Full speed ahead!.......2006-08-09
the GEARS weren't originators of the LA scene(the WEIRDOS & the GERMS came earlier) but their sound epitomizes the late '70's Southern Cal.the way the Beach Boys did in the burgeoning '60's.
This is powerful hooky & unpretentious, lots of ripping guitars & a very good production job,the sound is still as fresh today than it was when the LP was issued(the engineer,Noah Shark used to work with such luminaries as Tom Petty or Dwight Twilley,it sounds perfect for the band!).
The only other band they remind me of is the FLYBOYS,from O.C,who cut a sublime mini LP ,in a similar mould,at the same time.
A Lost Treasure From The Great L.A. Underground.......2004-06-06
Going back after 20+ years and listening to the bands you grew up with can be a risky proposition. A lot of things that sounded great when you were in high school sound dated, or worse, in cool light of retrospect. The Gears' high-energy blend of punk and rockabilly, however, may sound even better than I remembered it. Imagine the illigitimate offspring of the Crowd and the Blasters: tight, frantic beats, crisp punk-a-billy guitar hooks from Kid Spike, and vocals that alternate between earnest and amused from Axxel. With all the aging punk bands treading the county fair circuit these days, I'd actually pay to see these guys crank it up one more time. "If it wasn't for this kind of music, you wouldn't have come to this place." 'Nuff said.
One of the very best.......2003-10-28
It might be because the original release of "Rockin' at Ground Zero" was limited to something like 2000 copies, or the fact that The Gears came along a bit later than the first wave of California punk bands, but, for whatever reason, this band and this album have never received the acclaim and recognition they deserve. Sure, alot of diehard punk fans know about the Gears, but I think that this album ranks up there with the likes of "Los Angeles" "GI" "Damaged" and "Group Sex". One of the best things about this album is that it is fun. Yes, punk can be fun, lighthearted even, and still have energy and attitude. I treasure my original LP copy with the red cover, but this reissue is cool because it also features The Gears' first 7" with the band's original guitarist, Crazy Reuben. Add this one to your collection!
Best cd in the USA.......2003-04-11
Well I just want to say this cd is great there are too many good songs on this cd and my band the RETOIDS covers lets go to the beach and I can make my voice soung like the lead singers
GREAT MEMORIES.......2001-08-02
I'll probably be considered biased because the lead singer of the Gears, Axxel G. Reese is my big brother but I love this CD. It's been a while since I listened to it but, when I came across the CD on this web-site, I listened to the tracks again and remembered why I loved them so much. My favorites are "Baby Run Around" and "Heartbeat Baby". All the tracks on the CD have great energy and the lyrics range from harsh, "Baby Run Around don't come home at night no more...." to fun and carefree, "Grab a girl, go for a whirl, head on down to the beach".
As a teenager, I used to go see my brother perform at clubs like The Troubador and The Whisky and it was always such a thrill to see him up on stage. It still is! I love watching the audience's reaction to his music. I've seen my brother perform live many times with The Gears and with his other bands and he always brings so much energy and excitement to the music. The Gears captured that same energy on this CD.

The Doppler Effect is an Awesome Phenomena.......2005-10-15
This album is just simply excellent. The only thing that surpasses the truly amazing instrumental rock performances of Doppler on Guitar,Atma Anur on Drums and Jason Muscat on Bass is the compositions themselves.12 great tracks-my favorites are Self-Portrait,Radio,Illuminations,Yana's Song and Tempest.Doppler is able to articulate lines like Jeff Beck, yet his solos absolutely scream like Vai and Satriani. This album is just too cool.Atmar Anur is an extremely powerful drummer and he actually drives the entire album-he's got great timing and chops out the Wazoo. This is quite simply one of the best and most surprising instrumental rock albums I heard in the 90's.
IF YOU LIKE JOE SATRIANI, YOUR GOING TO LOVE DOUG DOPPLER!!!.......1999-06-13
THIS IS MY FAVORITE INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM OF ALL TIME AND ONE OF MY FAVORITE CDS TO POP-IN WHEN I AM DRIVING. E-V-E-R-Y SONG ON THIS CD IS GREAT! SONGS LIKE "RADIO", "VALLEY OF THE MOON", "OBJECT TO BE DESTROYED", "TEMPEST" AND "YANA'S SONG" ARE AMONG MY FAVORITES, BUT THEIR ARE NO DULL MOMENTS HERE WHATSOEVER! HE EVEN DOES AN INSTRUMENTAL VERSION OF THE ROLLING STONES' "BEAST OF BURDEN" WHICH IS A LOT MORE INTERESTING THAN THE ORIGINAL SONG! THERE IS NO DENYING THAT DOUG DOPPLER'S PLAYING ABILITY WILL CAPTIVATE YOU FROM THE FIRST TUNE, BUT THIS ALBUM GOES FAR BEYOND JUST SHEER PLAYING ABILITY! HIS ABILITY TO WRITE INTERESTING INSTRUMENTAL COMPOSITIONS IS AS GOOD OR BETTER THAN JOE SATRIANI AND THAT IS SAYING A LOT! HE TEACHES GUITAR IN BERKELEY, AND I ACTUALLY HAD THE LUXURY OF TAKING A FEW LESSONS FROM HIM, BUT COULDN'T CONTINUE BECAUSE THE DRIVE WAS OVER AN HOUR. REAL GENUINE GUY AND TOP-NOTCH MUSICIAN - THIS CD IS FAR UNDERRATED AND THE ONLY THING I CAN FIGURE OUT IS THAT IS WASN'T MARKETED VERY WELL, SO A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT WOULD'VE LIKED IT NEVER HEARD ANYTHING OFF OF IT - TAKE MY WORD THOUGH, THIS IS GOOD STUFF "MAYNARD!!!"

Be Warned.......2005-07-16
This is the most painfull listen I have ever experienced. I want anyone who may be thinking about buying this CD to know that the Korean Horn sample is played repeatedly for the entire duration of the track. This music reminds me of how I feel when my thought process is at it worst.
one of the best albums ever.......2005-06-21
I would put this in my top 10 (maybe my top 5?) albums of all time. Certainly, my favorite Otomo Yoshihide album. For half the album, you just hear this wailing flute-ish middle-eastern sounding sample that pulses between the two speakers. You fall into a trance. Then, at the halfway mark, all these instruments come in and it's like nothing you've ever heard. I once heard a story that I'm pretty sure is wrong:
After this performance the band decided to break up because they thought they could never play anything as good as that again.
This is probably not true, but you'd think it was from the music.
This is the first of his albums I've listened to, but still my favorite. If you like Miles Electric, NoWave/Noise, freejazz, I.D.M., experimental or other odd music, YOU WILL LIke this.
Ornette Coleman and Lightning Bolt got married, and this was their child.

Full Stop.......2005-02-01
Can't think of a more sustained period of tension in any piece of music than the opening "duck call" samples. You know the storm's coming. There's the odd thunder-crack of turntable wreckage as the air thickens and thickens. Heaven and hell break loose. Staggering stuff.
Feels like drinking lava and mercury for 40 minutes. Through a straw.
Amazing.......2004-01-27
I would agree with the other reviewer that this is simply one of the greatest pieces of music ever. A review can really not justly describe the strange yet awe-inspiring piece of music that is Consume Red. Even if you do not usually delve into experimental music, this will convert you into the wonderful musical world of Otomo Yoshihide and others.
WOW........1998-06-17
The best album of the year, of the decade, of ever. The sample of Korean horn player Kim Suk Chul is awe-inspiring, and Ground Zero constucts an epic-length piece around this ear-shattering sound.

Imagine Redd Foxx with a dirtier mind and a cleaner mouth, and you've got a bead on Bobby Rush. The energetic Jackson, Mississippi-based entertainer has been the King of the Chitlin Circuit for years. It's a title he's won with vaudevillian instincts, horny showmanship, spot-on ability as a singer, harpman, guitarist, and bandleader, and a knack for writing tunes that brim with playful down-home wit. This set captures the astonishingly youthful and vigorous Rush in concert for the first time in his 50-year career, strutting like a peacock with his bevy of booty-shaking dancers through crowd-pleasers like the lusty "You, You, You" and hits like the double-entendre laden sexual plea "Chicken Heads." Both discs--one a DVD of this show recorded at the Clarksdale, Mississippi club Ground Zero, the other a music-only CD--cover a strong 11-song set. The music disc has two bonus tracks: the Rush favorites "Sue," a playful tale of sexual initiation, and "That Thang," a slinky funk update of Willie Dixon's classic "Same Thing." If you've never seen Rush's singular and engaging stage shtick live, there's now no excuse. --Ted Drozdowski

'Rush' to order.......2004-03-03
I too first saw Bobby Rush in the PBS series last year, having only heard his name but not his music. His segment was so poignant that I had to get my hands on some of his work. I bought 'Live at Ground Zero' from Amazon last month, and recommend it without reservation. He is an amazing showman, with great soulful vocals, fantastic harp blowing, and some funky guitar licks. He has a fantastic, tight band and you must see his dancers!
Live at Ground Zero.......2004-02-24
I first saw Bobby Rush on the PBS special on Memphis Blues. If you liked him there, your going to love him here. It was fantastic!! The music was great, starting with SHE'S SO Fine, going through EVIL, 99, many more good ones, and my favorite, Chicken Heads. Bobby can bend those strings!!!
The band was GREAT, the girls were FANTASTIC, and Bobby was full of energy, giving it all he's got. This DVD at Live Ground Zero is a must have, for anyone who likes the Blues and a good time on stage. And the finaly was something special. I am definitely a BOBBY RUSH FAN!!!!!!
Live at Ground Zero.......2003-10-29
This is a killer dvd that accurately shows what goes on at a Bobby Rush show. Bobby has done the world a public service by releasing this dvd and cd. It is a definate bargain, and I strongly recommend it for all blues fans. Get your copy now, while you can.
Bobby Rush: An American Original?.......2003-10-18
Bobby Rush's Live At Ground Zero has a collection of all original tunes performed at a club in Mississippi. Mr. Rush delivers a muti-dimensional show that could lift the spirits of a dead man. The DVD companion is a must see: Mr. Rush compliments his musical and singing talents with an ensemble of beautifal dancers whom bring-to-life the stories in Bobby's songs. These songs' messages manage to lift spirits despite the worst circumstances that life offers, in a unique and genuine way. Bobby Rush's originality transcends geographic boundries, he is simply without parallel.

HELLRAZA a.k.a Kamilion is on the come up. All the tracks on this album are hot, but "living in the last dayz" is one of the best songs i've heard since Pac's death. The beat is also what stands out in this track, and Mil shows the world just how much of an influence Pac had on him. Outlawz feature on alot of tracks, including older brother Napoleon. Get this album, if your into rap, not just the lawz. Hellraza shines in his first release, and shows you that he's another OUTLAW on the rise!!!!

This 10 song cd can hardly be compared to the hefty 2-cd 35-song set Fishbone 101: Nuttasaurusmeg Fossil Fuelin. Unlike Fishbone 101, this cd gives you the hits without the alternate takes and B-sides, so it may be slightly more efficient if one has a desire to have only the familiar Fishbone songs without the price of a 2 cd set.

If you like Ground Zero, you should check out his work in Microcosmo, too. Microcosmos is not as rocking as Ground Zero, but they make beautifully brutal music.
Wonderful, wonderful noise.......1998-06-17

The second release from fledgling Shakti Records (an ambient/rhythmic division of Narada), Ground Zero is an intriguing compilation project of 11 groove-inclined tracks that each feature some type of odd or exotic spin. The assorted acts (DHOL Foundation, Juno Reactor, Transglobal Underground, et al.) often make use of Indian or Arabic influences in their electronic mixes, ranging from the slightly warped sitar in "Throw Down" from the Ananda Shankar Experience to the ethereal female wails and pulsing undercurrents that make "Fingers," by Joi, one of the disc's most involving tracks. At times more cerebral than overtly danceable (the haunting "Songs for Ancestors" from Juno Reactor, for instance), Ground Zero could appeal to Enigma/Deep Forest listeners who possess a more serious interest in world rhythms and instrumentation. The DHOL contribution, "Shin the Mechanic," is a previously unreleased track. --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
East meets west.......2004-07-24
I love world music. I have always loved listening to music that comes from other countries. I especially love it when traditional world music meets modern, western music like techno to fuse together into one sound. The results is a non-traditional form of dance music. I came across "Ground Zero" tonight when I was looking for some music that I hadn't reviewed here. Due to my extensive cd collection, I haven't listened to "Ground Zero" in a couple of years (and now I am right now). "Ground Zero" is a compilation of Asian music remixed some of today's hottest djs to produce a new type of dance music. The results are absolutely amazing. The cd kicks off with the funky dance track "Fingers" by an Indian artist named Joi. The melodies are traditional Indian music but the dance beats are modern dance beats. The next track takes the mood down a notch with the ambient track "Easy Muffin" by Amon Tobin. It is one of my personal favorite songs on the cd. The beat picks up a bit with "Throw Down" by Ananda Shankar Experience and State of Bengal. Reminds me of Talvin Singh with the Indian-influence drum & bass vibe of the song. "Sweet Pain" by the late and great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Michael Brook sends chills down my spine. This song would be perfect for the Buddha Bar/Siddharta series, especially the Siddharta series. Can't go wrong with "Rise" by Craig Armstrong. I have always loved his music. Overall this is a great cd of Asian-influenced dance music. There was not one single song on this cd that I did not like. "Ground Zero" is a great compilation for fans of dance music looking for something different outside the box in the realm of dance music.
Now this is what I want to hear in World Dance Music !.......2000-10-31
This compilation features some of the best World Dance Music I've heard in a long time. It also offers that advantage only found on compilations--if you don't like one particular artist, the next cut will be by someone different. This CD offers a great introduction to some of the leading artists producing Indian fusion jazz/dance music--such as Amon Tobin, dj Cheb i Sabbah and the Aranda Shankar Experience. Each cut is different, but the compilation is crafted such that the pieces flow one into the other, and keep an interesting continuity throughout the entire CD. The music is not quiet, yet it is not so aggressive that you begin to twitch after a while. The musicians are all masters, and the level of playing is superb. I highly recommend this CD as a great introduction to Indian Fusion music, and as a real keeper for your "make me feel good" collection.
World music never sounded so good........2000-10-11
I was just listening to the songs on various CDs in my local music store. When I came across this CD I started listening to the songs one by one. The instant I heard song number 5 ("Shin The Mechanic"), I just knew I had to have this CD. I have always looked for a song that was dance and techno in one. This song is the best one, of this type, I have heard so far. It has been featured in many movies including James Bond. So if you liked the music you heard in James Bond you will love this song. I certainly do not regret my purchase.
