5 out of 5 stars Great total album.......2006-11-04

I probably can think of about 30 albums that are great from start to finish in my 35 or so years seriously listening to music. This is one of them.

I bought it for In The Meantime, but found that I really enjoyed playing the entire album more than just listening to that song on replay. The songs tell a story and fit together so well.

Candyman

1 out of 5 stars Don't judge an album by its single........2006-03-04

In the Meantime was a big hit and I thought it was a great song. I bought this album for that song. I listened to it several times but each time the rest of the music got worse and worse. This is the only album I have ever given away. It is awful. DO NOT BUY THIS RECORD. If you like the single then buy the single. This band should not be encouraged.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-12-29

I bought this albumn about 9 years ago, because a sample (the telephone) was used on a TV ad (unsurprisingly for a telco - One-2-One I think). Obviously "In the meantime" was brilliant, and the rest of the albumn was pretty good.

About a week ago, though, I picked it up again, and it hasn't been off the CD player since. Fantastic. It always played glam rock at its own game, and Royston has those wonderful take-the-piss-out-of-Axl-Rose vocals; but now I can see - the band did The Darkness, before the Darkness had seen the light of day. The tunes are fun, and skillfully played. The lyrics ingenious in their playfullness. And Shipwrecked is a ballad to break your heart, then trample all over the scattered remains with the hobnail boots of feedback enhanced rock guitar.

This is brilliant; go and buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Off the beaten path.......2004-05-06

I first learned about Spacehog through the news. The singer, Royston Langdon (aka "The Luckiest Man Alive") married Liv "Arwen Evenstar" Tyler in 2001. This made headlines at the time, as it was incontrovertible proof that even the homeliest of guys can hit the jackpot every now and then.

Three things strike me about this album:

First, is it quirky? Yep. Off the beaten path? Definitely. But underneath this somewhat bizarre album is a collection of strong and well crafted songs written by people who are quite talented songsmiths.

Secondly, they're very well produced. They have a great sound, and whoever the producer is deserves an award. The band's strengths are played up. The mix is just right. The sound they get out of their instruments is simply phenomenal. It's perfect for their style of music.

Thirdly, the singer, Royston Langdon, has a strangly intriguing voice. I'm not sure it would carry well in a more traditional band, but it's perfect for what Spacehog does.

3 out of 5 stars Pigs in spaaaaaaace........2004-04-04

Though I'm sure they're mostly thought of as a one-hit-wonder, man what a hit. "In The Meantime" has got to be one of the coolest songs of the mid-90's. After that the songs aren't as good, but still similar, and mostly interesting. Actually I think "Cruel To Be Kind" was a minor hit as well. Their sound is definitely retro-glam, like a "David Bowie" or "Elton John" influenced 90's alt-rock band. By now this disc is probably in every used store across the country, and well worth the price you could get it for. After a few listens, you'll realize "Space Is The Place".

Armed with dark thumps and immaculate production, Liverpool's Dave Ralph continues his winning streak on the 2-cd set Resident Alien. While he's been spinning records since the mid-`70s, Ralph didn't really hit the "international superstar DJ" stage until 1999's Tranceport, Volume 2. Since then, he's been everywhere, including a high profile set at Berlin's Love Parade festival. As his star has risen, his use of popular dance tracks like Madagascar has dropped off in favor of exposing lesser-known and occasionally self-produced tracks to the masses. Alien's best moments come courtesy of Ralph's own work (with an assist from producer Alex Whalen), like the lovely "Full Contact" and "Pangs of Ambition." By looking deeper and exploring new sounds, Ralph's ability to keep a dance floor in motion shows no signs of fading after all these years. --Matthew Cooke

1 out of 5 stars waste of money.......2006-03-28

buying this cd was a total waste of money. most tracks sound the same. there is no variety of sound in the tracks. i hate this cd. this cd gets quite repetative and annoying. i reccomend saving your money and spending it on something else but this garbage(unless you are a diehard fan or dave ralph).

5 out of 5 stars A hypnotic journey into the mind of Dave Ralph.......2004-03-08

Beautiful and entracing, while eerie and eccentric. Dave Ralph proves to be an expert snake-charmer with his creepy breed of spaced-out "skeletal" trance. The high-pitched melodic synths well known to trance are almost completely absent throughout this mix, leaving the tracks in the control of bassy strings, female vocals and metallic ambience. Sleek and stylish, the disc's unique flavor strays off from the mainstream....although repetitive in many areas, fans who already understand Dave Ralph's style will have no problem slipping away into his world of dissonant low-key trance. The second disc is especially a winner!

5 out of 5 stars Smooth as Silk.......2004-02-23

This CD is, no BS, the smoothest thing since silk. I wouldn't even call it mixing, it sounds like Dave slides right into his next track, his basslines matching perfectly, as well as the beat. I'd slip this CD on and wear it as a shirt if it were any smoother. While not quite as dark as most of the stuff I usually listen to, it's still a very powerful, very well put-together CD, and it will remain a classic in my eyes. Thank you, Dave, for one of the most emotionally moving CD's I own.

5 out of 5 stars Emotionally Overwhelming.......2003-11-29

This whole CD ranks at the top of my list for progressive sounds that can can be found on a store-bought CD. It seems like most DJ's these days reserve their best material for radio sets that are unattainble through standard means. I must give special mention to track 2. Chris Fortier's augmented version of Everyday. One of the most beautiful tracks I've ever heard....it actually had my girlfriend in TEARS!!.....that is power.

3 out of 5 stars good at the most.......2003-08-06

cd 1: 4 maybe even 4.5 stars, nice dark tasty progressive beats; very tight mixing
cd2: step back into early 90s trance with occasional dark beat of late 90s - do not go together -- not listenable at all.
worth buying used for cd1 though.

    4 out of 5 stars A Cohesive Feel Throughout........2000-01-29

Not like anything you hear elsewhere said", Elizabeth Badurina Rambles cultural Arts Magazine and really, that's a great compliment. It's not traditional Irish music, and it's not Celt-inspired rip-off-pop, either. It's somewhere in between, in a niche that hasn't really been explored too often. Brendan is really breaking ground of his own design. Not only does he break ground, he seems to be digging in more than just one place. His work features songs that are inspired and hybridized from things like pub songs and jigs, but also a few that have country influences and rock 'n' roll beats. Normally, in works that feature this much diversity, there's a patchwork quilt feeling to them -- not so with O'Loughlin's offering. It retains a cohesive feel throughout the work, and maintains that quality the whole way through -- something that's not easy to do when self-publishing.
