4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Score.......2005-03-19

This is a very good score by famous film composer Danny Elfman. The main theme is pretty neat. It begins with the swirling, almost "cartoon" sound, that we all come to match with the flying bug scene. "You have to see the movie" :)

All in all, a very cool, beaty main theme.

5 out of 5 stars PUM-PUM-pum-pum..Oh, I was just humming the theme..........2003-06-17

Sorry, I was a little bit distracted by the main theme of M.I.B. Its rather catchy if you think about it. It starts out with those four deep cello notes then leads into something that is continuously amazing for one of the most innovative opening sequences I've seen in a long time (not counting "Catch Me if You Can", of course). "D's Memories/Chase" starts out mellow, with K's old partner reminiscing about being an agent of M.I.B., then the track speeds up and goes into full on action music, complete with synths, driving strings, and plenty of percussion.

"J Contemplates" is kind of a somber cue, it seems like very deep "I'm thinking about something very important" music, it ends with a rather strange look at Edgar. "The Suit" brings us to the registration process in the film, where K is deleting everything that everyone knows about James Edwards and now he becomes J. Big (not yet huge...) choral bursts accentuate the track and bring it to an abrupt stop. "Petit Mort" is the most somber track on the album. Taking up only a mere 1:42, this track evokes a sense of "Aww, poor baby". "K Reminisces" is a great track, perhaps my third favorite from the album (the first being the main theme and the second being the finale). Light guitar signifying K's melancholy while being separated from his wife give the already action packed score to a more emotional place.

But, that was only a little bit of action. "Orion's Belt/Cat Stinger" is an amazing track. The opening 30 seconds are the second of Elfman's best full orchestra/full chorus writing in his career. The action just picks up from there. Employing full orchestra with extra emphasis on percussion, the next few tracks pound mercilessly through the speakers. "Noisy Cricket/Impending Trouble", "Sexy Morgue Babe/Icon" and "Take Off/Crash" are the included tracks. All the tracks, no matter what order you shuffle them in, will ultimately lead to one of, if not the best of Elfman's finales. The emotional portions of K's yearning are finally over as he is reunited with his wife in the end, now with J taking his place as the head honcho agent. It all comes together in a HUGE (this is it!) choral burst, along with crashing cymbals, full throttle orchestra, and a slight bit of synth, this has to be one of the best endings to a score that I've ever heard.

Action, sorrow, yearning, comedy, and a few bits of slight scare here and there, this ranks high among Elfman's best. Now, just look into this red eye and you won't remember a thing, except to go buy this score.

4 out of 5 stars Smith, Jones, and Elfman - The Men in Black.......2002-12-04

Danny Elfman received an Oscar nomination for this comedy score to MIB. It is trademark Elfman sound that includes all of the music that he wrote from the film, which is about 43 minutes worth. The main theme is a good one, with repeating eighth note rhythms for strings. It represents the film perfectly and is found in "M.I.B. Main Theme" (duh!), "Take Off/Crash", "Finale", and "M.I.B. Closing Theme" with bits and pieces of it occurring in other tracks. The rest of the music consists of orchestra, electronic bass, and percussion. The electronic bass gives the music a comedy feel to it, so you know instantly that it is coming from a comedy film. Another theme is present that is a more restrained theme, which is a nine note phrase that can be found in several tracks throughout, most notably in "D's Memories" and the beginning of "Finale". "Chase" is a cool action cue that Elfman does great at writing, with running strings and driving percussion. "Headquarters" is another track worth mentioning, as well as "Take Off/Crash". "Finale" is a knock out cue that closes the film perfectly when the camera pulls back and reveals the earth from space. Here, Elfman uses a choir to give rise to the orchestral might that is being employed, with the brass section dominating. Danny Elfman is a great composer and this soundtrack is a perfect example of his creative capabilities as one.

4 out of 5 stars MiB - Men In Black.......2001-07-12

Men In Black: (Danny Elfman) I sat down on my couch, a DVD of MiB in my player. As soon as it starts, those four cello notes hauntingly fade in... and out. I knew I was in for a good film, but I hadn't realized Mr. Elfman was doing the score. Wow! is all I can say. The score is powerful and driving, yet comedic and funny with the film. Perfect for a comedy about aliens living in New York. However, readers be warned, if you want to get the full drive of the score, get the film. With the CD you can hear something happened - say, a cue, but you don't know what. It's like telling a joke and being denied the punchline. However, this is a fantastic score, and it's great if you buy the CD. I give it a four, because it has more impact with the film. In Film: ***** On CD: **** All in all: *****

5 out of 5 stars elfman earns an Oscar nod with this one.......2000-11-06

danny elfman merges electronic sounds with orchestral arrangments to make this unique and quirky score. besides the REALLY cool main theme, there are moments that are reflective, moments that are creepy, and moments that are action-packed, pulsing with energy.

Men In Black is VERY good, a mature work from Elfman.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection.......2007-03-05

I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Something very precious.......2004-11-16

John Philip Sousa was a great musician and a great American. These recorded relics are very fascinating, and sometimes most vivid, reminders of his greatness

5 out of 5 stars Great historical resource.......2000-08-24

This set consists of every recording released under the name of "the Sousa Band", from 1897-1930. Since some of these recordings are over 100 years old, they tend to be somewhat scratchy and occasionally faint. If you're a casual fan or you're buying your first Sousa record, your money can be better spent elsewhere.

However, these recordings are an invaluable resourse for students, performers, and teachers. Even with the limitations of early recording devices, there is no better demonstration of the style and nuance of the "March King" than these performances under his own baton. Also, the chance to actually hear Sousa's voice as he introduces the great "Stars and Stripes Forever" is to step into the past.

5 out of 5 stars Still as good as ever!!.......2006-10-30

I originally bought this album on cassette when it was first released, cos I didn't have a cd player at the time. 9 years later, after probably hundreds of plays, that poor tape got so worn out I had to try and find it on cd....which just DIDN'T happen in any Australian store, or any place I could order it here. Amazon, however, came to my rescue! Even after almost a decade, this music is still as good as it was in '97, and anyone who says otherwise needs their head read!

4 out of 5 stars This is a very good album.......2006-01-21

Anyone who enjoys good R&B music will get much enjoyment from this CD. Nas also has a very good rap track on this CD. A good mix of various artists. This CD offers a soothing and relaxing aray of tracks. To tell u the truth I was suprised how good this CD was, I only bought it for the Ginuwine track. My other favorite track would have to be Trey Lorenz's "Make u happy".

4 out of 5 stars A Good Album.......2005-10-11

This is a good album for cruisin', blazin', and just chillin' to. If it's a cold ass day outside, then just kick it with this album in your stereo. I like this album because it has different types of tracks on it. Some are good for bumpin', some are good for grindin', ya dig? Anyway, cop this album, it's a good one for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Title of the original.......2005-10-03

The title of the original song was Forget Me Nots and I'm pretty sure it was by Patrice Rushen.

5 out of 5 stars I discovered Sibelius with this CD.......2001-03-18

I'm a big fan of Mattila and of art song. But Sibelius was mostly unfamiliar to me (except for some of his symphonies) until this disc. I especially liked the final cut, Jubal. The accompaniment here is minimalist with Mahlerian touches. Mattila sings exquisitely throughout. If you like songs by Brahms, Mahler, or Strauss, expand your knowledge horizon with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Voice - Beautiful Music.......2000-11-17

I especially liked the songs "Var det en dröm?" and "Norden", but all of these songs are beautifully sung throughout. Karita Mattila has the perfect voice for these songs. Her voice is soft, yet strong, and the cool color is used well especially in "Norden". It is also clear that she understands every word she is singing.

This record is also a great introduction to Sibelius songs, for those who are not already familiar with them. There are also wonderful recordings of Sibelius songs by Jorma Hynninen, Tom Krause and Anne-Sofie von Otter, that I highly recommend.

The selection of songs for this cd is excellent, however unable to leave well enough along they include overblown intros, restarts, embellishments etc making the original tune almost unrecognizable. The arranger should be shot.

Given the massive box-office success of the original Men in Black, the only real surprise was that it took Hollywood five years to crank out the loopy, CGI-laden sequel. Composer Danny Elfman keeps the original MIB creative team intact, weighing in with a typically energetic orchestral score that dutifully ratchets up the suspense and punctuates the action. But it's a largely connect-the-dots exercise; aside from the deliciously loungy pair of Austin Powers-savvy bossa novas that bookend his work here ("Worm Lounge #1 (Worms in Black)," "Worm Lounge #2"), there's a sometimes uncomfortable lack of originality (let alone melodicism) in much of what remains. The tense, workmanlike efficiency works fine with the film, but longtime fans may find this a decidedly McElfman listening experience. Still, the soundtrack ends on an a pair of appropriately goofy/cheesy notes: Tim Blaney's gravel-voiced Frank the Pug crooning "I Will Survive" with grating canine fervor and the duet of Will Smith and Tra-Knox gettin' jiggy with the hip-hop/Bond music hybrid "Black Suits Comin' (Nod Ya Head)." --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars I like movie soundtracks ..........2007-01-12

but the only song I like on this one is "Nod ya head (Black suits comin'). It's the original version in its entirety. Will Smith's "Greatest Hits" has a different version than this. If you buy MP3's online, then just download this one song. Otherwise, the CD is a waste of money. Sorry, Will!

5 out of 5 stars great!!!!!!.......2003-01-21

It is a great C.D.!!!! Everyone will like it. Also it is ok for children! It is my favorite C.D. Also there is no profanity. It is better than the first.

4 out of 5 stars Elfman is back in black.......2002-11-04

Danny Elfman, having scored the first Men in Black is back again scoring the sequel. No other composer could have done it but Danny Elfman. This score is much more groovier than the first. Elfman uses the Men in Black theme much more in this one than in the first. It is not exactly the same as the theme from the first, as little variations are thrown in to make it a bit different. In fact, almost every track uses the M.I.B. theme in some way or another. When you first put the CD in the player, this hip-hop tune starts up. "Worm Lounge #1" is Elfman in crazy form with swinging trumpets, hip-hop bass, and quirky la la vocals. Don't try dancing to this one, it will make you look stupid. Most of the score is groovy sounding with electric guitars along with a rhythm section and a moderately sized orchestra. "Big Jeff" is a thrilling action cue, with firing brass and choir. The chorus is also utilized in other cues, such as "Headquarters". "The Real Story" and "Heart Thump" take a break from the quirkiness music and show a more mellow side. From "The Defense Begins" to "The Finale", the music really takes off and shines. A massive brass section and a thrilling choir showcase these tracks and show Elfman in top form. "I Will Survive", the classic Gloria Gaynor song, shows Tim Blaney singing as "Frank the Pug". It doesn't really sound like singing, but more like talking. Will Smith's song "Black Suits Comin'" is cool and better than his song from the first film. He too is a talented artist and a great actor. However, Elfman is the spotlight of this soundtrack and showcases his incredible writing talents throughout. A thoroughly enjoyable soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Really Great Cd, Elfman Keeps Gettin' Cooler and cooler..........2002-09-14

Well, here I am to report on yet another Danny Elfman score. With super-high expectations for the summer box-office, we were expecting some profound movies. What we got was having the top-grossing film of the summer, "Spider-Man", contain an Elfman score! YES! Now I am here to review "Men In Black 2". Although the first movie was done better and the score was a very common thing of the Elfman of that time, his methods have evolved. I sit here listening to a track from the first "MIB". Then, I will put on an "MIB2" song and compare. ...........Done. The verdict: the "MIB2" score is better than that of the first. "Men In Black 2" has a more frenetic feel than the first one. Plus, almost every track ends in one of the billion transformations of the "MIB" theme, which is a good thing. There's J's theme, that kind of Bond-esque "Do do....do do." There's also K's theme, the really light guitar melody, played at its most weirdly heart-wrenching best in the middle of "J Nabbed/K's Back", it is used again, very well, near the end of "The Light". I only have one question, where is Serleena's theme? She is the villain, all villains have themes. The Green Goblin had one, why can't Serleena have one?! Anyway, on "Chop-Chop", she doesn't get a theme but when you listen to it, you kinda sorta get the sense that shes there. "The Chase" is a really cool song, with synth, bongos, and orchestra in the background. You listen to it and its just really cool. It's kinda "slick" (no reference intended), in that way that only Elfman can deliver it to us, his ever adoring fans. Ah, "The Light". It delivers yet another transformation of the "MIB" theme, then after :25 it just calms down. It turns into someting really mellow and yet cosmic and choral at the same time. Elfman then delivers our pseudo love theme for J and Laura. To me, it isn't pseudo at all. It's a damn love theme to me. I think they should have kissed before she left. Crashing into a motif for the re-emergence of Serleena (she looked like an aerial view of Medusa's head). It calms down again with another showing of the love theme, crescendo-ing strings, to............A BANG FINALE!!! I told you all Elfman scores have one. (See: Batman - Original Motion Picture Score, review name "Elfman's Best Action Score). The CD could have done without Frank singing. Overall, BUY IT! Its really a good CD, if you want a cool vibe in your CD player.

5 out of 5 stars Another feast for Handelians.......2003-12-25

Here's another astonishing piece for all Handelians. Many of Handel's great pieces have sadly been neglected - just like many of Richard Strauss' operas which have only recently received attention from people like Botstein, Korsten and Sinopoli (deceased). Thankfully, Gardiner and his team took the trouble to record this astonishing masterpiece. I simply love this piece - Saul!! The Monteverdi choir is the best in the world - listen to their stunning virtuosity here. Thank you, Gardiner!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent music.......2003-09-14

Saul is one of those lesser known works by Handel. I certainly prefer Solomon, the Messiah or Israel in Egypt. Nevertheless, there is plenty of glorious music in Saul. The Monteverdi sings with their customary virtuosity. Casting of solo parts is superb. A bit on the pricey side but this is an investment that will yield rich dividends over a long period of time. Instead of listening to the Messiah all the time, or Solomon or Jephtha, why not be more daring and explore this lesser known work by Handel?
