With Sweden's Teddybears, big-beat electro pop is alive and well. Of course, the insanely poppy vibe of "Cobrastyle," with dancehall kingpin Mad Cobra setting up the "my style is the bomb" chorus, is the band's most recognizable episode--boasting and hip-swiveling and carefree. And even though the tune appeared in 2004 on the After the Sunset soundtrack, it's vital mood lighting here--setting up the infectious, airy pop of "Yours to Keep," with Neneh Cherry on vocals, and Iggy Pop's chugging paean to fashion and poise, "Punkrocker." Oh, it rocks. Only in Sweden could you find an electro-pop band--helmed by a guitarist from garage rock champions the Caesars--inviting Mad Cobra, Cherry, Iggy, and Ebbot Lundberg (from Soundtrack of Our Lives) to consort across 13 tracks. Ear candy in spots, the album is perfect for heavy rotation, melodic and then more melodic. By the way, Iggy and Ebbot sound awesome--elevating the tunes with their distinctive rock yowls and drawing attention to a band that's been toiling away on the fringes for more than a decade. It bumps, it jiggles, and it swirls psych-like. --Andrew Bartlett

Album Description

Teddybears whip together a giddy, mixed-up sonic mash of international styles, resulting in their own indescribably delectable sound. Collaborators on this release include Iggy Pop, Neneh Cherry, Elephant Man, Annie, and the Soundtrack Of Our Lives' Ebbot Lundberg. The result is an awe-inspiring collection of genre-hopping modern pop that's inventive, irresistible, and impossible to pin down. The Stockholm-based trio's effervescent pop has already been featured in a variety of films and commercials. Most recently, the fab funk of "Cobrastyle" was heard on HBO's "Entourage" as well as in the Tab Energy Drink ad campaign, and will be featured in trailers for the upcoming film, "Employee Of The Month", starring Dane Cook and Jessica Simpson.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-03

As good, if not better than all their previous work. It is however mostly remixes of previous songs- they're all awesome though. Well worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars Top of my CD stack for 2 months.......2007-06-02

Absolutely awesome! Propulsive, tight and addictive. Plus, it's not just me -- I've played this at my house parties, and EVERYONE asks me who this is.

Every time I fall in love with a track, the next track makes me re-think my position. Each time I listen, I'm amazed at their ingenuity.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-04-08

All the songs are different from each other and many are good, some are great, none are awful!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Global and Generational Appeal.......2007-03-03

Normally I avoid Punk,Techno-Dance, types of music like the plague. But after purchasing and listening to TeddyBears "Soft Machine," I'm sold and this is coming from a 43 year old American male. Good music like all art spans the Globe, Cultures, and Generations.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable time-capsule of a dance album.......2007-02-21

Like many Americans, my first exposure to the this Teddybears album was through the Iggy Pop-voiced single "Punkrocker". I've always had a fondness for European techno (unlike Americans, the folk on the other side of the pond seem to understand the idea of using variation to keep their mixes interesting), and the synthesized background tracks were catchy, so I went to check out the whole album. The results were a little different than I expected - while "Punkrocker" is definitely in the same vein as the rest of the songs, it's definitely not representative of the album as a whole. There is a wide range of themes and attitudes here, as evidenced by the myriad guest vocalists. What ties it all together, however, is the persistent dance sound that will have you moving to the music almost subconsciously.

Whether or not you'll be into the album as a whole depends mostly on whether you're open to revisiting the 80s early-techno genre. For those who appreciate the style, there's much to like - old-school primitive synthesizer tracks are overlaid with some excellent vocal turns (other standouts include Elephant Man's "Are You Feelin' It" and Neneh Cherry's "Yours to Keep"). The experimental time-capsule nature of the album verges on self-awareness at times, with results ranging from biting (the lyrics of "Punkrocker") to amusing (the vocal appearance of the Fred voice of the Macintosh Classic in "Automatic Lover"). And while the lyrics are hardly multilayered, the tracks themselves are more than enjoyable enough to justify repeat listening.

"Soft Machine" may be a bit simplistic in scope and execution, but this is a nonetheless enjoyable album that makes a nice alternative to much of the other bubblegum-pop ear candy on the radio today.

5 out of 5 stars Spice hits again with yet another classic.......2004-11-03

He does it again. His 5th album is yet another classic to add to his collection of many. This man shows as he ages he still can rap, and rap good. It has 3 classics, 1 song I skip, 1 that's ok and the rest are good or great. Production is great and handled by a lot of people, Paris (4 songs), ant Banks, Ric Rock, and Ali Malek (2 songs each), and Hen gee, Payback, Mike Mosely each do a song and Femi O. co-produces on 2 tracks. If he had airplay out here on the east coast I'd bet he'd have many multi-platinum plaques on his wall. That's what's wrong with rap, hardly any of the good rappers sell. All th fake a*s pu*sy's sell the most. If you wanna hear some real rap from a real cat who's been in the game puttin out albums since '88 check out Spice 1. Get this album!!

5 out of 5 stars Better than 1990-Sick.......2004-02-19

I believe the only reason this album is not liked more than hes previous effort is purely due to it being hes next release. The album is more of a 1990-Sick part 2 than a knew inovative effort and I think alot of fans expect to much of there rappers to create knew ideas and beats instead of just cranking the bass and feeling the beats and bouncing on the ride. Black Bossalini does this better than Sick although both albums are simply impressive. Spice 1 is one of the games best flowing MCs pretty much only his trade mark and annoyingly boring BLOW call takes prestige off hes name. However he has been given deep riding beats again on this album to work with and it comes off in a much enjoyable way. The opening 2 tracks are great openers especially Im High. Its a great song to listen to in that way. Ant Banks steals the show as Fetty Chico and the Mack has a typical deep funk groove by the master producer and Recognize game is up there as one of the best as well. Ballin is a fun track and Diamonds is one of the best softer produced tracks I have heard by any artist. The hook is extremely catchy. This is Spice 1s best in my opinion. It makes me wonder how he could drop so low with hes follow up to this Immortalized. Its not even worth rating.

5 out of 5 stars SPICE 1'S LAST STAND.......2002-11-29

spice 1's self titled debut in 1991 was a 'west coast geto boys' type album, menatally unbalanced rhymes but over LA funk. however his following three albums were less inspired, musically and lyrically.

however in 1997 spice released this gem, his 5th album. for once he put together a top production team. the beats, mainly provided by paris, are deeply funky and catchy, and use low, heavy bass lines. for once spice doesn't let you down on the production tip and lyrically he's on good form.

this album just flows together perfectly, classic groove after classic groove. spice took some time off after this album and has since become 'just another rapper' unfortunately. but this, along with his self titled debut, are his classics.

3 out of 5 stars Tight CD.......2002-05-29

This CD is pretty sick, Spice 1 puts it down. There arent too many great songs on this cd though, the 5 good ones are sick though. buy this only if you really like spice 1.

5 out of 5 stars A BAY AREA CLASSIC.......2000-11-10

You can't f*%k with Speezy ace. This is a classic cd that you can't let go. It's has been a while since it first came out, but for all those so called playas that ain't bumpin this sh%t. You better get your a s s to a record store and buy it. Peace.

4 out of 5 stars Good for old school dudes.......2007-05-13

I had this CD as a teen and I really liked it. A friend of mine stole it from me a long time ago and I really missed it. The songs are catchy, there is no vulgarity and its just a good CD for the collection. People of all ages can enjoy this one. Its a classic. Great songs are: "Hold tight" and The ever popular "I'm Real" which is why I bought this CD again.

This was an album for only their core fanbase to like--the kids who were too young to even want to pay attention to content. Absolutely horrible album. Their first one was the only good album that they have put together. They have shown maturity on this album but didn't show with their skills.

3 out of 5 stars Kaboom! .......2005-10-02

If one was to ever speak about kiddy bubble gum rap / hip-hop, Kris Kross would be of those mentioned. Their sophomore release Da Bomb detonated a little too soon to get a more critically acclaimed LP. The title track featured the newcomer Da Brat for a strong performance. Retaliating on lashes from others, "Alright" featuring Super Cat states they're cool on battling or whatever. Hard kicks and guitar licks added an edge for this album on "I'm Real". Kris Kross their formula to flowing to Jermaine Dupri's tracks on "Freak Da Funk". Though we know Jermaine Dupri entirely wrote and produced the entire album, Mac Daddy began writing his own lyrics on three of the songs. It's a step away from their first album but there was a lack of originality that kept it from gaining a serious acknowledgement.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE BOMB!.......2005-08-28

This album is the next best banging from Kris Kross. These ***** is too crazy. They even cuss on their music. Their trying to get your attention when they curse. Adults, Parents, Old People and Mature Teenagers (Come on yall, I know there's a lot of White People that is more Mature and I'm not being Raciest). Their trying to get your attention so you can get your moneys worth. I seen these guys from "A Different World" and they Rap mostly like Ja Rule, Get Murder and Gatted in the Back, shoot, mostly like Styles, shoot, mostly like Me. I talk Gun Talk. Like Al Pinco, The Aries. Dog I'm the Capricorn. And all of that we can talk about, I give this Album 5 STARS! Watch this.

a long lost funk classic, this would have blew up except, that funk was dying especially all things connected with george clinton, and his crew. if you miss the talents of bernie worrell get this. tyrone lampkin's drumming is not as wold as it was when he was a funkadelic, but be warned it is fun filled, just not hardcore funk, it's like chic being silly.

This is a long lost P-Funk classic featuring the talents of Bernie Worrell and the impeccably named Nairobi Sailcat. Without even seeing this dude you can picture the way he funks. Tight riffs with the signature classic P-Funk sound and as a bonus there is a reworked version of 'Pump It Up' which is different to the original (also on here) and funky as hell in it's own right. Alongside the Mutiny albums, this has to be one of the long lost classics from the golden era of P-Funk. Highly recommended for all clones and maggots.
