Maybe this music by Prince & the Revolution will never quite sound as, well, revolutionary as it did in 1984 (and nothing else has ever sounded like the extraordinary cooing and fluttering of "When Doves Cry"), but it's a pop landmark in Prince's Artist-ic career. The hit movie was really just a big-screen showcase for Prince to perform these songs (some of them in tear-the-roof-off "live" versions set in a Minneapolis club). I don't know why that warped sermonette introduces "Let's Go Crazy" (one thing you've got to love about Prince: he's always been weird), but somehow I'm glad it's there. Other highlights include the sexual scorcher "Darling Nikki" (with its crazy backwards coda) and that anthemic title tune. Don't you miss Wendy and Lisa, too? --Jim EmersonCustomer Reviews:

One thing, the greatest travesty in all of music... The title track "PURPLE RAIN" only hit #2 on the charts.
My wife of the past 10 wonderful years was my high school sweetheart at the time. She had a boyfriend and was seeing me on the side and couldn't quite break it off with him. Well we went to the Prince concert at the now "gone" Market Square Arena in Indianapolis (most famous as the site of Elvis Presley's last concert). The greatest moment was when Prince was singing "Do you want him, or do you want me, cause baby I want you" it was like he was just singing to us. I looked into her eyes and knew I would never love another like her and never have.
Buy the album, buy the Dvd, also (much harder) find the live concert VHS that has an almost 20 minute version of Purple Rain at the end of it.
Wasn't the purple "rain" at the Superbowl awesome?

Great bang for the buck.......2007-07-25
Of course, "Smoke On the Water" is here, but so are lots of other gems, including their first hit "Hush", a great reworking of Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman", and "Burn", all great tracks.
The set closes with "Knocking At Your Back Door", from "Perfect Strangers", the album that reunited the classic line-up from "Machine Head" and "Made In Japan". Ian Gillan is one of rock's great vocalists, and the best Purple ever had. He still sings for them today.
The other must-have CD is their live masterpiece "Made In Japan", with much tougher versions of "Highway Star" and "Smoke On The Water", and a real space jam on the 20 minute plus "Space Truckin'". Reacquaint yourself with this great band or introduce yourself today.

The very, very, very best?.......2007-02-02
Its title notwithstanding, this CD is a "greatest hits" compilation and not (necessarily) "The Very best", but semantics aside, there are a couple of exceptions of songs that were not issued as singles (Space Trucking and Child in Time, for instance...). I originally didn't care much for the covers of "Kentucky Woman" and "Hush", but I understood their inclusion here since those were the first hits the band scored with in the U.S (the territory this CD is meant for). But the tunes eventually grew on me, leading me to get their first 3 records.
It's a shame that no additional material from the band's second coming in the 80's could be included though, but that is simply a record company issue: the latter part of Purple's catalog was released with a different record label. In the end, this is a great compilation, and if you want to have a taste of some of Purple's best material, this is a good place to start. However, if you, like me, were looking for a more comprehensive package, including music from all the lineups (including the criminally underrated Mk IV, completely ignored here...), you might be a bit disappointed...You can always get the boxet "Shades", but... that's a different tale... But casual fans looking for nothing but the hits rejoice: here they are!!! And for roughly 8 bucks, you can't really ask for more...
Rock And Roll At Its Best.......2006-12-07
This 16 track colection collects all of Deep Purple's most popular hits, such as "Hush", "Kentucky Woman", the epic "Child In Time", "Highway Star", the legendary "Smoke On The Water" (a song that joins "Stairway To Heaven" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" as one of the echelons of overplayed classic rock anthems, which is not to say it's a bad song), "My Woman From Tokyo" and many others. The sound quality is fantastic, and the liner notes make for a really good read.
I highly recommend this collection.

On paper, this adaptation of Alice Walker's best-selling novel has all the markings of a hit. It makes Oprah Winfrey's debut as a theater producer, the libretto is by Marsha Norman (Night Mother), and the lyrics and music are by a trio of seasoned pop pros: Allee Willis (the eccentric woman behind "Neutron Dance" and the theme from Friends), Stephen Bray (who worked on such Madonna hits as "True Blue" and "Express Yourself"), and Brenda Russell (the smooth soul-jazz songstress behind "Piano in the Dark"). That team has put together a series of fairly catchy songs that may lack depth but adeptly handle various idioms like gospel ("Mysterious Ways"), R&B ("Push Da Button"), and African rhythms ("African Homeland"). Though the inspirational vibe can get a bit much, softening the edges and preventing genuine artistic complexity, The Color Purple is a great showcase for its cast. As Celie, LaChanze delivers one of her usual sensitive performances, but watch also for Elisabeth Withers-Mendes's Shug--who sings a passionate paean to Celie ("Too Beautiful for Words")--and Renée Elise Goldsberry's Nettie (duetting with LaChange on "African Homeland"). The chance to hear these women strut their stuff almost makes up for the show's weaknesses. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Having scored a massive hit with their debut album, Core, Stone Temple Pilots returned to the same sludge-filled well for Purple, only to come up with an album that's harder, more concise, and filled with thunderous, punishing riffs. Headbangers will rejoice over the grinding guitars of "Meatplow," "Vasoline," "Lounge Fly," and "Unglued," but the album reveals far more than one dimension. They back off the throttle for the hushed (though still intense) "Pretty Penny," "Big Empty" puts a respectable spin on the phrase "power ballad," and the catchy, hook-filled "Interstate Love Song" asserts itself as one of the most memorable alt-rock singles of the '90s. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:

On the second half of the album we have the very omnious and forboding song about alienation and loneliness called Big empty which is yet another great song "Time to take a ride that leaves today no conversation" this song is a classic, the next song Silver gun superman is just a straight ahead rock song which is terrific, I'm not going to describe the other songs cause I don't want to write a long review. Album Description
"Everything Is Illuminated" is the directorial debut of actor Liev Schrieber and an adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's best-selling novel. A blend of high comedy and great tragedy, the film tells the story of a young American man, played by Elijah Wood (The Lord of The Rings trilogy), who journeys to the Ukraine to find the woman whom he believes saved his grandfather from the Nazis all those years ago.The soundtrack features two new songs from high energy New York City based gypsy punks Gogol Bordello, including one track not on their current cd. (Note: Gogol Bordello's lead singer plays a role in "Everything Is Illuminated"). Also included are gypsy folk songs from Russia and the Ukraine by Leningrad, Arkadie Severmie, Csokolom and Tin Hat Trio. And finally, Paul Cantelon's ethnic score ties together this nicely cohesive soundtrack.

A wacky classic.......2007-07-18
Marvelous.......2007-06-13
1. Odessa Medley: 9/10 - Enjoyable, with fun instruments. It builds up into an intricate array of instruments and melodies, and really picks up at the end, tempting you to let it sweep you along into the movie's crazy world. A great overture to the movie.
2. Leningrad, Zvezda Rok-N-Rolla: 8/10 - Oh, the drama! Leningrad is a Russian band. All of their songs on this album are crazy and fun and fit the craziness of the movie to a T. The horns are wonderful.
3. Csokolom, Amari Szi Amari: 10/10 - Superbly catchy, with that quirky, old feel dominant in the film, this song is a laidback sort of fun. It's the only song on the album not in Ukrainian, Russian, or English: it's Hungarian. This doesn't matter, however, because it fits so perfectly with the feel of the movie.
4. Leningrad, Dikiy Muzhchina: 10/10 - I LOVE this song. It's one my favorites here. The title means "Wild Man" in Russian, and it is definitely a very wild and (dare I say it again?) fun song. The lyrics really are just plain fun to sing along to, even if you don't speak Russian. You can practically feel the energy. In fact, I just now started to sing to it again...
5. Prologue/Babushka: 9.5/10 - This is where a darker mood begins to edge in. It sinks into a waltz that is more bittersweet than tragic, and then slows down to make way for a sweeping, haunting tune. Lovely.
6. Little Jonathan/The Wall: 9/10 - Playful, but once more in a bittersweet sort of way. After awhile it switches gears, swooshing up with energy, befores changing back to that haunting feeling of "Babushka" that I like to think of as simply The Past.
7. Gogol Bordello, Bublitschki: 8/10 - Time for some fun again. This instrumental piece by an immensely talented band (actually, Eugene Hutz, who plays Alex, is the lead singer of Gogol Bordello) mixes an irresistible beat with a traditional Slavic sound.
8. The Con Artists, Peter Miser, Ya-takoy: 9/10 - This definitely brings one back to the silliness of Alex in the beginning of the film. With snippets of his unbelievably hilarious dialogue and an urban beat going in the background, you'll be sucked right in.
9. Leningrad, Malen'kiy Mal'chik: 9/10 - Great fun! Leningrad never fails to entertain with this lazy collection of horns and vocals.
10. Tin Hat Trio, Fear of the South: 8/10 - Here's a piece to relax to. It's lighthearted and fresh.
11.Paul Cantelon, River of Collections: 9/10 - With breathy strings, "River of Collections" urges you quietly but with instistence along the river of The Past.
12. Paul Cantelon, Tank Graveyard/Valse de Suzana/Dee-yed: 9.5/10 - Here is the tragedy I've been referring to. It's sad. Almost unbearably so. It sweeps you up in the conflict of the characters, teasing you with peaks at the truth before fading back into the darkness.
13. Paul Cantelon, Sunflowers: 10/10 - Ukrainian, I believe. Haunting, with strong vocals that cast a spell.
14. Paul Cantelon, War Is Love/eta-Ya: 9.5/10 - It begins with lazy simplicity, but toward the end bursts into a powerful and urgent message.
15. Paul Cantelon, Trachimbrod/Ressurection/Requiem: 10/10 - Simply beautiful. About halfway through, the urgency of the previous tracks finally builds up for the climax, whooshing over you bitterly, sadly, and with almost a sense of determination. Again, it's tragic. You don't hear the lightheartedness of previous tracks, but the slight nudging of a past that doesn't want to haunt: it just wants to resolve itself. To exist.
16. Paul Cantelon, Inside-Out: 10/10 - And it does resolve itself. Here is another bittersweet piece. But this time, it carries a touch of enlightenment (illumination?) with it.
17. Gogol Bordello, Start Wearing Purple: 10/10 - This was the absolutely most perfect song the movie could have ended with. It switches the film seamlessly back into that feel of silly hilarity, single-handedly managing to leave the audience uplifted - a sore necessity for such a partly bleak film!
Overall, one of my favorite soundtracks out there. Whether you've seen the (remarkable) movie or not, get this! It is gorgeous, beautiful, fantastic, powerful, uplifting, and itching to tell you something you've known all your life but just can't quite grasp. In short, a brilliant piece of work.

Classic Stuff.......2007-01-11
This album from the Mark II version of Deep Purple is best known for the huge hit "Woman From Tokyo" that starts out the disc. When people talk about the classic Deep Purple albums usually this is not one of them that gets mentioned, but I think it is underrated. The album would prove to be the last for the mark II lineup as tensions were high at the time of its recording. Every song here is good "Mary Long", "Super Trouper", "Smooth Dancer", "Rat Bat Blue", "Place In Line" and "Our Lady" are all classic purple. The whole band is in fine form instrumentally and Gillan's voice at its peak. I have had a love hate relationship with many of Deep Purple's albums over the years, but this one is one of their best in my opinion.

The New Riders, for their part, consisted of Grateful Dead alumni (read: Jerry Garcia) and Dead proteges. The New Riders toured fairly extensively with the Dead as their opening band.
This album recalls nothing so much as the Dead's "American Beauty". There's a couple of duds, but when they let loose on the wah wah pedals while riffing on country music, the going gets weird, and the weird get going....or something like that.
If you're into Lucinda, Ryan Adams, Wilco, or any of the so called alt country bands, you need to get back to the source. Start right here.

Very Good!.......2007-06-13
Deep Purple's Burn lacks POWER.......2007-05-24
[...]
'Burn' is a funk album, plain and simple. If you are expecting this to
sound anything like 1970's 'In Rock' or EVEN 1973's 'Who Do We Think We Are' from the year prior, you'll be in a for a painful letdown. Think of early Stevie Wonder (superstition era) being forced to sing and play Sabbath chords at gunpoint and you have this album.
Now let me make clear, I don't have anything against funk when it is done right. Those craving pure, guitar-based funk should look to early Funkadelic (Maggot Brain and Free Your Mind..), Sly and the Family Stone, or even Grand Funk Railroad (Closer to Home, Grand Funk) However, It just doesn't sound right for Deep Purple.
The song 'Burn' is great. It is fast, aggressive and full of virtuoso. But it serves as a cushion to take the edge off the mediocrity of the rest of the songs. Guaranteed, if this album kicked off with a different song like the embarassing 'Lay Down Stay Down', a bewildered headbanger of old would have tossed the vinyl across the room shattering it to pieces. 'Might Just Take Your Life'? HAHAHA. Sounds like a menacing title track doesn't it? Actually, it sounds like it should have been a better opening theme song for 'Sanford & Son'. 'Sail Away' is a bit interesting, but still lacks any real energy. 'What's Going On Here?' is an ironic tune to be on the album, because.. frankly I was wondering the same thing. A-100 is an instrumental which sounds like nothing else on the album, more like a corny Tangerine Dream experiment; definitely not a song to choose to sum up the Deep Purple sound in general!
Now the song, 'Mistreated' is great as it is a strong blues workout with a memorable riff and David Coverdale sings great on it too. Thankfully, Glen keeps his mouth shut on this track because elsewhere, he sounds like an impoverished kid who was just let into Candyopolis at the mall. In other words, it's obvious he's excited to be in Deep Purple. Sample a live version of 'Burn' where he shrills like a cat being tortured with a blowtorch during the verses and you'll know what I mean. Anyways, 'Mistreated': great track. Very much comparable to 'Since I've Been Loving You' on Zeppelin III.
I don't mean to discredit Coverdale and Hughes as musicians in general because Coverdale was great in Whitesnake and Hughes was AWESOME in Trapeze. But 'Burn' as an album is just not up to par with the rest of the Deep Purple catalog, with the exception of the next album, Stormbringer, which was just as bad; killer opening song, the rest stinkers. Ritchie Blackmore then realized he was hanging with fellows who wanted to be the next Bootsy Collins, so he left and formed Rainbow.
Hooray for Ritchie.

What is great about the Burn album, it's not a bunch of songs that were trying to be top 40 hits, like so many bands, but an album that goes from start to finish in grand fashion. It's funky, it's bluesy and it rocks.

Perhaps THE Seminal Hard Rock Album.......2007-06-24
It's doubtful there would have been Scorpions, UFO, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Yngwie Malmsteen, Vinnie Moore, Dio. or pretty much ANY "hair metal" band from the '80's without this release. I realize the benefits of "hair metal" are disputed (I certainly dispute them), but it was an obviously influential genre (particuarly in terms of guitar playing).
As great as their later release, Machine Head, was and is, this is FAR harder, and keyboardist Jon Lord's influence from the great Classical Composer Gustav Mahler is evident on many of the tracks. Just in terms of overall music composition and scheme, his release never sounds overly removed form the early 2oth century wave of Viennese "Atonal" masterpieces (see Arnold Schoenberg's mid-period, Anton Webern, etc).
Don't miss this, even if you're not "wild" about hard rock. This is an essentia; ROCK album, and it would astonish me to hear too many protests over that assertion.

Now, as to this 25th Anniversary edition of IN ROCK: lovely job of remastering, and a great selection of bonus tracks! This is definitely the one to own and treasure. One of Purple's best, and, really, one of my faves.
