5 out of 5 stars I've Fallen In Love Again with You--NAJEE!.......2006-07-25

I haven't heard a CD from Najee in a long time and was given this one for a birthday present. My goodness! I L-O-V-E it! There is not one song on this CD that I don't love. Buying this CD will not disappoint you unless you just don't like great music. I can not wait to see what he has in store for us in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Exceptional!.......2006-04-10

This CD is truly one of his best! "Charm","How Lovely You Are", and my favorite-"Miyuki" are some of the BEST songs. You will NOT be disappointed with this CD.

I ordered the product not knowing anything about this website or how secure it was. I was amazed! The turnaround was much more than I expected and the product was not at all damaged. Since then I have ordered about 5 or 6 more CD's and am also amazed at how fast the turnaround is. I would recommend this website to anyone!

Usually I lisen to all the tracks on a CD to decide which one's I want to download. As I listened to this CD my list of tracks that I wanted grew to include all of them, so I bought the CD. You will be very pleased with this one. He is back and has done it again. Brilliant

In this 1963 recording session, pianist Herbie Hancock had a chance to work with a septet that could highlight his burgeoning skills as an arranger and composer. With Hancock's inventive sense of voicings already defined, it's a happy mix of inspired charts and spirited blowing that fuses the hard bop of trumpeter Donald Byrd and tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley with the bluesy approach of guitarist Grant Green and Hancock's own fluent soloing and incisive comping. Also notable is the explosive young drummer Tony Williams, who was already showing the distinctive fire that would soon ignite Miles Davis's band. The track "Blind Man, Blind Man" is a funky romp that clearly builds on Hancock's remarkable success with the earlier "Watermelon Man" and is a harbinger of the pop success he'd later enjoy with the Headhunters. --Stuart Broomer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Herbie has his way (but not his piano).......2006-06-12

Simply put, "Blind Man, Blind Man" is an attempt to come up with another "Watermelon Man" and scarcely rates one listen, so the addition of the alternate take is hardly a bonus (though Mobley deserves some credit for coming up with a few things to say on a single Bb7 chord). The other tracks are highly worthy Hancock originals, full of unusual melody making and unexpected harmonies. "Tribute to Someone" contains a risk-taking yet complete and satisfying solo by Mobley, who also takes chances on "And What If I Don't," faltering a bit this time but still communicative.

"King Cobra" and "The Pleasure Is Mine" are showcases for Hancock's composing and arranging skills, his close harmonizations of the three horns producing some of the richest textures I've ever heard by him. Here Byrd, Mobley, and Moncur form a tight and responsive choir to the antiphonal statements of piano and guitar.

Recording engineer Van Gelder has always had a talent for making his horns sound bigger than life as well as for bringing out all of the sizzle and ring in a drummer's ride cymbal. But the sound of his pianos is always muffled and "bottled up," at best an acquired taste. On this recording, the trademark Van Gelder piano sound is more in evidence than ever. Frankly, I would like to be able to hear Herbie's own idea of how a piano should sound.

5 out of 5 stars Herbie's Best.......2000-07-17

In my opinion, this is Herbie Hancock's best bluenote album. Blind Man, Blind Man is a rewrite of Watermellon Man, but the addition of guitar (Grant Green) and trombone (Grachan Moncur III) give the arrangement a more interesting edge. The next two songs, A Tribute To Someone and King Cobra are the best that Herbie ever wrote. Hank Mobley and Donald Byrd play beautiful on them. Mobley in particular, never sounded so pretty before or after as he does here. And Tony Williams, eighteen on this recording, plays with the maturity and restraint of someone 3 times his age.

A Tribute To Someone and King Cobra, to me, are better than anything Herbie Hancock ever recorded, solo or otherwise. That alone to me makes this record even more essential than Maiden Voyage or Emperyan Isles. The Pleasure is Mind is no Dolphin Dance and And What If I Don't is no Cantaloupe Island, but don't let that stop you from buying this. And don't let reviewers who dream of hearing Maiden Voyage Part II lead you to believe that My Point Of View is in any way inferior to anything Herbie ever recorded for bluenote. And as I mentioned before, if you are a fan of Hank Mobley (as I am) or Donald Byrd, both of them are in prime form. Mobley is at his best. Get the album.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but not Essential.......2000-07-14

Some nice, bluesy/funky writing, and good playing all around, but nothing spectacular. Despite the large group, the arrangements never get too busy. If you like Hancock, you'll like this CD, but it won't knock you off your feet like MAIDEN VOYAGE does.

3 out of 5 stars Decent But Unexceptional Session.......2000-03-29

"Blind Man, Blind Man" is a nice bluesy composition, and "King Cobra" is a decent bop tune. The album as a whole is less impressive than his first was, and not as impressive as the ones that followed, though there's nothing wrong with it per se.

5 out of 5 stars MUSIC FOR ADICTIONAL PURPOSES.......2005-10-22

The Esbjorn Svensson Trio is (one of) the best piano-trio's in the world. They prove the statement that it's impossible for jazz to renew itself, without changing it into something completely different to be totally wrong. The trio has been together for a long time, and that you can hear: they really listen to each other.
They have to, because they tend to put so much space or silence in their music, that it would be very hard to play when they didn't.
A lot of jazzcombinations change their strength a lot, and not always in their advantage. At jazzfestivals you here a lot of theme-solo-solo-solo-boringdrumsolo-theme-jazz, and that's allright when the individuals are interesting enough, but a lot of times it's simply not good enough. Somtimes the reason of that is that the bands are so good that they can change their personal a lot, but it doesn't always do the music good. And this is one of the differences between E.S.T. and some other jazzbands you could hear live.

And then there's their tendency to use 'classical' or folkthemes in their music. E.S.T. does that right too: they're not trying anything but to make great music. They're not playing Bach on a banjo (wich is nice, but doesn't really get to you), but they just look (or listen!) for good themes as a base for their music. That's what they do best and that's what makes all of their albums since From Gagarin's Point Of View worth bying.

What makes the music even better is that they seem to bring a lot of elements of their own Scandinavian musical culture into jazz. Maybe that's the explanation of the feeling you get when you see them play live: they really feel what they're playing. And that makes it possible for the audience to feel it to.

E.S.T. is a piano-bass-drums trio, but they sound bigger than a normal trio. Together with the great sound of acoustic instruments they sometimes put in some electronic elements, but they never overdo it. Most of the time they use it as a contast, to keep the balance between 'the beauty and the beast'. A slightly distorted piano can sound like a recording from 1920 and that effect should even be a plus for the traditional jazz-audience.

Esbjorn Svensson is a great pianoplayer. He can set a mood; he plays real good solo's; he almost lives his music. He's able to play very quietly and very loud and sometimes he does both thing within one tune but than a few times. He's very divers in his playing.

The drummer always gets to you. Sometimes he starts of unobstrusively but somewhere he likes to take the song over to give the tune a groove that can't be denied. By Thor, it's not all silence and quietness! Once again it's about the contrast.

On the album Strange Place For Snow you can hear a tune that has the bassplayer doing a very fast riddle together with the piano. The man on the bass used a line 6 pod (for guitar) on the two live shows I saw in Den Haag and Amsterdam to get some special effects. Very normal, considering what's being done in popular music. Also a great musician!

If you don't know anything about E.S.T. it doesn't matter what album since From Gagarin's Point Of View you buy. The ingredients are the same: beautifull themes, contrast, silence, some electronics, acoustic jazz, building up to climax etc.

Sometimes it's very irritating to see that good musicians don't get recognised enough for the things they are doing. And most of the time not because of the people being to stupid to recognise greatness or beauty, but because of comercial and not cultural considerations. When a lot of American jazzmusicians have that problem, what about Scandinavian? E.S.T. must be heared. Buy the album (or another one of E.S.T.) and spred the gospel of Scandinavian jazz!

4 out of 5 stars Not about the music, but the title.......2005-07-16

A very nice record of the swedish trio. But the name is "Gagarin" (the Russian astronaut, or better, the first one that came back from outer space), not "Gargarin". I look for "Gagarin" about this album but couldn't find it in Amazon site, then I look through the Esbjorn Svensson Trio listing and I found it. Please correct the misspelling.

These ladies are at the top of their game! Beautiful lead voices with stong harmonies backed up by solid instrumentalists. I loved every song on this cd, and was rivited to one spot, til I heard the whole thing. It goes everywhere I do, and I play it over and over. Can't understand why they aren't more widely heard of. It's a shame really, because many bluegrass enthusiasts are missing out on a treat! Way to go New Coon Creek Girls! Keep showing them what you can do!

I just can't figure why these folks are not better known. They are great instrumentalists, have beautiful voices, and are wonderful songwriters. (There are a few covers in here, but well chosen). This is absolutely rock solid straight-ahead bluegrass of the highest caliber. I came across this disk by accident, but what wonderful serendipity!

      5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2006-06-30

I first heard "A Songwriter's Point of View" in 1993 and immediately fell in love with the high energy of this CD. Donald Lawrence led the Tri-City Singers with true style and grace and I felt God on many of the songs. My favorites are "You Encourage my Soul", "The Mender" and Miracles. With help from Stephanie Mills and Peabo Bryson, Donald created a true masterpiece that is still a "must-have" for today.

      5 out of 5 stars The Beginning..............2006-04-30

This is the first album recorded by Donald Lawrence and the Tri-City singers. I remember when I first heard the song Miracles on the radio I instantly fell in love with the harmonious, flawless sound of this choir. And I had to purchase this album. Well that was approximately 15 years ago and I have been a Donald Lawrence/Tri-City fan ever since; having purchased all of their albums as well as his solo project (I Speak Life).

Donald Lawrence is truly a gifted, talented young man who is just one of the best writers, producers, and arrangers of gospel music of all time. The Tri-City Singers are by far the best sounding choir in the history of gospel music. And I do not make this statement lightly -- yes there have always been good/great sounding choirs out there (Thompson Community, New G, LA Mass, etc.), but, TCS are just a notch above the rest. Their sound simply cannot be duplicated; it is unmistakable and it is breathtaking.

And this is where it all begin. If you have purchased any of his projects you would want to get this one to complete your collection.

If you are a gospel music fan you should know that the era of the Tri-City Singers has come to end with the release of Finale Acts I and II. Only 2 of the songs from this their first album made it on the finale -- so you have to hear the rest.

Cassandra Wilson's striking 1985 debut album, Point of View, has been remastered (to 24-bit digital) and repackaged (in a sturdy box set containing the original art work) on this excellent JMT reissue. The Mississippi-raised singer became involved early with Steve Coleman's M-Base collective in Brooklyn, and the eclectic, multifaceted music presented here reflects the stylistic range of that group. Mixing elements of funk, hip-hop, and rock with a solid jazz grounding, Wilson and mates create an original brew. Wilson's husky contralto, with its hints of Abbey Lincoln, Nina Simone, and Betty Carter, is fully integrated into the stop-and-start rhythms and unconventional compositions of Coleman, trombonist Grachan Moncur III, and guitarist Jean-Paul Bourelly. Her sultry voice, Coleman's supple sax, and Bourelly's raw guitar all command equal attention as the tunes unfold in unpredictable ways. Expressive, emotional, and streetwise, the music represented a new generation's revitalization of jazz. Over time, Cassandra Wilson has garnered well-deserved acclaim for her more conventional jazz stylings, but Point of View reveals her youthful, risk-taking adventurousness and is a welcomed rerelease. --Wally Shoup
