Recorded at the 1979 Havana Jazz Festival, this short and powerful set, with Miles Davis alumni, drummer Tony Williams and guitarist John McLaughlin, and Weather Report bassist Jaco Pastorius, was one for the ages. The previously unreleased selections, one through five, are explosive, but mis-miked live tracks. Williams' "Drum Improvisation" segues into McLaughlin's fuzz-toned "Dark Prince," which does not swing in a silent way. Pastorious' theme song "Continuum" is scaled down to its essential twilight textures, while the drummer's "Para Oriente" - which later became a stable in V.S.O.P's book, and was recast as "Angel Street" - is rendered here in a funky, pre-grunge mode. The guitarist's "Are You the One, Are You the One?" previews the jam band craze. McLaughlin's concerns may have been a bit extraneous-- the live performance has its flaws, to be certain (Jaco wanders off key briefly on "Dark Prince", "Are You the One, Are You the One?" threatens to fall apart), but there's a rare energy and power to the performance that really can't be underestimated, starting with Williams brief drum solo intro that sets the mood for high tension before welcoming his band mates on a racing "Dark Prince". For me, as a Jaco fan, the highlight is "Continuum", performed with grace as Pastorius and Williams stick true to the studio recording and McLaughlin offers a superb commentary that sounds both new and natural.
The studio material, particularly when presented next to the live takes sounds a bit sterile. "Dark Prince" probably best illustrates this-- live, it has an energy and urgency to it, McLaughlin's guitars sound dirty and fierce, Pastorius and Williams explode full of energy. In the studio, McLaughlin's tone, while still overdriven, cleans up and the rhythm section gets a bit too lockstep.
All of the material has been remastered and sounds fantastic-- the live material in particular is notable, clearly the source tapes were in good shape, this could have been recorded yesterday. The set is augmented by brief liner notes by McLaughlin and an essay discussing the performance and subsequent studio session.
This recording is difficult to rate-- the sentimental part of me wants to give it five stars and an endlessly positive, glowing review, but in all honesty, while this is a great recording and one that I'm ecstatic to have, it's not exactly the sort of jaw-dropping performance you'd hope it'd be. Fans of any of the three artists will want this, but don't expect something that'll shake the world.

So naturally one of my first Amazon purchases was the Transformers soundtrack, which made me fall in love with the music all over again. I love 80s rock, and this soundtrack is a classic showcase of it. Even if you don't recognize the artists (Weird Al is the only one I knew before seeing the movie), these songs will still capture the spirit of the music of that era.
My one complaint (and this is VERY minor) is that the CD case was a little cracked when I received my order. This didn't affect the CD quality, however, and having worked in a bookstore that also sold music, I know how hard it is to avoid cracking the case during shipping. Also, I doubt the CD's going to spend much time in the case anyhow -- if it isn't in my CD player, it's most likely in my portable CD case in my car.

The best Transformers soundtrack out there.......2007-07-15
I first bought the 10-track soundtrack years ago. Even that version, without the four bonus tracks, I would have rated a solid five stars. It was great car driving music and there wasn't a single track that I would skip. If you've ever seen the movie, there isn't a single song or score on here that won't immediately conjure up images in your mind of the scene that it came from.
How much better is it now that it has four new bonus tracks? For one thing, even having said I'd rate the original album with five stars, there was one score that I always felt was missing, the Unicron theme. Now that this release has cleared up that minor oversight, I have to say that this album is nearly flawless.
Nearly flawless because I must admit I do skip over the new remix of the Transformers theme. But that's just personal preference. Besides, show me any other album where I only skip over one song, and I'd still have to rate it far above most other cd's out there.
With the inclusion of the Unicron Medley, Moon Base 2 score, Megatron Must be stopped scores and the original 10-tracks which I've already stated I never skip a track, this is a solid buy for any fan of the original Transformers Movie. In fact, if you dare to call yourself a Transformers fan, than this album deserves to be in your collection.
Irresistable if you are a child of the 80's.......2007-07-12
Being more a fan of metal the tracks 'Instruments of Destruction' by NRG and 'Nothin's Gonna Stand in Our Way' by Spectre General are also stand out and it is hard not to be a fan of Kal Swan's soaring vocals on the Transformers Theme which is surely one of the best vocal tracks this guy has ever laid down.
Woven throughout these pumping rock tracks is the work of Vinnie DiCola, which is also able to transport you to various parts of the movie instantly with his talented compositions. I still get a bit misty eyed when I hear 'The Death Of Optimus Prime'.
Sheerly in terms of its nostalgic value this would have to be my favourite movie soundtrack of all time, without a doubt.

Virginia cool meets Kentucky thunder in a collaboration between genre-bending pianist Bruce Hornsby and multi-instrumental virtuoso Ricky Skaggs that expands the terrain of bluegrass. Highlights include a meditative, minor-key transformation of Hornsby's "Mandolin Rain" (with Skaggs on the title instrument) and a downhome revival of "A Night on the Town," though newer originals such as "The Dreaded Spoon" seem slight in comparison. The traditional "Across the Rocky Mountain" and original instrumental "Stubb" shift the spotlight to Skaggs, though Hornsby's sophisticated chord progressions fit fine within the backing of Skaggs's Kentucky Thunder band. The sheer joy of the players was the first thing I noted about the CD. "Dreaded Spoon" was a great opener that brought back memories of childhood days and having to share ice cream.
I liked both re-makes of Bruce Hornsby tunes. I have 3 additional versions of the song from various Hornsby CD's, but this one's a current favorite. "Night on the Town" takes on more of the city and country parts of the battle, too.
"Crown of Jewels" got stuck on repeat til I completely understood the whole thing. Very well done and one of the better story song I've heard.
"Super Freak" was a hilarious finish. Who'd have thought that song could be covered by bluegrass?

BUT . . . I didn't read the song listing before I bought, and those songs aren't on the CD. I bought the CD so I wouldn't have to watch that TV show to hear the songs. Don't get me wrong the record is a good one, but I wish the producers had put the good songs from the TV show on the CD. I can't think of any reason not to.
One of Ricky Skaggs' Worst!.......2007-06-15
The songs where Skaggs is featured are okay, but I would consider it mediocre work for him. The rest of it I could not even listen to. I had to skip most of the songs after listening to the first 10 to 20 seconds. It is that bad.
Most of the CDs I buy are excellent, and again I am a huge Ricky Skaggs fan. I am floored because I rarely dislike CDs as much as I dislike this one. Plus, I am even more disappointed that it is a Ricky Skaggs album.
I recommend you preview it heavily before purchasing. If you think you will like it, then by all means buy it. I wish that I had previewed it first because I would not have purchased this album based on that.

In a distinct break from their muscular triumph Gladiator, Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott teamed up again to bring Peter Mayle's sunny Provençal romance to the screen, a change of milieu that's spawned an equally warm, often sentimentally tinged soundtrack and score. Using a trio of pop songs by the great Harry Nilsson (including the joyous demo of Nilsson Schmilsson's "Gotta Get Up") as an axis that's as effusive as it is unlikely, this is a collection that romps through Franco-pop nuggets variously contemporary (Makali's elegant "Il Faut du Temps..."), vintage (Charles Trenet's "Je Chante," Jean Sablon's "J'Attendrai," Tino Rossi's "Le Chant du Guardian"), and downright loopy (Richard Anthony's French redux of "Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini"), making room for Patti Page, Josephine Baker, and Delaney & Bonnie along its merry way. To be honest, the first time through the film did not dazzle but, as with most of Ridley Scott's stuff, you simply have to watch it more than once to really SEE it and get to know the character's stories. In this case love stories - Max's love of money and power; DuFlout's love of the land; a town's love of their way of life; a nephew's love for his uncle; a young woman's love for a man she never met; a man's love for a woman and a place.
The scenery is spectacular, the supporting cast is by turn funny, sincere and slimy, and I think Russell Crowe's charater may start off a bit of a phony and that's how he's playing him.
My husband, who is normally, "If this has 'feelings' I'm not watching" really liked the story. Yes, it's a bit predictable, and sometimes that's just what I want. In a world that's so short attention span, Wow I've never seen that before, Gee, that looks almost real- it's nice to find a sweet little love story that shows a place and people we wish we really knew and works out the way we all wish life could.

It is a VERY eclectic mix of music, I like the Harry Nilsson numbers pretty much, and some of the French music is fun. A couple of the final tracks (French songs) seem plodding to me, and the Patti Page number seems very out of place. Maybe if I see the film again, I will gain a new appreciation?

Five albums into Son Volt's career--and a pair into the band's rebirth following leader Jay Farrar's several solo ventures--it's time to bury the encumbering "alt-country" moniker that has dogged Farrar since his days in the genre-setting Uncle Tupelo. While the inexhaustible songwriter relied on guitars to drive 2005's rock-heavy Okemah and the Melody of Riot, Son Volt amends its familiar arrangements on The Search, balancing the instrumentation with piano, organ, and dabbles in a horn section. "Feels like drivin' 'round in a slow hearse," Farrar pleads over repetitive piano and East Indian guitar loops in "Slow Hearse." It's a pensive opener that suggests something is askew, but the horns that kick off "The Picture" literally scream it from the Stax vaults. Farrar dives in and out of genres, tingling the ivories to add subtle alterations to both the gorgeous "Underground Dream" and Imagine-like "Adrenaline and Heresy," turning his band into Gang of Four for the 134-second rocker "Satellite" and singing alongside Shannon McNally on the soulful "Highways and Cigarettes." It's been ntoed that there's a Farrar camp and a Tweedy camp. I never cared much for Tweedy - but you gotta admit, the guy does try to push the envelope and consistently sets what we capitalists call "stretch targets." Not so Jay, who since the brilliance of Trace seems resolved to produce the same lame album over and over again. That his fans find some deep aesthetic purpose therein speaks less of their delusion than how great a record Trace was: certainly someone who threw this thinderbolt can make lightening strike at least once more time. But it's not to be, and will never. Proof? Quick, hum something from Straightaways or Wide String Tremolo. Or Sebastopol. That's right, you can't, can you? Nor would you want to, if you could. Or nor could you, if you wanted: there's nothing hummable.
Alas, it ain't to be. Jay had one good record in him, that was Trace, and we shall never see its like again. I am starting to believe that his "brilliance" in Tupelo was the result of good old capitalism competitoin with Tweedy, who modest though his talent may be, does make excellent use of it. Jay, unmoored from his old Belleville pal, reveals himself as a lazy, pompus slacker, the sort of boring nut you see journaling in independent coffee houses with a copy of some Said or Chomsky trash under his elbow. The brilliance of Trace, in retrospect, is starting to strike me as dervived less from a spark of the divine within Farrar than the principle that if a monkey sits at a typewriter long enough, he'll produce Shakespeare. By some weird change of evolution and chance, it happened early for Farrar.
Two stars because no mmatter how wretched Jay is, at least he's not Ryan Adams.

A Beautiful Progression for Jay Farrar.......2007-05-25
As a lyricist, Farrar was never one to reveal himself recklessly, but I notice a few shifts in his methods here that aid in conveying his expressive side. First, the lyrics are more poetic than usual, which does not necessarily mean that they are opaque. Depending on the song, Farrar's words veer from the oblique to the direct and literal. For example, on "Action," he sings, "Break up the old drug pound story, Tortured soul wears an ego sleeve. Heavy hearts and heavy hitters, Bards disease finds the killing floor." These words might not ever mean anything literal to me, but they conjure up rich imagery, while the melody deepens their impact. Elsewhere, on "Adrenaline and Heresy," Farrar sings "She said I still love you, I don't know if I want to spend the rest of my time with you," which is as direct a statement as can be made about a failing relationship. Farrar sings these words with a striking sense of resignation that resounds long after the song ends. "Highways and Cigarettes" is also full of literal imagery ("Best to clear the mind with a Mexicali radio station. Keep an eye out for the border patrol, checking for drugs and so called aliens." He's still very self-serious, but the wordy phraseology and energized interplay of the new band adds an element of fun that had been lacking on previous Son Volt projects.
These words might not resound on the page, but "The Search" benefits immensely from Farrar's melodic sense, which appears to have grown suddenly, and significantly. He is no longer limited by the ideas on his palette, and all sorts of textures help the listener to retain interest. A horn section spices up the high-energy romp of `The Picture," while tasteful keyboards add flavor throughout. Interestingly, there also seems to be an abundance of backward-looped guitars to add a spooky, otherworldly feel to songs such as "Slow Hearse" and "Phosphate Skin." It may take some patience to realize it for yourself, but "The Search" is a beautifully constructed work and I'm finally able to say with some certainty that Jay Farrar and Son Volt have created a minor masterpiece. Strong diverse outing for Jay & Co........2007-05-01
After listening for myself, I'd have to to call the new direction more of an enhancement than a departure. The traditional elements of a Son Volt record are still here -- great songs and melodies, sorrowful pedal-steel guitar, some inscrutable social commentary lyrics, and a solid dose of Americana.
But this record is somehow more than other SV albums. It has diverse sounds that we haven't heard on SV songs before, like horns and piano, that blend very nicely with their sound. There are rocking tracks, slow burn tracks, and moody introspective tracks. Every song on this record is strong, which is a lot more than I can say for "Okemah". This is an excellent record from start to finish.

Original masterpiece enhanced.......2007-05-16
Master Song, Winter Lady and Stranger Song reinforce the desolate landscape although the melodies are less immediate. Cohen's genius shines brightly on the immortal Sisters Of Mercy, a strange mixture of the spiritual and the sensual that must be one of the most beautiful musical poems in the English language.
This delicate gem is followed by the powerful and evocative So Long Marianne and the understated Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye, both masterpieces of words, melody and arrangement - the female vocals on Goodbye is especially impressive.
Stories of the Street appears as a poem in one of Cohen's 1960s poetry books: Selected Poems 1956-1968 and deals with a visit to Havana during of just after the revolution. Interesting fact: The line "some girls wander by mistake" from Teachers was later used as an album title by the goth band Sisters Of Mercy: Some Girls Wander By Mistake
One Us Cannot Be Wrong addresses the beloved in a series of strange images before moving on to melodic whistling and ending with bitter shouted la la lahs. For those interested in other artists' take on Cohen: Suzanne has been beautifully covered by inter alia Judy Collins Sings Leonard Cohen: Democracy and Geoffrey Oryema: I'm Your Fan, while Sting and the Chieftains' celtic version of Sisters Of Mercy is available on the Tower of Song: The Songs of Leonard Cohen tribute album.
On the I'm Your Fan tribute there are interesting interpretations of Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye by Ian McCulloch, Stories Of The Street by That Petrol Emotion and So Long Marianne by James.
This reissue booklet includes liner notes by Anthony DeCurtis, three black & white photographs of LC and two full-color paintings by the artist. Both extra tracks were originally produced by John Hammond and for reissue by Bruce Dickinson. The second, Blessed Is The Memory, is the more immediately appealing with its lovely organ flourishes.

Alan Parsons' concept album about rise of machines and fall of man still resonates 30 years on.......2007-07-28
Alan Parsons Project was the namesake band of wunderkind British producer/engineer Alan Parsons whom had made a name for himself being a tape operator when The Beatles recorded Sgt Pepper and an engineer when they made Abbey Road and Let it Be and also engineered Pink Floyd's albums Atom Heart Mother (as an assistant engineer) and Dark Side of the Moon. In addition, produced records for The Hollies, Al Stewart and Pilot among others.
The album was the follow-up to the band's debut Tales and Mysteries From Edgar Allen Poe and was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in late 1976/early 1977. The album was a concept album about the rise of the computers and machines and the fall of man (a concept that has proved prophetic in this computer age). The musicians on the album, in addition to Parsons and collaborator/keyboard player Alan Woolfson, is almost all of Pilot (the same band who had a hit two years earlier with "Magic") which were bass player David Paton, guitarist Ian Bairston and drummer Stuart Tosh (whom would step down as Parsons' drummer). Plus orchestrator Andrew Powell and several singers (see below). At the time of this album's release, punk and new wave were becoming the rage in England whilst prog still ruled in the US. Would this album be a classic or lumped a poor man's prog, read on.
we start with the album's opening title cut. The Synthi-A loop segued into a collage of synthesizers and a female soprano singing above it before the band comes in and plays a funky pattern for the rest of the piece with a choir singing in unison with the piece. Next is the album's biggest hit, the disco-ish "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You". This track (featuring Lenny Zatatek on lead vocal) is one Hell of a funky rock track (it predates the disco craze that would hit America like an atom bomb at year's end). Great number. "Some Other Time" is next and is a beautifully well arranged and recorded song. This song makes you feel like you are going into a different time and place! The track features peter Straker and Jaki Whitten on lead vocals (the former on verses and the latter on the choruses). Next is the funky sounding "Breakdown". This is another great song and featured ex-Hollies lead singer Allan Clarke on lead vocals. "Don't Let It Show" ends the first half on a great note. the track is sung passionately by Dave Townsend and is a beautiful song. Female rocker Pat Benatar obviously loved the tune so much that it was featured on her 1979 debut album In the Heat of the Night.
"The Voice" begins the album's second half and features Cockney Rebel frontman Steve Harley on vocals and what a great piece. Next is the second of FOUR instrumentals called "Nucleus" which had more innovative usage of synthesizers. We segue into "Day After Day (The Show Must Go On)" which is another outstanding song featuring Jack Harris on lead vocal and BJ Cole on pedal steel guitar. We segue into "Total Eclipse" which blended synthesizers with choirs for a unique track. "Genesis Chapter. 1 Verse: 32." ends the album. This instrumental which combines band, orchestra and choir to end the album on a majestic note.
I Robot peaked at #9 on the Billboard album charts and sold over a million copies Stateside therefore going Platinum in the process.
Thirty years later, the album is now re-issued with FIVE BONUS TRACKS. The first is a demo of the album's title cut called "Boules". then early demos and rough mixes of "Breakdown", "I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You" and "Day After Day". We end with "The Naked Robot" which was a medley of rough mixes that made up the album.
I Robot may be 30 now but the music still sounds fresh as it did in 1977.

For an album that dealt with the fall of the human race, "I Robot" is a surprisingly human affair. The slow beat disco of "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You" and the dance floor paranoia of "The Voice" are anything but mechanical. The ballads of loss, "Don't Let It Show" and "Day After Day (The Show Must Go On)" could be about any typical heartbreak. Even Pat Benatar could spot the drama inherent to "Don't Let It Show," including it on her debut.
It wasn't just the drama and the sci-fi that made "I Robot" so interesting. It was the musicianship. Not as pretentious as ELP and bringing the acrobatics of Yes down to bite size nuggets, Parsons had no difficulty in constructing pop that was progressive, meticulously produced and built up like the studio architect that he is. The Alan Parsons Project recording an album in the period of the seventies this pristine when disco's big boom was steamrollering everything in its path was a pretty bold statement then. Because of Parsons' attention to detail overriding any urge to make music of the moment, "I Robot" still holds up almost 30 years later.

Who knew that pianist/composer Bruce Hornsby, the popsmith of the hit "The Way it Is" and the bluegrass collaborator with Ricky Skaggs, was a jazz sleeper agent since his college days? On this 11-track recording, Hornsby's "Bill Evans-meets-the-hymnbook" pianism is buoyed by Christian McBride's brotherly-loving bass lines and Jack DeJohnette's Big Easy/Windy City drumming. The leader easily digs deep into the Negroidal rhythmic gravity we call swing. Check out the light-speed lyricism he lays down on the previously unrecorded Ornette Coleman number "Questions and Answers," the drum 'n' bass rendition of Coltrane's "Giant Steps," and the Meters-motored take on Miles Davis's "Solar." Keith Jarrett's ballad "Death and a Flower" is played with reverence and restraint, and the downbeats on Thelonious Monk's "Straight, No Chaser" and Bud Powell's "Celia" and "Un Poco Loco" don't do injustice to their bebop roots. Hornsby keeps it rhythmically real, and he's given us a true sound of surprise. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Huge disappointment, at least for me........2007-06-10
I found out about this release about a month before its release and counted down the days. The idea seemed so ingenious. (I absolutely love the cover, too.) I guess I got it with the wrong expectations. I was thinking it would be like the wonderful Motown Remixed album, but what I got was very different. All of the mixes sound the same to me. They are very long, drawn-out and repetitive house remixes with Simone's vocals buried or hidden somewhere in the mix after about two minutes of anti-climactic beats. It's quite sad because this seems more of a showcase of the mixers than the voice of Simone. Not right. The only song I enjoyed on here was the remix of "Ain't Got No - I Got Life."
Also, there is no booklet. All the other Legacy releases had great booklets with interviews, biographies, or memories from friends and family. I was quite disappointed that there wasn't one present here. The CD is housed in a nice digipak and great artwork, though.
So, down to the point: if you like house music, then this is probably for you. If you're thinking something different when you hear 'remix' and your main focus is on the artist, then this probably isn't. I'll stick to the good ol' originals, thank you.

Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away."
