Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great CD. Crappy, boring movie.......2006-02-04

ok. This is well worth the money just for the SOUNDTRACK, and most people I know purchased this album FOR the soundtrack. There are new and unreleased Hieroglyphics, Del, Jurassic 5 & Dilated Peoples tracks on here that are all pretty decent and well worth owning. If you just bought this album as an album of underground hip hop, you probably were getting a good buy.

Then there's the Dual-disc factor. Many may not know this, but it is my understanding that this is the FIRST EVER dual disc CD/DVD, which makes it interesting in itself... Unfortunately, One Big Trip, the MOVIE, is extremely boring and uninspired. If I were buying this strictly for the purpose of getting a "new movie" I wouldn't waste my $10 on it or $15 or whatever. The movie is garbage and not worth bothering with. So don't if you don't want to, but don't sleep on the tracks (GUOMD is great) ;)

In short, if you like Hiero & company's music, then you should buy this. It's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars overall, great buy.......2005-09-27

ok first, let me say that though the movie may not be the best one I've ever put in my DVD player, it was certianly amusing and interesting, a bit low budget... but I've never faulted a movie for that. NOW as for the Album... I was pleased and impressed with every track but Del's solo track, and that track was decent... He killed it on the mic, but the music is a bit strange. I can't believe no one has mentioned Royce's track yet, I'm not too familiar with Royce da 5'9" but that track gets me movin yo! and why y'all wanna dis Chali2na and Daakir just cause they did a joint about the wild west? cause thats what it seems like, as the lyrics are still up to par for J5... and I like that beat a lot. DILATED... they have recieved no mention yet, and Downtown is ILL! Heiro gets four tracks and they run it as usual! DTA!!! lemme say that again... DTA!!! all in all, I am VERY glad I purchased this album and I would recommend it to any head out there lookin to expand the collection.

2 out of 5 stars A huge dissapointment........2003-03-26

This thing was hyped up for months on the Heiro site and various other places, I copped it soon after it's release. Where should I begin?
The film: Touting itself as a youthful journey through the highways and biways of america, like some real life Easy Rider for the new millenium, the film fails miserably. I actually could see the concept as an interesting, thought provoking type of experiment. Not so. This was edited, directed, and executed so poorly I wouldn't even consider it at student film status. The premise(no plot); a group of white suburban backpacker types(you like it already?) trek in drug induced stoopers across america asking vague and stupid questions about the millenium to vagrants and junkies. It's self-indulgent, humorless, and often times just plain boring. The movie's only real interesting point is when one of the kids is sold fake ganja by some dope fiend. The kid timidly confronts the heron head who eventually begins sobbing, says he wants to get help, and ultimately still takes off with the kid's 20 bucks. Interesting enough for the moment, but the next scene is all the kids talking about the situation. Over dramatizing it and then coming to the conclusion that it's great footage for the movie. I don't like "The Real World." I don't want to hear pretty suburban kids talk about their "problems." That's what this film is. It was sold as a "hip hop film." It has nothing to do with hip hop. It's the "Real World" on ecstasy. I hate ecstasy too.
The album: The reason I hopped on this product is Heiro. I've never known Del and his crew to ever come wack. The album is just as bad as the movie. Even worse are the songs about the movie.
Conclusion; A DVD on one side, an album on the other, and not a drop of substance between the two. I hope Del hits the studio again soon.

3 out of 5 stars The music part is great, but the movie..........2003-03-24

I love the CD side; it's great hip-hop. But the DVD side itself, maybe oversimply put, is just about a bunch of white people having fun. There is not even much hip-hop music in the movie. Not what I (or you?) expected.

5 out of 5 stars here's the facts.......2002-11-24

I'm not here to complain about how disappointed I am, mostly because I'm not. For thirteen dollars, this is quality product...proportionately speaking of course. Anyhow, the cd aspect--it's not so great, not so bad. Soweto is a great track indubitably and there's a couple other head nodders, I didn't expect anything fantastic lyrically considering the roster. I will argue that the film is interesting and entertaining, however it's not a film. It's more of a documentary and what do you expect...that's the description. It's more accurately a combination of both. It's a story depicted as a documentary. It's not a fabulous voyage, it's not a wonderful adventure, it's just a curiously interesting movie about the people this group encounters, the places they visit, the obvious conflict and dilemma involved among those, and the things they do recreationally along the way. There is a climax, there is conflict, there's emotion, happiness, sadness, etc. Many elements of a thorough drama. The plot isn't exceptional but like I repeat, what do you expect? It's satisfactory by any means though. Just to watch at least once. So to conclude this, if you're expecting this extremely great film that never made a theatrical release...you'll be disappointed. If you're a realist and expect the creative depiction and artistic expression of a collective perception on life...you'll be easily satisfied. I give it a five because it's unique enough in its own that it was done for the 'hip-hop' venue. I based this opinion on the overall product though, not each element of cd vs. dvd. But collectively, it's worth a five to me.

5 out of 5 stars Maynard still ROCKS!.......2005-03-03

This has become one of the most prized CD's in my collection. One quick correction of a previous reviewer : Larry Foyen does not play lead on this CD, Scott Englebright does. And man, does he have the chops! This whole album is nicely woven and tightly played, with plenty of stratospheric trumpet for the true Maynard enthusiast. Scotty is one of the very best lead players MF has ever had, even going back to the Stan Mark days. Sorry Matt Wallace, but I could do without "She was too good to me" and the bad vocals, but the rest of this compilation is A ++. And at 70 + years old, all I can say is.. You GO, Maynard!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, Maynard still has it for sure!.......2003-09-28

*Special Note: I'm reposting this under my own name since the original was mistakenly posted under a different one, I did in fact write this review myself. My mistake for putting in the wrong name.*

Maynard has to be the coolest Canadian ever. Such an enthusiastic player, even at age sixty-eight, when this performance was done. "You Got It" is a pretty nice opener, it's energetic to say the least. However, the best performance on the album is easily the following track (in my opinion) Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca". What a great rendition, Maynard goes absolutely nuts! There is also great trombone and alto saxophone soloing. "The Vibe" is a hint at laid-back Maynard, he plays with a flugelhorn here and sounds nice, using his upper register effectively in the places it's best suited to be. "Cajun Cookin'" is a cool Denis DeBlasio arragement but honestly I'm not really wild about it. It's nice but not my favorite. The chart of "Milestones" was the huge disappointment, however. I had played through this chart and loved it, but this recording was sub-par. The saxophone solo is too long and Maynard should've done a lot more with this tune than the short harmon mute solo and screaming at the end. I expected a lot more. However, the lacking of the "do" at the end is great, look at the liner notes for reference on that. Matt Wallace also comes up with a nice vocal on "She Was Too Good To Me", and the trumpet section comes with some nice screaming headed by Larry Foyen. The new "Birdland" is decent, although not on the level of the original, but you have to love the ESPN Sportscenter ending. "Blues From Around Here" is a classic. The whole band swings like crazy on this tune, which sounds like it's based on the changes to "Watermelon Man". Maynard goes crazy on here, and Don Zank swings on piano. The performance ends with a fast remake of "It Don't Mean A Thing", the famous Duke Ellington classic. This was a good way to end the album.

Overall, if you're a Maynard fan, this is one that is worth picking up. Maynard is playing amazingly well, especially for someone of his age. Whoever said he sounded terrible is totally wrong! I'll admit Maynard had some tone trouble on Live In London but none here. However, as an overall product, this album is not as good as Live In London, in my opinion. However, these are both worthy buys. If you're new to Maynard, get acquainted with some of his work with the Kenton band, and then some of his 60's and 70's bands.

5 out of 5 stars What a terrible review below........2003-05-01

This is a spectacular album and to think that it is live is that much more impressive. The man is now 75 and still tours and does "alright" with his band Big Bop Nouveau. I saw him at a show where all the trumpet players came out into the audience and Maynard followed suit only to blow them all away with his fat, screaming tone. Maynard always was, still is, and always will be the man. By the way that show was last year. So if you like a really good band with a really good leader this is a must have.

2 out of 5 stars Maynard sounds terrible!.......2003-02-14

Too bad Maynard Ferguson didn't stop recording back in the 70's. His solos sound the same on every single track on this recording "One More Trip to Birdland". His tone is terrible! Too many years of playing in the stratosphere. I am reluctant to give this recording any stars, however, Maynard has an extremely talented band behind him. Too bad Maynard wouldn't let them play more - and consider retiring. Sorry, Maynard, your music with Stan Kenton is amazing - however this album was not worth my money!

      Album Description

"Theme Composed by Jerry Goldsmith" Jericho was a WWII adventure series following three Allied specialists on secret missions throughout Europe. The theme and second episode were scored by Jerry Goldsmith in his military-suspense mode, replacing a theme by Lalo Schifrin who had scored the pilot. Goldsmith's theme and complete episode score are included on this CD, as are Schifrin's unused theme and a suite from his pilot score, significantly foreshadowing his music to Mission: Impossible. The remainder of Jericho was scored by Morton Stevens, Gerald Fried and Richard Shores, and suites from all of their episodes are included. The music recalls the style of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. but perhaps more grim. "Music Composed and Conducted by Johnny Williams" The Ghostbreaker was a one-hour pilot starring Kerwin Mathews as a parapsychologist investigator; although foreshadowing such television series as Kolchak: The Night Staker and The X-Files, it did not proceed to a series. The theme and pilot score to The Ghostbreaker were by none other than John (then "Johnny") Williams, who wrote a dynamite theme that compares favorably to his TV work for Irwin Allen, and a creepy score including harpsichord and solo soprano. The totality of Williams's score is included here -- a forgotten jewel by one of the world's most famous composers.
