With the Roots signing to Def Jam, their soon-to-be-old label Geffen has taken advantage by releasing a two volume anthology of the Roots' best songs from this perioid (1994 - 2004). Unlike other greatest hits compilations by artists who can't justify the hubris, the Roots catalog runs ocean deep and these two albums are able to pull from off-the-beaten-path album cuts ("Double Trouble"), rare remixes (Black Thought's "Distortion to Static" mix), live recordings ("It's Comin"), plus the occasional mega-hit ("You Got Me"). Even for hardcore Roots fans, they might yet be surprised by a few of the inclusions here, especially "Good Music," a song off The Roots' very first album, Organix, released independently before they signed to Geffen. Between the two volumes, #1 is far and away superior in terms of song selection. Volume 2 isn't nearly as strong but it has some interesting tidbits, including a live medley of "The Seed/Melting Pot/Web" from BBC's Radio One. --Oliver Wang

Album Description

Luckily, for those whose familiarity with the Philadelphia crew doesn't extend beyond watching them play with Jay-Z for his unforgettable Unplugged album or Eminem at the 2003 Grammys, Home Grown! The Beginners Guide To Understanding The Roots Volume One and Two, will provide the sonic DNA for the illustrious group. The comprehensive collections showcase everything from popular hits like the soulful "What They Do," to unreleased heat like "Quicksand Millennium" and "You Got Me," featuring Jill Scott (the Grammy winner featured Erykah Badu), to hard-to-find remixes of "Don't Say Nuthin'" to live performances like "Sacrifice (Live On BBC's Radio One's Worldwide Show with Giles Peterson)." The 29-song opus features Beanie Sigel (who made his major label debut appearance on "Adrenaline"), Eve, Jill Scott, Common, Roy Ayers, Raphael Saadiq, Dice Raw, Jaguar Wright, D'Angelo, and Mos Def, and is undeniable evidence of the influence they've had on the musical landscape over the course of their incredible career.

Of course, as evidenced by album titles like Phrenology and The Tipping Point, The Roots have always taken a very cerebral approach to making music. ?uestlove's musings on each song in the liner notes shows just how much thought the group puts into their creative process. Each volume has a 20-page insert that is filled with behind-the-scene insights that offer amazing glimpses into the group's experiences. Gems like their unbelievable tale of having to go through 11 different singers before finding someone to sing on "Break You Off" or dealing with the controversy surrounding Eve and Jill Scott on "You Got Me," makes this as worthwhile a read as a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to The Roots......................2006-12-30

Nuff Said. Go Cop it! Also do yourself a favor and get that Game Theory while you're at it!

5 out of 5 stars The TRUTH.......2006-08-17

The Roots represent, that unrefined and pure hip hop. This CD is wonderful because it provides you with a sample of their great work. They are the truth, and unfortunately they are not recognized to the level that they should. The blending of live instruments is so pure in their music. I think that often individuals have been so tuned into radio, and commercial music, when they hear the purity of the Roots, they really don't know how to appreciate it. Well this is only a sample of the great work of the Roots. They are truly without a doubt the ultimate. Check this out, and then get more of their CD's to really feel their true talent.

5 out of 5 stars Do you like good music...real music, soul music?.......2006-07-13

This compilation of 'Roots' songs is most definately one of the best albums I own. A must for hip-hop lovers, and anyone else who can appreciate quality, inventiveness, and genuine artistry in their music (regardless of what kind). The album perfectly compliments the groups musical versatility, with skillful wordplay, mezmorizing beats, and creative, singable hooks in towe. Reminds me why I continue to love the group, even as my faith in the genre diminishes... not that they necessarily fit any one genre completely. They're hip-hop in it's purest form , but also a subtle fusing of rap, jazz, soul, and even a bit of rock & Roll... What's not to love?

This is music to chill out to and appreciate for what it's worth... smart, intriguing, genuinely entertaining hip-hop/soul music.

A collection as diverse as the 'Roots' career itself; the album captures everything I love about this brand of hip-hop music. This is definately the best compilation of songs out of the two 'Homegrown' albums. 'Star', 'What they do', 'good music', and 'hypnotic' are classics. One of the few albums out that is absolutely worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars JAZZ HIP HOP!.......2006-03-18

WHAT!! This CD only has 9 reviews!!
that's crazy man...
Vol.1 contains most of their best efforts
and is way better than Vol.2
i think they made a mistake by making a title of this album too long (newbies might get confused and don't even know what it is), but This cd ROCKS!

4 out of 5 stars Roots Rap Right, and Here's the Proof.......2006-03-18

Roots is a group I've loved for a short time, but one I'm absolutely sure I would have loved had I found them earlier. The first album I ever owned of theirs was Tipping Point, and the first time I ever consciously heard their music was on the video game Gran Turismo 4. From that moment, I knew I liked their sound. They rapped the way it's supposed to be done, with a lot of heart and style, and, which is the most important to me, they don't plague their music by singing about drugs or anything of that nature.

This collection is of the Roots best songs since 1994 (or '93, when you consider the independent track). It's great hearing their sound progress through the years, while also realizing that they've stayed completely true to themselves and their spoken-word style backed by jazzy beats. Because this is essentially a greatest hits album, made before Roots switch to a different record producer, most of the songs are good, especially in this volume. My personal favorite songs are "The Lesson" feat. Dice Raw, which is almost a straight rap to a simple bebox beat, "Silent Treatment," mostly for its beat and sounds, and "Act Too," featuring Common.

Still, even being a greatest hits album, Roots just aren't old enough as a group for some of their fans to actually need this album, or the second volume of this. The title is right, because it's a great way to introduce people to the Roots sound and style, but anyone who has been with them for a few years won't find much on these CDs, unless you're a collector. Personally, I loved the chance to catch up on what I missed, and I'd recommend this CD to people who want to find something new with something old.

4 out of 5 stars ..........2006-12-05

Like I've said before, I don't like compilations or greatest hits record but this is actually a good retrospective of The Roots. It has some great remixes, live stuff, and quality songs from past albums. We all know that they are talented musicians and can write a great pop song or a great political thriller and this showcases all of that. The live version of The Seed/The Web is pretty much a masterpiece that needs to be heard by everything. Blackthought and ?uestlove really let loose and it makes for a fun get down.

4 out of 5 stars Left-Overs are Good Too.......2006-04-16

After the first, near-perfect volume of the Roots greatest hits collection, Home Grown! The Beginner's Guide to Understanding the Roots, Vol. 1, I was wondering what could be put on the second volume to achieve the title of greatest hits. Honestly, though, after listening, I'm certain that this isn't really a greatest hits, but a collection of left-overs that weren't great enough to be on vol. 1. Still, though, like Thanksgiving, left-overs can be good too, which is why I gave this collection a solid 4 rating.

Here is a list of tracks and my personal ratings on each:

1. Sacrifice: ..................**
2. No Alibi: ...................****
3. Essaywhuman?!!!!!: ..........***
4. Break Off: ..................*
5. Quicksand Millennium: .......****
6. Pass the Popcorn: ...........***
7. Don't Say Nuthin': ..........***
8. Adrenaline: .................*****
9. The Lesson Pt. 3: ...........****
10. Y'all Know Who: ............****
11. Thought@Work: ..............****
12. BOOM!: .....................****
13. The Seed/Melting Pot/Web: ..***
14. Din Da Da: .................***

As you can see from the above list, Adrenaline is perhaps the stand-out track on this album, but "The Lesson Pt. 3", "No Alibi", and "BOOM!" are also pretty good. But in the end, this depends on personal tastes. What I will say is that if you are a long-standing fan of Roots and have a lot of their albums, very little here is worth it. If you're a newer fan of this excellent group, then this is a great disc. No title was ever truer. This is a good CD for beginners, and a great companion to the first volume of Home Grown!.

5 out of 5 stars A cd for everyone...........2006-02-17

The Roots have put out so much good music that their greatest hits compilation couldn't fit onto one CD!!! Home Grown! The Beginner's Guide to Understanding the Roots Volumes I and II are the perfect introduction to the Roots for people who don't know much about this amazing band. But they're also perfect for the dedicated fans because they have some rare remixes and live recordings. Both Volumes I and II prove why the Roots are the most innovative group in hip-hop. They are one of the few bands who are able to attain commercial success yet maintain their musical integrity. I just bought a copy of both volumes and I would honestly recommend them to anyone, even people who aren't into hip-hop.

5 out of 5 stars Remember The Roots are a band! Duh!.......2005-12-30

I'm not sure who the newbies are posting reviews on this CD, but remember that the title of this CD is "The Beginners Guide to Understanding The Roots". It is not even remotely possible for a newbie Roots fan to 'understand' what is the greatest Hip Hop band ever without a listen to volume II. Whereas volume I is more of a "greatest hits" type CD, volume II is purely for 'schoolin' the newbies. I prefer this volume, because this CD has more material that I don't already have elsewhere. This CD was worth buying just for this version of "Don't Say Nothin", and who could ever have enough versions of "Essaywhuman"? Yes this CD is more of a showcase for the band, but this is a ledgendary band, what is there not to love.

I am a late 30'ish woman, and I love this music as much as students of mine that are 19 and 20. If you don't like stellar instumentation, then the Roots are not necessarily the band for you. As for me, I'll be the lady with the greying Afro dancing with abandon at the next Roots concert, hoping to hear some of these versions.

4 out of 5 stars HOME GROWN! THE BEGGINERS GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING THE ROOTS.......2005-12-12

Who are the roots? If by now you haven't already heard of the Philadelphia bred Hip-Hop "band", the term `Hip-Hop head' means nothing to you. More famously consisting of front-men Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter, lyricist, and Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson, drummer and producer for the group, the Roots have done more than state their presence in the music world. With a well-deserved Grammy under their belt and world tours in their résumé comes HOME GROWN! THE BEGGINERS GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING THE ROOTS. A two-volume, separately packaged release compiled of songs old, new and never before heard come together not to create a "best of" album but more of an icebreaker to their music. The album title, which speaks for itself, is a must have for any roots fan. Whether a diehard since the Organix sessions or newbie following up the release of their most recent The Tipping Point sessions, both volumes give the ultimate Roots experience.
Volume two, a 14 track CD picks up where Volume one leaves off. Cognate to Volume one, it too includes unreleased tracks, remixes and live performances. With songs like the Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane inspired "BOOM!" to remixed versions of "Break You Off" and "Don't Say Nuthin," the album does well at grabbing you by the ears. Liner notes narrating the groups in studio struggles, song inspirations and meanings, also makes as a nice special feature for the record. Summing up your whole musical career isn't an easy task but ?uestlove takes the challenge head on with HOME GROWN! and succeeds.
As early as 1987, live instruments have been the forte of the group going 18 years strong. As a band, they reflect their grooving capabilities on the snare driven segue of "The Seed/ Melting Pot/ Web," where revisits "The Seed" with a more soulful vibe. Rather than the rock version as it appeared on the Phrenology album in 2003, the Seed fits into the array of instrumental arrangements on the full-flavored, musical "Melting Pot," giving the listener a short vacation from the fabricated synthesizers and drums of the cliché rap album. Then at his own cue, Black Thought comes in pushing forward his bravado with "And it weights a ton/ `Riq Gee's Motherf**kers I'm a son of a gun/ Black master of any trade under the son/ Talk sharp like a razorblade under the tongue," putting "Web" into the blend. It gives the album a distinct feeling of being at a live Roots performance.
Adding to the "live" feel of the album is "Essaywhuman?!!!!!." With a disquiet crowd establishing the environmental setting of what would be a club, a younger Black Thought finds himself beat boxing and rapping simultaneously over a jazz song. Tariq Trotter's stage moniker, having some near bursts of laughter and reactions to statements made by audience outbursts keeps the authentic feel to the Roots crew's music.
While "Pass The Popcorn (Revisted)" may feel to old-school for the modern day Hip-Hop fan, "No Alibi" makes you feel like its '96 again. Both eerie and gloomy, think of post War Report Tragedy Khadafi's intellect over a Mobb Deep instrumental to get the gist of the dreary street image it portrays. It also contains one of Black Thoughts more impressive work as a lyricist. "My grains habitual and I should never go against/ The ritual I've been mastering ever since" shows a spoken ethic to be followed by Trotter and the Roots though their career. Keeping to their independent, yet open-minded creative ability is what kept them afloat for so long.
A remake of "Din Da Da" by German musician George Kranz finds ?uestlove fulfilling his desire to make a danceable drum solo. While a lyric enthusiast would rather cut the album short to 13 tracks, leaving "Din Da Da" out of the big picture, it does however follow the formula to the drum and rhythm based endings to most of the Roots albums.
Along with guest appearances by Philly native Beanie Sigel and Dice Raw, HOME GROWN! THE BEGGINERS GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING THE ROOTS is a good start or add to your Roots collection. If you have just unwrapped the cellophane plastic around the jewel case, I advise you to pick up a pair of headphones and prepare yourself to be schooled.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific Early Effort By An Emerging Superstar!.......2004-09-14

While this is not a typical Ronstadt album, nor one recorded when she was really in her prime, it is a very early solo album that shows her potential for cranking out hits as well of those seemingly effortless and sometimes facile interpretations of other people's songs, showing just how original an artist she was. Like the legendary Johnny Rivers, who always seemed to have a magical touch for turning other people's work into brilliant covers and best-selling albums, Ronstadt here does a star turn with other people's songs. She shows here just how versatile and eclectic her approach to some interesting material could be. From a raucous hit song like Buddy Holly's "Break My Mind" to a sweet and soulful interpretation of the classic country tune, "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" or the plaintive "Number And A Name", Linda pulls out all of the stops, and although the album was panned critically, it was also her first album that really showcased her tremendous eclectic abilities.

Her fans knew what they liked, and they sure seemed to like this terrific collection of so many different genres gathered under a single tent. The opening tune, "Baby, You've been On My Mind", is a haunting, powerfully performed song. Then too, the soulful rendition of "Long Way Around" is powerfully interpreted. "Ill Be Your Baby Tonight" and "It's About Time" are sizzling, as is a well-arranged version of "Dolphins". She soars with an interpretation of the traditional "Bet Nobody Ever Hurt So Bad", and a lovely effort at blue-eyed soul with "Give One Heart". My personal favorite here is "We Need A Whole Lot More Of Jesus (And A Lot Less Rock and Roll", with its satirical messages about the dynamics of being human. All in all, this is a terrific album and one that is really a showcase for Linda at her early best. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars An early country-folk-rock classic.......2003-12-24

Linda's recording career has embraced many different styles of music, including her country rock and pop rock music produced by Peter Asher in the seventies and her Great American Songbook albums produced by Nelson Riddle the mid eighties as well as her two traditional folk country Trio albums with Dolly and Emmylou. People who were taken by surprise at the style of the first Trio album would have been less surprised if they had looked at the early recordings of each of the three ladies. This 1969 album was recorded in Nashville in a folk-country-rock style typical of Linda's very early albums.

Silver threads and golden needles has been recorded by Linda Ronstadt at least twice - she re-recorded it for her seventies album, Don't cry now. Wanda Jackson originally recorded this song in the fifties but it was after Skeeter Davis covered it for her debut album that Dusty Springfield discovered it. It then became a top twenty American hit for the Springfields, with Dusty singing. Linda Ronstadt revived the song and also had success with it, though I will always regard the Springfields version as the definitive one.

There are two Bob Dylan covers here - Baby you've been on my mind and I'll be your baby tonight. The only mama that'll walk the line is a gender-adjusted cover of the Waylon Jennings classic, Only daddy that'll walk the line. Break my mind, written by John D Loudermilk, provided George Hamilton IV with a country hit and was covered by many country singers. There are many other excellent, if obscure, songs on this album

If you enjoy the Trio albums, you will probably enjoy this album and Linda's other early albums including Silk purse. If you didn't enjoy the Trio albums, you may be better looking elsewhere for your musical entertainment. If you haven't heard those albums, I recommend that you try one or both of them first.

5 out of 5 stars Lerner & Loewe Songbook.......2006-02-24

If you like Percy Faith's music, you'll like this one. He quit recording and died much too young. But while he lived, he recorded some great music.

5 out of 5 stars Wouldn't it be lovely?.......2005-09-26

This CD represents some of the best of Broadway done in a great pops style. There are five orchestral suites, one each for the following: 'Camelot', 'My Fair Lady', 'Gigi', 'Paint Your Wagon', and 'Bridgadoon'. They are all arranged for orchestra by Robert Russell Bennett, save that for 'Paint Your Wagon', which was arranged by Cincinnati Pops Orchestra director Erich Kunzel.

The works of Lerner and Loewe were a mainstay of Broadway for decades in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but it was during the late 50s and early 60s that their true glory days took hold. The presidential term of John F. Kennedy gained the nickname 'Camelot' in part because of the influence of the Lerner and Loewe production going on at the start. The songs contained in these suites are instantly recognisable by many, as the Lerner and Loewe songs have become so well known that many know the songs better than the musicals or the composers from which they come. 'I Could Have Danced All Night' and 'Wouldn't It Be Lovely' come from 'My Fair Lady', 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls' from 'Gigi' - these are but the most of famous of the familiar tunes.

There are a lot of pieces here that the listener will appreciate, both in remembering old pieces or in learning new nuances to the tunes.

This particular disc by Telarc has a feature called 'Spatializer', which gives a three-dimensional quality to the sterophonic sound, enhancing regular players and working well with surround-sound systems, too. The Cincinnati Pops are expert at this kind of music, having produced dozens of CDs of popular music and modern composers of musicals, film music, and pops-oriented major compositions.

This is a fun disc to have.

5 out of 5 stars A Successful Sequel.......2005-08-03

This CD is a follow-up to the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra (1991) from the same team. It is a thoroughly successful sequel: I believe anyone who enjoyed the R&H will enjoy this one as well. If I am very slightly less enthusiastic about this one than the R&H, it's not because of any shortcoming of Kunzel, the Cincinnati Pops, or Telarc, all of whom are at the top of their form. Rather it's because Frederick Loewe, for all his undoubted expertise, is not quite in the same class as a composer with Richard Rodgers. But that's asking a lot, since Rodgers was the American musical theater's leading light. Lerner & Loewe's musicals were second only to R&H's during the golden age of the American musical, and their My Fair Lady is by any standard one of the best musicals ever staged. If Loewe did not create as many unforgettable numbers as Rodgers, he nevertheless wrote many delightful songs and much enjoyable music. This CD features five orchestral suites, ranging in length from 9 to 18 minutes (total playing time 68:06), from Brigadoon (1947), Paint Your Wagon (1951), My Fair Lady (1956), Gigi (film 1958; staged 1973), and Camelot (1960). The arrangements (all but one by Robert Russell Bennett) are expert. The performances are masterly (if perhaps lacking in just a tad of the infectious brio that the same team brought to R&H). And Telarc's robust sound (recorded 1993) would be hard to improve on. Warmly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Listening.......1998-12-05

Some of the nicest and nearly forgotten music (Paint your Wagon & Brigadoon) is nicely compiled here. It will make you want to listen to the full soundtracks again, but for a quick tour of Lerner & Lowe, it is very nice.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre Record from a Mediocre Band........2003-12-17

This is a listenable album, but it didn't win any records, and it didn't deserve to. This is a basic start by Home Grown, the recording quality is poor, which is probably its best atribute (making it sound like an older punk record), and the songs arn't really that catchy. "Surfer Girl" is easily the albums best track, but it sounds too raw and unfinnished, almost as though it was rushed in order to get on the album, this song is, however, brought to justice on the bands second record "Act Your Age." If you are planning to buy a Home Grown record I suggest "King's of Pop," an all together much better record, but be warned the voices of the band's two vocalists become intolerable after a few listens!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD TO ADD TO YOUR COLLECTION.......2003-01-18

That's business is one of the best albums I have. Before I bought this cd, I wanted to get Act Your Age first because I heard it was great. So I went to Sam Goody's and they didn't have it. They had That's Business, so I decided to give this album a try first. I am so glad I did. This is a very talented band. Song after song is a hit. One of the best punk/ska albums you can buy. Get a job, The Hearing Song, She Said, Alternative Girl, and Wanna-Be are great songs to start out the cd. But the stand out song on this cd is Surfer Girl. Its very different from all the others. The music to the song is written very well, including the stuck-in-the-head lyrics. After Surfer Girl, the cd keeps it up with its ska fast paced songs like Ubotherme, and Face In The Crowd. There are absolutely no filler songs on this album. But there are some weak songs that don't do as good as the rest like One Night Stand, Employers Market, and S.F.L.B. This is long album too but not too long to get bored with it. The bonus track at the end of S.F.L.B. is worth listening to. Its all instrumental but very awesome. Well, I guess that's my review. I hope you will consider to buy this cd. You will be very happy you did. Rock on.

3 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2007-01-07

This band is not that good, and I don't know why people rave on and on about this CD. The melodies are spotty at best, and the vocals lack strength and pitch. If you are in to this kind of music, I suggest Allister's "Last Stop Suburbia" which is perhaps the best pop-punk album ever made, or Midtown's "Living Well is the Best Revenge." Home Grown is decent, and I tried so hard to love this album. I found that difficult to do, to be quite honest. There is better stuff out there. BY THE WAY check out a band called "Element 94." They are great and need a break to make it big.

4 out of 5 stars It had to grow on me..........2005-01-15

Having never been a ska-punk fan, I never got the chance to get into Home grown in their earlier years... A friend of mine had burned a whole buncha crap onto a mix CD and was playing it in his car when the song "I Love you, Not" came on. It was super catchy and reminded me alot of Mest's "breakin' down". I went out and got the CD (along with their EP "when it all comes down") and at first I didn't like it. The only other song that truly stuck out was "disaster". After a few more listens though, most of the songs stuck and now its hard to pick a favorite. I'd also like to note that the guitarist in "home grown" is highly above average for the pop-punk genre, giving guitar lovers something along the lines of SUM 41 meets RUFiO. I'd recommend this album to you if you like: Mest, Blink 182, SUM 41, Allister, RUFiO and maybe even A New Found Glory.

4 out of 5 stars nice.......2004-10-30

this is suprisingly really good. i got it after hearing cannot stop the world on the radio. its some really good punk rock! if u like bands like blink 182 and allister then this is for you!!

4 out of 5 stars For Fans of Pop-Punk (Not The Ramones Kind).......2004-05-30

Okay..first off. I went through this whole stage where I thought all of the drive-thru record bands sucked. Then i started listening to this band again. Home Grown might not bring anything new to the pop-punk scene lyrically, but they give Blink-182, Good Charlotte (even though i dislike them), and a New Found Glory a run for their money. The guitars give good riffs, and they sound a lot like Blink-182 riffs in most songs. anyways...the singers don't sound too much like Tom or Mark from Blink-182, but the pattern is the same. In other words, a drummer, and two guitar players who both sing (just like Blink-182). The ditched the ska-punk thing, and went straight pop punk on this cd. If they had more exposure, they could have been as popular as Yellowcard or the Ataris, because Home Grown is better (in my opinion). THe catchiness of Sugarcult, the humor of Blink-182, the singing of allister, and the guitar power of sum 41 all in one. since im not good at those if blah and blah had sex this would be their offspring stuff so...COMPARISONS: Fall Out Boy, Blink-182, Sum-41, Green Day, Catalyst-era NFG, Sugarcult, Unsung Zeroes, Allister, Nerf Herder, GOB. For fans of Fall Out Boy, Allister, and Blink-182.

5 out of 5 stars My adolescence.......2007-05-19

I'm nearly 25...and this album was pretty cool when it came out and I was listening to so-cal punk rock ("real" punk rock). I truthfully think this CD is amazing. I hate drive-thru, and I'm a cynical old man who hates all the music that comes out these days. I think I could only appreciate this having listened to it as a new release in the late 90's. Their songs are incomparable to anyone else, and the harmonies blow my mind. It is so tight and natural. Maybe it is "Power Pop", but it is still good song writing. The later albums went downhill and are pretty bad. If you love perfect complex harmonies than listen to this!

5 out of 5 stars Did you ever notice? .......2007-03-08

I'm not actually writing about how good this CD is, Even though I really enjoy it and it's one of my favorite albums of the 90's I was just wondering if any one else ever noticed about the song "she's anti" It kind of reminds me of Columbine. If you listen to the lyrics it's oddly similar to what happened at the school, The song talks about the girl being anti social, hating everyone, pessimistic and cynical, She came to school and went ballistic, there all dead? With a rifle in hand? I'm not saying that the song is the reason why they did what they did, but even the date that is given in the song, April 28th is close to the actual date. April 20th 1999. Maybe they heard the song and used it as motivation? I don't know I'm just saying. Take a listen for your self and see!

4 out of 5 stars Most of you have no idea how good this album really is..........2005-06-20

...even the kids who gave it 5 stars.

What most of you don't know is that this band (circa '98-'99) was about the best thing going. They were signed to a brand new major label, one of the best live acts around (they're a shell of their former selves...), and had two great albums under their belt. One of those albums, "Act Your Age" pretty much defined the whole scene transition from ska/punk that was going on at the time--the album was perfect. It featured complex and intelligent guitar and bass arrangements, a drummer at the top of his game, and vocal melodies and harmonies that countless bands in the genre have tried to imitate since. The album itself is a journey, best listened to all the way through. Every song takes on a life of it's own and compliments the others well...

Then the floor fell out from under them--their label went bankrupt and their drummer was diagnosed with a brain tumor effectively breaking up the band for a number of years. They've never been the same upon their return. I almost cried when they signed to Drive-Thru and started writing the crap commonly put out on that label. If you think they're a good live band now (they're not...), you should have seen them years ago.

And to whomever shot down their lead vocals and proceded to cite autotuned crap like Blink666 and MXPX, you're either ignorant or just have a stick up your posterior. Also, as much as I like the Suicide Machines, you *have* heard their self-titled album, right? The dude's not a singer...

I saw Homegrown for the last time in early '05, and I won't watch them again--my band could have played their songs better. Last I heard, Adam left the band too, so they're done...oh well

I don't give too many albums 5 stars, this would be a 4.5...

2 out of 5 stars OKay, but NOT punk.......2004-12-26

lets get one thing straight. these guys are NOT punk (punk = bad religion, nofx, rancid, black flag). they're not even pop-punk (pop-punk = ramones, buzzcocks, green day). this brand of childish, hook-laden garbage is called POWER-POP. its pop with guitars. so all you little n*sync fans who think you're making the "big crossover" into punk rock need to think again. yeah, okay, some of the songs are catchy, but is that all that makes music good??????

5 out of 5 stars this is the punk cd you need!!!!!!.......2003-12-31

this cd rocks, and kicks ass. this is a great band that is basically an indey band. a kickass indey band. when i first herd this band it kinda sounded like greend day, but once the song kept going i couldnt stop listening. the first song i herd was grow up and it kicks ass. this bands tight and you need to get this cd if you like green day, blink 182,nirvana, and bands like that you need to get this cd!!!!by the way what cd is hangin out in?

5 out of 5 stars "Slim Slo Slider" alone makes it worth it!.......2004-07-27

I have loved the 'Slim Slo Slider' album since I first encountered a used copy of it in 1982. (At that time, I was 18 years old.) The 'Slim Slo Slider' album is, in my opinion, Johnny Rivers' best album. It, much like Sinatra's 'In the Wee Small Hours', is not just an album; it's a mood piece. Yes, mentioning Johnny Rivers and Frank Sinatra in the same sentence is a bit of a leap, but this album ('Slim Slo Slider') is the exception to all the rules regarding Johnny Rivers.

5 out of 5 stars Into the Mystic..........2001-04-06

These two albums together make such an excellent pair, that this actually could very well be a double album. Each disc compliments the other so much that, having owned this for several months, I can't imagine owning one without the other. If (like me) you prefer J.R.'s later work like Rewind and Realization, this is a must-have. It includes some of his most beautiful covers ever - superbly sung & produced - as well as his own classic "Permanent Change." My favorites are "Brass Buttons", "Apple Tree" (both by G. Parsons), "Enemies & Friends", "Wrote a Song for Everyone" (GREAT version), "Muddy River", "Moving to the Country" and, of course, "Into the Mystic". Sure, it's nice to have the original artists' versions - but I miss the days when an incredible, soulful singer like J.R. could work his magic and make these terrific songs his own. Even if you are not a big J.R. fan (for example, I don't own any of his earlier records - but may some day), but love "singer/songwriter" songs - here you'll find songs by Jackson Browne, James Taylor, John Fogerty, Van Morrison, Gram Parsons & more. I wish J.R. had made twenty more albums like these two!

Depending on your point of view, four saxophones playing in a chamber-music setting may seem as ill-fated as four bulls in a china shop. The instrument's predilection for strong-willed individuality, oddly enough, is what makes the quartet format, especially in the hands of the NCS4, so powerful. Every player seems capable at any moment of venturing into the foreground--this in contrast with the strict social hierarchy of the string quartet. Home Grown collects original commissions that coordinate the various saxophones in a wide range of settings. Composers David Ott and Thomas Massella offer pastorals that benefit from the instrument's earthy associations. Ken Valitsky compacts what he calls sax clichés (guttural blurts, taut riffs, genre phrases) into a fun spree. Saturday Night Live's house band has long perpetrated a kind of black-tie blues, so it's no surprise that Lenny Pickett, an SNL music director, provides some of the album's most soulful work. Like Ott's pastiche, Pickett's design is compositionally rudimentary, at least relative to the others' aspirations. But it's also the one that makes you want to set your CD player on repeat. This is highly recommended music; listeners will delight in the revelatory airspace created when four horns collide. --Marc Weidenbaum

5 out of 5 stars This CD ROCKS!.......2001-04-06

This CD simply represents *the* state of the art in saxophone playing. Any saxophonist or fan of the saxophone needs to hear this CD. The ensemble playing and blend is tighter than most string quartets, the timbral spectrum varied and colorful and the tunes rendered with terrific musicianship. I am a saxophonist and composer, and this group gets it. They are hot!

This is one of the best albums I have heard in a while. Limbeck (aka Garage Monkies from the apple comercial) are an awesome up and coming band and i anticipate great stuff from them. But it is Home Grown that dominates this album. Their playing and vocals are amazing. They have come a long way from that's business. I can't wait for their next lp.

5 out of 5 stars Limbeck Rules!.......2000-04-07

First of all, I have been a Home Grown fan for a couple of years now. However, I got this album because of Limbeck. They are an up-and-coming band that is soon to hit success. Although only having six songs, each band makes this a great ep. This is a good first album for Utility Records--good job Adam. I look forward to Limbeck's first full length and Home Grown's upcoming album, as well. Both of these bands rock!
