It doesn't happen much, but there are times when the departure of a group's most prominent player inspires the rest of the act to get seriously bizzy. Strength & Love, a tight disc that skitters from track to shiny track with imagination and a renewed sense of rap's widened boundaries, makes Bone Thugs-N-Harmony a prime example. Without Bizzy Bone to layer a drizzle of Midwestern vocal weirdness over their sound, Layzie, Krayzie, and Wish Bone call in a crew of hard-hitting helpers: Akon delivers twice, first on the melting "I Tried" and again on the weepy "Never Forget Me," Mariah Carey flits through "Lil Love" alongside Bow Wow, and Twista and Yolanda Adams also make reputation-enhancing appearances (Twista by barreling through "C-Town" at breakneck speed and Adams by giving it up gorgeously for God on "Order My Steps (Dear Lord)"). Best of all about this proud-making comeback disc is its clever use of samples: "Wind Blow" pins the Fleetwood Mac chestnut "The Chain" down to urban pavement without wrecking its spirit, and the smartly produced "The Streets" updates the vibe of Bobby Womack's timeless "Across 110th Street" while preserving its grit-covered class. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Bone Thugs #1.......2007-07-24

Every track on this cd is good ive been a bonethugz fan ever since i could listen to music i grew up with most of there music so i was excited when i found out they where comin out with a new cd if you like bone thugs at all you should get this.

5 out of 5 stars Lead Me, Guide Me.......2007-07-21

This track & "I Tried" are two of the best tracks I've heard from anyone in years.
I would compare them to DMX & 2Pac.
Keep up the great work guys.

4 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2007-07-14

Bone Thugs come back strong with this latest addition. Their sound has been updated, but is still recognizable as uniquely Bone Thugs

3 out of 5 stars OK .......2007-07-13

I was a bit disapointed because there are only two or three songs on the CD that I play. I guess my expectations were too high and too reminiscent of their old stuff. My son plays it non stop, hence the reason 3 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Their best since The Art Of War.......2007-07-08

To me,this is the Bone cd is the best since the Art Of War. I liked some tracks off of Resurrection, and Thug Stories was the best cd in a long time, but this tops both of those albums with no problem at all. I like every track on here except for 2 of them. Tha Bone boys are back and they brought they fire flow that they were known for in the begining!!!

If you still doubt this groups talent then listen to the album opener Flow Motion...makes my jaw drop every time that I hear that track!
Bump In The trunk should become another Bone classic. They actually make "Wind Blow" work 100%! The first single is a sad song about trying in life, but also kind of inspirational at the same time. C-Town with Twista is awesome, everyone tears their verse up! 9mm and Gun Blast remind me of them 'ole Bone Boys classicks!!!

If you ever been a fan of Bone, then pick this classick up! Bone boys are back 110%!

3 out of 5 stars Neither Circus nor Spectacular, but it is Karl King........2006-10-15

Having played a number of times under Karl King, I had great expectations for this CD. Alas, it was not to be. The music is there, the musicians play all the right notes and the conductor keeps time. The recording is only mediocre, of Laserlight quality, and the performance is not what I expected from what they call a "Circus Band." Indeed, the liner notes state that the band is mostly students and professionals from the Philadelphia area. In other words, a "pick up" band. And the conductor seems to have no circus experience only small town symphony experience (from the puffery in the liner notes). From listening, it would appear that he has never even heard a real circus band. Both conductor and band would not last a day at a real circus. I do have a suspicion, however, that the musicians would do better under a better conductor.

Now, if they called themselves a concert band, that would be accurate and fair, and would not have dashed my hopes, as they are OK as a concert band. But just OK.

Of course, a concert band can indeed generate all the excitement of a bona fide circus band, as Frederick Fennell so aptly demonstrated on his Mercury recordings.

Now, if you want real circus music played by a real circus band, get a Merle Evans recording.

However, having said all that, I will keep the album, as I have always been a Karl King fan, and it is fine music decently played by an OK concert band.

5 out of 5 stars Great circus music.......2005-08-12

I needed some circus music to promote a fundraiser our Lion's club was having (a circus). I got the CD on time and it sounded great. I could not find this type of music anywhere else. Thanks.

3 out of 5 stars Good music, mediocre playing.......2001-11-19

It was indeed exciting to find so many of Karl King's marches on one disc. The band's playing, however leaves a lot to be desired, as does the sound quality of the disc. The balance is poor, with a very annoying tenor sax playing loud and out-of-tune on every cut. Buy this if you are a march collector (which I am), but I do not recommend it for its entertainment value. Get the "Screamers" disc by Fennell and Eastman for a far superior set of circus marches with great playing and sound.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Circus Spectacular.......2000-12-07

Certainly the best thing about this CD is that there are many of Karl King's marches that have probably never been recorded previously, which is curious, since some of them rank with his best. The curious thing about this CD, on the other hand, is that it is supposedly a circus album, but only a few marches were actually written for the "big top". This band is not the best I have heard - recommend listening with headphones, to get a much clearer, less muddled sound. King was only kind of a contemporary of Sousa, having lived 35-40 years later. He actually published more marches than Sousa, and generally wrote in a style that was "softer" than the March King. Sousa wrote mostly military-style marches (better than anyone else ever has, of course), whereas King wrote many military as well as circus marches, and marches in a simpler style, suitable for school bands.

5 out of 5 stars Circus Spectacular.......2000-08-12

This recording of music by Karl King is absolutely splendid -it contains 28 tracks most of which I have certainly not heard before - I particularly liked the tempos of the marches - not too quick but just right - the band is good (although I had never heard of them) - I came across this recording by chance and I'm glad I did - highly recommended

"Most Lutherans aren't musicians; they're choir members," says Prairie Home Companion creator Garrison Keillor. In "The Young Lutheran's Guide to the Orchestra," he further comments, "Cellists seem like such nice people. The way they put their arms around their instruments, they look like parents at a daycare center, zipping up snowsuits." Such is the droll National Public Radio humor he embodies; listeners either adore or disparage him for his pedestrian slice of Midwestern nostalgia. Here in 1989, in front of a hometown audience with the majestic Minnesota Orchestra, Keillor holds court, bearish baritone intermingling with French horn and strings. He dishes on everything from patriotism to Powdermilk Biscuits to orchestral instruments in the context of Christianity and good Christians, particularly that ever dry hot-dish-eating Lutheran sect in the Minneapolis region. Keillor is like big brother home from college, poking fun at his family upon seeing them with fresh eyes. Delightful. --Paige La Grone

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lake Wobegon Loyaly Days.......2007-02-13

This record by Garrison Keillor is both subtle and also hilarious. The anthem of the Sons of Knute stands out as a comic masterpiece. It is closely follwed in quality by the tale of the Radio Announcer which incorporates Garrison Keillor's brand of quiet desperation with comic genius. The record audience is clearly Keillor addicts and completely in his thrall, as the listener soon is too.
One can play this record over and over and still find new subleties in its construction. This is a rare American comic genius who can pull quiet fun at America in the kindest way.

2 out of 5 stars Garrison keillor.......2006-08-14

I have been a big fan of Garrison for about 20 years. I loved his first works. This last one I purchased 'Lake Wobegon Loyalty Days has too much music and not enough story telling, which he does best.

5 out of 5 stars Keillor At His Best.......2005-10-26

This is one of my favorite Keillor CD's. It reminds one of a more simple, peaceful and happy time.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Garrison Does it Again.......2004-06-24

After shuffling this CD around for some time (I had sort of "inherited" it from my father, and just hadn't gotten around to listening to it), I finally gave it a go on the stereo...and was utterly delighted. Here is a wonderful example of Keillor's work - warmly poking fun at his home state, making his classic commentary on Lutheranism, and peeking a little into his past. It makes for great comedy, and wonderful listening.

Let's go through this sequentially, shall we? The "Whoopi Ti-Yi-Yo" piece is great - the song about a humorist's work, set to cattle-rustling music is such a clever concept, you'll have to hear it for yourself. Just the fact that he mentions his "hand-carved, hand-tooled ballpoint" makes it an instant Keillor classic. The "Sons of Knute", set to Grieg's Homage March is wonderful, as well - such silly lyrics ("Sons of Knute, marching to freedom...") set to such a noble composition - it's a marriage made in heaven. "The Young Lutheran's Guide to the Orchestra" will surely go down as one of the great Keillor works - it's pure genius. His description of each instrument's sound, and what one should associate it with, is guaranteed to draw laughter from the stodgiest curmudgeon. And, of course, the analysis of each instrument's player - priceless. "The Radio Announcer" is classic Keillor nostalgia, touched with hilarity, and bittersweet memory - the outcome of his college radio career is absolutely knee-slapping. Finally, the "Song of the Exiles" shows Keillor at his best - almost hypnotizing in his ability to capture in words the character of a place, time and surrounding experience. Here is where his work truly shines, and it is the perfect way to wind up the album. Through it all, the Minnesota Orchestra accompanies beautifully, enhancing perfectly Keillor's written word. Everything falls into place seamlessly.

I can honestly say that this CD is among my top twenty, and is never far from my stereo. It fits my every mood, and I never tire of it. If you're a fan of Keillor, it's a must-have. If you're new to his work, here's a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Gentle, Tasteful Humor.......2003-04-17

Heard "Young Lutheran's Guide to the Orchestra" on the radio and just had to have it. Along with this great cut, discovered other material in the same great vein as Keillor's other stuff.

"The Radio Announcer" piece is but one such example, here his story of young college kid who wants to impress Renee, but finds future life's work in so doing. "And now, without commerical intervention, J.S. Bach's St. Matthew Passion" Off to the library! Hilarious and entertaining.

Neat stuff to share with all ages, from this classic storyteller who can also sing the blues as well as yodel.

For the past 10 years, Queensbridge has proven itself the unofficial home of criminal-minded hip-hop. Some of it's been good, some bad, but the QB sound is consistently grimy. And Screwball, a crew that's been around for considerably more than a hot minute, represent their 'hood in fine style. Having bounced from Tommy Boy Records, the group, which includes KL, Hostyle, Poet, and Kyron, decided to release their sophomore album on a smaller label, and the move seems to have liberated them. Loyalty is 100-percent unadulterated, down-and-dirty street music. It features live beats, tight rhymes, and guest stars Kool G. Rap, M.O.P, and Cormega, each adding depth to the final product. More importantly, it has what so many so-called street albums have being missing for a while--a genuine love for the music. As Cormega says on the title track, "Loyalty's worth more than wealth." The purity of Screwball's Loyalty is a welcome confirmation. --Rebecca Levine

Just over a year since their classic debut the 4 man QB group is back. Like most of the reviewers said, not as good as "Y2K" (not many albums are as it's one of the 5 best rap albums ever in my opinion) but still a solid 4 star album. For fans of Screwball you know what to expect, pure grimy steet gangsta rap, nothing else (what do you expect from QueensBridge). Packed with 16 songs, you get 2 classics, another 2 that are almost classics, 4 ok songs, and the other 8 are good or great songs. Once again the guest list is straight street rappers like their debut, and they're on about half the songs. Once again each member drops a tight solo song. Production is good as well. Godfather Don does 6 songs, Ayatollah does 4, Mike Heron, SPK, Beatnuts and 3 cats I never heard of all do 1 song. Once again a must have for fans of that QB street rap.

Yo, there's only SEVEN tight azz songs out of NINETEEN tracks! That leaves..TWELVE Average or wack azz songs. What the hell is that all about? I'll admit that Screwball has maddd talent, but i don't think they spent enough time on this album. Yo, maybe they came up with these songs all in a week..i dunno..but n-e-wayz...stay up Screwball. Peace.

man screwball fell off..anyone who listened to their first album knows this. The lyrics dont even compare and the beats are beyond weak. I still say Y2K is one of the illest albums of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch QB Hardcore.......2002-04-14

Screwball perhaps eclipses their previous release, Y2K. Like a Gangsta, Where You At?, Live and Let Die, Torture, When the Sun Goes Down, I Spit, Loyalty, Gorillas, Too High Too Low, Streetlife, and Screwed Up are the top tracks. The only song I didn't like was Gotta Believe, an out of place R&B song. That thing that makes this album great are the beats, lyrics, MCing, and guest spots. Production is mostly done by Ayatollah and Godfather Don, but they get help from The Beatnuts, F Bee 4, Goodie Goodman, Mike Heron, Stone, and SPK. Good guest spots are put in by Matrix Bars, MOP, Black Attack, Noreaga, Kool G Rap, Tragedy, and The Beatnuts. Overall, an excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars One of the hottest ever.......2007-05-30

First of all let me say that I'm sick of reviewers saying that Joe is just aimed on going commercial. Coming out with a few party tracks on your cd isn't bad. Biggie, and 2pac did it as well, and many reviewers put them at the top. I believe fat joe is slept on b/c he is a latino. If he was black he would probably get more props. I'm black but I've been around latinos alot. Puerto Ricans have influenced rap just as much as the blacks and the jamaicans, but they fell to give them their props. Personally my favorite fat joe cd is jealous one's envy. But this album is a great listen from beginning to end. Enough party tracks, enough deep tracks, and take a look at my life is probably on of his top three songs ever. Not only is it a hype crunk song, it is also an anthem. Compare his party songs to the party songs nowadays. Now those songs are commercial. They don't have any talent. Fat joe can still spit as hard on party tracks as well as others. BUY THIS ALBUM.

      1 out of 5 stars Loyalty to what? (1 and 1/2 stars).......2006-11-30

Wow! All these five star reviews for this album is kind of questionable. Let me start by saying that Don Cartegena was Fat Joe's best album. After Big Pun died Fat Joe went pop with the quickness and put out his worst album at that time J.O.S.E. Fat Joe has been in a downward spiral into hip pop hell ever since and he keeps it moving with this one. There are four standout tracks which are Take A Look At My Life, Gangsta, We Run This S*** and Prove Something. Fillers: Bust at you is unwashed butt plus anytime Birdman has a better verse than you in a song you need to retire promptly. In Born in the ghetto he tries to get deep but falls on his face. Turn me on would turn off the most skankiest broads(yes its that bad), Ts Piece is a wack club record that would clear any dance floor(even [...] ones LOL), Loyalty is wack plus the subliminal diss he threw at Cuban Link has to be the softest subliminal in rap history. Dont get me started on the slew of songs for the ladies he has on here(Crush Tonight, Turn Me On, All I Need etc. Read the chorus for Life Goes on and tell me if Fat Joe isnt guilty of statutory rape:/she was sixteen/maybe seventeen/I was eighteen/ nineteen/ maybe a little bit more/ YIKES!!! There you have it another garbage album from a rapper who made a song with Paris Hilton(WTF WAS HE THINKING?).

4 out of 5 stars a very hot album for joe.......2006-11-13

I really like this album.I used to think fat joe was wack but now with this album,he changrd my mind.he has hot singles such as"All I Need and Crush Tonight".The guest appearrances on this album are hot too.you need to pick this up and add it to your collection

      5 out of 5 stars Fat Joe's best.......2005-12-07

In a time, wherer pop-sells, alot of rappers have given into, changing they're gangsta style, to accomadate what the media wants (i.e. Ja Rule, 50 Cent etc.). Fat Joe has been known to give into this, the recent release of All Or Nothing proves that. But this album proved otherwise, a real good CD, with nothing but hard hitting, quality rap. A surprise, considering there is so much frontin' and pop going on out there. I just wish Joe could have made more records like this. Nonetheless, I definetely enjoy this record.

      Track for track:

"Take a Look at My Life" A real good song, with a menacing beat, where he's saying how gangsta he is and telling all haters to shut it. Something tells me that this guy isn't frontin'.

"Bust At You" nice song, basically telling all the haters again to screw off, nice chorus sung by Terror Squad member Tony Sunshine, good verse by Scarface, and an awesome verse by Baby, Joe isn't too bad either. Nice flute as background music.

"Prove Something" Joe's awesome lyrically on this song, again just saying, don't f*ck with Terror Sqaud.

"TS Piece" nice, slower laid back song, featuring a great chorus sung again by Tony Sunshine (real good singer, i think he's way underrated)a cool verse spit by Remy Ma. Songs about the luxuries of being famous, and the relationships you get into. Real cool song

"It's Nothing" real cool song, emphasizing how loyalty from his fans paid off, and how all this fame and accesories, to him is nothing compared to loyalty. Real cool song, with great lyrics

"Turn Me On" sort of an annoying song, some chic sings an annoying chorus, Joe's good lyrically, but overall the song is sort of weak, saying how much of a ladies man he is...sort of an overplayed theme in music these days, gets old fast

"Born in the Ghetto" God i love this song, such meaningful rapping in the verses by Joe, about the struggles of life in the ghetto, and living with prejidices constantly being hurled at you. A great chorus sung, by Lamajic (who is he?), real pain in his voice i like it. Joe raps with a sort of "been there done that" approach, i like it.

"Crush Tonight" Awesome party song, with a beatt, sure to make clubs go wild. memorable chorus sung by Ginuwine and good rapping by Joe.

"Gangsta" Deep song explaining the process of how he turned to the life of a gangster, claiming it was because he saw his father live like that.

"All I Need" Awesome song, Joe and Armagedon (Terror Squad member) explain how their wives assume they are cheating just because they are always on tour, this song is dedicated to explaining that just cause they are on tour that doesn't mean that they are cheating. Joe and Armagedon claim that they're wives are the greatest things in their life, and that they'd be stupid to give that up.Great chorus by Tony Sunshine again.

"Life Goes On" Another meaningful song, about how he had gotten a girl pregnant once, and how he is telling her that he is sorry, but how he can't let that and other mistakes hold him down because life goes on.

"Loyalty" This is a song, with a killer beat, and impressive verses by all Terror Squad members (Armagedon, Prospect, Remy Ma) except Tony Sunshine. All of them claim they're loyalty to Terror Squad, and they'll f*ck anyone up if they mess with the Squad. All they're rhyming is phenominal, especially Armagedon and Prospect. Fat Joe, is rather average in this song...

"We Run This Sh*t" Sort of annoying, all it is is Joe repping the Terror Squad, saying that they run this sh*t. Skippable.

"Sh*t Is Real Part III" Real deep track, adressing, the pain Joe felt after Big Pun's death, the overwehlming amount of disloyalty he has experienced in his life, and the struggle of ghetto life. Memorable chorus but Joe, awesome way to end an awesome album.

This album is really a classic in my book, the genious way in which the tracks where made, how they each had a story to tell, unlike the bull sh*t you see on MTV today, was just amazing. Joe raps with such an amazing "Been there, done that" scheme, it 's hard to believe he's fronting. After hearing this amazing record, i thought to myself, are you people friggin' blind? how on earth could anyone like 50 Cent or G-Unit more than this sh*t. I guess, pop sells, but in my book Joe will always be one of the realest rappers, that didn't give into all this media sh*t until the very end.

5 out of 5 stars 5th solo is on point once again - 4.5 stars.......2005-06-23

After just one year since his 4 star "J.O.S.E." album Fat Joe is back with another 4.5 star album and my favorite of his (tied with "Don Cartagena" & "All or Nothing" - I don't have his first 2 albums). As with his previous 2 albums it has 14 songs, and a bunch of producers who do a good job (9 different ones, and basically the same ones he always uses). Cool & Dre do 5 songs, Buckwild, Alchemist, Irv Gotti & Chink Santana, Ty Fyffe, Precision, Armageddon, Ron Browz, and Teflon all do 1 track. Guests are on a good deal of the songs (4 have guest rappers and 5 have guests on the hooks). It has some gangsta songs, some about hustling and some good deep ones he always therows in there, as well as a dirtier one. It has 1 classic, 1 near classic, 2 ok songs, and the rest are mostly great and a few good ones. A must have album for fans of Joey Crack.
