Now in its fifth decade, the James Bond film series has outlived the Cold War concerns that spawned it--not to mention the acting careers of a Sean Connery replacement or three. Indeed, its musical sensibility has often been the cycle's most reliable artistic link across the decades. While the arrival of latest Bond Daniel Craig inspired the producers to forge a long-overdue prequel plot gambit ("How Bond became Bond") for their Casino Royale redux, composer David Arnold's fourth Bond score helps bridge the past while subtly pushing it ever forward. The album's absence of a pop-song title single (though the melody of the Arnold/Chris Cornell-composed "You Know My Name" is interpolated into the underscore) isn't terribly shocking, considering the waning fortunes of recent efforts in the genre. But other traditions continue, with the full-bodied score here subtly infusing the elegant spirit of original Bond maestro John Barry into Arnold's own mix of brooding tension-builders and the dynamic, brassy rhythms of his signature action cues. The latter even gingerly cross over into the synth-charged club milieu of Eric Serra's GoldenEye score, a sensibility that was reviled as sacrilege by Bond aficionados a decade ago but that's since become a staple of mainstream film scoring. Arnold brings it all full circle with the muscular coda "The Name's Bond...," a lovingly authentic, barely revamped workout of the epochal Barry/Monty Norman theme that anchors the series to glories past. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Best song compilation soundtrack out there. Period........2004-12-13
A stylish movie gets a stylish soundtrack, and while some tunes are missing from this soundtrack, one has to commend the creators of this OST for putting 31 beautiful songs, capping an almost 2 hour listen. It does cost about double the price of regular soundtracks but it's worth every penny.
With Louis Prima, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Fleetwood Mac, Harry Nilsson, B.B. King, Otis Redding and many many other great artists of the golden years, one can have timeless joy every time this compilation goes in the CD player.
While it is a bit pricey, it is thoroughly recommended to anyone who can enjoy some good old jazz and rock & roll. Simply a wonderful collection of songs.

Steven Spielberg veered from the futuristic sci-fi flirtations of A.I. and Minority Report with this brisk, stylish period take on the career of teen con-man extraordinaire Frank Abagnale (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his dogged G-man pursuer/de facto extended family member Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks). As always, the director's musical collaborator is John Williams, and the scoring legend uses the occasion of their 20th collaboration as a rewarding musical journey back to the days when he was known as Johnny Williams, ambitious young pianist for Henry Mancini on such early jazz scores as Peter Gunn. Informed by a half-century of subsequent achievement, Williams's return to the jazz idiom of his youth yields a smart, nervous score that evokes more than mere nostalgia. But with Dan Higgins's moody sax often leading the way, the veteran composer's work here seems more evocative reinvention than revisitation, yet another tribute to his uncanny ability to make any idiom his own. A handful of pop standards (including Sinatra's "Come Fly with Me," Getz and Gilberto's "Girl from Ipanema," "The Christmas Song" by Nat "King" Cole) deftly color both period and plot, but, as always, it's Williams who provides Spielberg's masterful imagery with its musical life's blood. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Johnny's "Lost in Soundtrack".......2006-08-25
Once I discovered it was done by John Williams, things started to click. The arrangement and themes actually go back way before he was famous. Back to an era he may not want you to remember. Back when he was known simply as "Johnny" Williams.
First, notice the melody and pace of the creeping marimbas and bubbling flutes. Next, catch a repeat of the old Sci-Fi, TV Fairy-Tale known as "LOST IN SPACE." Listen for the incidental, suspense-scene music throughout. Did you catch the composer's name in the credits?
Bingo!(and still very cool)!
Excellent Mix of Jazz and Emotion.......2006-02-20
John Williams, Film Scores and Jazz all done to Perfection........2004-10-15
A Great "Catch".......2004-10-04
But for Williams, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was very much a homecoming, as he started out in jazz and even worked quite closely with Mancini early on in Hollywood. The genuine jauntiness and mystery of the film's main musical motifs are balanced by moments of warm but not mushy sentimentality, and hit songs of that period by Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz, and Dusty Springfield round out this appealing collection.
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was such an offbeat project for a composer and a director known for boldness, but it served as a challenge that Spielberg aced on the screen and Williams aced in his music. It is highly recommended for its sheer audacity in going back to the past and still remaining relevant to today.

Yep, this is the band that did that midtempo cover of Alphaville's "Forever Young," played incessantly on "The O.C." But don't hold that against these Australian indie-rockers. On their third album, the members of Youth Group once again work with producer Wayne Connolly (the Vines, You Am I), who helps them polish up their sound and showcase their airtight melodies. Despite the occasional outburst of guitars on tracks like "Catch and Kill" and "Shadowland," the group mostly delivers a set of fuss-free tunes that don't so much demand your attention as pleasantly jangle along, doing their best to make your day better. --Aidin VaziriAlbum Description
Youth Group are one of the best-known unknown bands on the indie scene, after their cover of Alphaville's "Forever Young" became a staple on "The O.C." last spring and one of the most downloaded tracks on iTunes, while earning them a #1 single in their native Australia. This release showcases their growing songwriting ambition on tracks like "Sorry", with its intricate Smiths-like guitar interplay, while "Catch And Kill" finds the band exploring their Velvets/Stooges side. "Casino Twilight Dogs", already gold in Australia, is the album that'll solidify Youth Group's growing status in the US.Customer Reviews:
Another Fantastic Album From Youth Group.......2007-07-23
I've only been a fan of Youth Group for two years, but have totally fell in love with them. This is probably because of the resemblence to my favourite band James in terms of Toby Martin's vocals and word intonation plus some of the music. Other similarities I would say are with Crowded House, Ash and The Charlatans.
This album slightly differs from the previous in that it seems slightly more restrained with more concentration on musical depth, this gives the album a more consistent even feel. I particularly like Sorry (very very Jamesian here) with its Larry Gott-esque guitar sound (check out early James material for this), Catching and Killing, Under The Underpass and the wonderful (i)piece de resitance(i) Start Today Tomorrow. Again like James they handle songs at low-tempi extraordinarily well and are extremely beautiful in composition and sound. Also included is their cover of Forever Young that appeared on the O.C (apparantly popular over here in the UK)
I'd go as far as saying they are one of the best bands that have come out of this decade and deserve to be massive. I hope they can come over and play live in the UK soon. I urge anyone reading this to give them a try and you will soon fall in love with this brilliant band.
Please don't turn mainstream!!!.......2007-04-05
It's no Skeleton Jar.......2007-03-09
It does, however, earn its 3 stars with bright spots like "Under the Underpass", "Daisy Chains", and "Sicily". The cover of "Forever Young" is pretty good as well. They all lack the striking, simple grandeur of previous releases and leave the listener desperate to revist older, more inspiring tracks. Hopefully the next album won't be quite as laden with mediocrity, and hopefully it will be a return to the compelling depth this band is capable of.
One of the most surprising titles of 2007 so far............2007-02-05
Into indie music? Casino Twilight Dogs upends recent releases by The Shins and Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, to release one of the best records in 07' so far. While they don't exactly reinvent the indie rock music scene, CTD is easily one of the most listenable titles thus far. Well "Forever Young" is the cover song on the OC that burned up Itunes (and led me right to this CD), "On a String", "Sorry" , and "Under the Underpass" are just as catchy, meaningful, and distinctly indie to keep you coming back for more. Well a few throwaway tracks are found, The Youth Group is on track to blow up ala Death Cab For Cutie and The Arcade Fire with this beautifully haunting album. Don't sleep on it. If you are still up in the air on buying it, download their version of "Forever Young". It is easily the best yet, the perfect song that sounds modern and vintage at the same time.

The Austin Powers series was hardly the first to spoof James Bond. At the very height of '60s Bondmania, this sprawling, big-budget parody turned the trick, complete with an all-star cast of multiple, dueling Bonds and a bubbly romp of a musical score by Burt Bacharach. Indeed, this swingin' slice of '60s pop kitsch seems to have inspired much of Mike Myers's own later Powers musical tack. Anchored by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass' jaunty main theme and the Brazilian jazz inflections of Dusty Springfield's sublime interpretation of Bacharach's evergreen "The Look of Love," the collection bounds merrily from blaring orchestral action flourishes through Bacharach's own savory takes on jazz-pop and musical send-ups of everything from vaudeville to international pomp and circumstance. It's a dizzy, lighthearted delight from first track to last. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

CASINO ROYALE.......2007-06-07
Also, I prefer the cd cover of the 1st version which is the original poster art for the movie, so I inserted it into the 2nd version's jewel case---which gives me the best of both worlds.
As for the score itself, I think the Oscar-nominated "The Look of Love" is the best love theme ever written for a film and was wrongly not awarded an Oscar. Mike Myers has said the song inspired him to develop the Austin Powers movies and he pays tribute to the song by using it in his first Austin Powers movie in the hot tub scene with Lotta Fagina.
This 2nd version cd is definitely a must-have for those seeking the absolute best in film music.

Virtuoso performance by a jazz/fusion master.......2003-12-31
The opening one-two punch of "Egyptian Danza" and "Chasin' the Voodoo" is probably a mistake. Not that these are bad songs, but they're just too similar - both feature fast-paced, relentlessly hard-driving rhythm tracks that back Al's most frenetic melody lines. Actually, these two pieces are my personal favorites, but on first listening they sounded too much alike, always a danger for instrumentalists. Next us is "Dark Eye Tango" which has a welcome slow groove that has Al's guitar singing a melody rather than screaming it, but a few minutes in the pace picks up and we're tearing along again. So while these really are three terrific tracks, they do leave the impression that Al's just a one-trick pony.
Having shot his wad so early on, the rest of this recording is a bit of a letdown. Al covers Chick Corea's "Senor Mouse" again, and the closer, "Casino" is eminently forgettable, but he redeems himself with the acoustic showcase "Fantasia Suite for Two Guitars". While maintaining the blazing energy levels of "Danza" and "Voodoo" in an acoustic format, this song suite shows Al's command of a breadth of styles that is not hinted at on the rest of this disk.
It would have been smart to re-arrange the playing order of the tracks on this CD, and a good slow number (which I'm not normally a big fan of) would have been a welcome addition here. But the playing is superb, and there's plenty of punch in at least four of the six compositions presented. Jazz/fusion guitarists and percussionists will find this one particularly appealing.
Took ages, but I finally got into it.......2002-08-05
For the record, I'm not someone unused to complex music. My favourite bands include Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull and so on, so something like Casino should be right up my street. As it turned out, it was and I am glad for it.
As for the tracks themselves, the best were Egyptian Danza (this was the easiest to get into), Fantasia Suite For Two Guitars(the second and third movement are especially excellent) and the title track.
I still don't really like Chasin' The Voodoo, Dark Eye Tango, Senor Mouse much, but maybe with a few more listens?

Casino and Elegant Gypsy Suite are his two best albums. I bet I've listened to Casino at least 10,000 times. I know every single note played by every instrument, of every song. I'll never get tired of listening to it.
Steve Gadd, being one of of the greatest drummers ever, compliments Al wonderfully on this album.
I'd love to see today's "guitarists" even try to touch some of the rips Al pulls off. That would be hilarious. No one will ever be this great again. If you appreciate good guitar music, you've got to have this CD.

Music/Listen/Repeat.......2006-08-07
"Alpha Centauri" opens the album in dizzying fashion, giving way to shattering guitar chords, frantic drumming, and a soulful performance by front man Cedric. Jim and Omar play off one another with interesting (and most impressive) guitar structures and progressions, that at most times will leave your jaw on the floor. However they are only complimented by Paul's rumbling bass lines and Tony's outlandish drumming. And this is just the first song. Don't get comfortable, because as quickly as "Alpha Centauri" ends, the jarring, schizophrenic "Chanbara" kicks in showcasing its wild yells, interesting drumming and excellent lyrics. You can hear a bit of Mars-Volta-ish style vocals during the verse, which was a sign of things that would come in the future after At The Drive In's break-up. But just as quickly as the band can floor you with the powerful tracks, driving numbers like "Napoleon Solo" and "Hourglass" show how diverse they can get at the drop of a hat. However I wouldn't say this is a difficult listen at all. "Hulahoop Wounds", "For Now.. We Toast" and "Transatlantic Foe" are all upbeat and accessible, but they are easily balanced out by more aggressive pieces like "Shaking Hand Incision" and "A Devil Among The Tailors." There's such a wide range of dynamics and writing on here, it's hard to get bored with anything the band presents.
Of all the 11 tracks to be found on the album though, "Lopsided" has got to be the absolute best. I will go as far as to say it's the best song the band has ever written. Now of course I hold a certain bias since it is both the first song I ever heard by the band and my personal favorite. Like all the songs found on the disc, the lyrics are absolutely stunning (Cedric is really one of the greatest writers in music) and the musicianship is unparalleled. Furthermore it's probably the most strikingly different tune that the band has ever recorded. While every song on the record is an instant classic in and of itself, "Lopsided" truly set the standard for what I held At The Drive In too.
After all is said and done, there is not a single moment on this cd that is anything less than enjoyable. While this album is not considered as great as their final album "Relationship Of Command", (I have no idea why though) "In/Casino/Out" is really a necessary purchase for all fans of the band, and indie-rock/post-hardcore in general. It was really the biggest stepping stone in the band's discography, and if it lead to great products like "Vaya" and "Relationship Of Command," it would seem like there is little to complain about. While "Acrobatic Tenement" was a bit pre-mature, "In/Casino/Out" was truly when this band become one of the innovators in modern music. Easily deserves the endless mass of praise.

Unlike AT, this album doesnt open very well. Alpha Centauri is okay. Its fast, kind of dissonant, but in a cool way. Chanbara is just ugly, I think, but the percussion is cool and it grows on you. Things pick up at track 3, Hulahoop Wounds, a really catchy, well written song with awesome lyrics. Track 4, Napoleon Solo, is slow and haunting. The way it builds is brilliant and the bridge is one of the most beautiful things ever. Track 5, Pickpocket has some really awesome guitar playing and is very catchy. Its short, but not as short as some of the tracks on the last album (like Star Slight). For Now, We Toast is a great pop tune. The verse is really catchy, and while a little irritating, the chorus is too. The lyrics are about digging a tunnel out of a prison. It's really cool. A Devil Among The Tailors is my least favorite on the album. I think its ugly and boring. The dissonance that the band often uses is used too much here, and it just sounds bad. However, things pick up with Shaking Hand Incision, which is intense and complex, one of the best songs on the album. The drummer is really awesome here. Then comes Lopsided, a powerful, creepy ballad about some sort of mystery with a ship. I don't get it, but its really cool. Hourglass is a radiohead-esque lo-fi ballad which starts out great and keeps getting better, until its perfect ending, where it gets distorted. The last track on the album, Transatlantic Foe, is in my opinion the band's greatest song. It's beautiful, upbeat, and the perfect closer for the album. The lyrics make no sense but I love them.
Fans of punk/rock/emo, or anything else really, should own this. It's a great CD! And while you're at it, check out The Mars Volta, which has the singer and lead guitarist from this band. They're even better!
