4 out of 5 stars Don "Not Retired Anymore" Dixon.......2006-12-06

I too live in suburban Washington, and have seen Dixon nearly every time he's played here (9:30 Club, Birchmere, Lisner Auditorium, even the Rams Head in Annapolis). It was Weasel who introduced the show referenced above. Also, the FM station referred to above had just moved to 99.1 from 102.3 when Dixon's record on Enigma was released (Most of the Girls LTD). Enough with the pointless flashbacks. Didn't anyone read the liner notes on this CD? Dixon states that he had basically given up on song writing, lyrics in particular. He got sucked into it by his 'middle daughter', who needed something for a dance school performance. He sent her in with some acoustic stuff without lyrics, only to find out that the instructor wanted things like "Southside Girl", much to his dismay. So he went back and wrote most of which became this album. Yes, there is a concept here (rooms), but the material is all quite good. And the inclusion of Mitch Easter's "Room With A View", sung by Marti, was an unexpected surprise. Easter and Dixon have worked together for years, and in fact, Easter appears on this record. Dixon has always, at least to me, appeared like North Carolina's version of Nick Lowe, even down to being a bass player. His lyrics are crisp, sometimes gloomy, but always carrying a hint of sardonic irony. This album seems a bit melancholy, but is still enjoyable. It's good to see Dixon back on the scene. If you're a Dixon fan, you'll enjoy it. Or should, anyway.

4 out of 5 stars The Entire Combustible Dixon.......2006-07-09

For the last several decades there have been an ever increasing amount of things to love about Don Dixon. As life has pushed, pulled, ebbed and flowed Mr. Dixon's life, it has always created in its wake insightful, interesting and enjoyable music. The Entire Combustible World In One Small Room is no exception.
From the first track `In Darkness Found' there is a tone of cool, wit, and style that is uniquely Don Dixon. He has the ability to line up the moon and stars in a way that makes you want to put on the headphones and just drink it all in.
The fact of the matter is that Don Dixon knows how to make cool records. Cool in the sense that if you take the 43 minutes and 20 seconds to listen to the whole record you feel like you taken an interesting little trip or spent some time with an old friend.
There's no stinkers and on the 2nd listen, standouts are In Darkness Found, Secret Room, In A Politician's Bed and Ten Part Peal.
If you are someone who is persuaded by reviews, pull the trigger on this one.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome back Don Dixon.......2006-06-20

As a long time fan of both Don Dixon and his beautiful bride, Marti Jones, I welcomed the sight of this new release from Don Dixon. I discovered Don Dixon and Marti Jones during the mid 80s by hearing their songs on a local radio station (WHFS 99.1 FM in Maryland). The DJs on WHFS, Weasel (aka Jonathan Gilbert) and Damien Einstein would play cuts from Marti Jones' "Unsophisticated Time" A&M records LP and Don Dixon's "All of the Girls..." indie release(s). Does anyone remember "Praying Mantis" or "Follow You All Over the World"? I still own those two cherished vinyl records!

I had the pleasure of seeing Don and Marti at the old 9:30 club in downtown DC in the summer of 1986. What a show! Don and Marti played all their great songs from the aforementioned LPs. Quite a show and I believe either the WHFS DJ Weasel or DJ Damien did the introductions to the show....can't remember which one...oh well, had a great time at the show.

So, enough of the history of Marti and Don's airplay and concerts in the Washington DC area...what about this new CD? I like it very much. The CD has a theme all about various rooms (a church, a dorm, an ICU, etc.) and works very well from a conceptual standpoint. Don's lyrics/singing and the arrangements/production conjure up a different feeling for each song (room).

Don's soulful singing voice has aged well and he appears to enjoy singing these songs! Marti Jones also sounds great on the final cut (a cover) singing Let's Active's "Room With a View."

Welcome back Don Dixon! Hope to see Don in the Washington DC area if he tours to support the new CD.

I highly recommend this CD

Reissues of vintage bachelor pad music are hip these days, but you'll need to check in here for a contemporary take on martini madness. Produced by Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh, Combustible Edison have cut 26 tracks of rhythmic, bewitching, space-age whimsy. --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is great!.......2004-06-24

One of the best soundtracks ever! Cocktail and Lounge music performed by Combustible Edison, except two songs, Sentimental Journey and Harlem Nocturne, are performed by Esquivel (compose, arranger, stereo sound pioneer from 50's and 60's). It makes you wanna dance!

2 out of 5 stars Beware! That's not a hillarious "Pulp Fiction" mix!.......1999-09-22

This disk is not so bad , but it's not good eather. Maybe I'm too picky, but I liked only "Vertigogo" tracks on it. The reat are just boring. If you're looking for the same hillarious Tarantino's blend as "Pulp fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs" were stay away from this one. It's "quite almost exactly" not what are you looking for.

5 out of 5 stars It Gets You Going.......1999-06-02

This CD is just the best. The movie was not that impressive, but the music put that thought aside. The tunes are full of beat and make you feel like dancing. I believe that it is one of the greatest CDs ever!

5 out of 5 stars Oh ya.......1999-03-19

I never saw the movie but the music is just fantastic! It makes you want to sing along, even if they aren't saying words

5 out of 5 stars WOW! What a great soundtrack!!!.......1998-08-30

This CD, like many of the other soundtracks created and pieced together by Quentin Tarantino (one of the coolest people on earth!), is distinctive, awesome, contains wonderful examples of vocal jazz and lounge singing, and to top it off, makes an art of martinis! This CD rocks, and Combustible Edison and their distinctive style shine through in every track they mixed.

3 out of 5 stars LOSE THE SINGER AND YOU'D HAVE A GREAT INSTRUMENTAL COMBO..........2006-06-09

... this was a pretty cool lounge recording to listen to, although I don't think the lead singer's proper and prissy voice really fits in with their twangy retro sound ("Miss Lilly Banquette" would fit in better with a more pretentious outfit such as De-Phazz... her style is very much like Supreme Beings of Leisure's singer, although not as bitchy-sounding)... but ditch the singer altogether and you'd have something terrific here - this band was meant to be instrumental.

4 out of 5 stars A pretty good CD.......2005-09-08

This Cd has the perfect combination of slow-easy listening songs, to upbeat music you'll tap your foot to. I first heard of Spy vs Spy while watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and thats what made me want the CD. It would be a good CD to add to any music collection, and a great CD to play while your at home having a few drinks with some friends.

4 out of 5 stars Be a swinger, if you dare!.......2005-08-25

Combustible Edison were at the forefront of the "lounge music" revival of the 1990s. This was their wonderful first album. It is mostly instrumental, with a few vocals by chanteuse Miss Lily Banquette. It is a throwback to an earlier era, with a modern twist. It's a lot of fun, and if you are a fan of lounge music, I'm sure you will enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable lounge/swing music.......2003-12-21

This record amazed me. This is the kind of music you can hear on Pulp fiction's soundtrack. The instrumentation is briliant, retracing the atmosphere of the sixties. Keyboards, drums and vibraphone are all played fantastically. Vocals are cabaret-ish, not impressive but very pleasant. There's a Zappa influence in the music, but overall this is pure lounge music, a blend of jazz with cabaret. You can compare it to Pink Martini for example. Tracks 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12 are all very good, the others are weaker.

5 out of 5 stars Real Good.......2001-07-13

With feminine vocals in some of the music, lot's of key boards. Sophisticated & fun.

You have to hand it to Combustible Edison. Obviously aware that the zoot suit and martini fad is winding its way down, the Rhode Island-based five-piece has slightly revamped its sound. Could it be...electronica? Not quite. The carbons of cocktail cacophony have subsided, and their old sound is now a departure point for headier potions that incorporate--you got it--keyboards and samples, but this hardly sounds like Madonna's Ray of Light. Tracks like "Utopia" and the pulsating "Laura's Aura" benefit from the electronic tweaking of producers John Holbrook and Scanner; their subtle new-meets-old approach glides in under Miss Lily Banquette's vocals and keeps the mix buoyant. On other tracks, such as "Mr. Pushkin Came to Shove," CE take a straight-jazz tack to impressively solid results. The Impossible World is proof that Combustible Edison have slipped free of the novelty noose and made strides toward new possibilities in old sounds. --Jason Josephes

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Tickle me until I die........2006-08-13

Combustible Edison were at the forefront of the lounge music revival of the 1990s. This was their last album, barring a reunion. It features their trademark swinging sound, slightly updated with the occasional sample. I regret that I never got to see the group in concert.

4 out of 5 stars Bewitching.......2005-04-21

From the droning opening of "Utopia," Combustible Edison's "The Impossible World" announces itself as lounge music for the jetset. "20th Century" could be a soundtrack for a montage sequence from a 60s sitcom like "Bewitched" with its bright perky off-center instrumental with xylophone & loopy keyboards. Miss Lily Banquette croons like a Secret Agent theme for depressives on "Pink Victim." "Hot & Bothered" is delightfully horny beach music complete with squeals and sighs. The wispy "Seduction" comes across like a romance between ghosts. "The Garden of Earthly Delights" sounds like a gondola cruise in Venice with its airy female vocals. "The Impossible World" might not be the greatest CD on the planet, but it is tremendously original and a lot of fun! Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Who are Combustible Edison...?.......1999-08-10

This is a fine CD, particularly as background music during sex...trust me on that one. However, there is a little known fact that I feel obliged to share with all the young'ns out there...many years prior to the advent of Combustible Edison, "Ms. Lily Banquette" (real name: Liz Cox) and "The Millionnaire" (real name: Michael Cudahy) comprised a band called Christmas, who were one of my all-time favorite bands, "alternative" long before the term alternative became a parody of itself. They put out 3 records, two of which are out of print and VERY hard to find (I should know...it took me approximately 3 and 5 years, respectively, of constant searching to obtain them). However, "Vortex" by Christmas is still available on Matador Records and I highly recommend that anyone who digs C.E. buy some material by Christmas, because it is worlds better and more interesting (and not "swing/lounge" crap, either) than Combustible Edison.

3 out of 5 stars DON'T GET MISLEADED.......1999-07-26

Only tree stars, gentlemen. For me their first album is still the best. IMPOSSIBLE WORLD is too quirky, too complicated and ... well, less innovative than you could expect from ComEd. Flirting with new modern sounds made a small contribution to the album, sometimes it gets boring. Though the work of high quality I'd stick to elder ones.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......1999-01-26

Listening to this album from start to finish is truly an adventure. It is quite simply a stunning effort and heads above the rest of those jazz lounge wannabees. It feels like Stereolab having cocktails with the Jetsons.

3 out of 5 stars Hey, hey, Lily!.......2005-10-22

This was Combustible Edison second or third album, depending on if you count the Four Rooms soundtrack or not. It is somewhat of a disappointment. Not to say that it's bad. It's good, but not to the standards of their wonderful first album. Still, fans of the lounge music revival of the 1990s will probably enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Schizophonic travel through time.......2003-08-19

This was the first CE record I bought and I find it in many ways the best CE record. There are no weak tracks and the best ones are absolutely hilarious. Solid State and Short Double Latte are my favorites. If you want to travel back in time to the sunny days of your childhood or you want to get a glimpse of the carefree past or just happen to like the sweet nonsense of lounge music, I recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites.......2003-08-14

This cd never fails to pick me up when I've got da blues...The over-all feel is breezy and light yet the musicianship is excellent. Top notch sound quality. Most tracks are instrumental lounge which is fine, though I wouldn't mind hearing a few more vocal tracks sung by Miss Lily Banquette -chanteuse extrordinaire. The masterpiece, of course, is Morticia making fine use of the harpsicord and well placed 'la la la la's'. Alright already reminds me a little of the Odd Couple theme on tv, and Solid State sounds like a cocktail party on a satellite orbiting Mars. I think this is every bit as good as I Swinger and I can't understand why other reviewers think otherwise. I only wish it wasn't so short. Combustible Edison came out of the lounge resurgence of the mid-90's but there was something very original and creative about their music. Positive fun. Impossible world was released sometime in '98 and that's the last I've heard from them. To bad...I'd really like to hear more!

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!.......2003-04-19

This is the best Combustible Edison CD. "Solid State" is my favorite tune, a deliriously infectious song that I have loved since the first time that I heard it last November."52" and "Alright, Already" help make this one of the finest pop albums of all time.

2 out of 5 stars Retro Lounge Music.......2002-10-18

I'm not a fan of this style of music, but I've found that most modern renditions of classic music styles tends to sound unoriginal and stylized almost into a caricature of the original style, overemphasizing the obvious features of that style.

I tend to laugh at this album because it seems like a parody of the 60's. There's not much original content here, and the album is only good for a couple of listens. There's much better stuff out there. You can still get original recordings of 60's music.
