5 out of 5 stars good rock and roll.......2007-07-11

My parents had Rock and Roll Alternative in their record collection for years, and today I finally listened to it.

"Sky High" has a great fast-paced chorus with wonderful guitar work. Judging from a few of the hit songs that occasionally receive radio play even to this day, I didn't know the band focused on writing some exciting guitar solos. The jam at the end of this track is great. This style of songwriting pleasantly caught me by surprise. The next two tracks also have really good guitar playing. It's surprising to me that it's not so much the "rhythm section" that's catching my attention- it's more their brief but melodic guitar solos.

"Georgia Rhythm" is a great country-sounding song with a nice chorus. Everybody knows "So In To You" with its groovy rhythm and spooky vocal melody. The song feels a bit out of place compared to the rest of the album, I admit. "Outside Woman Blues" is mainly interesting for the electric blues riff that pops out between the vocal melody and the excellent guitar playing at the end of the song.

"Everybody Gotta Go" is the only other song on the record that has a really good rhythm (remember, since the band is called Atlanta "Rhythm" Section, I'm searching for neat rhythms!) "Neon Nights" is a beautiful Poco-sounding number. Turning the song into a soft jam after the halfway point was an interesting move. Really good song off a really good album. The guitar playing is fantastic the whole way through. What a shame the band isn't remembered as much today compared to Poco or the Allman Brothers Band. Buy this album today.

This is a GREAT disc. I had the R and R Alternative on vinyl years ago and must worn it out at least 5 times. Great stuff.
Thanks for the memories and music!!!!

5 out of 5 stars At last!.......2005-08-02

I have been waiting since the compact disk was created back in the early 80's. The quailty is great and so is the packaging. I have Dog Days/Red Tape on order and expect the same quality. Now all we need is Underdog and The Boys from Doraville to be combined by Gott to complete the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Remastered Sound; Nice Package.......2005-04-29

Good job by GottDiscs on the rerelease of these classic albums. Please give the same red-carpet treatment to the rest of the bands catalogue. As far as the tracks, if your reading this review, you're well aware of the southern rock meets steely dan fusion of Atlanta Rhythm Section. Enjoy because lead vocalist Ronnie Hammond called it quits a couple of years back and their new touring vocalist just can't recapture the magic.

5 out of 5 stars The best Southern Rock band ever.......2007-03-05

These two albums from ARS prove that they were the best of the Southern Rock bands of the Seventies. It is a shame that they never got the recognition they so truly deserve.

5 out of 5 stars Serious guitar picken from one of Southern Rocks best.......2006-11-19

This two album CD features outstanding material from one of Southern Rocks best bands. Atlanta Rythm Section was a great band because of their line up of highly sought after and very accomplished studio musicians. Lead singer Ronnie Hammond delivers his signiture high quality vocals on these well written tunes and he has one of the best pure voices from the south. Lets face it though. Why do most peaople enjoy Southern Rock? Its the guitars baby and thats where these guys shine. The guitar duo of Barry Baily and J.R. Cobb are not easily beat by any band. Every song on these offerings is full of the serious "Southern Picken" guitar that made this Rock genre famous. These albums should be in the collection of any fan of Rock guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Red Tape Rocks.......2006-08-21

An excellant reissue! Tons of great songs. The Atlanta Rhythm Section was at their peak with Red Tape. You can't go wrong with this 2 album CD.

5 out of 5 stars atlanta rocks out.......2006-03-09

One of their best. Will not be disappointed for sure. Ronnie's voice is sultry and smooth. I like that they have combined two awesome cd's into one pleasing cd. This cd is a must for any fan. What i liked about it, was that all of the songs had a different feel to it. It had fast, get you moving songs but then it had sensual, soft melodies as well. I love it!

4 out of 5 stars outstanding twofer.......2005-10-26

If the ABB was the band of the new south and it's hopes and dreams and Skynyrd was Bubba's band, the Atlanta Rhythm Section was the thinking mans Southern band. Albums full of smart tunes, an eye for detail and killer musicianship, these guys have been the most underrated southern band since their first days.

These two albums were pivotal in the bands development. Dog Days reflected the south they lived, in the musical forms they loved and the bands joy at making music. Songs such as the title tune, Boogie Smoogie Cuban Crisis and Crazy are just blinders and All Night Rain has been one of my favorite rainy night romance songs for 30 years.

Red tape opens with Jukin' which interpolates Bob Wills San Antonio Rose into the solo. Mixed Emotions musically points toward the success of the next record's So Into You, Free Spirit examines relationships in context of social change and Another Man's Woman just ought to be illegal its so good.

These CD's have been unavailable for a long time so get them before they go away again.

5 out of 5 stars Dickey Betts And GREAT Southern.......2007-01-01

This remastered CD combines the two albums Dickey Betts released in 1977 and 1978, during the Allman Brothers Band's first split, with his own band, Great Southern (note the emphasis on "Great" in the title of this review). These albums show that, contrary to what a lot of critics said at the time, Betts was still at the top of his game on these albums, which, despite a few areas that drag a bit, are a great example to show that Betts was just as important to the Allmans' success as Gregg, Duane, and Berry Oakley. Betts' advocacy of sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist gives "You Can Have Her (I Don't Want Her)" the feel of a diss against a woman who insists on a romantic vacation in Bali, and makes DICKEY BETTS & GREAT SOUTHERN/ATLANTA'S BURNING DOWN an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

On an album filled with a conventional spread of crunkadelic beats and yelled out choruses so popular in the dirty south, it's unexpected that the heart of the Ying Yang Twins new album would be the downtempo salaciousness at the center: "Wait," "Pull My Hair," and "Bedroom Boom." Guaranteed to either titillate or offend (or perhaps, both), the songs find the Ying Yang Twins pioneering a whole new sub-genre, what Mike Banner has (jokingly?) called "intimate club." If you prefer your Ying Yang fix outside the sheets though, they have some vigorously upbeat tracks like "Ghetto Classics" (which samples Art of Noise's 1980s new wave hit, "Beat Box") and the infectiously bilingual "Shake" feat. Miami's Pitbull. The album even gets serious with the somber "23 Hr. Lock Down" feat. UGK's Bun B who speaks on his partner's Pimp C's incarceration, as well as the single mama's anthem, "Live Again." -- Oliver Wang

Album Description

Atlanta's Ying Yang Twins follow up their platinum breakthrough TVT Records cd, "Me & My Brother" and its massive hit "Salt Shaker", with the album of their career, "United State Of Atlanta." Kaine and D-Roc's latest smash, "Wait (The Whisper Song)," dominated clubs, radio and TV music video countdowns throughout the spring of 2005. A second single, "Badd" featuring Mike Jones looks just as strong, even as fans can't get enough of the "Wait" remix featuring Lil Scrappy, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot and 106 & Park's Free. No longer just a Dirty South phenomenon, Ying Yang Twins have enlisted the help of guest stars Anthony Hamilton, Pitbull, Maroon 5 (yes that Maroon 5), Bun B, BG, Avant, Jacki-O and r&b singer Teedra Moses to present their most diverse and surprising album yet. Once again, DJ Smurf handles a lot of the production duties, and Lil Jon oversaw a track for his homies as well.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Seen this from a mile away........2006-11-09

The Ying Yang Twins have really been a plague on hip-hop; they opened the doors for the D4L's, Dem Franchize Boyz, and Jibbs' of the world. Sure, there were wack emcees long before the Ying Yang Twins ever came onto the scene, but the entire 'snap' genre basically derived from the Ying Yang Twins; D4L and DFB can argue all they want, but neither created this sub-genre of hip-hop. The Ying Yang Twins did, and that reason alone is enough to condemn them to bargain bin sales.

Now, granted, I'm not part of their targeted audience; I'm a head who's grown up with the likes of the Wu-Tang Clan, Big L, Mic Geronimo, and Jeru the Damaja. However, at the same time, I'm not a certified hater of most mainstream hip-hop; there's a couple dozen commercial acts I can appreciate. Unfortunatey for Kaine, D-Roc, and most of all, myself when listening to this album, the Ying Yang Twins aren't part of that group. But, even the biggerst of Twin haters has to admit this music was made for the clubs, and no where but the clubs; and it was directed strictly at the women who love to shake their *sses. Granted, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, except for the fact that this album is a glorified doorstop outside of clubs.

At times, the Ying Yang Twins do show - believe it or not - growth. Live Again and Long Time(both back to back tracks) show they have their hearts in the right place; they just can't get the rest of their mind, body, nor soul there. Those tracks are two shining moments on the album, if only for the guest appearances from Adam Levine(who sounds at home yet again on a hip-hop release, oddly enough) and the soulful crooner, Anthony Hamilton. They also show that, at the very least, they can think of innovative ways to say the same damn thing, as on "Wait(The Whisper Song)" - the approach they took can be respected, but the lyrics are borderline retarded, even for YYT standards; come on, "beat the ***** up" being whispered nonsensically ten to twelve times in a row? This takes misogony to another level.

"Badd" manages to succeed on Ying Yang standards thanks to a guest appearance from Mike Jones(who nearly sounds average when paired with the Ying Yang Twins; quite a step-up!), and "Shake" is also your typical YYT song, with a guest appearance from Pitbull. To be perfectly honest, this is about your typical Ying Yang Twins album; which isn't a good thing. It's probably the best of their five released albums, but as the rating would imply, that's not neccessarily a good bunch. The few moments of sincerity, and original ideas save this from one star territory, but I still wouldn't recommend this to anyone other than a female wanting to shake what her mama gave her.

3 out of 5 stars Do my ears deceive me?.......2006-10-30

Standout tracks: LIVE AGAIN, GHETTO CLASSICS, 23HR LOCKDOWN, WAIT(creative for a ying yang song), THE WALK, BADD, PUT THAT THANG DOWN, SHAKE, MY BROTHER'S KEEPER etc. Filler: Long time(too churchy), F**k the ying yang twins(worst anti-hater record ever made),Pull my hair(GROSS plus thats not even a beat!), Bedroom Boom(softest f**k song ever made), Hoes and U.S.A. Bottom line: I cant lie to you I was never a fan of the ying yang twins. I always equated them to be hip hop's Beavis and Butthead but D-roc and Kaine stop being Tweedledumb and Tweedledumber for a brief moment and put together an okay effort. Songs like Live Again, Ghetto Classics and 23hr Lockdown have little gems in them which is kind of surprise because they have been playing the role of Pinky and the Brain since they first came in the game. Congratulations Ying Yang you've finally made a decent album. Dont f**k it up!

1 out of 5 stars HAHA! A modern minstrel show indeed..........2006-08-14

Wow so in history class they told me because of its racist themes and such that minstrel shows are long gone but they obviously haven't heard THIS trash.

Sheesh, where do I even begin? You thought Fiddy was bad? How about Chingy? Lil Jon? Nope, they're not nearly as bad as these wastes of flesh. These guys are a disgrace to the black race, Aaron McGruder is totally right (creator of the Boondocks) if Martin Luther King Jr. did somehow get resurrected he would definitely scoff at the state of Black America, perhaps it was a tad exaggerated but it still made an excellent point. Afterall it was Chris rock that said, "There are black people and there's n***ers!" Then everyone in the audience laughed their *sses off because it's true. Unfortunately these guys fall in the latter group.

Don't give me that rubbish on how it's just the music, no way folks, this goes far beyond the music itself. This is a reflection of the sad state our society is in. Ok people you want to talk about the actual MUSIC? We shall then, but these cliched annoying 'beats' lack so much substance that I'm just wasting text space talking about the 'music'. The lyrics? They bring new meaning to the word STUPID.

So there you have it, this logic pretty much applies to all their cds and anyone else like them (the aforementioned rap degenerates) they really take the cake for Retards of the Decade when we talk about "I Love the '00s" in 10 years. By the way check out the Boondocks, it's a great comic-turned-cartoon, it's very fresh and unique.

Ok, booty rap was good in the 90's, when it was offensive and raunchy like, 2 live crew, Disco Rick and The Dogs, Poison clan etc.....But this is just wack weak lyrics, corny typical krunk beats that start all sounding the same....And is it just me are these guys as rappers, just horrible there voices all raspy, and annoying and one the guy's from the groups always does that annoying shout thing in interviews like hahhhhherrrrrr.....( what is he on crack or something)So if you like radio friendly, pretty boy music then the Ying Yang twins are for you peace....

4 out of 5 stars ARS.......2007-07-05

i DIDN'T REALLY CARE FOR THIS CD AT FIRST BUT AFTER SEVERAL LISTENINGS, IT GREW ON ME. I LIKE THE LIVE STUFF AND THE OLD ARS CLASSICS. SOME OF THE COVERS DON'T APPEAL TO ME, BUT I DO LIKE "CALL ME THE BREEZE," AND THE ZZ TOP SONGS.I THINK THESE YOUNGER PLAYERS ADD A LITTLE LIFE TO THE OLD MUSIC.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-06-05

I agree completely with the previous reviewer. Unfortunately, I ordered prior to that review being posted. This is not Ronnie Hammond and the original ARS...it may as well be a new band performing covers of their tunes. Save your money.

1 out of 5 stars Not the original ARS.......2007-05-21

Being an ARS fan from back in the day, I was interested in seeing how this was---sadly, I was disappointed. With only one original member on board (Dean Daughtry on keys), this is just basically their biggest songs rehashed (with no improvement over the originals) and some poorly chosen covers. The packaging was done in a way to mimic the ARS "Greatest Hits" album down to the logo and colors (probably to try and get some poor sap to buy it by mistake). While the songs are competently performed, the newer production leaves a lot to be desired---it sounds way too polished and doesn't have the vibe or groove of the originals. It's very sterile sounding. The new singer doesn't have the soulful vocals of Ronnie Hammond---he doesn't even come close. As for the cover choices I mentioned above, everything is pretty much generic sounding due to the production and lack of urgency in the performances. Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back In Town" should be played with some sort of ferocity but it's effectively neutered here by the laid back shuffling approach. The ZZ Top covers "Sharp Dressed Man/Gimme All Your Lovin'" suffer a similar fate. Trotting out a tired remake of BTO's "Takin' Care Of Business" wasn't a good idea either. Nor was the horrid take on "Love Hurts". Only "Call Me The Breeze" fares ok and that shouldn't surprise anyone since it fits their genre and style but at the same time, they screw up another southern rock song, .38 Special's "Hold On Loosely". I hate to bash it being a fan of the band, but this really is horrible effort as far as continuing the ARS legacy and the "Best Of" album cover ripoff ploy only makes it look worse.

I love ARS, I guess this is another hits cd to add to the zillion that are already available! I rate it 5 stars for the band and the song list, a lot of their good ones are here. But, as for the cd itself, we did not need this. It is just another way for a record company to make more money. If the record company really wanted to make more money, they would release ARE YOU READY!!!! Every ARS fan in this country, probably the world, has been waiting for the release of this live album. Most ARS fans already have everything on this new release.

    5 out of 5 stars A Piece of History.......2007-07-23

From tape of a live concert that was simulcast/broadcast over the radio. Yes, it's not studio quality, but they quickly get it dialed in and the boys ROCK!. From the early days when they were just making it big. Don't let the fact that it isn't a study quality recording deter you from getting your hands on this piece of Rock and Roll history. It rocks! In my book, it is a must have for any Hatchet fan...Great memories! The next best thing to being there!

4 out of 5 stars Classic Hatchet in their prime!.......2007-07-19

Molly Hatchet has had many personnel changes over the years, and I'm glad some form of them is still around to carry on the tradition, but this recording features the classic lineup from the late seventies. Great performance! The quality of the sound and mixing is somewhat lacking, but in 1979 recording standards for live concerts weren't at the level nowadays. Still though, it is annoying that for the first song or two you can barely hear Danny Joe and only one (out of three) guitar seems to be audible. Things get better as the CD goes on with the vocal and guitar levels, but the drums pretty much sound distant all the way through. Could have been better, even back then.

But this is, apparently, the only documentation of the original Hatchet live in concert, so if you're a Hatchet fan you still need this CD!! The energy and performance quality of the band overcompensates for the technical flaws of the recording.
