The Evolution Of Excelsior.......2007-02-02
A lot of attention has been drawn to the cover. Many fans lauded the hand-drawn look of the cover, and some said that it dissuaded them from buying the album. However, the album has a folk-art quality about it, in that it does not purport to be a product of artifice. In an era where so mnay rappers were boasting about non-existant riches, Loki stepped away and made a personal epic about his own trials and triumphs. This personal approach to muzicc was no doubt jarring to fans who merely wanted musical theatre.
The production on this album, as well as the lyrical content, is miles ahead of anything on Loki's previous "illegitimati" album. Strings and powerful drums create a backdrop for the drama described in Loki's lyrics, delivered with a more confident and complex style than his previous work.
Loki would go on to collaborate with X-Raided on the "Ignition" album, another triumph of artistic development for Loki.
Perhaps the most concise and focused Siccmade album...period!
Ever heard the saying "Don't judge a book by its cover"?.......2007-01-09
I was a big fan of Loki's debut album, 'Illegitimati', which was released on the same label (Siccmade Records) in the year 2000 (cue Conan O'Brien's faux-falsetto); and Loki doesn't disappoint with this, his sophomore release. And while '21 Gun Salute' is quite different from the previously mentioned 'Illegitimati' -- much more personal and introspective -- Loki doesn't stray so far as to disregard or neglect his large group of faithful followers that have been down since his early days rhyming with Mr. Doctor on his classic Sacramento debut album, 'Setrippin Bloccstyle' (don't own it? buy it NOW).
I could go on and on about this album, breaking down each and every song, its intricacies, and why it's far better than the vast majority of rap records that oversaturate the market beyond belief... but then again... would that even be saying much?
Either way, this is an album that's seemingly slipped under the radar of a lot of fans. This is good music. It's not without flaws, of course. Some beats I could've done without. Some (most) guest appearances I could've done without. But Loki shines on this album, he's making music that he believes in, not just music that he believes will cash him the biggest check. I appreciate that. So should you.

Chalkline-honest and a very personal album.......2004-10-01
This album is definitely more along the lines of chalkline-honest than his freshman album. Even his voice contains more confidence. And the lyrics are more conscious, no doubt.
As far as Siccmade goes, it is a label that continues to distinguish itself via its artists as having very distinct sounds. In a game that is usually a copy of a copy of a copy, Siccmade albums generally have very different themes and feels and spits and beats and everything else. This album is a perfect example of such originality. In my opinion, it holds you all the way through.
As far as this jewel, I like the in media res. of the most of the songs. I looked at the back cover while listening to the first few tracks, and that feeling pretty much summed up the album. The bleeding holes from ripped-out wings signifying mortality. Bullet casings falling from fingers, the strempth of Loki's very own sense of self preservation falling where they fall. He with no worries. Just walking to his block. A self-made mortal. Tight.
This is a very personal album.
As far as the album goes, I've been holding that "pitbull by the scruff of its neck" each day; it's been in rotation every day. Twice today, for that matter.
The first time I listened to it, I thoght that the first track was tight. The second was so tight that it swallowed the verse on Get High, Get Drunk. The third, too.
Etc.
They are all tight, with my absolute favorite being Once Again. It was the opening that got me. Probably the love of writing coming across in me as I listened.
Outside was a sky the color of decay and the eyes of dead men
At the corner store, he studied his hands as he waited in line
Rough hands, a killer's hands.
Very tight track-
All in all, he put a lot of depth and feels into this album. I definitely back it. Especially this year, this year of buying albums that I listen to three times and then shelve as a memento of wasted moneys. This gets a 21-gun salute, Sir Loki-
