eve of the 20th century, by reconnecting with her family (Hammerstein's favorite theme). But without the dialogue, "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" and "After the Ball" devolve from complex musical scenes into rather simple showtunes.
What's unfortunate is that the voices in this recording -- Mark Jacoby, Rebecca Luker, Robert Morse, Gretha Boston, Lonette McKee, and of course, Stritch -- are all well-rounded musical theatre performers with solid acting backgrounds. In particular, I wish I could have heard McKee use that rich voice to tackle the Miscegenation Scene. Certainly, these singer-actors could have handled the spoken sections better than do the glamorous opera stars of John McGlinn's comprehensive, if rather pompous, three-disc set.
One thing about this recording that takes a bit of time getting used to is the tempo at which the music is conducted. Some of the numbers sound, I swear, like they're on fast-forward. The overture, for example, clocks in at a brisk 2:47. McGlinn uses the same arrangement, with only a few additional bars of music -- but his version lasts a whole two minutes longer. The up-tempo conducting endows the score with an unusual vitality, but sometimes obscures the moments of romance and serenity.
But on the whole, the merits of this album far outweigh the flaws. I enjoy the 1993 SHOW BOAT recording very much, and recommend it to anyone who's seriously interested in the American musical theatre. Hope they bring it back into print soon; till then, have fun finding yourself a used copy.
