4 out of 5 stars For the "Burning Shark" idiot.......2006-09-12

The music here is classic Great White, as only Great White has the balls (or the talent) to cover the majority of these songs, without a straggling member of Led Zep present. Nothing more to say; here, the music does all the talking.

As for the cover art, it is a classic play on Led Zeppelin I, where the Hindenburg is seen striking the aerial tower, igniting into a ball of flame. Since this is Great White covering Led Zeppelin, it is a clear mixture of a great white shark, combusting the same as the lead zeppelin aircraft did... idiot!

Study your history, and your classic albums.

4 out of 5 stars Disc one is Amazing !.......2006-05-05

Disc one gets the led out in a big way even though such classics as Black Dog, The Ocean, Misty Mountain Hop and Rock N' Roll are missing. Even though those tracks aren't here, I still can't get enough of this Zeppelin tribute from a great band in their own right. Basically, disc one is amazing.

Disc two, I could have gone forever and never missed hearing this. The song selection is odd and the band doesn't seem to be putting their own signature on any of these tracks. That approach is fine if you're covering Led Zeppelin. But, when you are determined to bring to light an entire batch of material that isn't as strong as what is found on disc one, then it really disappoints.

5 out of 5 stars Not A Bad Collection.......2006-04-08

In a previous review of this album, a reviewer claimed the album cover features a burning shark. That is bollocks. I have the cd, and the cover isn't anything special. Just a shark in the water.
The music is great. They did a good tribute to Zeppelin as well as many other bands on the second disc. This is essentially two Great White releases packaged together. The first being Great White's live tribute to Zeppelin titled "Great Zeppelin". The second disc is their covers cd called "Recover".
For the price, you can't beat it.

1 out of 5 stars Good songs, bad package........2005-03-28

Great White is a great rock n'roll band and their covers of Zep and others ARE worth checking out, but these tracks are available on two seperate discs already making this release needless, as well as in bad taste with the cover (which Amazon says is not an available image), and questionable. The band, and those who lost their lives in Rhode Island deserve better. There are other questionable releases the band is fighting against, so check out their official website before purchasing anything.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth it for a great bunch of covers.......2005-01-07

There is no orignial tracks from Great White on this 2 disc set, but it is probably the best covers cd around. The First disc is a live concert of all Led Zeppeiln material recorded in 1996. The sound is incredable! Some tracks are better than the the mighty Zep themselves. The conclussion is much of the same with cuts that cover The Cult, Bob Dylan, Badfinger, Bad Company, and much more. I love this collection because of the variety of the music and it is all done by one great band(no pun)

5 out of 5 stars doubledosed again !.......2007-07-14

I can't believe I found this on CD ! I had the vinyl so many years ago and it was Jorma at his best. Particularly Can't get Satisfied and especially North Wind Rise. I ordered today and can't wait to get it and shake the house with the best Tuna recording ever.

5 out of 5 stars Best stuff on Earth or elsewhere .......2005-07-14

Many good memories are invoked anytime I put this one on. I can specifically remember one in particular where a lit match head landed on the record as it was playing, ruining "funky #7", causing a mad dash to the record store for a replacement. I had found some booted variations of this record on CD, but they were basically renamed cd's burned off the vinyl version without proper artwork, and most important, authorization which denied proper royalty to the Group.
This is (imho) the best representation of the group at the time and it is pretty well engineered. The "edsel" version I now have is unfortunately missing "Killing time in the Crystal City" which I assume was to get the cd time under 80 mins.
I am so fond of this record, that when the time comes, its going in the same box I'm going in. Really.

5 out of 5 stars What a great LIVE record!.......2005-01-02

I first saw Jorma and Jack perform back in 1986 with Max Creek (a great live New England band) at this outdoor show somewhere in southern Connecticut. Apparently, it was the comeback tour for Hot Tuna. I guess the deal was that they had taken some time off for a few years to do other things. It was obvious that a lot of people in atttendance hadn't seen Jorma and Jack together in quite a while. They played for about three hours and the musical energy they created for us that afternoon was comparable to this Double Dose album, an album which I was lucky enough to be introduced to in the car on the way home from the show. And even though we had just seen 3 hours of Tuna live, nobody complained. In fact, on the way back we hit traffic and ended up listening to it twice all the way through. It's just one of those kind of records where it comes naturally to want to just hit, "PLAY", again.

Tracks that stand out in particular, for me anyway, are:
2. Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burnin'
5. I Wish You Would
6. Genesis
10. Serpent of Dreams

The highlight is Serpent of Dreams. The tempo is a little slower than other versions I have heard, but that only helps make the song more pwerful. Jorma's vocals are perfect and the sounds they are making in the background are very psychedelic and it truely is an example of why these guys really were the pioneers of acid rock...because they are damn good at what they do!!! The only thing that sucks about this record is its availability. They really need to re-release this record at an affordable price. ~ PM

4 out of 5 stars Can someone please explain.......2004-11-25

I have a copy of this double LP and it looks to be longer than 80 minutes long. I'm wondering how they got this all on one CD? Amazon lists all the original LP tracks. Maybe trimming the leadin and leadout applause might be enough but... Curious minds want to know.

For what it's worth, this is a nice live Hot Tuna album.

5 out of 5 stars spectacular Album.......2003-05-01

I use to listen to double dose about 25 years ago. We didn't have cd's then , only casettes. My version was tapesd off a midnight special on a popular Chicago radio station. My car was almost stolen, :but was interupted" they did get all my casettes. I have been looking ever sence. Would really enjoy burning one, and listening to it as I'm driving. Look forward to the opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars As usual - a perfect album by this Tennessee Titan .......2006-10-23

Tela, the Memphis rapper, who started at Suava House, but moved to Houston powerhouse Rap-A-Lot delivers another perfect album. To me, it's a perfect follow-up to his previous 5 star album "The World Ain't Enough". I don't have enough praises for Tela, as a rapper and as a producer and artist overall. The man is so talented and I am so upset he's dissappeared ever since "Double Dose" (which was released more than 4 years ago!). On "Double Dose" Tela takes off where he left on "The World...". His production is flawless, as he produces most of the tracks with his longtime partner... Jazze Pha produces a couple of tight tracks as well (and also appears to drop an unforgettable chorus on "Coco"). Tela's music is so rich, mellodic and musical... Tela has just his own sound! It's different than any other album on Rap-A-Lot and different than any other artist, period. Tela is original, how many rappers do THAT, huh? I mean, damn, even the intro and the outro are so tight!! you wish they were longer!

Tela's rapping is also untouchable. He's got such a deep and warm voice, with just the right portion of Southern drawl to it. Plus, he's got charisma, something most of the new rappers lack. Lyrically, Tela is mostly about being a playa, pimpin' and just livin' the good life. And of course representin' the M-Town... I gotta agree with something one of the other reviewers here said - Tela has a unique talent of making COMPLETE songs - that means from the beat, to the rapping up to the very catchy chorus (just listen to "Incredible" which is without in Tela's top 5 songs list - this song, if it was marked probably, could make the top 10 billboard list in a second!). Most of the songs are laid-back, because this is the type of guy, Tela is. You get a few more up-tempo songs that could even get some play at the strip clubs and a few harder edged songs... Guests include Eightball, MJG, Devin, Bun B, Gangsta Boo, Yo Gotti, Jazze Pha and a few others. Overall, it's another perfect album, and I really hope that "Double Dose", Tela's 4th album is NOT his last. I really hope J Prince and Tela have another album in mind, because we really need this... Guest appearences are not enough, T, we need another album we can bump !

5 out of 5 stars Tela is the "incredible"guy.......2005-08-10

There are no time-wasters on here--even the intro & outro sound amazing! The pimptastic tracks go down reaaal smooth.
The most familiar songs are "incredible," "coco," "tennessee titans," and "pimp b*tch."
Unlike many rappers today, Tela sounds great alone (ex: "double dose," my favorite track); Devin the Dude, Jazzy Pha, and the other guests are hot fudge on Tela's ice cream.
        Buy this CD; it's good.

        Album Description

"Coffee, Chocolate & Men", the latest album by Platinum Plus Universal recording artist Jen Rathbun features 11 new original compositions. Jen offers works that have been compared to Rosemary Clooney and Billie Holiday, and that contain a unique blend of humor, sultriness, and double-entendre. "Coffee, Chocolate & Men" was co-produced Robert Metzgar, a three-time winner of Cashbox's Producer of the Year, and Tony Migliore, another award winning producer. Migliore and Metzgar filled the studio with top Nashville talent, including a contingent of the Nashville Symphony, to play on the predominantly jazz-flavored album.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly produced tawdry jazz album.......2005-01-13

It's no wonder that Jen Rathbun has been nominated the Female Vocalist of the Year in the State of Texas for the Texas Music Awards. The houston jazz star has the greatest jazz album ever and Billboard's review "brilliantly produced tawdry jazz album" is exactly right. This album is worth whatever you have to pay for it. It's absolutely sensational.

5 out of 5 stars Hot and Rich.......2004-12-18

I've been following Jen Rathbun for a couple years now. In her new CD, "Coffee, Chocolate & Men", she brings her music to a whole new level. Her first CD, "Beautiful Day", was a sampler of her wide ranging writing styles. Chocolate is focused, delivering a rich dose of her smoky-room cabaret style. These are fun songs, hangin-with-the-girls songs, songs that make you raise your eyebrows and grin knowingly. From the dusky ballads, "Seven Digits Away", and "I'm So Lonely", to the bawdy "Yard Man" (makes me blush), to the right-on "Monday Blues"...she reveals too-true moments, and gives us singable melodies with unforgettable lyrics. My favorite cut is "Cool Cat", full of crooning innocence and inuendo. Her voice is warm and dense, thick as buttered rum, and the backing jazzy instrumentals are crisp and bright. This lively CD would be perfect music for a 30th birthday bash, a bachelorette party, or a let-your-hair-down dinner with friends after a long week. Honey, it's a hottie!

Check out his composition Rebecca on Leo Kottke's Chewing Pine cd) and he has found an excellent collaborator in Cyro Baptista. I've played this cd for a number of friends and the response has always been terrific. If you're looking for a gift for someone (or yourself) you would be doing yourself a favor by checking this out.

        5 out of 5 stars Mbira Magic.......2004-11-27

This is indeed a magic CD. It reminds me of the sound of a waterfall - cascading notes, soothing and calming with subtle variations. The more you listen, the deeper you get drawn in. Great for meditation, massage and making love.

        5 out of 5 stars Deceptively simple.......2004-11-06

The mbira, also known as a "thumb piano," is a traditional African instrument of great timbral and tonal subtlety. In the hands of a master musician, it becomes mysterious resonant and deliciously evocative. With a timbre somewhere between a marimba, balophone, kora, and harp, it's not the kind of instrument you can beat into submission; instead, it yields up its musical treasures only with a kind of deeply humble approach, one that fully takes into account its odd character and limited dynamic range: you've got to coddle it to make it reveal its glories. That said, if properly played and recorded (as it is here), it surrenders a richness of overtones and timbral mysteries found in no other instrument.

The vibe here's a kind of "folk minimalism:" repetitive (with endless variation), somewhat static-sounding (especially initially), dynamically one-dimensional. The timbral uniformity undergoes some relief with the addition of world-class percussionist Cyro Baptist gracing three numbers, something I would've like to have experienced on the entire disc, not only on account of the welcome variety he provides, but also because he's regarded as perhaps the reigning world-jazz percussionist on the scene today and brings an incredibly imagination array of percussive moves to any endeavor with which he's associated.

But you know what? I'm not complaining. There's a kind of trade-off going on here: the purity and radical simplicity of the solo mbira numbers vs. the richer and more varied tapestry of the percussion-added cuts. Still, it would be intriguing to hear an entire disc of Crandell/Baptista offerings. What about it, Tzadik? Think you could handle that? Let's hope so.

4 out of 5 stars For the Deadhead.......2006-02-04

Tracks include Watching the river flow, scarlet begonias, stir it up, Konocking on heavens door, maybellene and others. Its Keith and Donna Godchuax recorded a little before Keith's death. No 20 minute jams here but there is time for the musicians to stretch out and Donna Jean is a fine vocalist. This is a somewhat obscure part of the Dead catalog but it is very interesting and it probably won't be duplicating any of your other GD music.
