Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Original Slim Shady.......2007-04-03

Back in the late 90's, a white rapper emerged from the underground with a high pitched voice and a don't give a **** attitude. His lyrics were a lot different from the standard hip hop fare, and were often shocking and controversial, releasing his untamed Id on listeners. But as much as his raps shook people, they connected with them too. He became an icon, beloved around the world and changed rap forever. That rapper's name was...

...well, it was Eminem. But this is the debut album of Cage, an early rival that claimed, not unjustifiably, that Eminem had ripped off his style. Back when Cage released his first single, the incendiary "Agent Orange", Eminem had been a positive, squeaky-clean rapper. After Cage's record broke, it became clear a white rapper could make up for not being a gangsta by spinning crazy fantasies of drug use and cartoon violence. Eminem's next release, the breakthrough Slim Shady EP that sealed a deal with Dr.Dre, sounded a lot like Agent Orange, only with more humor.

In a way, Eminem's "Slim Shady" character is a more mainstream, funny version of Cage. So it can be a little surprising hearing Eminem's original inspiration. Cage is arguably not as good a rapper as Eminem technically. Unlike Eminem, who crafted raps like "Stan" and "Just the Two of Us" into long narrative stories, Cage's raps from the same time period usually sound like random free association, with one line having no bearing on the last one. Cage later confessed that the raps on Movies For The Blind were written while he was on drugs. It shows.

Cage has since cleaned up his act and quit hard drugs, and started writing
more confessional songs (You can hear the new grown-up Cage on his classic last album, Hell's Winter, and his new album Depart From Me, due 2007). But this album showcases him in his youth, at his nastiest and vitriolic. An X-rated, no-joke version of Slim Shady isn't for everyone, but if it sounds like your thing, Cage is one of the best, and a true artist at conveying what he feels, as creepy and black as those emotions are. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Vision for the Ears.......2005-12-08

Although I personally am not a huge fan of the other artists in Cage's label, to me, he is a gem hidden in the rough. Cage is extremely creative, clever, has a great ear for beats, and then meshes with the beats perfectly. The topics of this cd may not be in everyone's favor, but that one of the points he is making. Each time I listen to this disc I come up with another reason I like it. Great story lines. Amazing samples. It even makes me laugh at times. "..stuck the canister under my jacket like a lucky gun.. sir you can't leave with that! b**** this my f****ing son!" / "I'm so homesick I miss mom's fallopian tubes!"
yeah ,thats the ticket.

5 out of 5 stars classic.......2005-12-05

this is the best of rap period, nothing further needs to be said. any emcee, famous or not, is as of yet unable to match the verbal technique, production, or hardness of this album. i listen to movies for the blind on a daily basis.

5 out of 5 stars Dont listen to the bad reviews........2005-08-10

Plain and simple...Cage is one of the best Underground rappers around.....And soon after Hell's Winter drops I think he will be accepted into mainstream......This CD is Cage at his craziest, the beats are hott, the rhymes are hot...BUY THIS CD....and if you like this CD buy some of his other CDs, Weatherproof, Night Hawks, Smut Peddler's : porn Again, The Leak Brothers: Water World, and Hell's Winter.
