5 out of 5 stars Metal/Death/Power/Thrash etc= WOW!.......2007-03-31

This CD Rocks! from beginning to end. I just found out about this band per chance reading reviews of CD's. I have been into Mercenary, Nevermore, Opeth, Dream Theater for awhile, this band is right there with them. Who says that Metal is dead? Some of my favorite tracks are the following: The Illusionist, Mind Machine, Dreaming 24/7, Carved Stone..just to name a few. I used to hate growling vox, but since Opeth has opened my mind to it as long as the music kix butt...then I always give it a chance...well this CD is definetly worth giving a chance if you love METAL!!

5 out of 5 stars Finally a melodeath band with great growling and clean vocals.......2007-03-30

Scar symmetry's latest masterpiece entitled Pitch Black Progress is a fusion of soaring guitars flesh searing drums, wonderful death growls and clean vocals awesome guitar solos and truly outstanding keyboards if you don't like this something must be wrong with you this album has anything a true fan of melodic death metal and metal would want to end it buy this album you wont be
disappointed one last thought to resist is to not exist .

5 out of 5 stars Neither 5 stars nor the word best can describe this album.......2007-03-13

Where are these guys from? This music is unbelievably GREAT. The musicianship shown on this record is top-notch.
I previously saw the promotion banner on myspace that says this music is for fans of In Flames and Soilwork. And that's not totally correct. I think Scar Symmetry is WAY better than the present In Flames and Soilwork.
Strongest vocal and growl and flying solos make this album undefeatable.
Highly Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars it will not dissapoint.......2007-02-12

this is easily one of the best metal CD's ever released. i swear, i get goosebumps from it on every song. i was a huge fan of their debut album symmetric in design, i found their lyrics to be thought provoking and their drum and guitar work to be a template for how metal should be made. since hearing their two albums i measure other bands up against them. easily one of the best metal bands to emerge out of swissmissland. the kaleidoscopic god will leave you slack jawed in awe and with the hair on the back of your neck standing up. the vocals are incredible, transitioning from a gutteral growl to one of the most melodic voices ive ever heard. the guitar and drum work is stunning and fresh. yes, i hear a lot of influence from other bands such as soilwork and dreamtheater, but only in the way of this is what soilwork and dreamtheater wish they sounded like. an amazing album from start to finish. GET IT!!!!

Album Description

Having pumped there way through New Zealand's electronic music scene since their inaugural Gathering New Year's eve festival in 1997, Pitch Black [nz] (with the [nz] added to avoid being mistaken with the USA rap group of the same name) have spent the years since, rousing dance floor punters, generating rave reviews, winning awards and gaining legions of fans worldwide - including warm UK embraces garnered with their dynamic live performances at three Big Chill festivals. Their music has also been used in several films, including the Oscar nominated Whale Rider.

The Pitch Black [nz] sound created by Paddy Free and Michael Hodgson, ranges from organic ambient and layered soundscapes to skanting keyboards, cutting acid riffs and thumping rhythmic grooves, with dub being the glue that holds their musical journeys together. One critic describes them as "Richie Hawtin meets King Tubby or Rhythm and Sound in Technicolor."

Ape to Angel, was originally released in NZ to critical acclaim. Now, as their debut USA release, the A2A album has been repackaged with an added bonus track and eye-popping bonus video of the focus track 'Lost in Translation,' and found an appreciative home on the seminal ambient dub label - Waveform Records.

Over the years Pitch Black [nz] has found favour among club and radio DJs including John Peel (Radio One/BBC), Nick Luscombe (Xfm), Greg Roberts (Dreadzone), Pete Lawrence (Big Chill), Forest (XM satellite/Musical Starstreams/radioioAMBIENT.com). This superb USA debut promises to generate an equal level of continued interest.

5 out of 5 stars Angelic?.......2007-06-26

I don't know the proper buzzwords to describe the genre slot, but GREAT ELECTRONIC JAM. Smooth flows, not too space-y, not minimal, not acid or jazz, somewhat loping rhythms, fast syncopation, layered, house-y, complex. Hear Track 3, Lost in Translation. Powerful. Get it. Try to resist the urge to dance.

2 out of 5 stars Pitch Black goes downhill..........2006-04-10

Nah... This is the worst Pitch Black album. Try "Futureproof" or "Pitch Black", the album, if you want to experience the best of NZ dub-trance. Unfortunately several of the really first rate NZ electronic acts are now insipid and over-commercialised. For Pitch Black and Salmonella Dub, the earlier stuff is definitely the best.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive electronic dub.......2005-11-29

I've collected a number of albums released on the Waveform label lately, and I've been consistently impressed. Pitch Black has been my latest Waveform discovery, and they're a good example of the label's "sound:" really bassy, dub-influenced, echo-effects, some multicultural samples scattered throughout, and while the whole package is pretty laid-back and mellow it's definitely beat-oriented enough that the listener doesn't get bored. You can dance to many of these tracks if played loud enough, or just have it on in the background while chilling at home.

I'm also a real pushover for a good bassline and these guys deliver some excellent dubbed-up bass workouts. Check out track 7: the bass is so deep it kind of has a paralyzing effect on your cerebellum and makes you feel like you're floating on a sea of puffy white marshmellows... or maybe that's just me. Anyway, this disc gets my recommendation.

Apparently they also have a number of other albums that aren't available in North America yet, so hopefully Waveform will start releasing their back catalogue sometime soon (hint, hint!) Similar artists worth checking out, if you like these guys, would be Children of Dub and labelmates Sounds from the Ground, Phutureprimitive, and A Positive Life.

5 out of 5 stars The Future of Dub has Arrived!.......2005-09-09

This album is amazing! If you love dub - especially 21st century dub - then this is the album you've been waiting for. While being tough to locate - this New Zealand duo has been producing dubbed out greatness for 3 albums now! "Ape to Angel" is their first American release - and it's a stunner! Perfect for chilling out to or firing up that spliff and doing a little armchair traveling - this album hits all the right notes. There's touches of drum and bass, house and breaks - all drenched in dub!!! It's dubtastic!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars About as heavy as melodic death metal gets.......2006-06-24

After bouncing around from label to label, the melodeath metal band known as Callenish Circle finally found a comfortable home with Metal Blade Records for their fifth full length disc, "Pitch. Black. Effects."

Believe it or not, this band is NOT from Sweden. Sure, there's no way you could have known that while listening to this C.D., but CC actually hail from the Netherlands. The riffs on songs like "Behind Lines" are very fiery and fast, and often sound like they could have been lifted from an In Flames or old Soilwork demo, the drum work is nimble and fast, and the scratchy vocals are sort of in the same vein as God Dethroned. This resulting sound is one which is about as heavy as metal gets which still retains the "melodic" prefix.

Many of the songs race by at a high speed but they also usually manage to be somewhat melodic. There are a few tracks which are fast, slamming, melody deficient onslaughts. "This Day You Regret" opens up the album on a strong note with a throbbing rhythm which is bursting at the seams with white hot, chug and churn riffs. Several tracks later, "Sweet Cyanide" and "Self Inflicted" have whiplash, breakneck tempos with scorching, propulsive guitar leads and mini solos; "Blind" is backed by huge, thick, churning, almost thunderous guitars, quick, thumping drums, and deep, monstrous barks; and, lastly, "Guess Again" shoots by with an explosive guitar and double bass rhythm.

But most of these songs slip in at least a few seconds of synthesizers and/or a melodic, Maiden-esque guitar lick for good measure. For example, "Ignorant" offsets humming, resonating, Skinny Puppy-ish keyboards in the verses with crunchy riffs and pounding drums in the choruses. And "Schwarzes Licht" is a mostly ambient and melodic song with atmospheric keyboards and an ominous spoken word passage.

Although this band doesn't seem very intent on breaking new ground, "Pitch. Black. Effects" clearly showcases solid songwriting skills and exceptional instrumental abilities. Callenish Circle are definitely a promising band, and they deserve your attention as much as almost any other melodeath band out there today.

4 out of 5 stars good but they got a better cd.......2006-06-08

It is a good cd but my passion your pain is better. I really like their music better without the weird intros and techno music. It just sounds cleaner. But if you get this cd the song blind is really mean, great guitar good lyrics and the drums rule.

5 out of 5 stars Shimmering Space Metal.......2006-03-30

This Dutch band's new album is a real treat for industrial metal fans. Shimmering, swirling keyboard textures and rhythmically-enhancing beats and samples add whole other dimensions to jagged, chugging riffs. There are moments of powerful thrash (especially so on "Guess Again"), and some effectively dynamic screams from "vo-killist" Pat Savelkoul. There are also some terrific breakdowns into spacey, ambient keyboards and drum clashes, some effective guitar solos, spoken-word female vocals...PITCH.BLACK.EFFECTS is a mixed bacg of treats. The album fits into some sort of space between Meshuggah, later In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, and Fear Factory, making for some excellent industrial-melodic death metal. Perhaps the resulting genre is "Space Metal?" Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Substance filled, Dutch, Melo-Death! mmm... mmm... Good........2006-03-22

CALLENISH CIRCLE - Pitch.Black.Effect
-
So you might be asking yourself, what sets Callenish Circle apart from countless other Melo-Death bands flooding the scene right now?

#1. Their Dutch - Repeat, not Scandinavian! (But seriously...)
#2. They have Substance! I mean real substance. They have a variety of industrial sounding keys, vocal effects, samples etc...

At first glance they may come across as a Dark Tranquillity clone... Though I see where the comparison fits, I can assure you this isn't the case. Though the overall sound is similar to DT's Character, they employ an even thicker industrial accent to their music.
CC may be one of the few Metal bands that have understood how effective keys and samples can be whenever they are used appropriately.
(i.e. not like the Nu-Metal keys heard on Reroute/Soundtrack era In Flames. Or the flamboyant keyboards used by Children of Bodom.)

Though this album may not be anything groundbreaking it doesn't stop me loving this CD... From start to finish this is a fantastic album. Even though the repetition of track 7, `Guess Again' does test my patience a bit the rest of the album is solid material. `Pitch.Black.Effect' may be their 5th album, but it is my first intro to the band and I can assure you I will be sampling their back catalogue very soon.

Favorite Songs: Sweet Cyanide, As You Speak and This Day You Regret.

4 out of 5 stars Callenish Circle are as good as some similar Swedish bands........2006-02-22

I agree with the other reviewers that say this is a solid melodic death metal release. It is as good as Soilwork used to be, and their sound can be compared in a sense to Darkane as well. It is different than Dark Tranquillity, however, whom I still like the best out of the melodic death genre. They deserve four stars for their efforts here, but they lack the variety and technical skill of that band. Don't get me wrong, they are good. Any fan of the Swedish/Finnish "Gothenburg" melodic death metal style will enjoy this Dutch band. Check out their previous album. It is just as good, if not better.

5 out of 5 stars A damn fine ride from beginning to end.......2003-02-01

I got the pleasure of catching Pitch Black when they were still coming up among the ranks of the new wave of east bay hardcore acts. I was really impressed then, and upon hearing this record....FLoored! It's been awhile since I moved away from there...so i have not had the chance to hear thier progress...but man I am stoked.

This record is tight as hell....some incredible basslines...catchy songs...hard, yet totally palatable to the fan of more straightforward mid tempo punk. Lyrics are strong, songs aren't too long....THis record is a keeper! Fans should check out other newer east bay bands.FRacas, the Fleshies,The Enemies, Shut The F**k Up, Born Dead, Nigel Peppercock....to name but a few....seems like the East side is coming back strong!

5 out of 5 stars check it out!.......2002-08-17

This record seems to get better and better every time I listen to it. I would suggest that everyone who listens to punk rock, go check out this band and this record.

Album Description

This is a piece of work representing one of the more tumultuous times in the band's recent history. And as we all know, good things often come from the toughest experiences. In this case, we get one of the most powerful collections of songs Cave In has put together. They've toured with Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World, Converge, Piebald, Between The Buried And Me, Scissorfight, Isis, Dillinger Escape Plan, Neurosis, and more. For fans of Converge, Radiohead, Failure, Mastadon.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars So Happy I Bought This.........2006-03-27

I picked this up on a whim..and i'm so glad i did. This is very impressive stuff. It has a Glassjaw mixed with Isis style/feel..in my opinion. Different, but very cool Rock/Metal. Some songs are very spacey, others are moshworthy. I don't think Cave In can be pigeonholed into any kind of genre..they're a whole heap of genres in one. And that makes for a very interesting listen.

This has impressed me greatly, and i hope to get my hands on "Antenna" very soon. I'm sure i won't be disappointed. I think, for fans of Glassjaw, Isis, Placebo, Will Haven, Pelican and even Converge..you'll like this. It's at times intense, at times melodic, at times even beautiful..very beautiful. Fantastic album. So glad i picked it up.

4 out of 5 stars Where Will They Go Next?.......2006-03-05

After being dropped from RCA following 2003's "Antenna" (yet another amazing band abandoned by the big corporate music world), Cave In rightfully returned to their true home on Hydra Head records and quickly turned out their follow up, "Pitch Perfect Black." Thus far this album seems to have garnered a mixed bag of reviews, some describing it as a glorious return to the band's roots and a phenomenal mixture of "Jupiter" and "Until Your Heart Stops", while some are simply describing it as polished off demos put together as a full length. Neither description is really a correct classification for this album. While the band does incorporate elements of their older sound on this release (particularly Steven's return to the tortured metalcore vocals he was known for on "Until Your Heart Stops" in places), this isn't a glorious hardcore rebirth or anything of that nature. In fact "Pitch Perfect Black" is actually a fine stepping stone in the always evolving Cave In sound, and one that rightfully connects everything the band has done in the past to everything they are doing right now.

First, like mentioned above, it should be noted that "Pitch Perfect Black" isn't a phenomenal mix of "Until Your Heart Stops" and "Jupiter." Although Steven brings back his screaming vocal style in places, musically this sounds nothing like the Cave In on either of those releases. Of course there's the spacy guitar progressions that the band has been flirting with since their heyday ("Paranormal" and "Ataraxia" both have groovy, atmospheric feels) and there's somewhat of a return of the brooding assaults of UYHS ("Trepanning" probably being the most obvious straight-ahead rocker), but there's also a lot of differences. In fact "Pitch Perfect Black" could more correctly be described as combination of every album Cave In has put out so far. There's the melodic leanings of "Antenna", the lush soundscapes of "Jupiter" and the hardcore roots of "Until Your Heart Stops" all sprinkled nicely throughout the record. Songs like the opener "The World In Your Way" and "Paranormal" take the progressive-meets-hardcore approach and run rampid, incorporating screaming vocals and wild guitar dynamics, while moody pieces like "Down The Drain" and "Tension in the Ranks" give the album an obvious sense of balance. There's also plenty of twists and turns like the band has always been known for to keep the listener on their toes and maintain a constant level of surprise.

This was a much needed album in the Cave In discography. It has the right draw to win back the hardcore elite who are in love with "Until Your Heart Stops", and the sensible progressive appeal that attracted fans to "Jupiter" and "Antenna". The incorporation of all ranges of their sound was a really great move on the band's part, as it proves that Cave In still continue to be on of the most creative and overlooked bands in music. While it's not some glorious "Jupiter" meets "Until Your Heart Stops" mix, for what it's worth "Pitch Perfect Black" is a great treat for fans who have been wanting to see the band explore even further realms of their sound. With a rightful return to the label which they were always truly at home with, Cave In sound better than ever, and this album leaves much anticipation for what the group will pursue in the future. Until then "Pitch Perfect Black" bridges the gap between the past and present.

4 out of 5 stars DISCLAIMER: This is not a proper full length album!.......2006-01-04

Some reviewers don't seem to understand the circumstances regarding this release. "Perfect Pitch Black" is a collection of songs culled from three separate recording sessions and includes demos from what was to be the band's second album for RCA. These demos were given a few production related embellishments, but they still retain a rough edge inherent to any unfinished product. Even Stephen Brodsky himself admitted that the lyrics weren't fully flushed out. So it seems premature to compare this release to any one of the band's fully conceived albums. However, there are still a lot of great musical ideas going on in "Perfect Pitch Black". This release would be considered excellent by any other bands standards.

I've been a longtime fan of Cave In, including each of the band's musical incarnations to present. To me, this release signifies a band that has rediscovered its love for music after an ill-fated relationship with a major label. Cave In could have easily quit after being dropped from RCA. Instead, they quickly released a collection of songs which only hint as to which musical direction the band will take next, and since then the band has toured virtually non-stop. Given the tumultuousness of the band's past few years, what more could you ask for. Save the comparisons for the bands upcoming full-length album with Converge drummer, Ben Koller.

For those new to Cave In's music, I'd recommend investigating the band's brutal roots ("Until Your Heart Stops") and its space rock aspirations ("Jupiter") before coming up to speed with this release.

3 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype...even from "old fans".......2005-11-02

Let me start by saying that Cave In is one of my favorite bands from the past decade, partially because of some of the great songs they've written (metalcore-era to present), but mostly because of the tones and sounds they've come up with.

That being said, their latest effort is mediocre at best. Don't believe the hype. This record doesn't have any of the dense, riff-a-minute writing that was all over Until Your Heart Stops, nor does it feature the unifying space rock themes, cavernous reverbs, and delayed guitar lines of Jupiter. It doesn't sound like a hybrid of the two albums, and it disappoints me to hear people making that comparison just because it has some growly vocal parts and some double bass. Granted, they're pulling on some of their old elements here, and the guitar tones on this record are more American amp/70's sounding than before which I dig, but a Jupiter/UYHS crossbreed this is not.

It sounds like a collection of B-sides or leftovers that the band threw together just to get some sort of release out. My heart goes out to them because like I said, I think these guys have put out some of may favorite stuff in recent years and did an amazing job of tying in a lot of the same influences I'm into. I also can sympathize with them if they're having writer's block, but hearing people hail this record as a return to form is something I just can't stomach.

4 out of 5 stars It's not perfect...then again it's not "jupiter"..........2005-10-08

Honestly this is the best cave in CD ive encountered in an awefully long time. I started listening to cave in with "beyond hypothermia" and i've seen them change from metal to pop to "MTVized" and now back to what us original cave in fans admired in the first place. The CD is basically a depiction of the decade that cave in has been in business; metal songs, pop songs, and comibations. The lyrics reflect cave in's attempt at "making it big" and now breaking from those major recording industries and returning to (what i think is a better label) Hydra Head Records owned by Aaron Turner of ISIS and Old Man Gloom. "The World is In your Way," "Off to ruin," and "Down the Drain" are some of the best cave in songs ive heard yet. True cave in fans won't be dissapointed; but, you will still here some lengthy repetive riffs (such as Ataraxia and Trepanning) which knocks down the CD's perfect score. It's not "jupiter" but its pretty damn good.

5 out of 5 stars High quality, low key jazz.......2006-10-20

A pleasant surprise. Excellent, unpretentious, mellow, recently recorded jazz with recognizable tunes is surprisingly uncommon. This groups performs these well-known show tunes and standards with a high quality of musicianship and in a low key approach. The instrumentation is consistent throughout, with guitar, piano, bass, drums and occasionally vibes. The improvizations are excellent. While listing keyboards, there is little or no 'electronic' sound here, which is to my liking. I very much enjoyed listening to this disc on its merits, I could use this as background music at home, and I will recommend it to friends who ask for "mellow jazz."

1 out of 5 stars The biggest let down of 2004...and in a long time.......2006-05-18

Is this a joke? is this the same group that came out with DJ PREMIER on "It's all real"? one of the best premo tracks heard in a long time? well, it appears so. This album is filled with nothing but trash, awful substance and poor beats. These guys are the epitome of one hit wonders. Lets just hope they can put as much effort as they did into "It's all real" into some more work, and make a comeback. What a letdown. 1 star just for the one track. PEACE

You know how most albums has a couple of fillers mixed with the joints, well this is pretty much the other way around every song except for 3 or 4 (especially the DJ Permier produced ones) sounds like fillers: not bad but not good either...

this could've been fixed easily, on at least on of the tracks on the PB's brags about how rich he is, and since he is so rich he couldve had afford to have DJ Premier produce all the tracks, at least more than two... If he this was done this couldve easily become a banger, couse when Premo and PB's hook up on 2 of the tracks it's pure fire...

3 out of 5 stars Was I Expecting Too Much?.......2005-08-08

Im a big east coast rap fan, as you can tell by my reviews. So when i heard "Its All Real" I was so excited and i couldnt wait for this album. DJ Premier is by far one of the best producers in the game. "Its All Real" and "Got It Locked" are the 2 best joints on the album, both produced by him. There are a couple other good songs, like thier second single "Good Times" and "Recpgnize". But for the most part, the rest of the album is filled with good lyrics and horrible production. A decent buy for fans of DJ Premier, as 2 of his best songs ever are on here. Overall not bad for a Rookie album, they show that they have potential though.

2 out of 5 stars 2.5 Stars.......2005-01-16

I thought that Pitch Black was going to be the beginning of the end for party rap, but I was wrong. DJ Premier has his great signature production on this album, but Pitch Black is nothing to get excited about. NOT RECOMMENDED.

I saw Pitch Black live and went to get this CD. If you like a good beat this CD has it. A tiny bit of vocal, on one track I think, done really well. I love doing design work with it playing in the background. Well worth the money.

    Album Description

This is the new beast from the Norwegian brigade! England's Terrorizer Magazine called Kraft, the debut album from Norway's Vreid, "a collection of first-class barbed and vitriolic riffs that will tear through your soul like a flail through rare steak." Norway's Scream Magazine added, "the future looks bright for these Norwegians." With Pitch Black Brigade the future is now. Recorded at Studio 1184, mixed at Subsonic Society (Dismember, Susperia, Darkthrone), and mastered at Tailormade by Peter in de Betou (Zyklon) Pitch Black Brigade is a giant leap for the four-piece. Eight new songs each containing the bands bold musicianship. Similar to Kraft, both English and Norwegian lyrics color the grim historical themes taken from various events from the 20th Century that outline PBB. The band are currently completing a video for the album track "Pitch Black." Featuring the remaining members of Windir, disbanded after the tragic death of band founder/leader Valfar (aka Terje Bakken), Vreid (Norwegian for "wrath") have already toured Europe with label mates Enslaved. The band again plans to tour in support of Pitch Black Brigade, with hopes of touching US soil this time round as well.

Very Hot Snake-ish, but manage to carve out their own unique sound (nice touch with the organ). This is a very cool CD, it's too bad they have since broken up.
