As one might expect from an album called End of Amnesia, a dateless aura exists within, as if it could have been recorded 100 years ago or 100 years from now. Portland, Oregon, resident Matt Ward's often captivating sophomore CD fuses a bucolic folk sound with a postmodern lo-fi sensibility. Ward's intriguing tunes are sung in hushed tones, and his fragile voice has an offbeat beauty even when he whispers. The atmosphere here is stark and mostly acoustic (save for "Flaming Heart," an odd little rock rave-up that appears midway, like an intermission), and an eerie calm pervades the album. Ward's music features deft, poised guitar playing, vivid lyrical imagery, and melodies that burrow into your brain--as if they'd been there all along. --Marc Greilsamer

Beautiful.......2007-03-22

I have tried to think of something to accurately convey how I feel about this album, but I've been backspacing for about 5 minutes now, so I'll just say that I own about 4,200 songs and this album, titled End of Amnesia, is the most beautiful collection of songs in my library.

The breathy voice, the vivid imagery, the light acoustic guitar, the occasional slide guitar, the subtle backing band that seems to fade in and out throughout, the immaculately arranged songs, the breezy, sometimes haunting, sometimes euphoric, never urgent feel of the entire album...

This is just a great collection of songs by one of the most talented songwriters/guitar players around these days. Also recommend the rest of M. Ward's discography (Post War, Transistor Radio, Transfiguration of Vincent, Duet For Guiter #2), Jim Noir's Tower of Love, Spoon's Girls Can Tell, and The Mountain Goats' Tallahassee.

#2 Ward Highway: Genius.......2005-04-02

If you are reading this then it is fair to presume you are out on the Ward highway and unless I miss my guess, traveling from Transistor Radio and Transfiguration back to the End of Amnesia. You have been hearing some fabulous sounds and incredible tunes on your way here and let me be the first to tell you that more of the same awaits you here in Amnesia-ville. In fact, this may be the best of his four solo albums and that in itself is a strong statement considering the one that preceded this one (Duet) and the two that followed (Transitor and Transfiguration). Ward is a musical genius, no doubt, and this collection of songs from a wholeistic perspective may be the clearest manifestation of that genius. His tune "half moon" simply has to be heard to be believed. "Carolina" is gorgeous and "seashell tale" defies description. But if I were standing in the front row of a Ward concert and calling for him to play a tune, it would be "bad dreams" (the opening chords to this song have to be heard to be believed: so subtle, so deep, so resonant). I think it is the best song Ward has ever written and immediately after he played it, I would yell up at him to play "fool says"(Transfiguration) and then "from debbie's stairs" (Duet) and then "here comes the sun again" (Transistor) and then "seashell tale" (Amnesia) and then "outta my head" (Transfiguration) and then "lullaby + exile" (Transistor). But if Ward leaned down to me and said that he would play only one of his four albums for us tonight from front to back, I would pick End of Amnesia. Everything Ward touches shines with a depth and beauty that has been missing from modern music for far too long but like I said, End of Amnesia would be my pick. It might well be the best complete album ever keyed and picked and sung by a man whose best musical work (if this is even conceivable) may well lie ahead of him. He is 31 years old; he is an incredible musical genius; and he has a talent and a musical muse that seems to be just getting untracked.

"End Of Amnesia" makes you feel like you're sitting on the back porch of some log cabin in the mountains, and after hearing this cd, I wouldn't mind feeling that way all the time. This is a collection of serene, melodic, acoustic tunes, which blends country, folk, bluegrass, and modern abstract rock all together. This is a cd that makes itself appear sparse on the surface, but is actually maticulously composed. It is sophisticated, but not inaccessible or overly abstract. The albums' energy peaks with "flaming heart", a catchy, upbeat country song featuring a rare instance of electric guitar. Mellowness peaks on "O'Brien"(part 1 of track 15), where he is just about whispering the lyrics. I find this cd to be extremely enjoyable and relaxing, and I highly reccomend it for anyone looking for some good chill out music.

Beautiful.......2002-11-16

End of Amnesia is a modern folk rock classic. From the first line sung in the album to the very last, Ward's mellow raspy voice conveys a immense sense of feeling and emotion which perfectly compliments his acoustic guitar playing. While the songs on this album are typically quite mellow and relaxed, it is extemely capable of holding a listener's attention for an infinite amount of plays without getting boring. There are also tracks on the album which are very upbeat and more fast paced, so it never lacks in energy.

While there seems to be an emphasis in modern music to convey a complication and strength in musical arrangement, Ward finds a point that combines perfect simpicity with stunning technicality in each of his songs. Not only is his song writing wonderful, but his entirely captivating stage presense as well. Not many modern artists can hold an entire audience's attention through a ten+ minute guitar solo. Ward's energy and humbleness on stage is unmatched by any other artist. If you have the opportunity to see Matt Ward live, or pick up one of his albums, you will not be disappointed.

disappointing compared to the live show.......2002-10-15

I saw ward open for bright eyes and was amazed by his charisma, technical virtuosity, and fascinating revival of the blues. in a way, his crazy look and vocals reminded me of isaac brock, though musically you could say they have little in common. however, when i listened to the cd on the way home i got vaguely interesting acoustic and folk noodling, like a much better mason jennings. it's still a pretty good album but i would recommend seeing him live instead. the man clearly has some soul.

"Well, it really tears me up when I hear a hurtin' song," sings Moe Bandy, "and I'm someone who likes a good cold beer." And there you have it: Moe Bandy in a nutshell. That line, from the quintessential Bandy song "Soft Lights and Hard Country Music," sums up his aesthetic quite nicely, but what it doesn't tell you is that Bandy seemed to be the only country singer who had that aesthetic in the 1970s and early 1980s. The Mississippi-born Bandy was raised in Texas and on the music of fellow Meridian native Jimmie Rodgers, honky-tonk master Hank Williams, and eventually his idol George Jones--hear how Bandy pronounces "woman" in "I Just Started Hatin' Cheatin' Songs Today" for proof of his reverence for Possum. Despite the country-pop trends of the day, he saw no reason to ever stray far from the hardcore honky-tonk that's as natural in Texas as cowboy hats. You might say he presaged the neotraditionalism of the late 1980s, except that he really wasn't "reviving" anything. He was merely playing the music he'd always loved, and since all 20 of the singles on this collection hit the Top 25, it appears that fans still loved hard country too, no matter what the popular style was at the time. Honky Tonk is an understatement.......2007-02-13

When I was a kid, my dad went through a serious Moe Bandy phase. That's basically my only connection. But I kept a havin' a yearnin' for certain songs (Amnesia, Last Bottle and Nobody make love at Home Anymore). Be aware that this music is almost a CHARICATURE of the "Honky Tonk" sound. It's about as classic for that certain era as it gets. You could play it for hipster, urban friends to make fun of Country & Western but I don't; I stand by it--and I am not what you'd call from-country-roots. All said and done, Mr. Bandy sounds like he means it, even though no one could have actually experiened that much cheatin'.

Just got this cd from Amazon. Every track is pure country. Lots of steel and fiddles, the way country music is surposed to be. It's good to hear those old drinkin and cheatin songs..Thanks Moe for a great cd.

Probably the best honky tonk album ever.......2006-10-12

This is an incredible honky tonk CD; this is what country music was and should be. It's all about drinking, cheating, rodeo, hurting, and all the other quintessential elements of real country. There's no pop, pseudo-country here. The first two songs--"I Just Started Hating Cheatin' Songs Today" and "Honky Tonk Amnesia"--are in the pantheon of best country songs ever.

Living in Australia, I had never heard of this artist before, but thanks to Amazon, I was able to access and sample this cd. I was very impressed with the style, choice of songs , and overall feeling of the cd. Great way to just sit back and enjoy some nice country music as it was intended to be played. If the 1970's would have embraced the sounds of Moe Bandy more than those of Barbara Mandrell, Crystal Gayle, and Kenny Rogers, it would have been a whole different ballgame. The music on this album will remind you of what true country music is all about; I do believe the choice of the album title is appropriate as this is one of those albums that mix well with beer or bourbon (or both). Moe Bandy was definately a stylist who was obviously influenced by George Jones and Hank Williams, but you soon realize that Moe had a style all of his own. It's often overlooked that Moe also had a few notable duets including with Becky Hobbs and Judy Bailey, but his duet with the fabulous Janie Fricke in "It's a Cheatin Situation" will raise the hairs on the back of your neck. I dont think there's a bad song on the album, which is saying something for a 20 track disc. Moe did seem to fizzle out in the 80's after the intro of the neo-traditionalists, which is ironic considering he carried the torch of traditional country in the 70's. I am glad to see that his duets with Joe Stampley were not included here, although I'm sure many will disagree with me. While his duets with Joe were entertaining and deserved all of the air play they recieved, they were not in the same league as the songs included on this album. A+

Sean Callery wrote incredibly beautiful pieces of music to underline the Tony/Michelle relationship. These are not on the cd. Although there are wonderful pieces of music(my personal favourite is the truly moving "The bomb detonates") I wish it were more complete.

A review from a soundtrack composer groupie.......2006-11-15

As I am writing this review, I have already ordered the "24:Season 4 & 5" soundtrack. (The follow-up to this CD) I was so excited to find out that Sean Callery was producing a second CD for fans of "24".

As the title of this review indicates, I own several soundtracks from various TV series and movies. Out of all of them, I believe this is my favorite. It is no wonder that Sean has won two Emmy's for his work on "24".

One of the great things about this CD is being able to hear the show's theme in it's entirety. The other most noteable tracks for me are "Jack's Revenge At The Docks" and "The Bomb Detonates"....I guess because of the scenes that they accompanied. My other favorites...."Palmer's Theme" (reminds me of "Fanfare For A Common Man") and "Coliseum Finale" (when I listen to this one, I can actually see Mrs. Palmer running through the LA Coliseum....as fast as the beat will take her.)

If you are a fan or "24" or a fan of great music, you NEED to get this CD!!

This score is one of the most emotional and well composed scores there is. The upbeat track really get you excited, while the softer, quieter track really get you into the emotion of the show. This CD is a great addition to any collection. You will not be sorry for buying this CD!

By the time Amnesia was recorded in 1988, it seemed Richard Thompson had recovered from the break-up of his marriage to long-time musical partner Linda Thompson--or maybe, as the title implies, he simply buried and forgot the pain. Rather than creating an album of love-gone-bad tunes (as on 1983's lovely Hand of Kindness), Thompson broke out of the gloom and wrote songs with fresh energy and strength. An aggressive voice takes over where once a weaker man may have spoken ("Turning of the Tide," "Waltzing's for Dreamers"). Moving from personal relationships to the state of the world, Thompson targets TV evangelism and American imperialism with caustic wit and guitars that sting. Sadly this terrific album is out of print .......2006-02-19

The late 80's and 90's were extremely kind to Richard Thompson fans. He was quite prolific between studio and live releases producing a wide variety and array of fascinating music. A lot of it is on this terrific album. Although flawed, it's also got some of the best material Thompson wrote during the 90's. "Turning of the Tide", "Reckless Kind", "Jerusalem on the Jukebox", " I Still Dream" and "Can't Win" are all classics. I personally like "Don't Tempt Me" and "Yankee, Go Home" but they lack the timeless quality of the other tracks. "Pharaoh" is an acquired taste. I personally like it but feel it goes on a bit too long.

The production of Mitchell Froom compliments the material well. I've heard lots of complaints about Froom screwing up Thompson's albums. Folks, those touches wouldn't have been on there without RT's approval. It works pure and simple. Now there are other touches on other albums that Froom (and Thompson)use that undermine the material but here it perfectly compliments the album much like "Rumor and Sigh" (one of Thompson's finest and underrated albums). I caught Thompson on the tour for this album at the Warfield in San Francisco and some of the best material here is highlighted on the RT live album "More Guitar" available at RT's website. It's a terrific album (sadly I don't know where the material was recorded and it isn't mentioned in the credits. At least one performance sounds like it was drawn from the San Francisco appearence but I can't be 100% sure as my memory could be playing tricks on me). It's a five star live album.

Strangely enough Capitol release the 5.1 Dolby Digital/DTS disc of "Rumor and Sigh" a couple of years back (appealing to the audiophile audience). I keep hoping they'll update and remaster his back catalog with bonus tracks (on a separate disc or with appropriate silence after the last track on the album as Thompson hates when bonus tracks are just "there"). Perhaps we'll see something come out in the UK or overseas and we can order it.

If you purchase this album and "Rumor and Sigh" you won't be disappointed. In fact if you purchase all of RT's output during the 90's (where he seemed to catch his second wind)you can't go wrong. Also recommended "Mock Tudor" and the boxed set "Watching the Dark" to dig further into his body of work.

Apt title for a long out of print and almost forgotten album.......2004-09-27

Sadly, most of Richard Thompson's amazing catalogue lies smouldering in the out of print bin. Since the 1970s he has consistently put out great material, but a mass audience never wafted up from the general populace. When Capitol signed Thompson they probably saw mass appeal, hits, and the next big critical and commercial success. In the mid late 1980s music rags announced Capitol's huge marketing campaign designed to haul Thompson from obscurity to stardom. Almost instantaneoulsy, Thompson's face appeared plastered in record stores, in music magazines, and the occasional television appearance. "Amnesia" belongs to this era, and Capitol pulled out plenty, if not all, of the stops to market it. Somehow the album stalled despite the strength of its contents. The 1991 follow-up "Rumor and Sigh" found Capitol getting what it wanted out of Thompson, but some ten years later the label dropped him. Thompson survives on Indie labels, but hopefully some label will put Thompson's considerable Capitol output back into print (calling Rhino!! Rhino!! Are you there!?!?!).

"Amnesia" is in no way Thompson's best album, but it contains some amazing material. "Turning of the Tide" should have been a hit. No good reason exists for its obscurity on the radio waves in 1988. The song holds up as a pop bulwark even today. "Waltzing's For Dreamers" could arguably be placed alongside some of Thompson's best material. A mellow bittersweet song about lost love, one of Thompson's perennial subjects, it almost sounds out of place amongst the pop rock songs that fill most of the album. Thompson waxes controversial on "Yankee, Go Home", including such lines as "Overpaid, oversexed and over here/Get smart, gringo, disappear/The Hun's at the gates of Rome/Yankee Go Home". Subtle it is not. One wonders if Capitol and Thompson exchanged blows over its inclusion on "Amnesia". "Don't Tempt Me" is a humorous (or not so humorous depending on one's point of view) take on bar room machismo. "I Still Dream" and "Reckless Kind" are Thompson staples burgeoning with bad bitter lost love. "Gypsy Love Songs", though a bit overlong, contains some great guitar work.

"Amnesia" doesn't deserve to wallow in never never land. Only two cuts made it onto Capitol's "Action Packed: Best of the Capitol Years" compression of five albums. Fans and the curious must resort to used bins or online auctions to get a copy. This album deserves better.

MOMENTS OF BRILLIANCE.......2002-06-11

Although it has its moments, this not Thompson's best work by far. That's because it's musically uneven, with uninspiring arrangements as on Gypsy Love Songs, Can't Win and some really silly numbers like the cliched Yankee, Go Home. Turning Of The Tide is fast with an appealing melody and a theme that mirrors Tom Waits' Saving All My Love For You, whilst Reckless Kind and I Still Dream are slow ballads about lost love, and Jerusalem On The Jukebox kicks ... at a driving pace while delivering social comment. The major saving grace is of course Waltzing's For Dreamers, a sparkling piece of poetry set to a sad, lilting melody that evokes the same feel as another of his classics, How Will I Ever Be Simple Again, with its melancholy lyrics:
"Oh play me a blue song and fade down the light
I'm sad as a proud man can be sad tonight
Just let me dream on, oh just let me sway
While the sweet violins and the saxophones play
And Miss, you don't know me, but can't we pretend
That we care for each other, till the band reach the end."
So Amnesia is worth getting, if only for this one song. But his album Rumor and Sigh is more varied and a much more rewarding listening experience.

why can't I add half-stars?.......2000-06-02

because this is an amazing three-and-a-half star album, but i'mnot sure it's a four-star. there are a few cuts- "Yankee, GoHome" (which i love musically and find humorous as hell but which has potential to alienate more than a few listeners), "Jerusalem on the Jukebox", which i still get stuck in my head occasionally but which might not have the same stamina four years down the road, "Pharaoh" which is just midtempo drudgery, for the most part... but, having said that, "Turning of the Tide" and "Waltzing's" are worth the price of this disc threefold, especially "Waltzing's". i defy you to find me a finer lost love song written in the last forty years. perhaps "nightswimming". but "waltzing's" in the same closet.

Incapable of anything except artistic excellence.......2000-05-29

If Richard Thompson releases a mediocre album, I want someone to tell me immediately because I believe that he's incapable of anything except artistic excellence. Amnesia includes some of Thompson's most moving and breathtaking compositions to date. `Gypsy Love Songs' is a rocker to end any argument that Thompson is among the finest composers and guitarist ever. It's angry, brooding, haunting and thunderous. Mickey Curry bludgeons the drum kit (on par with the great Jim Keltner) like a pile driver, Thompson's guitar solos are sterling, and Jerry Scheff's bass lines could shake granite. Either Jim Keltner or Mickey Curry on drums, and Tony Levin on base lay down a bulletproof rhythm on the other rockers (Jerusalem On The Jukebox, Don't Tempt Me), while Thompson interjects improvising and mesmerizing guitar lines. `Yankee Go Home' is an uplifting cheerful ride except for Thompson's lyrics - yes, he's angry.

The antithesis to Thompson's electric rockers and customarily cynical lyrics is the light and acoustic solo `Waltzing's For Dreamers.' Here, pessimism is replaced by longing and loneliness. Christine Collister is the only woman on Amnesia: her backup vocal harmonies amplify rather than contradict Thompson's gruff voice and irate delivery. For Richard and Linda followers, `I Still Dream' is especially poignant. Although the magic of `Shoot Out The Lights' may never happen, Amnesia contains more than a fare share of enchantment.

Technical Note: Not mentioned on the accompanying written material, I suspect this is a DDD release. Check the cymbals and top-hat on `I Still Dream' and `Can't Win.'

This Album is simply fantastic. The vocals the musicianship is nothing short of awesome. Why this album has recieved so little publicity is beyond me. I suggest purchasing this album along with Street Fairie. Both great albums. I only hope Cree decides to record again.

Folk Grunge Rock w/ Great Solos.......2003-02-23

What if Ani DiFranco had come out of the Seattle Grunge scene & then fallen in with some rockers? You'd have something like Womb Amnesia. Moments of gentle peek their flowering heads abouve a boulder strewn slope of rockin' licks. It's a combination that works well.

My biggest complaint is that the instrumental sounds seem to dominate the vocal solos. But that instrumental work is nothing to complain about. Traditional rock, grunge, and even a bit of funk--this is a blend you don't want to miss.

This CD is a lot of people screaming there heads off. THIS CD IS NOT WHAT YOU THINK IT IS. Maybe its just me but I buy music to hear music not to hear people screaming. But at times there is few songs I like so I gave the song 1 star.
