4 out of 5 stars Not as good as The Prequel, but worth buying.......2003-03-14

The way I understand it is that this is not an official Atoms Fam release, just a compilation of whats to come from C.P. Records, and assosiated artists. I personally think this is a very dope compilation. The Aesop Rock joint is sick. For some reason they don't give production credit on that song, but I think it's a Cryptic One beat. Everything else on this album is either extremley ill, or tolerable. Nothing on it really struck me as terrible. The only reason I didn't give it 5 *'s was because of the rediculously long intro and outros. Other than that, its nearly a perfect hip hop compilation. If you haven't heard much of Atoms you should probably try to find the Prequel, before buying this one. They are also re-releasing the very hard to find EP "Centa of the Web", which is as hard to stop listening to as it is hard to find original copies of.

4 out of 5 stars not a bad black metal album!.......2004-01-26

This is a rather old CD, so if quality is what you're looking for, just stop reading this right now and go find a Dimmu CD. But if you can stand the low sound quality and very harsh vocals, then this CD just might be your cup of tea. There are some keyboards in here that add a lot of atmosphere. The last song is one of the strangest things I've ever heard. The first 4 minutes are techno and okay, but then there's a pause, and it drags on to like a 14:40 mark with horrible production. So really, this album is only about 33 minutes long. The first song is the one that stands out, and it includes the CDs piano intro. That song is 7 minutes, but the rest are very short. If there was a remastered version of this CD, then I'm sure it would receive 5 stars.

Although the production isn't top-notch due to its age, there is a lot of talent showed by this band. Think of what Stratovarius's Fourth Dimension and Helloween's Keeper of the Seven Keys were like. Despite the quality, those are very good albums. With black metal, it's tougher to keep the listener's interest with a lower sound quality. Ancient just couldn't do it for me (I reviewed Cainian Chronicle), so I got Proxima Centauri, which is a newer album by Ancient. Do yourself a favor - at least give the amazon samples a try. If you're not satisfied, try downloading something somewhere. Although not every black metal fan deserves this in their collection, who does will be pleased.

Do me a favor and read some of my other reviews, particularly Cainian Chronicle. When you get the chance, say if this review helped your or not please.

5 out of 5 stars a thousand rivers.......2001-09-05

it is the lyrics on this disc that have made me realize that it does not just deserve the 4 stars i had given it before, but the full 5 star rating... simply reading lyrics "A Thousand Rivers" and "Carven" could be enough to make you want the CD, with lines like "Betrayed by the enigma of existence / Yet, we admire this insignificance / O shameful, pathethic."

The disc mixes alot of black & goth metal, though the unfortunate last song shows future artists that goth/black metal do not mix very well with techno. But, we must allow for experiments with artists; i just always skip the track since it's the last.

my favorites by far on this disc musically are tracks 3 and 4, "A Thousand Rivers" and "Mistress Tears". The female vocals on "A Thousand Rivers" have had me mesmorized since the first day i heard this disc, and her voice in that song is the main reason i still pick up the disc today.

"Mistress Tears" is a sound in black metal i'd never heard before, because it shows how black metal can be soothing yet technical and heavy as well. the keyboards/synth in this song are the main musical instrument alongside the drums, and it is the synth that gives this song the melody that is so often lacking in black metal. The song "Carven" as well shows this.

Just as a note, the 6th track, "Spire," is a somber short accoustic guitar song, with the female singer singing in Norwegian (i assume). She shows off her non-operatic voice that i love in "A Thousand Rivers." It's too bad it is only 2 minutes long, because the Norwegian lyrics expand the elements the singer uses in her voice.

According to bandmember Ole, their later releases began a more directed vision of the band, and the members seem much more intent on working together. "Autumn Leaves" has some inconsistencies within it, however, the lyrics are by far at their best for the band, with apathy and gothic themes running thick in all the verses. This is the final disc for female singer Keltziva. 5 stars!! one of the best mergers of gothic and black metal i've heard so far...

3 out of 5 stars Okay..........2004-04-03

Dismal Euphony did nothing new with this. Who'd ever thought of making music about being a psychopath before? That's only been done a million times over. Anyway, I heard "Days of Sodom" on one of Nuclear Blast's Beauty in Darkness compilations and thought it was terrible, but then heard the title track on Death is Just The Beginning V, and it caught my attention, particularly because of the female vocals which are not flat like most bands. That's where the good ends. First clue that it's going to be a drag is in the liner notes; generally, anything produced by Waldemar Sorychta (including Lacuna Coil) has a tendency to be boring and uninspired, aimed at a mainstream audience, and more concerned with image and being 'big, bad, and satanic' than with actually making good music. The black-vocals are awful; it sounds like he's coughing into a microphone with the reverb maxed out. The guitar style sounds like Draconian's, or to be more elaborate, a pathetic failed attempt to duplicate the Swedish melodic death metal sound. The music is dominated by the keyboards and the drumming is totally out of place. Buy this if you need a break from your death/black metal collection, but there are definitely far superior bands/albums out there.

4 out of 5 stars Kinda different from their last album, but still good........2000-06-21

I'm not really into this whole metal scene. i coulnt' tell the difference between death, doom or power metal. I like old punk but this band caught my attension. Tho it is different from their last album, the female vocals is what makes me wanna come back. no other band has that pure voice of depression. tho the lyrics could be better, I still think its worth a listen. the synth doesn't really come thru on this album, they have more emphisis on guitar. better than any other band out there, I will say that.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful dual vocal goth/doom.......2000-04-07

I don't understand what the first guy is saying. If you like power metal you probably won't like this cd. If you are more into gothic or doom you'll love it! Haunting female vocals and tortured male vocals make this a dark masterpiece. If you are a fan of older Gathering, My Dying Bride, Theatre of Tragedy, Lacuna Coil, etc. this cd is for you! Also I would really like to recommend the band Beseech if you like any of these bands I've mentioned thus far. They are wonderful! Please buy this cd if you come across it and keep the underground alive!

3 out of 5 stars goth meets black.......2000-02-17

just as the name suggests, dismal euphony hailing from up north and inspired by balck metal sorroundings, paint a bleak musical portrait on "All Little Devils". they are a blend of pop, goth, and traditional metal

1 out of 5 stars This sucks........2000-01-09

When i bought this album i thought it would be up the alley of death metal because it was on a death metal compilation but I was way wrong. The guitars are too quiet and sound like synths. The music isnt agressive or heavy. The vocals sound a bit blacky and have some female backups. I would only recommend this to a powermetal fan but death fans STAY AWAY!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent melodic black metal.......2000-12-07

In my opinion, this is their best album, I also find with a lot of bands I like the first 1 or 2 albums most. These guys are really in a class of their own, and compete well with the likes of ebony tears, Dimmu borgir, and Cradle of Filth. The Norwegian lyrics really adds to the mood as well. Worth every cent. The actual recording quality is soft, and could be better.

    2 out of 5 stars Almost wonderful..........1999-05-18

This band really has what it takes to perform beautiful and gloomy music, but the machine-gun speed-metal drumming that they insist on inserting into every song ruins the whole thing.

5 out of 5 stars This is the only metal I like........2000-06-21

Now, me, as a mostly punk and ska fan, would fend off any metal that would come my way, but someone made me download Carven. my god. I didn't know it could sound this good. the choir synth and the woman vocals make it golden. the only one that can come close is Cradle of Filth, but they don't have enough of that one girl singing. but they have great instrumentals.

all in all, this album rocked. the begining intrumental sounds perfect, and the 5 minute song that follows is great. the next song is even better. The only song I will skip over is that last one. too much industrial and it sounded horrible, but since it is the last track, its ok.

4 out of 5 stars Melodic Doom Metal with some B.M. touches.......1998-12-24

I really enjoy listenig to this album, It has very good stuff.I shall say this is a coolatmosferic music which I enjoy very much.Very nice keyboards and grim vocals, also there it is a pretty girl who sings with a majestic voice giving to this music some gothic touches. Also guitars, bass and drums gives this music an agressive impression of Black Metal joined with keyboards.the only thing that I dont like from this album is the last song "Splendid Horror" it sounds like out of place for this album,it is a combination of techno and Industrial music which makes me feel really sick.So I rather prefer to skip it.Anyway this is a really good and I recomend it to buy it.

          Playing Time - 45:34
SONGS - 1. Le Chat Noir, 2. Valentine Waltz, 3. At The Pelican, 4. Time To Go, 5. Star-Crossed, 6. Five 'til Four, 7. Indigone, 8. Me For You, 9. All Aboard, 10. Salta, 11. Euphony, 12. Down On Parker Street

The Gypsy jazz music of Django and Stephane was originally conceived with guitars and fiddle, but who says that their inspiration can't live on with the mandolin in the forefront? The mandolin, after all, is known for its joyful, happy sound. Being a mandohead myself, I was enraptured by the The Surrealistics' debut album from start to finish. This combo is primarily built around the adroit picking of Jerry Miller and songwriting talent of Jackie Roy (who also plays some mandolin on a couple of cuts). Miller and Roy have had a partnership for many years.

Besides mandolin, Miller also plays mandocello, 6 and 12 string guitars, and accordion. Roy also offers some percussion. The rest of the group includes Rory MacLeod (upright bass) , Mike D'Albergaria (drums, percussion), and Todne Texeira who does a fine job singing a couple of numbers ("Me For You" and "At the Pelican"). She also adds some percussion to the mix. All tracks on this CD are impressive and memorable originals written by Roy and Miller. One of the title cuts, "Euphony" is a triple-time composition that allows the guitar to glide across the dance floor with its accordion partner. All of their songs make for a very compelling set epitomized by dynamism, excitement, and emotional impact for the listener. What a treat!

National Public Radio recognized the appeal of this CD. Three cuts from this project ("Time to Go," "Salta," and "Indigone") have been featured on NPR's All Things Considered. I wish that liner notes would've told us more about the band, the musicians, and their take on this music. A little research explains why Jerry Miller has been called a musician's musician who makes you sit up and take immediate notice.

In bands since age eleven, Miller is an eclectic musician who's capable of adroitly playing rockabilly to jazz, country to blues, western swing to bluegrass. You might recognize his name on several recordings from such nationally-renowned labels as Rounder, Flying Fish, and High Tone Records. He's also played with the Providence Mandolin Orchestra, and Jerry has recorded with Magic Dick and J. Geils' Bluestime, The Spurs, Jack Smith, Dave Alvin and Sonny Burgess, The Hatfield McCoy Trio, and others. Liner notes should have brought all these items to our attention, as well as tell us more about the rest of The Surrealistics. A band photo would've been a nice addition to their debut album, but I'm told it wasn't included because they often have different lineups in live shows (although Miller, MacLeod and Texeira are regulars). Besides originals, their live shows also include covers from the likes of Duke Ellington, Django Reinhardt, and Billie Holiday. Liner note comments aside, the music speaks for itself and should win this group a legion of New England fans who enjoy acoustic jazz spotlighting the mandolin and guitar.

I sense that Jerry Miller still hasn't achieved his full potential, however. With the right promotion, support, and luck, Jerry's name could become as well known as David Grisman's among acoustic jazz aficionados. I'll now have to include him, along with Don Stiernberg, John Reischman, Jeff Midkiff, and Tony Williamson, among my favorite mandolin players at present. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, Oregon)
