    Product Description

Spectacularly emotional, soulful, tender, and swinging. Legendary Alto Saxophonist Art Pepper's concert in Abashiri Japan in bright snowy November, 1981 with George Cables, David Williams, Carl Burnett. Many never before released tracks. Art Pepper, legendary alto sax player, is known as one of the greatest jazz artists of his generation. But he always soared far beyond the dated categories of swing and be-bop in his lyricism, technical brilliance, soulfulness, and solid, down-home raunchy sweetness. VOLUME 1 is a TWO DISC SET, a complete concert performed in Abashiri, in Northern Japan, in the snowy winter of 1981 for an audience who showered Art and the guys with uncommon enthusiasm and wild love. They responded with a performance that seems to levitate with energy. You get to be there and hear Art declare this performance of "Body and Soul" "One of the nicest things I've played in my life." Mastered by Wayne Peet, the quality is excellent. (Included: an eight page booklet with reminiscences and photos by Laurie) (moi). Nobody has it. It's an instant collectors' item. This album is the first of a series of mostly unreleased material which will include performances recorded live and in-studio throughout his career. Some "unreleased" tracks have been illegally exchanged (I mean they have been traded or, sold by people who haven't given me, Laurie, Art Pepper's widow and intended beneficiary, a taste: The taste that Art supposed I'd be entitled to.) Thus, the title of the series, "Widow's Taste." 1 Landscape 2 Besame Mucho 3 Red Car 4 Goodbye 5 Straight Life 6 Road Waltz 7 For Freddie (part 1) 8 For Freddie (part 2) 9 Body and Soul 10 Talk 11 Rhythm-A-Ning 12 Blues Encore (inc

ART PEPPER: LAST CONCERT Kool Jazz Festival, Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C. (With Roger Kellaway, David Williams, Carl Burnett; mastered by Wayne Peet) In his autobiography, "Straight Life," Art said: "[As a child,] I built up my own play world. I loved sports, and I'd play I was a boxer or a football player. ...Boxing was the one I really got carried away with. At that time Joe Louis was coming up as a heavyweight. I would go out in the garage and pretend I was a fighter. I had a little box I sat on. I'd hear an imaginary bell and get up in this old garage and fight, and it was actually as if I was in the ring. Sometimes I'd get hit and fall down and be stunned, and I'd hear the referee counting, and I'd get up at the last minute, and just when everybody thought I was beaten, I'd catch my opponent with a left hook. And then I'd have him against the ropes. I'd knock him out, and everybody would scream and throw money into the ring and holler for me, and I'd hold my hands together and wave to the crowd." On May 30, 1982, Art Pepper performed in the last concert of his last tour. This is the concert. 1 Landscape 2 Talk 3 Ophelia 4 Talk 5 Mambo Koyama 6 Over the Rainbow 7 Talk 8 When You're Smiling

Bob Dylan has always been incredibly prolific, only releasing a fraction of what he records. Such a policy has made him a prime target for bootleggers over the years, finally prompting this sanctioned 1991 triple-disc dive into the Dylan vaults. It consists of rare tracks, unreleased outtakes, early versions of classics ("Times They Are a-Changin'," "Like a Rolling Stone," "I Shall Be Released"), and alternate versions that sometimes cut the originals ("Idiot Wind"). A measure of Dylan's depth is his list of discarded songs ("She's Your Lover Now," "Blind Willie McTell," "Series of Dreams") that would be the crown jewels of most catalogs. These 58 tracks serve as a shadow history of one of our most important artists. --Ben Edmonds

How far beyond awesome? If there's a Heaven and a Hell, if you haven't heard this at your end, you ain't goin' to Heaven.

Buy it. And I dare you to try to remove it from your CD player after hearing it the first time. But listen to it sitting down, or it'll knock you down.

Add 5 stars to the stingy 5 stars.

Can somebody out there help me with this collection? A few years ago Columbia was remastering the Bob Dylan catalog, and that is when I purchased the 3CD set of his called BIOGRAPH, because on the back of the box it said, Digitally Mastering at Sterling Sound, N.Y.C., with SBM, super bit mastering sound, so I was glad that I waited to purchase it till the remastered version became available, and I`ve been holding off from purchasing this collection till this collection has been remastered as well, in the SBM way that Biograph has. Or prehaps it has been by now, can somebody tell me if Columbia has remastered this collection yet?

      5 out of 5 stars Dylan Review.......2007-03-11

I absolutely love this bootleg set. It is the best music purchase I've made in several months; I can say this after having it firmly rooted in my CD player since I received it in the mail. I'm not a "reviewer of music," but watch out for Dylan's version of Idiot Wind in the set. It'll break your heart and leave you wanting more. A MUST have for any Dylan lover!

5 out of 5 stars Hear Dylan again -- for the first time!.......2007-02-24

I've been a huge Dylan fan since I found "Bringing It All Back Home" nestled amongst my mother's Sonny & Cher albums at the age of 17. I'm no completist, but I do have most of Dylan's catalog, including almost everything he released during the 1960's... or so I thought!

The Bootleg Series 1-3 is exhaustive without ever feeling exhausting - the three discs span three decades of Dylan's career, and it just FLIES by you like snapshots in an album, giving you a great sonic evolution of the greatest singing poet the world has ever known. The discs demand immediate re-listens (no really!), and many tracks will beg the question "why the heck didn't THIS ever find it's way onto an album?!?"

For the uninitiated (are there any left?), this collection is a great introduction to Dylan's first 30 years; but to those of us who grew up listening to the man, it serves as a time machine, transporting you back to that emotional rush when you first heard the nasal whine and amazing lyrics of Robert Zimmerman. For some, that's worth it's weight in gold.

Love the Cd has songs I had never heard Bob sing, and everything was just fine.

This is part of the sound track from the movie, "Eddie and the Cruisers". I have the first tape and, although this repeats some of the songs, I think it better. If you are a fan you will love this one. Has really good solid rock music. Thouroughly enjoyable.

There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

3 out of 5 stars If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

If you're expecting a series of previously unreleased studio tracks from the Enter the 36 Chambers or Only Built 4 Cuban Linx sessions, you won't find much of that lurking here. But what DJ Mathematics assembles should appeal to any fan of the Wu or even just their scowling street-tale aesthetic and dissonant production. A loose assemblage of different B-sides, remixes, and a few unreleased tracks, the album includes both Wu-Tang founders like Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, and GZA as well as satellite artists Eyes Low, Buddha Bless, and a post-pubescent Shyhiem trying to come grimy. Fans of the RZA school of dirty, dusted soul and funk loops will find much to like, especially "Wu Banga (Remix)," "King Toast Queen," and "U Don't Care." A throwback to the classic Wu era, Unreleased is welcome relief for rugged rap fans thirsty for liquid swords. --Oliver Wang

4 out of 5 stars wish it was a real cd.......2007-04-09

this cd is ill. it deff takes me back to some 36 chambers cuban linx days. there is no doubt that wu tang is and was the greatest rap group of all time. there are a few new tracks from wu tang and wu afiliated ppl. but most of the tracks are remixs by the wu's long time dj mathematics. i guess there is no need to say if you r a tru wu-tang fan you need this bc the truth is really ur either a tru wu tang fan these days or u dont no much about them. its too bad but there is no more inbetween any more. i would really love a new wu cd with all new stuff. and meth is on the track that amazon said he is on.

      3 out of 5 stars UNRELEASED.......2007-03-08

THIS ALBUM IS A DIEHARD WU-FAN COLLECTOR. IT HAS THE WUTANGS OLD SOUND AND STYLE AFTER THE 36 CHAMBERS AND BEFORE THE WUTANG FOREVER SOUND. IN THOSE TIMES EVERYTHING SOUNDED DARK AND HEAVY ON THE MENTAL. IT IS BY ALLAH MATHEMATICS. THE WU-SOUND TODAY METAMORPHED TO A NEW TYPE OF FEEL INCLUDING MATH. HENCE, THIS ALBUM IS NOT FOR A SOFT EARED PERSON.
DIE HARD FANS, REMENISCE ON THIS BACK IN THE DAY JOINT AND HOLD TIGHT ON THE GOD'S JEWEL.

5 out of 5 stars A throwback to the Wu era.......2007-03-05

Contrary to the Amazon description, this album does not feature Method Man on any of the outstanding material compiled here (thanks to the the peerless DJ Mathematics). Some outstanding tracks here. At it's best, this album showcases some of the pioneering touches that contributed to the Wu pantheon. Very reminiscent of '36 Chambers'.

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Collection.......2007-06-06

I picked this CD up from Starbuck's the other day because I noticed there was a Previously Undreleased live version of No Woman, No Cry. I proceeded to listen to the album on the ride home the next day. The great thing about Marley and the Wailers is one song can be listened to with excitement, and the same song can later serve as a lullaby at a later time. With over half of the tracks Previously Unreleased, I highly recommend this to any Marley fan - casual or fanatic.

The disc is comprised of 13 live recordings from five shows performed between 1973 and 1975. I'll go ahead and list basic information from the booklet since Amazon currently lacks in that department for this particular release. Note: According to the booklet, Peter Tosh is featured on the first nine tracks.

On the opposite side of the digipack cover is a quote that sums up any Bob Marley live recording: "The beauty of Marley's music is that while it holds a special significance for the sufferers of the world, it speaks to any listener with an open heart ... The rhythms are as close as your heartbeat, the voice speaks a language the spirit understands. And yes, when it hits, you feel no pain." - Robert Palmer, RollingStone, 1994

As an overview of one of the trailblazing bands of the San Francisco sound, this two-disc assortment of unreleased studio and performance oddities takes a backseat to another two-disc collection, Sons of Mercury, a 1991 best-of retrospective from Rhino. That said, Lost Silver and Gold is of definite interest to devotees of the band and Bay Area psychedelia in general, as well as younger jam-band fans interested in delving deeper into '60s rock than the Grateful Dead. Quicksilver's foundation was the tandem guitar attack of John Cipollina and Gary Duncan, a duo capable of consistently inventive (if occasionally long-winded) improvisation. (Greg Elmore and bassist David Freiberg rounded out the crucial QMS lineup.) Lost Silver and Gold supplements the lengthy live opening disc with a briefer set of unreleased demos, rarities, and soundtrack recordings that illustrate the group's strengths (terrific interplay) and weaknesses (shaky vocals). --Steven Stolder

      1 out of 5 stars Huh wha?.......2005-12-24

Once upon a time there was a City called San Francisco
and a decade called the sixties.
Some bands based themselves in that city
and some were better, more driven, more creative,
      and more controversial than others.
This recording is a chronicle of one of those bands that was and wasn't, respectively.
      All right,
they were OK on a good night, but this recording hardly qualifies as one of those. Besides,
      the fidelity is utterly atrocious:
so bad as to be unworthy of transcription into the CD format.
And then there's the "Gold and Silver" with no Cipollina:
instead some dude's WHISTLING the lead.
      Huh wha?
What WAS "Collector's Coice Music" THINKING when they released this scraping from the soft underbelly of 1960s rejects?

4 out of 5 stars some second thoughts-the more I listen the more I like it.......2004-06-15

Earlier, I wrote that the live disc was a minor disappointment. I still believe that. But, the more I listen to the live disc, the more I like it. As you listen to it repeatedly, your mind tends to ignore the sound quality problems and tends to blank out during the bad minutes, like the first two tracks. You then focus on the truly great moments. With your computer and good sound editing software, you could create a fairly nice CD of 30 to 40 minutes of great jamming music. You might even be able to correct some of the sound problems.

      3 out of 5 stars A minor disappointment-Get Happy Trails instead.......2004-06-05

On the surface you would think this would be a great album. 78 minutes of Quicksilver live from 1968. Unfortunately, it does not live up to expectations. The sound quality is bad and the performance is not great.

This is a two disc set from when Quicksilver was just getting started, recorded in 1967 and 1968. The first disc is a 78 minute concert from 1968. The second disc is studio outtakes from 67 and 68. It is around 50 minutes long. The group was going through radical changes at the time. They were more of a pop/folk psychodelic band until the lead, Dino Valenti went to jail on drug charges. The group became more of a jam band after that.

The live album finds the group just evolving their new sound. It shows in the performance. It is rough and raw. The group trips over each other. The vocals on many of the songs are bad. The harmonies are not harmonious. They even forget the some of the lyrics on Who Do You Love. There are some wonderful moments, but there are very few songs that are good throughout. You can hear how much they will improve if you listen the 1969 live album, Happy Trails.

The sound quality is poor. There is no dynamic range. The high end is way up front. The sound is fuzzy and distorted. That added to the rough performance makes this a difficult CD to listen to. If the sound quality were a little bit better the rough performance may be a little more enjoyable.

The second CD is more interesting. The sound quality is better, but not great, especially considering these are studio tracks. There is a loud hiss through some of the tracks. Almost all tracks contain very good performances. The last two tracks are silly thow-away songs.

I would strongly recommend getting the first album and Happy Trails instead of this one. Happy Trails is a wonderful live album with amazing performances and great sound quality. Lost Silver And Gold is just practice sessions for those 2 albums.

If you like Quicksilver's jamming, then you should check out the Welsh group, Man. Man and John Chipolina from Quicksilver actually collaborated. When Chipolina died, Man wrote Sons of Mercury in his honor. On a live album, Deke Leonard of Man says, why does have to be the good that die, why couldn't it have been Phil Collins instead. Some good Man albums to check out include, Back Into the Future, 1999 Tour Party and Live at the Rainbow.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Jam-Band Of All Time.......2003-11-12

I've heard many people say that The Allman Brothers Band and Cream are the greatest jam-bands of all time. Well, those people better listen long and hard to the live disc of this compilation. Simply put - Quicksilver Messenger Service were the undisputed masters of improvisational jams. Better than The Allman Brothers Band and better than Cream. Remember where you heard that.

It would be useless for me to try describing these songs in words, because they're so amazing that it would take forever to go into details about them. Suffice it to say that "Smokestack Lightning", "The Fool", "Who Do You Love", "Gold And Silver" and "Mona" simply define the word 'jam'. Gary Duncan is a fantastic rhythm guitarist and his POWERFUL blues vocals make Howlin' Wolf sound like a pansy. The rhythm section of David Freiberg (bass) and Greg Elmore (drums) is solid all the way through, providing a great backbone for the music. And I've saved the best for last - on lead guitar is the uncanny John Cipollina. Definitely one of the top five greatest players of all time, Cipollina hits notes that you just have to hear to believe. He's beyond comprehension, and he is second only to Eric Clapton in terms of raw intensity. Listen to him wail on "Smokestack Lightning", "The Fool" or "Gold And Silver" and prepare to be blown away. The first time I heard those tunes, I could do nothing but shake my head in disbelief as John proceeded to astound me with his unearthly intensity. In a nutshell - THE GUY IS UNBELIEVABLE.

The second disc is comprised of studio rarities (outtakes, demos and alternate versions of official tunes), and together with the mind-blowing live disc, this is one compilation that jam fans will NOT want to miss.

So listen to it. Play it loud. I'll be right here, waiting to say "I told you so".

5 out of 5 stars Excelente recuerdo del agudo aguijón de Cipollina!.......2001-09-11

4 out of 5 stars A lost treasure from the original DREAMGIRLS.......2007-07-05

Listening to this is just a delight. The girls sound and harmonize beautifully together as they did in those early days and you can tell these are some of the earlier sessions as they sound tight and solid. Many little perks in this collection. Version 2 of " Fancy Passes" is wonderful and sweet and has Diana interacting with Flo and Mary much like " Back in my arms again". " Our Day will come" has Mary on lead and " People" with Flo in the lead. The version of " All of a sudden" is very good and impressive. Many of the songs are from the live at the Copa album only these are studio versions. If you are a Supremes fan, then this is a must have. Small dissapointment here is the cover. Of all the photos there are of the Supremes a pose from the " Symphony" album was used, in fact it's almost identical to the " Sypmphony" album cover. FABULOUS booklet inside. All in all put together very well.

5 out of 5 stars Thought you've heard it all?.......2006-02-17

Thought you've heard it all from The Supremes? I thought I heard enough standards from them on the Sings Rodgers and Hart album. But I was very suprised and delighted to hear this unreleased album. It is The Supremes at their very best. I was suprised Motown didn't release this as planned. Wow, it would have been something in their heyday. They share harmonies as well as compliments to each other's vocal talent. Any real die hard Supreme fan would love to own this one.
