Fans of Rickie Lee Jones and Jesus Christ can decide whether this devotional music is rapturously spiritual or deliriously strange. It sounds like nothing Jones has previously released, or anything characterizable as contemporary Christian. Instead, her voice soars and wobbles through repetitive, stream-of-consciousness incantations over rhythmic throbs and pulses. On "Where I Like It Best," Jones testifies to the power of private prayer (while seeming to cast churchgoers as hypocrites). The feral distortions of "Tried to Be a Man" recall some of the textures (if not the themes) of her former boyfriend Tom Waits, while the acoustic setting of "Donkey Ride" features guitar tunings that might make Sonic Youth wince and "Elvis Cadillac" conjures a singular vision of heaven. At close to eight and a half minutes, the closing "I Was There" seems to follow Van Morrison into the mystic. Some of this music is oddly affecting; much of it is merely odd. --Don McLeese

Beautiful and Unique.......2007-07-23

Not like anything I've ever heard from Rickie Lee Jones. I've read some of the other reviews, so felt compelled to write one. Not everyone song works, but all are powerful and moving. If you are looking for glossy, packaged, commercial pop, this isn't right for you. If you are looking for incantatory, raw, eclectic music with a spiritual twist and stream of consciousness lyrics, then this is for you. This album is a revelation.

jangly unpleasant.......2007-07-03

I love rickie's music, especially "evening" and "traffic", even "ghostyhead" is more palatable than this mess. Maybe it's the obnoxious music that is obscuring the usual beauty of her voice and poetry... I don't know. It is harder to find the moments of beauty and cohesion in this album than to sit through drunken kareoke. Even amazon's attempt at offering soundbytes with selling points is rough. I guess I'll just do as another reviewer is, stash this unpleasantness and await her next recording.

I always considered Rickie to be a rawer Joni Mitchell. As Courtney Love is a rawer Madonna. But too often she seemed unfocused and distracted.

On this one Rickie shines! This is the high mark of her career so far. Through all the drug hazed days and aimless wandering she's seen the light.

If you never listen to another Rickie album, at least give this one a try.

Falling Up is the song I can't get out of my head.
It Hurts and Elvis Cadillac are other catchy pop tunes.
Nobody Knows My Name and Gethseme are haunting tunes.

Two and one-half stars. I've been a fan of RLJ from her first single, but her albums have always fallen into one of two categories for me: the ones I play all the way through ("Rickie Lee Jones", "Traffic From Paradise", "It's Like This"), and the ones I take a song or two from for the Rickie Lee playlist on my iPod ("The Magazine", "Flying Cowboys"). "The Sermon" falls into the latter category. "Chuck E" aside, hooky pop ditties have never been RLJ's strong suit -- even considering that, "The Sermon" is a tough listen, and is only intermittently worth the effort. After several listens, I am still looking for the songs. I know you're not Avril Levigne, Rickie, but give me something to hang onto here! Her talk-sung sermonette on prayer, "Where I Like It Best", brings tears every time I hear it, on sheer force of emotional authenticity: she exhorts the listener to "take back" prayer from organized religion, to look up and shout "I'm down here, too! I'm down here, too!", and it's goose bump material. "Elvis Cadillac" is a funky hipster vision of the afterlife, and you can't help but smile. But those two songs and the occasional inspired line ("Riding into town on your donkey/But you're going out on a cross") notwithstanding, much of "The Sermon" is jangly accompaniment to a poetry reading.

Only buy it for the packaging............2007-05-09

Talk about one-hit wonders. This disc was so discordant that I could only stand about one-half of one song before I shut it off and hid it away, just in case one of my kids tried to play it someday. Even the lyrics were self-indulgent. When will indies understand that there must be SOMETHING for another HUMAN BEING to connect with, whether it be the music or the words. Don't make us work so hard to like you, Rikkie.

From the swaggering frustration in the first song ("I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping," Mick Jagger sings in the hyper "Rocks Off"), the Stones speed through familiar neighborhoods of country, blues, and R&B on Exile. They never even bother to stop when they've crashed into something. They don't leap into new worlds so much as master the old ones, turning Slim Harpo's blues obscurity "Hip Shake" into a harp-and-piano steamroller and setting spines a-cracking in "Ventilator Blues." Both "Tumbling Dice" and Keith Richards's "Happy" have become hits, but the 1972 album is most notable for its overall murky adrenaline. --Steve Knopper

Before Keith Richards's bad habits took over for a time in the mid-'70s, his work ethic was quite high. Stories abound of the long, if somewhat off-schedule, hours he spent working on this classic album in the basement of his home in France. Hanging together as much because of great songwriting ("Rocks Off," "Soul Survivor") as its fabled grungy atmosphere, Exile caps the Stones' great 1968-'72 run with a force that belies their supposed spiritual tiredness. What some of these songs are about is anybody's guess--Keith claims "Ventilator Blues" was inspired by a grate, while the song plays like an ode to a pistol--but that's just part of this album's hazy game. --Rickey Wright

Raw, relentless Stones.......2007-07-16

I was imagining this is to be the Stones' "White Album", right? - a double album which coulda made an incredible single album. A big reason it's not is that the Beatles' opus was wildly eclectic, with 1930s crooners, art songs, even garage music. This '72 effort, with all the verbiage about rediscovered echoey dungeons in somewhere in France, has a very consistent sound, thanks to the Glimmer Twins and all their good friends (Bobby Keys, Jim Price, Bill Plummer, et. al.). Gotta say, though, there are some tentative "B-side" quality cuts, and it's to their credit that the Stones open the double-album with one of them, "Rocks Off". Let's see, we'll also put "Casino Boogie", "Ventilator Blues" on the shelf....just kidding.
"Rip This Joint" was probably the best pure R & R song for that whole year, despite the high profiles that year of '50s originators like Ricky Nelson ("Garden Party"), Chuck Berry ("My Ding-A-Ling" and "Reelin' And Rockin'), Elvis Presley ("Burning Love"), and Little Richard ("Rockin' With The King" - Canned Heat with LR). When it came to roots music, they could do it better than all of them (except for when Richard showed up with his full band, at that time).
They proved they understood the blues, too, delivering on Slimp Harpo's "Shake Your Hips" (saw Mr. Penniman perform it in Trenton, NJ, in 2003 - did he dig the Stones' version?). "Turd On The Run", despite the lousy title, brings 'em back to the '60s and their many Bo Diddley "tributes", this one takes off like an SUV leaving the parking lot of a New Jersey community college at 6pm on a Friday, and never slows down.
Now to the real heavyweights, and you can name 'em, "Tumbling Dice", the super hit; "Sweet Black Angel", a beautiful folk-blues said to have been written about Activist Angela Davis; "Happy", still sounding great.
"Shine A Light", featuring Billy Preston, re-emerges with even more brightness. A real gem, which should have proven to be a true Pop perennial.
"Sweet Virginia", almost straight ahead Country, also warrants reappraisal as an almost "lost" artifact.
Small criticism: voices are mixed too far back; this together with the occasional monochromatic sound image, can put the listener on edge.
I guess it's in the spirit of serious bluesmen, combing that dank and dusty basement overseas for some scent of the American Delta.

A MASTERPIECE! ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS EVER MADE!.......2007-07-10

This is such an incredible two album set. From the opening guitar lick of "Rocks Off" to the final strum in "Soul Survivor" we know we have just listened to a amazing collection of music! This is not a hits album by any stretch! It is a record that sounds great from start to finish or picking random cuts. I am a musician and I have been a DJ in past years in clubs and pubs. I always got a great response from the hip customers when I would throw in "Casino Boogie" or "All Down The Line" in at the local pub. What some folks don't understand is how many different sounding songs are on this album! Most groups today have one or two songs and they just keep regurgitating them out over and over again to fill album after album. This is the my favorite Stones album and it doesn't even contain my favorite Stones song! A timeless classic!

Timeless, and even better (!) than I remembered.......2007-07-03

You know, I haven't visited this album in a long time; it has been one of my very favorite works of art since its release in '72, but it seemed like one of those things that might have been played out for me. I've been helping my wife load her iPod with things I think are essential, and naturally this came to mind, so in the process I gave it another spin. To say that I am reinfatuated is an understatement, which gives rise to this review. "Exile" is just such a work of uncommon depth and maturity and desperation and joy and carnality and the whole nine yards that it is nearly staggering. Plus it rocks harder than you ever will. Don't listen to haters who bemoan its lack of hits; it flows like nothing else...best digested as a whole. And anyways, "Tumbling Dice" was a certifiable hit back in the day; I know, I was alive then, and it was an indelible part of the soundtrack of the summer of '72. This listen brought me back to my very first needle drop on "Rocks Off" in '72 when I was 13 years old. From the first whomp of Charlie's drums I remember it as being a life-changing experience that gave me some idea of what adult music and life was all about. And the power and glory of this record is such that I have always been mystified over the critical response alluding to the allegedly murky mix, etc. To me it simply sounds like the perfect example of what rock and roll is supposed to sound like, and when words and phrases emerge from the mix they're almost always a surprise, even after thirty-five years. This record is proof positive of the enduring greatness of the Stones, and is to my ears their finest hour, and then some.

Quick question: My CD version of this is an original CBS era iteration (bought it like in '87-88), and it still sounds pretty good to me, even with the undoubted advances in mastering since then. Is this relatively newer Virgin version a BIG BIG BIG sonic upgrade, or just a sonic uptick? Thanks!

Exile on my street.......2007-05-30

Exile on main street is one of the best. With a variety of styles it nrver drags. Great songs like Let it loose, Shine a light. Rocks Off, Soul Surivor Tumbling Dice and Ventilator Blues is a paint peeler. Sweet Virginia and Torn and Frayed are good country.Stop Breaking down and shake your Hips are good blues, good slide on stop Breaking Down Texas blues on Shake your Hips. Sweet Black Angel is great reggae.

This was my favorite Dylan album after "Oh Mercy" and before "Blood on the Tracks" was. I think "4th Time Around" or "Sooner or Later" are my favorites; but really all songs on hear are good. I will note though that I didn't like "Most Likely You'll go your way and I'll go Mine" at first but I love it now, and I don't really like Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat" much anymore.
Dylan Proves with this album that he is as relevant and fresh now as he was years ago. No Dylan fan should go without this, or any "Music fan" for that matter.

one bad long cut.......2007-06-27

blonde on blonde is along with bringing it all back home and highway 61 revisited dylans major claim to poetical genius. he never attained these wild heights again. sad eyed lady of the lowlands, which encompasses one whole side of a double cd, is a real downer and a flop. it goes on and on with no real great melody and platitudinous lyrics. dylan wrote it too fast in the chelsea hotel and it just doesn't work in any shape or form. aside from that, the whole cd is a work of a genius which really rocks. look out especially for visions of johanna and absolutely sweet marie which george harrison ripped into in dylan's 30th anniversary concert.

A Masterpiece.......2007-03-08

Did a previous reviewer actually spend all that time talking about Dylan's voice? Is there a person on the planet who doesn't already know Dylan's voice isn't "good"? I don't think saying it's "an acquired taste" is being an apologist, it's the truth.

There's not a weak track on this album, and even if you aren't listening intently to the lyrics and the melodies, it'll still run you through the gamut of human emotions and leave you ready to go through it all again.

oldies that are hard to find........2007-07-13

Thank you so much for sending me the CD's. They are great and I have been playing them over and over again. I have had so much trouble finding them and I am greatful I have found this website and I do plan to order some more in the future.

Disappointing.......2007-05-26

There are really only two tunes on this album that are both hard to find and desirable, and I bought it for the rarer of the two- Jim Pepper's great "Witchi Tai To" from the long out-of-print album, "Pepper's Pow Wow."

Unfortunately I was terribly disappointed to discover that the version presented here is a very short 2 minute and 55 second version, without the introductory chant. Luckily the version of Miriam Makeba's "Pata Pata" presented here was also one I wanted for my collection, but that's a lot to pay for one song.

As for the other sings on the disk- a few are winner, most are forgettable, and one- "Papa Joe's"- was incredibly annoying when I originally heard it on the radio, and time has not changed my opinion!

The Search Is Over.......2007-01-10

This cd contains a lot of tracks that I had been searching for in second hand shops but was told I would never find them by the less than helpful sales staff.The songs were all on this one cd.

Glad to find.......2006-11-10

For a month, XM radio counted down every charting song from the 40's to the present. Quite ambitious, and an incredible listen. I here this song I love, but didn't get the name. A week later I purchase this CD and "Witchi Tai To" is on the CD. Great luck for me. "My Boy Lollipop," "Black is Black," "Tobacco Road" - all great songs. Okay, Lollipop isn't a great song, but it's hilariously fun.

Eric Records Production of Old R&R Tunes.......2006-02-01

This disc provided me with some long sought after tunes from my youth. Typically the disc contains songs I tolerated, a few I never heard of, However, the producers sought to include songs which mean something to many.

Great CD - Very happy with purchase.......2007-07-01

With the exception of 'I Really Love You' (I don't remember this one) I'm happy with the rest of the songs. The only thing they're missing are the hiss and pop of the old 45's. These are from the early 60 and the chart numbers (on the back of the case) show they were all in the top 30, mand 10 or higher. I'm going to wear the grooves out on this CD :-)

I received the 45's On CD Vol 2: 1961-1964, and already looking for more of these lost gems. Some of the songs I had on 45's which had worn with age and use. Now I can have the songs I grew up with forever on CD. Love it!! Bring out more of 'em.

Considered an unprecedented magnum opus when it arrived on two records in May of 1966 (1997's Time out of Mind is actually only about a minute shorter), Blonde on Blonde featured Dylan continuing to demonstrate remarkable powers over the course of 14 new numbers. Working in Nashville with session men and a few conscripted recruits (Al Kooper, Robbie Robertson), Dylan continued to bend minds with his warped lyrics and phrasing. Even dashed-off numbers such as "Obviously 5 Believers" and "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" contribute to the crazed, fun-house ambiance. Dylan will never be this wild again. --Steven Stolder

Great album but you haven't heard it till you heard in mono........2007-06-15

Anything great you can say about this release has already been said so I am going to tackle the audio. I own a vinyl "mono" copy of this album, which was originally mixed under his Bobness' supervision back in 66. A house engineer at Columbia in New York mixed the stereo version. So the mono version is more what Bob intended the record to sound like since then not everybody had stereo players and AM radio was still the king on the block. Now we flash forward to today and the album has been re-mastered for SACD and remixed for SACD surround, which is puzzling to me since the album was recorded at Columbia's Nashville studio on a 3 track machine. How much "immersion" you would get is minimal. Maybe you will hear a little more room ambience but that's about it. The stereo SACD is pretty good but a tad bass heavy. If you have to be state of the art you can't go wrong with these re-issues but if you really want to hear `Blonde On Blonde" or any other of Dylan's albums from the 60's hunt down the Sundazed mono vinyl re-issues. They are taken from the original mono masters which have seen less abuse then the stereo versions so the audio is punchier and more in your face.

A perfect starting point........2007-03-15

I have been listening to dylan for 30 years.He has had good and bad albums throughout his brilliant carrer.One thing to remember about Dylan is that first and foremost he is a poet wraped in a storyteller.My wife hated him because all she ever heard was the same ten songs the radio plays for thirty years of her life.Once she was exposed to his finer works,she was hooked.Granted,he's probably not for everyone but if you realy "listen" to what he plays you will develop a deep understanding and appreciation for all that is Bob Dylan.I would have to say that blood on the tracks is in my opinion his best but this album is a close second and a perfect starting point for"newcomers" to his music.

Double Albums (Even from the Best) Ought To Be Banned .......2007-01-31

OK, this is unbelievably good music. Not Dylan's best, but close to his best. John Wesley Harding remains my favorite. (I never quite understood why Blood on the Tracks often comes up as Dylan's best: taste and lack of musical knowledge, I guess)

Disc 1 is fantastic. 'Stuck Inside of Mobile' could possibly be Dylan's best song. 'Visions of Johanna' is incredibly stylish and cool: Dylan was in some other planet when he recorded this song? 'One of us must know' keeps growing on you and has to be the most listenable song. Memorable lines, great music, and that voice at its best!

Please throw away Disc 2.

This reminds me of that other great double (triple?) disc: Sandinista by Clash. The only difference is that with Dylan, most of the weak efforts seem to be in Disc 2. With Clash, one would have to do a cut-and-paste with more cutting than pasting, and, voila, there would be one of the greatest albums of the last century!

I kept hearing how great Blonde on Blonde is supposed to be. I love Highway 61 Revisited but this... when I purchased it I tried playing it over and over and over again. I kept wondering "when am I going to finally get it?" "why don't I get this?" Sometimes it takes a while for something to sink in. I give up. Finally I must say it. I don't understand what all the fuss is about. I was alive and listening when this stuff first came out and it's ok stuff. I like Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat quite a lot because it's good fun, but the rest of it I can pretty much take it or leave it. Really. Stuck Inside of Mobile has the goofiest lyrics I've ever heard sung over a progression that just plays over and over and over except for the occasional "ah mama could this really be the end?" I wish it could be, but no, there's another verse. Sorry "Well the rag man..." And maybe goofey was the point and I missed it? "Be discovered beneath a truck"? really now.

Sorry Dylan fans, I know this is very shallow of me. You're probably wanting to "stone me" What can I say? I love Subterrainian Homesick Blues, Highway 61 and Time Out of Mind. Four stars because it's Dylan but really, I can do without this one. Ah mama!

Maybe I'll pull it out and try again next year. I'm going back to my Miles Davis records now.

before this i just had the best of bob dylan and hardly ever listened to it, but i was in best buy and saw this cd and decided to take a chance, glad i took that chance, this cd is classic from beginning to end and i reccomend it to all music lovers

I'm a first-time Mom who was looking for a CD both my daughter and I could enjoy. We rec'd this CD at Christmas along with "Buzz Buzz" by Laurie Berkner. This one is my personal favorite. I think I enjoy it as much, if not more than my daughter (who is 1). The songs are addicting and I, like a previous reviewer, find myself singing/humming them even when my daughter is not around. Polly Wolly Doodle and King Kong Kitchie are fabulous! I highly recommend giving this CD a spin. I'm sure my daughter will love it even more when she gets a little older.

Honestly, this CD sucks.......2007-01-18

I was excited to receive this CD because of its great reviews. Once I received it however, I found it barely listenable. My toddler daughter looked and me and said "Off!Off!" and we took it off the CD player after only 10 minutes.

People can make of Raffi all they want, but at least his music is tolerable!

Don't waste your money on this lemon of a CD.

My 2 year old and 1 year old think this CD ROCKS! My son will point to the CD player and cry and whine until I turn it on. From song one they both wiggle, giggle and dance all over. The songs are very folksy, upbeat, and easy to groove too. Get this CD and watch your kids get jiggy wit' it!

rocket ship beach review.......2006-11-10

Rocket Ship Beach was my introduction to Dan Zanes. I have a new son and I was searching for some music we could both enjoy. I found this and thought I would give it a shot. The cd is wonderful. The music is addicting and I find myself driving down the road singing to myself....without my son in the car! Polly Wolly Doodle, the first track, is one of my favorites (and not because I am a Sheryl Crow fan). Another beautiful song is "Hello". This cd is upbeat, fun and yet different from some more typical childrens music. My son really enjoys the different sounds and rhythms on the cd. The cd has a few little introductions where you can hear children, a phone ringing, ect. This cd is sure to put you in a good mood. I highly recommend it! I am actually waiting for another Dan Zanes cd to arrive I liked it so much.

From High School USA to A String of Trumpets, this CD is packed with hit after hit that is geat to listen to all over again. Even those that weren't great hits are blended in at the right spots. If you buy only one of ERIC's Hard To Find 45's on CD (That are still in publication), Buy this one. You won't be disappointed. I haven't heard Philadelphia U.S.A, or High School USA in over 40 years! It's great to hear them anytime I want to now.

Whether due to tracking down original master tapes, or just plain old engineering skill, the tracks on this compilation have a warmth and vibrancy seldom encountered on similar reissues. The audio experience is similar to listening to mint 45s through a great system. If you have any interest at all in the material, don't hestitate to acquire this disc!

They are songs you just don't hear on the radio anymore. Even the weekend specialty shows that for many years featured the great rock 'n roll and doo wop sounds of the 1950's have now largely disappeared from the airwaves. Thankfully, the folks at Eric records have once again come to the rescue with a great new collection featuring an impressive variety of genres from this period. "Hard to Find 45's on CD, Vol. 9: 1957-1959" offers up 23 of the most distinctive and hard to find records of this period. Many of these songs were by artists who were one hit wonders while others were largely regional hits. In any case, this is a collection of songs you just won't find anywhere else.
If you are a big fan of the rockabilly sound you will certainly enjoy hearing Ray Smith's "Rockin' Little Angel" and Carl Mann's pulsating rendition of "Mona Lisa". Those who dig instrumentals can savor the great sound of Dave "Baby" Cortez's #1 hit "The Happy Organ" as well as Santo and Johnny's "Tear Drop" from 1959. It was fun to hear Huey "Piano" Smith and the Clowns classic New Orleans tune "Rockin' Pnuemonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu" which is also included here. Fans of great group harmony will not be disappointed either. You will surely appreciate the lovingly remastered version of The Aquatones great hit "You". One song many people have probably forgotten about is the Four Esquires "Hideaway". If you are a fan of the Four Lads then you are certain to love this one. It is probably my favorite tune on this disc. And there are some songs here that just don't seem to fit into any particular category but are highly enjoyable nonetheless. Among them is the great Art and Dotty Todd recording of "Chanson D'amour" from 1957 and Jody Reynolds Top Ten smash "Endless Sleep". There were also a number of tunes that I had never heard before that turned out to be very pleasant surprises. "Philadelphia USA" by the Nu Tornados features the string band sound while The Bluenotes "I Don't Know What It Is" turns out to be a pretty fair doo wop tune. Also, be sure to check out "String of Trumpets" from the Trumpeteers and Jivin' Gene and the Jokers "Breakin' Up Is Hard Do". Outstanding stuff!
"Hard To Find 45's on CD, Vol. 9: 1957-1959" comes with a fascinating 12 page booklet featuring biographical information and photos on just about all of these artists as well as Billboard chart information on each of these songs. As always the remastering job is first rate. If you have never purchased a collection from Eric before I urge you to give this one a try. Over the past several years this company has emerged as the top reissue label in the U.S. Highly recommended!

The pain of a protracted legal battle with his former manager and the release of being allowed to record again after a three-year layoff are equally apparent from the piercing hard rock and harsh lyrical content of Darkness on the Edge of Town. Betrayal and hard work that comes to naught are the primary subjects on his mind here, evidenced by songs such as "Adam Raised a Cain," "Factory," and "Streets of Fire." Elsewhere, there are signs of hope or at least the possibility of outrunning your problems ("Racing in the Street," "The Promised Land," "Prove It All Night"). But mostly, these are songs about exorcising some serious demons, and from the sound of things, Springsteen's loud, lonesome howl and blistering guitar work went a long way toward making him whole again. A good Rock album, regardless if you are a Springsteen Fan.......2007-07-27

I am not a huge fan of Bruce Springsteen. I think most of his work after "Tunnel of Love" is horrid, yet even if you dont happen to like his music anymore, its really hard not to like the dark and edgy "Darkness on the Edge of Town". This is not a typical Springsteen album, and sure there are some slower paced material with a more "Whiny" Bruce, but this is tolarable, condidering the lyrical content is so strong, and the emotions run high on this album. Even though I am not familer with any of his material after "Tunnel of Love" this is the best of the bunch, and even though "Born to Run" put him on the map, I think this hits harder and it a better album. If you are just a causual fan, this is a great place to start, and even if you arent a fan, this is a great Rock album to have. In fact its better then great, its Outstanding! Five stars to Bruce for this classic. (you also get some great guitar playing from Bruce, with some short but sweet solos, and some decent drumming here, two things that seem to be missing on a lot of Springsteens Work, espically the newer songs that I have heard. I havent heard them all, but what I have heard does not even come close to this) ENJOY

A major letdown.......2007-07-08

This was the album that got me to stop buying Springsteen albums. The first three albums had been great. Born to Run, the album that preceeded this one, was an absolute masterpiece. So I had high hopes when I bought Darkness. They were all dashed.

What happened? You see these reviews here having orgasms about the angry, harsh attitude of the songs. Yay. Notice that nobody talks about the actual *quality* of the music. After there albums where Bruce evidenced great songwriting skill, coming up with wonderful chord progressions, fantastic song structures with unexpected twists, and really showing off his talented band to good effect, on darkness he regresses to simplistic, boring, utterly predictable 3-chord songs. For instance, Badlands: the same ultra-basic 3 chords over and over again, the verse the same as the chorus. Gee Bruce, what'd it take you, 5 whole minutes to think up that one? And THAT song is one of the better on the album! (at least the tune is catchy). There's a few songs which are ok, most are pretty forgettable.

And as for the arrangements and the use of the band, one statistic speaks volumes: Clarence Clemon's magnificent saxaphone plays for about 24 bars *on the whole album* (three short little 8 bar solos, and that's it!).

I love the darkness here..........2007-04-27

This is my favorite Springsteen album. I play it quite often, and the songs are equally angry, sad, poetic, and haunted. Badlands, the title track, and Adam Raised a Cain are brutal and brilliant. Adam especially is a really scorching track. Racing in the Street is one of Bruce's most despairing songs, but it's still quite moving. You can really feel the desperation of the characters in the song. Even the lesser tracks like Factory (a song I like a lot) have a world weariness and power to them that most artists today can't even come close too. The Promised Land is another great Bruce anthem, one of his greatest songs. The cover is really something. It looks like Bruce just woke up, and you have to give him credit for making himself look so average. Most rockers wouldn't do that, because they're so obsessed with their image. I think this is Bruce's best work.

springsteen's 1973-1978 years were an amazing run, almost as great as the rolling stones 1968-1972 years. each album that he released in this stretch of time was fantastic. "darkness on the edge of town" is his starkest production from that era. a masterpiece that is intense and dramatic, with a big drum and bass sound, and several of the finest songs in our rock and roll canon. "badlands," "the promised land," "prove it all night," and the title track are all powerful, heavenly rock performances. "adam raised a cain," "something in the night," and "streets of fire," may be less known, perhaps less lauded, but are each great in their own right. the lyrical guitar solo and sax solo on "promised land" are both gorgeous; and the raw, wild telecaster sound of the solo on "streets of fire" is soul-stirring. bruce's voice is uninhibated, soars with emotion and drama, and is tremendous throughout. johnny cash. bob dylan. bruce springsteen: my trio of homegrown american voices that are indispensable (if you want to make it a quartet and throw in billy joe shaver, i won't argue). your life will seem vaguely empty without lots of music from these gentlemen around the house.

A masterpiece from the Boss.......2007-03-21

Perhaps the best album of the 70's. There is no filler on this album. It's quintessential Bruce from start to finish.

Another great additon to the HTF45's series.......2007-07-27

This one is a very good addition to the Hard To Find 45's series from ERIC. Sure there are serveral on this one that can be found on other CD series (I own all 4 Teenage Crush CD's) but that doesn't diminish the listening enjoyment of this one. Those that are on other CD's are still great to listen to mixed-in with those that are new to the series. The song that led me to buy this CD is She's about a mover, Sir Douglas Quintet in stereo. I have this song in mono on another CD and think the stereo effect makes this song even more enjoyable. But others on this release that are worth getting it for are; Mission Bell (original version), Donnie Brooks, and If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody, James Ray (I haven't found this on anywhere else). Jerry Wallace's There She Goes in stereo is one I had forgotten about and enjoyed hearing it after all these years. Cherry Pie, Skip and Flip seems to sound much clearer on this CD than it does on others I have. In fact all the songs on this one come through with great clearity. The blend of songs on this one is also very well done, just as it is on VOL 9. All in all this is a good CD. If you don't have another series that have some of the same songs, GET THIS ONE. You'll enjoy it.

Wrong classic songs.......2007-07-16

My maternal language is spanish, but when I hear this hard to find 45 rpm, Vol. 10, the first song is "Venus in blue jeans" of Jimmy Clanton, "Sacred" of Castells, "Enamorado", "Sugar pye", Etc, Etc, The another songs are for me unknow, but they are totally different that listed in this CD. Mistakes are a quality of humans.

Awesome......As Always!!!!!!!.......2007-06-27

Eric Records has done it again!!!! Volume 10 of the Hard to Find 45's series just might be the best one so far!!! So many rare gems like "Roses are Red My Love" by the You Know Who Group, "If You Gotta Make a Fool of Somebody" by James Ray, the stereo mix of "She's About A Mover" by the Sir Douglas Quintet and "Ruby Duby Du" by Tobin Mathews and Co. All I've got to do now is pick up Vol. 9 and I'll be set!

Not as good as the others.......2007-06-27

Everytime it's probably more difficult to come up with follow-ups in
long series and still try be a 5 star CD. This Eric series has been
first class all over but this latest edition (Vol. 10) does not hold
"rare" or hard to get songs. Most of these can be found on ACE's
wonderful TEENAGE CRUSH series. There are only a few highlights like
Jerry Wallace (Ther She Goes) and Barry Young (One Has My Name...)
but the rest has been released before on other 50's & 60's compilations.

Welcome back, "Hard To Find 45's on CD"!.......2007-06-12

With the declining sales and profitibility of music on CD, the mega-music companies that hold the rights to much of early and classic rock music are less and less interested in offering product of all but the most well-known and expectedly financially advantageous music from rock music's genesis. Disappointingly, even some of the independents that used to feed the die-hard fans and collectors have pulled in the reins on dredging up and reissuing the long-lost tunes that once were the staple of a.m. radio. While there may be technical issues with getting some of this remaining music on CD in quality form, thankfully there are still a few companies that satisfy the salivating collectors. After a five-year hiatus, Eric Records, the big little reissue company, sends two more volumes of its extraordinary "Hard To Find 45's on CD" roaring into the marketplace. This volume, tenth in the series, serves up a generous 24 tracks with nearly half of them making their CD debut. Among these virgin-to-CD tracks are Barry Young's Dean Martinesque "One Has My Name", Andrea Carroll's "It Hurts To Be Sixteen" and "Roses Are Red My Love from the "You Know Who Group". So the claim made a few years back by one of the then most notable reissue companies that virtually everything of that era worth reissuing was already out there, just wasn't, and still isn't, true. Beyond the appearance of new-to-CD tracks, adding to the appeal of this collection are tunes seldom found elsewhere on CD, and almost certainly, not of this quality. Notable in this category are Dale and Grace's follow-up hit "Stop and Think It Over" and "Talk To Me" from Sunny and the Sunglows. The revelations don't stop here either, as there are the stereo debut of Sir Douglas Quintet's "She's About A Mover" and the original versions of Donnie Brooks' "Mission Bell", Jerry Wallace's "There She Goes" and Adam Wade's "Take Good Care of Her". When all is said and done, this CD is jam-packed with goodies to satiate both the seasoned collector and casual listener. In keeping with Eric Records' usual high standards, the 12-page liner notes booklet contains backround info on each of the included acts and all the tracks are very clean sounding with many in stereo (tracks 2,8,10-12,14,22-24 in particular). While some have been lifted from vinyl, considerable effort has gone into presenting them in their best possible sonic state. If any fault must be found, there is an error in the liner notes regarding Dale and Grace. The duo of Jimmy Dale Gordon and Grace Sattenfield referred to here are not the Dale Houston and Grace Broussard that recorded in the early 60's. This "reinvented" Dale and Grace that run the D & G Ministries have hijacked the original duo's moniker and, while not claiming to be the original artists, capitalize on the confusion it causes. But as far as this CD is concerned, one is hard-pressed to find a better executed "oldies" collection (but there is still volume nine in this series to be considered!). Bravo to Eric! And with apologies to Andrea True, "More, More, More"!
