Although he's known primarily for the crossover hit "Just a Friend," to categorize Biz Markie's career on the basis of that song would be wholly unjust. This Cold Chillin' compilation sets the record straight. As a member of the stylistically diverse Juice Crew, the formidable clique that included Big Daddy Kane's slick debonairness, Roxanne Shante's defiant b-girl stance, and the tales of hard-knock raconteur Kool G. Rap, Biz Markie's clown-prince character more than held his own. Despite the fact that he's maintained a low profile in recent years, a fact that was probably hastened by his losing a landmark sampling case to Gilbert O'Sullivan, Biz Markie's manic energy and unbridled persona paved the way for distinctive MCs like Ol' Dirty Bastard and Busta Rhymes. His charisma certainly helped him get over his legal troubles, but the Biz's deft beatboxing skills, humorous storytelling, and freestyle finesse are all clear on undisputed classics like "Nobody Beats the Biz," "Vapors," and "Make the Music with Your Mouth, Biz." Had "This Is Something for the Radio," and "Just Rhymin' with the Biz" (a Big Daddy Kane track, but a classic Biz appearance nonetheless) shown up here, this compilation would be definitive. In spite of those omissions, this fun and funky career retrospective succeeds in giving credit where it is due. --Del F. Cowie

3 out of 5 stars Straight Macking It.......2002-03-03

Biz Markie was straight macking it on this one, he totally went all out on the mackalicious factor. The best song is definetly "You got what I need", its an absolute classic, another track you can pump up in your local discotech is "Albee Square Mall" if you don't love that one, your not from the hood.
One love!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this album if you like good music...don't if you don't........2001-01-26

Biz has arguably been better known for his numerous and amazing guest spots on other's jams than for his own stuff. Hopefully, this album will remind heads of all stripes that Biz's best solo stuff is ill and holds up to repeated spins. The Diabolical's style is, well...different, and I mean that in the best possible way. He excells at just busting this phat-azz old-school type of hip-hop that makes you feel like you're chillin' in the park in NY cicra mid-80s. A criticism of Biz's solo joints has been all the extra weak tracks...well, now you have the "hits" compilation. One low price!

5 out of 5 stars True Hip Hop Heads.......2000-12-29

This album is a summary of Biz's early career. It is definitely a classic and a true delight for the 25 & over crowd.

5 out of 5 stars The Biz.......2000-12-07

This is a must for all true Hip Hop fans. Tracks like Just a Friend, Nobody beats and Vapors are all included. A classic.

5 out of 5 stars The Clown Prince of Hip Hop.......2000-11-25

It is nice to see Biz Markie getting props, and is deserving of a fantastic compilation such as this. All of his classics from "Nobody Beats the Biz" to "Just A Friend" are included, so you can't go wrong. Plus, most of his albums are hard to find in stores. Pick this up and enjoy the wit and humor that Biz provided throughout his recording career.

5 out of 5 stars I love these guys :-O.......2007-02-18

Ever since Parent's Just Don't Understand and Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble, I've listened to them and love them even still. This cd pretty much covers all their best material (although I feel that they left out a really cool song called You Saw My Blinker B*tch). It's full of fun old school style rap with fantastic lyrics. My absolute two favourite songs on here are Boom! Shake The Room and my number one favourite Summertime. I could hear that over and over again for hours.
These guys are terrific and made some excellent music. I love listening to it all even though it's a little dated now, but it's fantastic and I highly recommend this to fans of rap, hip hop, R&B. While some songs are pure fluff, it makes this a fun and enjoyable cd to listen to.

    5 out of 5 stars King of the Nasty ! ! !.......2000-11-05

Yes, these recordings aren't killer digital quality... on the other hand... we're back in the '70s now and we're dealing with REALLY underground stuff... BLOWFLY was the GODFATHER of porno-funk. He took popular tunes (mostly disco, funk, R & B and later rap) and ascribed mega-Rudy Ray Moore caliber lyrics to them... This was party music for the guys. What it surprizing when you hear these live recordings though is how tight his bands were, even though it was only novelty music. You could tell that even though this guy was one sick mofo he was in charge of the ship and genuinely was into the music.

The fact is that while the tracks sound like PA tapes the album is GENUINELY fun to listen to... sure, its not going to rattle all the windows in the neighborhood, but you will do strange things in your pants... get this CD, you'll have an overview of the sick and delightfully entertaining mind of BLOWFLY. Check out RUDY RAY MOORE'S stuff too !

1 out of 5 stars About as good as the Hair soundtack.......2000-06-25

This cd has no bass. It is so old school That Jesus drops some lyrics in it. If you are an old fan, looking for a drive down memory lane, please don't tell anyone you bought this and hide it to avoid much embarrasment.

5 out of 5 stars Give It Up For The Diabolical MC: Biz Markie!.......2007-01-14

All self-respecting MC's should own a copy of these 2 east coast hip hop staples. Take listen to any notable hip hop or r & b release in the 90's and you'll hear snippets of this classic, specifically Mary J. Blige, A Tribe Called Quest and Bad Boy releases. Vapors is the first lesson I ever learned about haters and when you make the come up. Like 2pac said: " A lot of us fatherless boys listened to the rappers of our day as father figures." Pac named LL, Kane, and Cube as his father figures. Biz Markie certainly goes on that list as well.

5 out of 5 stars Biz in Harmony.......2002-05-03

These two cds were Biz at his best. Goin' Off featuring the vastly underrated TJ Swan and Biz Never Sleeps perfectly captures the Emmazaa-A-R-KIE reaching his zenith. My Man Rich, Biz in Harmony, Things Get Easier, Make the Music, Albee Square Mall, etc. There's probably only two songs maximum that didn't age well between the two LPs. I love all of the monikers that he calls himself on Never Sleeps. To this day I haven't been able to decipher them all. I'd remembered Goin' Off as a classic but for some reason had forgotten about the hidden treasure that was Never Sleeps. It somehow got overlooked during the all Gangsta or all Daisy age of hip-hop. I had to cop this one as soon as I spotted it. A hall of fame cd for a hall of fame artist.

5 out of 5 stars Biz has the masta plan.......2002-04-22

Who else can rhyme about takin' a dump? Who else can say "On a crack mission, no type of ambition, make blunts disappear betta than a magician?"

Biz is hands-down the best rapper to ever live. "up ya nose wit a rubba hose and everybody knows that ya style is olda than my gramma's clothes."

    Unbe-freakin-lievable.

5 out of 5 stars man, if u ain't up on biz yet, you betta cop this cd!.......2002-02-28

this is a phat collection to get, its 2 of biz's classic albums for the price of one! biz is dope! listen to biz markie if u like tight rymes, good beats.... get the other 2 albums "i neef a haircut" and "all samples cleared" after you get this 2 album comp. then get some slick rick cd's, then we can talk

5 out of 5 stars Nobody Beats The Biz.......2001-09-29

This is a great find! Biz Markie is the best Old-School rapper who obviously influenced Biggie Smalls, the best rapper since The Biz. If you are a lyricist looking for inspiration, look no further. Biz rymes vague words to express himself, not worring about everything ryming perfectly and focusing on the flow of things. This is a breath of fresh air in today's rap world of Cash Money, DMX, "P Diddy", and others. Biz sings about simpler things and has fun with it. The best CD next to The Roots' "Do You Want More?"

The Fat Boys are one of my favorite old school hip hop groups. Their first cd is a classic. I am only giving this cd 2 stars because the songs FAT BOYS, CAN YOU FEEL IT, JAIL HOUSE RAP and a couple of other songs are not the full version, they are the cut short version. I bought this cd thinking all the songs was the full version. I feel i was ripped off. So true Fat Boys fans beaware, STAY AWAY. Buy the vinyl version of the Fat Boys first cd to get the full versions.

    5 out of 5 stars Breakdancing, baby!.......2004-04-25

Back in the mid-80s I was caught up in the breakdancing craze, showing my skillz at the skating rink every Friday night. :) While they may seem like a joke now, I assure you that the Fat Boys were a serious hit in that time frame. People all over my junior high school were rapping Fat Boy lyrics or, more often, imitating the Human Beat Box. Listening to the first half of this disc really takes me back to the days when I was perfecting that new variant on the backspin or the worm so I could wow the crowds next Friday, and for that alone it's worth the price. :)
