No need to waste time making a mixtape for your next blues bash--just throw on this disc and let Elvin Bishop be your host for a night of rollicking fun. Bishop has traditionally been known for bouncy shows that incorporate both the deep blues he cut as an original member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and the country-styled soul he gravitated to as one of the Capricorn label's popular Southern rock acts in the '70s. You can practically see his goofy grin and wild eyes as he knocks back an hour's worth of highlights from a 2006 show. Accompanied by a sympathetic eight-piece band that includes three background vocalists and a trombonist who also plays rubboard, this is a nonstop party that doesn't even slow down for the topical, politically based ruminations of "What the Hell Is Going On," one of only two tracks reprised from his appropriately titled 2005 comeback Gettin' My Groove Back. The slow blues of "Belly Rubbin'" and the opening instrumental "Stomp" spotlight Bishop's impressive guitar chops, but this is truly a group effort. He turns lead vocals over to other band members for three tracks, and if he's not enjoying himself as much as the audience, he ought to be nominated for an Oscar instead of a Grammy. Bishop cherry-picks "Stealin' Watermelons" from his early years, but generally sticks to fresh tunes and unusual covers such as Roy Milton's humorous "Keep a Dollar in Your Pocket" and Junior Parker's frisky "I Feel Alright Again." Let the booty bumpin' begin! --Hal Horowitz

3 out of 5 stars Lose the orchestration........2007-05-14

Why doesn't someone in the industry put out a "Bumpin" CD minus the extra orchestration (just the original rhythm section with Wes)? They must have it since the arrangement was fleshed out later. In fact there must be gobs of great Wes stuff buried under all those those dated orchestral arrangement records he made. I love Wes Montgomery's playing but hate the fuddy-duddy arrangements. I have all his small combo stuff. It would be fantastic to hear some of his other stuff minus all the strings, etc.
    What a concept!

5 out of 5 stars Forget those who barf too much.......2007-03-08

Contrary to the "two star" wonder this is Wes at his Bes.' You don't like strings? What about Miles and Gil Evans? Ben Webster did it. So did Coltrane. Just about every Jazz artist has. Relax. One has to consider the era in which this album was recorded; from the mid fifties to the sixties, popular music ruled the airwaves. All jazz artists at that time were trying to connect to a broader if younger audience. So get a grip!
On a personal note, this was one of the first jazz albums I bought at the tender age of twelve, and I played it right along with my Beatles, Stones, Supremes, Cream, Canned Heat, Hendrix and Byrds records. I don't see how anyone can piss and moan about a Van Gelder-Sebesky-Creed Taylor production.
The newer 20 bit transfer sounds better than the older transfer, and with the out-takes included, is great value for the money. This cd sounds GREAT on my vacumn tube system, 'though not as great as the remastered vinyl versions.
Still, the tune Bumpin' alone and by itself makes this a must have in my music collection any day.

5 out of 5 stars In my top 5 of all time!.......2007-01-16

I am shocked and amazed at the 'critics' giving this cd such a low review. It is hauntingly beautiful and complex. The arrangements with the strings paired with a relaxed and fluid Wes, it's going to be that cd you put on to win people over to Jazz. In generic terms, this cd is perfect from start to end.

    3 out of 5 stars it's ok.......2006-11-12

This CD is quite ok, but it ain't jazz....It would be nice for background at a cocktail party, not disturbing the conversatio. If you like that, buy this cd, if you are looking for jazz, pass this one:)

5 out of 5 stars Swank, hip, cool and 110% pure jazz!!!.......2005-03-19

This cd is Wes' best, because it is 110% pure improvised jazz, but with a Gil Evans style orchestration, that adds some occasioanl latin and bossa nova flare. The Shadow of Your Smile, is a cool jazz bossa nova, and many of the originals are borderline lounge/jazz, but that is why it's such a cool album, that you can play at parties, or for romantic candlelite dinners. This album has many moods and colors and variations. As an artist I can appreciate the colorful orchestrations, and they do not at all interfere with Wes' guitar grooves. I must admid it is better on lp, but this reissue is exellent, for the car!!!

This was a good cd back in the day.I'm from southeast Georgia (Brunswick)and I grew up listening to Booty music. When This came out in "94" I was in Army BT,and remember listening to it on the DL.I still crank it up till this day.

4 out of 5 stars Dis N Dat Be Bumpin........2000-02-15

A majority of the songs on this LP bumped and that's saying a lot considering the fact that most bass music isn't to comprehensible when it comes to albums. Dis N Dat is an exception. My favorite song would have to be "Dis N Dat" I love how it rides out. I still hum it to this day. If I'm the only one that owns this album, then oh well, I guess I'll be the only one who can truly appreciate it.

4 out of 5 stars Smooth or hot?.......2006-10-23

I get the feeling from this CD that Dylan Cramer is trying to make up his mind whether to be a "smooth" jazz player a la Grover Washington, et.al., or the real deal; I hope he opts for the latter because he's certainly got the talent and chops to make his mark in the legitimate jazz world. Quite a few of the tunes here are slow, simple ballads, heavy on the synthesizer; they are pleasant and dreamy but oh so surfacey. Others, however (the two Wes Montgomery songs and Carl Perkins's GROOVE YARD, for example), have Dylan flexing some muscle and show a lot of swing. On these tunes his talent comes to the forefront, and his prowess on the alto sax is revealed superbly. He plays in a post-bop style and sounds a lot to me like another excellent alto man playing today - Dave Glaser. Both play with a cool, metallic sound rather than warm and reedy. Come on, Dylan, forget the jazz lite stuff and let it all hang out - we need more of the real deal kind of jazz out there today.

      5 out of 5 stars This guy's good...........2005-04-14

I order many sax CDs hoping every once in awhile to get some good sounding stuff....not just a bunch of distorted honking about a quarter of a key off....THIS fellow (Cramer) is good....You can tell he's had ultra-training and expertise education....Hope you will give it a listen.....Also, e-mail me at enka@direcway.com if you know of any independent sax players CDs I might like....thanks

      5 out of 5 stars Cramer Blows Soulful(l) Notes.......2003-12-24

Cramer's blows his alto sax soooo smoooooth - the CD is lyrical, soulful(l), romantic, warm, sophisticated, playful with gorgeous trills. The other musicians are great too, especially the pianist. This CD is a perfect compliment to Diana Krall.

This band is so awesome. A combination of jazz and funk. When you hear this CD, you will not be able to sit still. It will definately keep you moving. They are a great live band and the fact that this CD was recorded live makes it 10 times better.

4 out of 5 stars The Funkin Best.......2000-04-04

I bought this cd at a concert I saw the band play at Clarkson University. It has great sound and can keep the party bumpin' all night long! The only reason I gave it four stars rather that five is because the guitarist on the cd is diffrent than the one I saw at the show, and the guitarist at the show blows the one on the cd away! Plus his dreadlocks rule!

Man ! These guys are veterans of NYC neuvo party funk. They were the only OPENING band I would actually look forward to hearing. It brings a tear in my eye to remember all the times I heard the open for Chuck Brown + The P-Funk Horns at Tramps... and how Tramps recently lost their lease. - - The sound is fun and funky. Ironically, its what... BECK (the band, not guitarist) were trying to sound like on SNL a few weeks ago. After you listen to this... check out MOTHERs FINEST... and maybe even a bit of KID CREOLE & THE COCONAUTS...
