Add 3121 to the mounting pile of evidence: Prince is the black Beck. He's a whole lot sexier, no doubt, but there's more to both musicians than image. All-out weirdness for one. Edginess for another. And a fine-tuned sense of how to combine the two to create some of the decade's most vital music for a third. Prince--looking ageless in videos for the first two singles, the controversy-courting "Black Sweat" and the sauna-steeped "Te Amo Corazon"--proves fearless as ever here, folding fat slabs of disco-funk into rock, heaping measured doses of hip-hop atop soul-tinted jazz supports, and slamming Latin rhythms against old-school R&B riffs. Nothing sounds as slinky-stylish-smart. And nobody delivers quite so deliciously, especially when what they're delivering is ultimately a madcap sonic mash. The usual hype surrounding a Prince release attended this one; over the long-term, expect a few standouts within a way worth-it set to emerge. They include the danceable "Love"; the gospel-lite falsetto feast "Satisfied"; and the summer-breezy "Beautiful, Loved & Blessed." --Tammy La Gorce

YES! the Prince I know and love is back!! This is a great CD! I need to run out and buy his new one now.. What a talented artist!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastically Funky.......2007-07-25

I absolutely love this album. More than a year after its release, I am still bumping to 3121. It is a splendid mix of funk and soul with enough rock to satiate the diverse musical palates that Prince's music attracts. There are so many standout songs on this album - some hit you like Bernard Hopkins jab right out the gate and others grow on you over time. My favorite tracks are the slinky Black Sweat, the romantic Te Amo Corazon with its beautiful string accompaniment, The Word - this song is just awesome, Get On the Boat - the bass and drums just do it for me on this one, the lovely ballad The Dance and the sexy ballad Incense and Candles, and Fury the solid rocker that I love to blast. All in all, you cannot go wrong with this one.

1 out of 5 stars Tammy La Gorce: Does Not Know What She's Talking About.......2007-07-24

I normally do not comment to other reviews, but Tammy La Grace's review was so bad and misguided that I was compelled. First. the fact that she calls prince a "black Beck." How insulting is that! Prince created several genre's of music before Beck was even out of grade school. Your comment that "All-out weirdness for one. Edginess for another. And a fine-tuned sense of how to combine the two to create some of the decade's most vital music for a third." Frankly, those statements are plain dumb and meaningless. Think about, "combining" weirdness and edginess makes prince a black beck. That's like saying Jimi Hendrix is the Black Jimmy Page because both where great guitarists and both pushed the boundaries of music--that's dumb. Again, your statement is insulting to the artist and fan base and you should reconsider your comparison.

5 out of 5 stars C'mon Do I REALLY need to Review this album?.......2007-07-04

c'mon do I REALLY need to review this album?? Prince is one of the rare artist who transcends time. Some artist made a name for themselves with covers of other peoples music and may have inspired people with a limited palate, but Prince has ALWAYS been doing his thing, NONSTOP! You know when you buy a Prince album, the only thing to expect is the unexpected. Do I really need to review this album? You're joking right? It's PRINCE for crying outloud. :0)

4 out of 5 stars Prince funkadelic album.......2007-06-29

I had bought this Prince album for my girlfriend, since she is a big Price fan. The only albums that I really love from Prince are "Purple Rain" and "1999" Know, I know that Prince had released some experimental albums, where he got more away from Rock/Funk and more into jazz, and those were OK. Some of his solo albums after Purple Rain, however, not so good. This is the best Prince release since Purple Rain. There are some great Funk songs on this album, and Prince seems like he is back with a vengence. There is some mild filler here, that makes it short from perfect, but still a great album. If you want Funk, this is the album to get.

Rock's most sure-handed journeyman, Paul Carrack is slowly working his way around to singing with every band in existence. And why not? He's had success with more than a few already, scoring hits with Ace ("How Long"), Squeeze ("Tempted"), Mike & the Mechanics ("Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground")), and as a duet partner with Carlene Carter ("Do Me Lover"). The Paul Carrack Collection combines those tracks (plus some others) with the cream of Carrack's solo work, including the hit "I Need You." Carrack is perhaps the most-heard, least-known vocalist in rock, though this set goes a long way toward righting that wrong. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Great tribute to Paul Carrack's music career.......2006-06-26

I have to say that Paul Carrack has to be one of the best pop singers to do well in bands as well as solo. They do a good job compiling his best hits with Ace (How Long), Squeeze (Tempted), Mike and the Mechanics and his solo hits (Don't Shed A Tear). But my favorite solo song from Paul is One Good Reason from 1987 as that song rocks big time, from the horns to the guitars! Unfortunately, Don't Shed A Tear was played more during that time and One Good Reason got only some minor buzz. Reason seemed more comfortable to some with the low key rock guitar. But the other songs are good candidates to this effort. Paul just loves to perform and this collection justifies his major success as an artist for close to 3 decades.

5 out of 5 stars Nice collection for a good singer/composer.......2006-01-25

"Twenty-One Good Reasons" provides a good presentation to the music (and the voice) of Paul Carrack. Ace, Squeeze, Carlene Carter and even Mike & The Mechanics have received the benefits of working with such a good performer like Mr. Carrack. If you are seriously engaged with 70s Pop & Rock music, this CD is A MUST for you!

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite cd's.......2005-10-29

This, by far, is one of my favorite cd's. Paul Carrack has one of the most fabulous voices around and I believe, is very underrated. This is an awesome cd and great to have on when cleaning--you can't help singing along to! :) Love the tracks with Carlene Carter! A must have for even the slightest fan. I was lucky enough to see him perform with Ringo Starr (in his All-Star Band)and his voice is still so smooooooth!!

5 out of 5 stars More than pleased!.......2004-11-10

This compilation of Paul Carrick is no less than wonderful! It's got all of his major songs, both solo and with groups. The sound is great and the songs are all really great. I'm very pleased with it! If you are a Paul Carrack fan and/or pop/rock fan, you need this in your collection! It's out-of-print, but worth looking for, I'm glad I did!

5 out of 5 stars Master of Quality Music.......2004-01-19

In a career thats spanned 3+ decades, Paul Carrack's voice has not wained from his bluesy smooth sound that is always refreshing. Many recognize the voice but not the name, even with that said though every band he's been with has had a hit with his lyricism and voice.
These days of bubble gum groups that put out mindless drum track songs are a blight on the music scene when you have such a renowned and fantastic artist such as Paul Carrack who gets little recognition.
The tracks on this CD are 100% excellence in music. From his beginnings in Ace, to his accompanyment with Carlene Carter, to his days with Mike and The Mechanics, it's a CD you can listen to 100 times and always enjoy listening to it again.
While the CD is now Out Of Print, I would reccomend it highly to anyone who enjoys quality music and even higher quality vocals.
This is a must have for anyones collection!!!

5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2004-10-12

I bought this album for Twilight Zone, a song I've loved since I was a toddler. This was my first real CD purchase and I listened to it for quite a long time before purchasing Moontan and others. Cut, does of course, contain the near 8 minute version of their late 1982-early 1983 hit Twilight Zone. It also contains some other enjoyable classics suchbas Future and Lost And Found. There's also Last Of The Mohicans, which sounds a lot like their vinyl b-side to Twilight Zone, King Dark. The Devil Made Me Do It is another of their classics and was featured in two movies in the US: Frankie And Johnnie with Al Pacino and Michelle Pheiffer as well as Best Of The Best. It worked as an introduction album for me, and it might for you as well. As always, I must recommend buying the Bloody Buccaneers/Face It combo, as well as the two disc Last Blast Of The Century.

5 out of 5 stars Versatile JAZZ PIANIST.......2004-07-08

This female Jazz pianist can play from traditional jazz to free form, classic music, bebop style. That is this pianist has a wide range of musical capacity. In this album GERI plays her original songs with a distinct power and prowess. The sound she makes is so challenging and beautiful.Indeed, there is a crystalized beauty in her touch. In a sense well-controled touch of madness is to be seen. This album is a overlooked and underestimated album. This is a MUST ITEM for jazz piano trio fans.

5 out of 5 stars An Unknown Gem.......2001-11-03

I can't believe I'm the first to review this. Geri's playing on this recording is on par with Chick's on Now He Sings, Now He Sobs. For power packed, mathematical arpeggios soaring over Ron and Tony's propulsion check out RTG, Drummers Song and Feed The Fire. I can only chalk up the pleasure of owning this to living in Boston and talking to the Berklee students in the now defunct Tower Records. If you love the jazz trio format this is a must have.

Album Description

A sometimes rollicking, always graceful rendition of two-piano works by Copland, Infante, Bartok, Rachmaninov and Bennett., this remarkable CD is a veritable United Nations in music. What more could be wished for? We are swept from Aaron Copland's unabashed lover affair with themes he called "recognizably American," to Manuel Infante's graceful piano pieces on Spanish themes. Hungarian composer Bela Bartok then intervenes with his great knowledge and love of folk songs. Bartok wrote 153 progressive piano pieces as teaching exercises for his son, Peter, and later published them in six books called Mikrokosmos. His llife long devotiono to the collecting of folk music is reflected in Bulgarian Rhythm and his New Hungarian Folk Song. Perpetuum Mobile exploits 2nds, 3rds, and 4ths, as well as small silences (rests) which-together with driving speed-give this piece its shape and force. Bartok was a master of counterpoint. And still, the international smorgasbord continues, from Russia to Spain to Hungary to Russia, where we find Sergei Rachmaninov's unforgettable compositions entitled Waltz and the Romance, in the 2nd and 3rd movements of his Suite No. 2. The Suite, in Rachmaninov's romantic, pre-Revolutionary style, has been a staple of the two-piano repertoire since its publication. Our musical continent hopping ends in England with Richard Rodney Bennett, one of the most famous of English composers and pianists. Bennett studied with Pierre Boulez in Paris, and, after returning to Europe, wrote and produced operas, and music for voice, orchestra, and chamber ensembles. He has written many movie scores, among them Far From the Madding Crowd and Alexandra. His Dance Suite has a very contemporary sound and is, appropriately, dedicated to Andre Previn.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Home-made recording at home!?.......2004-06-09

Dreadful, dreadful... just dreadful. Despite the superbly interesting programme, the performance is dull, and uninspired. The recording quality sounds as if you just placed two Radio-Shack microphones in each of the pianos, recorded on a portable, cassette Walkman. The instruments used in the recording may be Steinways, but it is doubtful that quality instruments were used. The entire album sounds like they were recorded on old, unmaintained baby grands, probably model M, instead of finer, larger instruments. The acoustic environment resembles a small, carpetted living room where no reverberation could possibly take place. The sense of harsh, mediocre sound as if my head is stuck in the pianos, with the uninspired performance of these magnificent work is an impressive display of misguided amateurism that deserves to be confined to the same living room where the recording was probalby made.

Twenty String EP is the long-awaited first release from Texas' five-piece Oceanographer. With six songs and 34 minutes it could have been sold as an LP, but Oceanographer insists that it's a precursor to many lengthier releases. It's a cat-nap dream, one you hope you'll return to that night; the in-flight travel agency film you watch on an airplane bound for the horse head nebula; an appetizer at a restaurant that serves only thick sunlight filtered through dusty blinds.

i am wonderfully impressed. these tunes are languid and frenetic in the same sanguine vein. when they play it feels to me as if they are constantly caressing the note right before the massive climax. this leaves me hungry. they allow the audience to synthesize the peak. still dynamic though. so delicate. so ornate. excellent.
