Amazon.com essential recording

As tour guide on a trip through the midnight-to-dawn streets of Los Angeles that the beautiful people never see through the smoked-glass windows of their limos, Waits details the lives of hipsters, down-and-outers, and lost causes in latter-day beat poetry and small-jazz-combo arrangements. This live album from 1975 almost has the quality of standup comedy, but the routines are richer and more carefully drawn. Check out the vivid detail, low humor, and hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold emotionalism Waits brings to songs such as "Nighthawk Postcards," "Putnam County," and a memorable reading of trucker poet Red Sovine's "Big Joe and Phantom 309." --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Something different for the evening.......2007-03-19

This is unlike any other Tom Waits album. It was recorded live with a Jazz Quartet backing him, now I can hear you thinking immediately this is going to be dreadful - its not.
In fact its astonishing, there are no long solos, the backing quartet just provide a swinging backdrop for Waits to weave his unusual brand of story telling.
Sometimes very funny, occasionally sad and always lyrically interesting, Waits scats/talks and sings in his distinctive growl.
You might want to hear this first, before purchasing, as I concede it's not going to be everybody's cup of tea.
However it has remained my favourite Tom Waits album for decades now, despite Swordfishtrombones etc.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Waits at his sardonic best.......2007-01-10

Waits's sense of humor shines on this album, delivered almost as a stand-up comedy act (with jazz quartet, of course). His hilarious comentary and recitations provoke some genuine belly-laughs (I doubled over in spots). Yet his lyrics retain the beautiful artistry that he has become known for.

The songs vary from the hilarous ("Better Off Without a Wife") to the mysterious (his rendition of Red Sovine's "Phantom 309") to the beautifully tragic ("Putnam County"). He offers up tributes to love ("Nobody") and tributes to barrooms ("Warm Beer and Cold Women"). Throughout, Waits banters with the crowd, which becomes a staple of his performance on here--his chatter with the audience actually becomes part of the music on the album. The result is a comedy album that isn't comedy, a jazz album that isn't jazz...but whatever it is, it's absolutely brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest live albums, ever........2006-03-25

Who has the guts to release a live album that is composed of songs that don't appear on studio release albums by the artist? I can't think of one though I'm sure they exist.

First, it was a double album. That was a feat by itself.
Second, it's so natural to have this smokey piano lounge set committed to vinyl and now cd, Tom's music fit like a glove as a live release. His between song banter is delightful and has been a hallmark of his live shows throughout his career. The guy's a comedian, intelligent and successfully creates and maintains a character that's interesting, fun and ya can't, I can't, tell if it's him or not, though it's quite likely similar to Woody Allen's screen character that is simply not his real life self, maybe just a cousin.

This is another album that's perfect for night, in fact, late night driving.

'Emotional Weather Report' is so perfectly ended. A real coup. This song takes you someplace and leaves you off somewhere else. A pure pleasure. His word ability shining here.
'On A Foggy Night' another journey he takes us on.
'Eggs And Sausage (In A Cadillac With Susan ....)'. It's funny, as great as he is with language and imagrey, with bringing something into sharp focus by a turn of a phrase, each time, at least on his 70's albums, that he talks about waitresses, it just don't swing. I don't know what it is but his clever word work just gets off the track for that bit of life he tries to convey and leaps back on for each and every one of his other image making phrases. Funny. Odd. Surprising.
'Better Off Without A Wife' is such the coolest song. Should this be played at weddings (probably not) or bachelor parties (probably).
'Warm Beer And Cold Women'. Almost howlin' at the moon time.
'Nobody'. Man, is this a classic or what? I still get misty eyed whenever I hear this song. From the heart. Love song man.
'Big Joe And Phantom 309'. Story telling at its peak. Yes, someone else wrote it he tells us but he sings it like it came right outta him. Beautiful, evokative. Trippy man.

Dont' have this album? And yer lookin' at TOM WAITS CD's on Amazon.com? Get it man. You cannot fail. This will please and delight, yourself and others, virtually everyone who hears it 'cept, uh, I dunno. BARRY MANILOW and JOURNEY fans, I'm pretty sure.

What's it like when you still dig an album 30 years later? A testament to an artist who can create a work that is not crippled by the passing of time, whose work continues to please and amaze and calm and delight, long after the first introduction. Long after baby. chrisbct@hotmail.com

4 out of 5 stars Here's the lowdown Brown. This is the scoop Betty Boop........2006-01-22

This is it. Bebop poetry at its best. Early Waits in all his resplendent glory, rapping on everything from "green gabardines" to "dangerous veal cutlets" and "a yellow biscuit of a buttery cue ball moon rollin' maverick across an obsidian sky." This is a mind boggling live performance from 1975, featuring Waits in top form, channeling Ferlinghetti, Lenny Bruce, the Beats, Lord Buckley, and filtering it through a salacious, strepy voice. Waits may not be a singer, but he's a master of rhythmic diatribe, often utilizing Ken Nordine-style word-jazz and scat phrasing. As a result, most of his "tunes" sound like poetic breath control exercises. What Waits' voice does to words is unbelievable. It slices and dices them, syllable by syllable, garbles their vowels, sucks them down to the bare consonant, molds them into a bolus of half-human sound, and spits them out like pieces of teeth from the mouth of a broken prize fighter. His lyrics linger in the listener's memory like the brown haze of an urban smog ignited by approaching twilight. Let's face it, the dude is a genius.

"Nighthawks at the Diner," while not Waits' best album, is at least a great early representation of his stage act. It is as important to understanding his roots as Randy Newman's live 1971 album is to that singer's history. It veers from hilarious and profound to maudlin and dull, then back again. The intro and outro are the highlights of the evening. In the middle it gets boozy. And the less he "sings," the better the performances are. This is closer to a comedy album with jazz backing than a straight musical album. I guarantee you've never heard anything like it. And once you've heard it, you'll never hear anything like it again.

And now, as Waits himself puts it, "It's time to make like a hockey player and get the puck out of here....Time to make like a bakery truck and haul buns."

5 out of 5 stars A Must Own.......2001-06-13

Yeah, I found out about the Nighthawks in the mid 70's as well. I guess this one in particular made such an impression that I plunged headlong into collecting blues music. Today this recording remains my favorite blues cd along with the first release by Roomful of Blues. I don't write many recommendations, so if you are on the fence, and looking for a hidden gem, grab this one.

5 out of 5 stars These guys are boiling hot!.......2000-08-27

I've been into the Nighthawks since the early '70's while living in Washington, D.C. I used to catch them at the Bayou and Cellar Door in Georgetown, and Phychedelly in Bethesda, MD. They're the best blues band there is and this CD is evidence of that. Hey, Mark and Jimmy, I'm still your biggest fan! I've had this album since way back when and now with no record player (remember those?) I am delighted the CD is available to replace my record. No, I'm not getting rid of the ol' vinyl copy. It'll be a collector's item someday!

4 out of 5 stars How many years ...........2007-03-12

... since "Open All Night" (actually their second album)! Nighthawks is one of best bar bands ever, but it was not easy to replace Jimmy Thackery, who quit in 1986. More recently, also Jan Zukowski left. Paul Bell and Johnny Castle are not beginners and provide very solid fret work; as a result this "Blue Moon in your eye" is Nighthawks' best effort in years. Owing to the mix of rock'n'roll/blues/rock songs, there are a few weak moments - a constant feature throughout Nighthawks' life - which may disappoint blues "hardliners", though slow blues are terrific. Great singing and drumming from Pete Ragusa.

Actually if you have never heard of the Nighthawks, "What, you been livin'
under a rock in Recita?" This is a good sampler album, I own it, but it
takes you through a guided tour of their work, the cuts are juicy and
delicious, like a very rare london broil, tasty without a lot of fat.
Fills you up, not out. I play this one in my car a lot because it is so
represenitive of their work. Of course you may want to explore the rest
of their inventory, its worth the trouble.

5 out of 5 stars NONSTOP BRILLIANCE.......2003-10-02

The Coon-Sanders Nighthawks are one of those bands whose relative obscurity just doesn't make sense. Why they haven't remained an important chapter in early jazz is a mystery - and an unfair one at that. These arrangements are relentless, cutting edge stuff. The liner notes compare them to Ellington, which I figured, not having popped the disc in yet, was hyperbola, but no - these little tunes are brimming with novelty, subtlety, surprise and pure beauty, showcasing a band at the peak of their creative powers. The cream of the crop is Hallucinations, evidently so named because of its incredibly progressive, yet catchy structure.

I found Volume 1 considerably less interesting and would only recommend it to serious students of the era. But Volume 2 hits the ground running and only accelerates as the disc moves foreward. Buy this CD if you like early jazz OR dance orchestras from the late 20s aned early 30s. It'll blow your head off. And you'll wonder why no one else told you about it!

5 out of 5 stars Loudest and funniest!.......2000-10-08

The Coon-Sanders Nighthawks captured the spirit of the Roaring 20s better than any other dance band. Their complete surviving recordings, give or take a few alternate "takes," have been reissued on four CDs on The Old Masters label. All four disks are excellent, but Volume Two is the best.

Covering the 1926-1928 period, this CD shows the band at the very top of its form. Eight of the 23 selections were composed by co-leader Joe Sanders, and more than half of the selections contain spirited "hot" vocals by Sanders and his partner Carleton Coon. Sanders wrote the band's arrangements.

This band played jazz, and played it with gusto and humor. Highlights include "Roodles," with a scat vocal by the two leaders, "Slue Foot," low-down and hot, and the remarkable "Louder and Funnier." The Nighthawks played pop standards such as "I Ain't Got Nobody" and "Wabash Blues" with the same verve that they gave to Sanders's original compositions.

If the Nighthawks weren't quite as hot as the great black orchestras of the era, they do not suffer by comparison either. Compare their version of "Deep Henderson" with King Oliver's, and their version of "Blazin'" (a Sanders original) with Fletcher Henderson's. The Coon-Sanders band holds its own against the competition.

5 out of 5 stars Without a doubt the hottest white band from the 20's.......2000-10-05

The Coon-Sanders Original Nighthawks Orchestra was the hottest white dance band around in the 1920's, and they could hold their own against Bennie Moten, Fletcher Henderson, and even McKinney's Cotton Pickers. Both leaders(Coon & Sanders) sing and I don't mean those sappy songs, they sing hot(no dull vocal refrains here). highlights of this exellent disc are I Aint Got Nobody, Hallucinations, and Deep Henderson. Wonderful CD, all; four volumes are recommended, however Vols. 1 & 2 are most essential.

5 out of 5 stars The Blues With Tatoo's, the Bad Boys from Bethesda, the Nighthawks!!!!.......2007-03-06

Just thinking about this album gives me a thrill, the thrill that I get
when I seen these guy's live. I have said it before, the live venue is
the best way to listen to the Nighthawks. Plus they never disappoint
with their song list, yes on the live albums you may get songs from
previous live albums, but what the heck, their song range is vast, and
they prove how vast it is through out their full catalogue of discs.
Strong, wrapped almost too tight blues, fuled by 100 octane, caution keep
away from open flame or sparks.

5 out of 5 stars Blues with an edge.......2006-09-03

If you like your blues with an edge, good harp and slide guitar, than it doesn't get any better than the Nighthawks! This CD rocks, it's one of my favorites, but then all of thier live CD's are great.

5 out of 5 stars This is quite possibly the greatest live blues/boogie album ever recorded........2005-10-16

Wow, does this album bring back memories. I grew up in Springfield, VA during the late 70's & early 80's and used to go see The Nighthawks all over the Beltway area (Maryland, Virginia, DC). I was at two of the four shows when this album was recorded at The Bayou in Georgetown. To this day, those two shows are still the best live music I've ever seen. No band was tighter or had more energy than the 'Hawks, not even Thorogood. I was so bummed when Thackery left the band in '86. It ended a musical era in my life.

This album captures the top blues/boogie band of the day in their absolute prime. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best CDs Ever-This Is Exactly What They Were Like.......2003-08-14

Anyone who saw these guys in their prime in the early '80s (when this set was recorded) knows what they could do - and this CD shows it. One of the best live boogie/blues/rock bands ever, puts out a collection without one weak song. Mark Wenner is unsurpassed on harmonicas and Jimmy Thackery's guitar is high energy all the way. While almost all their other CDs are a mix of some great and some OK tracks, this one is great all the way through. Crank this up and picture yourself in a small smoke filled club like the old "Double Door" in Charlotte, with these guys so close that Thackery would actually walk out into the audience for some songs as they shook the walls. If you don't find yourself stompin' your foot to this CD, you're older than I am (maybe dead).

5 out of 5 stars Kick-a** rock and roll.......1998-08-23

If you like good ol' back to the basics driving rock and roll then this CD is a must. These guys are tight and know how to jam and how to boogie. If you listen to this and sit still then you're dead. Buy it. END

5 out of 5 stars Now That's How You Tear the Roof Off The Bar!.......2004-12-18

"The Nighthawks Live" was released in 1997 as a double-EP combining both "Live at the Psychedelly" in Bethesda, MD 1976 and "Live from The El Macombo" in Toronto, Canada in 1977. The disc shows the Hawks in prime form, bringing bar-band 12-bar to the two packed clubs. Their version of Little Feat's "Tripe Face Boogie" is done with scalpel-thin precision, and Jan Zukowski's bass track is near-unbelievable. Mark Wenner's harp does the ghost of Little Walter justice as they cover Muddy Waters' "19 Years Old". The lightning take of "Shake Your Moneymaker" tears through a hill-country take of the classic tune with a gratuitous harmonica for all. Never truly appreciated for their work in the 1970's as blues-revisionists, the group has stayed together and has recently released a DVD with Howlin' Wolf guitarist Hubert Sumlin. What a great blues band. The Psyche Delly in Bethesda M.D. was the site of this amazing live performance by the Nighthawks. Jim Thackery and Mark Wenner tear through "Shake Your Moneymaker". "Can't Get Next To You" is played like no band I've ever heard. There are bonus tracks here not on the original release. Check out "Ubangi Stomp", and try to keep still. .... Even the intro is good. A must have blues cd.

4 out of 5 stars Great concept cd!.......2004-02-28

This succeeds where most concept albums fail, continuity over plot, and good music over experimental.

slammin!

4 out of 5 stars Cage and Camu Tao Really Rip it up on This Theme Album.......2003-03-30

This album is incredible. I don't understand all the haters, but I guess some people were expecting something that sounded similar to "Movies For The Blind" and this is a totally different CD. "Movies For The Blind" was more like an underground album of Cage doin' his own thing and Nighthawks was Cage and Camu Tao taking a break from their stuff and making a fun album about crooked cops and they kept the sound really East Coast. This is why I feel you can't compare the two albums, this is more a CD for when you're in the mood for something catchy and fun. The production on this album is sweet and that really shows on tracks like, "Street Poly" and "Keep The City Up". For me, this is an album where you don't wanna skip any tracks, I can listen to this start to finish time and time again. Over all, if you like Cage, NonPhixion, or Necro, you won't necessarily enjoy this CD; but if you like that stuff along with some of the more mainstream, but intelligent, East Coast stuff (such as maybe, Nas or Wu-Tang) then get this. Just don't expect a very serious and emotional CD with Nighthawks since this was just a side project obviously done with a more laid back vibe.

2 out of 5 stars sadly not as good as i had hoped.......2003-03-11

I got this album the day it came out cause i'm a huge MHz fan, and I'm sort of feeling some of Cage's joints, and thought this CD would be dope. I was so wrong. I don't know how to describe it, any other way than below average. The whole project just bores me. A lot of my friends who own this or have listened to it @ my house agree. Just something about the concept seems to get old after the 3rd song. I would have to recomend you pass on this if your considering picking it up. Until I read that other guys review on this, i hadnt heard one person say they halfway enjoyed listening to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Wheres the 6 star rating?.......2002-12-12

Cage and Camu blow you away with tight flows and a cd worth the price of admission to the olympics. Cage shows his experience in this cd and its stars above his single release Movies For The Blind, this cd is playin in my cd player right now and will be till i need to buy a new copy, evry track is a classic, with standouts being Cop Hell, and the best of the album (in my opinion) Keep the city up, this cd will get even the most underground haters to listen to cage. get this cd if you like cage, get it if you like underground rap, get this cd if you like eminem, just get this cd no matter what

4 out of 5 stars The Nighthawks +.......2004-03-16

I love Jimmy Thackery's singing and searing guitar work, however, he only plays and sings lead on one song. On this album, the Nighthawks (Thackery, Wenner and company), provide backup for their guests, Guitar Jr., Pinetop Perkins, Bob Margolin and others. All of the music is excellent but, if you're expecting a lot of Thackery, you're not going to hear much of him as a front man. As another reviewer pointed out, an excellent slow blues number, "Got A Mind To Travel", was dropped from the original Volume One vinyl and also "Before You Accuse Me" was dropped from Volume Two. There can be no good reason for both of these omissions because the original two vinyl albums were together about 81 minutes long, so only one song had to be omitted to make both albums fit onto one CD.

4 out of 5 stars Bonus blues boost the value.......2001-08-31

This CD is a little tough to review in that it is really two albums combined. The first is a classic bar band blues set with backing provided by regulars from the Muddy Waters band. The second veers more toward R&B and rock. The first album is definitely superior but since it is sold at single CD prices, the second album is really just a bonus. One other quibble is that the slow blues tune 'Got A Mind to Travel' is dropped from the vinyl version of the first album and I hate to see it go. What's left is mostly uptempo good-time blues by a band that loves its work.

5 out of 5 stars Hey, look at this.......2007-03-06

I've alway felt that the Nighthawks best showcase was their live stage
persona, seen them several different times at different venues, and they
never disapoint. What you are getting with this double album is a taste
of their special gritty take on the urban blues. Its amazing that the
Nighthawks vocal harmonies, along with Mark Wenner's just stone slutty as
a dockyard doxie, harmonica solo's are enough to draw your attemtion, but
Jimmy Thackery's out front, in the background guitar work is his standard
excellence. I've bouught it several time's, tape, album, CD. I still
have the album.
