5 out of 5 stars So much fun!.......2007-06-13

This is still such a classic and so much fun!

5 out of 5 stars BYE BYE BIRDIE.......2007-03-03

I always enjoyed the film version of "Birdie" as well as the soundtrack and now this reissue includes "The Sultans Ballet" where Janet Leigh bites off more than she can chew when she invites a group of Sultans(Shriners) to dance. There are a couple of minor inclusions including "We Love You Conrad" and the rehearsal of "One Last Kiss" My only question is why didnt they use the complete version of "A Lot of Livin To Do" Even with the additional tracks the CD clocks in at 46 minutes so space wasn't a problem. It's quite understandable why the Russian Ballet was not included since it would be out of place on an otherwise perky and bright score.

While "Bye Bye Birdie" may not be one of the best scores it is zesty and cheerful to listen to on a gloomy day and as one of the numbers suggests it helps you to "Put On A Happy Face"

4 out of 5 stars Bye Bye Birdie soundtrack.......2006-07-01

The product itself is excellent, but: 1) it took about three weeks to arrive; and 2) we didn't realize the film cut out and added so music. What we needed was a soundtrack for the stage production.

4 out of 5 stars Love the movie...but the soundtrack?.......2006-05-04

I am a huge fan of the movie and the soundtrack is also amazing...the only thing I'm uspet about is that "One Last Kiss" on the cd is TOTALLY different!

4 out of 5 stars Bye Bye Birdie was a good Buy Buy.......2005-08-02

Solid cast recording brings back the light-hearted msuicals of the 50s and 60s. Used as the primer for an upcoming stage version of the show, we listened frequently, and haven't tired yet.

3 out of 5 stars Great album, but my booklet is missing songs.......2006-12-20

I've been a King Missile fan since the early 90's(Sensitive Artist & Detachable Penis are my personal favorites). I took advantage of a sale recently to buy this cd that I hadn't heard in a while.

Their lyrics are so amusing that I looked forward to reading along while listening. However, upon purchase of this cd I was dismayed to find that my booklet-insert was missing some pages & had some dupblicates (Im missing songs 3-6) but have duplicate pages for (#s 6-8 & 16 & 17).

I assume this was not deliberate but is just an accident due to shoddy assemblage.

4 out of 5 stars "it happens a lot, it's detachable...".......2006-05-14

King Missile were at their best when they managed to match John S Hall's offbeat poetry Lyrics to a keen edged musical palate. "Happy Hour" was the album that did most consistently ("The Way To Salvation" comes real close), but also had the honor of containing the classic "Detachable Penis." "DP" got them on radio morning shows all over the country and made it look like mainstream success might be looming for King Missile.

But frankly, their beat-poet songs and Frank Zappa styled musical ranting probably doomed them to their beloved cult. Hall's drift into MTV-Poetry slams probably didn't help - as the band was then wedged into the arty school of rock category. But that was probably not a loss to us that loved the band from early on. And it makes "Happy Hour" insanity like Hall's over-the-top tribute to "Martin Scorsese" and the crazed "Take Me Home" or "Ed" all the more entertaining. You also will get a "DP" styled chuckle out of "The Evil Children" or the off-the-cuff poke at U2 at the end of "Metanioa." "Happy Hour" was also a musical potpourri of style: the jazzy drumming of Roger Murdock and the cool keyboards of Chris Xefos -- who I always considered King Missile's secret weapon -- made "Happy Hour" a feast for rock music buffs.

They may not be for everyone (and I saw them play to a Nashville audience so small that Hall stopped the show and gave the audience free sodas from the band's backstage stash, and then Chris Xefos joined some friends and me to bar-hop), but if you own only one King Missile album, then "Happy Hour" is the greatest collection of the band's strengths.

4 out of 5 stars hum!.......2005-07-21

Some uninvited guests have stepped in my bubble through this public domain. Don't like it!!

I'll dedicate song 8 to them and if they find something nice in it, then they must be a sick puppies.

5 out of 5 stars Best Ever!.......2002-11-14

Detachable Penis! Have you seen my Penis? How can you not love this song! King Missile rocks my socks!

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-05-10

KING MISSILE really topped themselves with HAPPY HOUR, which
is also one of my favorite albums of the 90's! JOHN S. HALL was
always a brilliant lyricist, or poet and he came up with some
of his best lyrics for this, and some of his funniest, especially
on I'M SORRY and DETACHABLE PE..... What also makes this album
a masterpiece is the music itself, which, for KING MISSILE, had
never been so strong. Musically, they combine 90s grunge rock
with 70's prog rock and hard rock. The musical star of this al-
bum is ROGER MURDOCK, whose adventurous and heavy jazz rock
drumming is all over this album. On IT'S SATURDAY, MURDOCK
improvises a wild and crazy drum solo, over which JOHN S HALL
recites some a very funny poem. There is such a variety in the
songs, from the very heavy AND, which has some pretty disgusting
sound effects, to the very laid back HEAVEN to the dirge-like,
almost church hymn like HAPPY HOUR, which is the most serious
song HALL and company have ever written and is also my favorite
KING MISSILE song of all time. I can't understand HALL'S lyrics,
but for some reason, they strike a minor chord in me and his
singing for this song is his most emotional ever. WHAT A SONG!!
I can't recommend thsi album enough, really!

The Album was Originally Made to Benefit Kentucky Thumbpicker Tuck Razer's Family after He Passed Away. It Quickly Became a Favorite. Tommy Emmanuel and Renowned Jazz Guitarist Jim Nichols from Northern California Recorded this Tribute to Chet Atkins' Music. Three More Songs, Written and Played by Emmanuel Alone in that Style, Are Now Added to it to Make 'happy Hour'.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tommy let's Thomas Thumb show off!.......2007-01-10

A pleasant surprise indeed when I found this on Amazon! Haven't seen this one at home, so obviously a US release. Excellent showpiece of Tommy's ability to play with a "disconnected thumb", still working on that one myself. Mostly showing off Tommy's ability to play, which we all know he can!

5 out of 5 stars Splendid, masterful, delightful.......2006-12-29

Based on the song list, I wasn't prepared for how much I truly enjoyed this CD. I've thoroughly appreciated it, especially the guitar method displayed in such excellent improvisational style by both Tommy Emmanuel and Jim Nichols. Both artists are individually superb, and for this collaboration they blend their strengths for maximum effect.

Tommy combines a flawless rhythmic sense with his matchless ability to draw something original from old standards like Avalon, while at the same time supporting Jim's solos with understated grooves and harmonics that makes you wonder why the original song never sounded that good.

Jim also gives his best to this album. His solos have a great technical depth, yet he never leaves the essence of the basic groove behind, making his mark on each song with some licks that will leave you speechless or just saying, "Yeah...," in agreement.

I have nearly all Tommy Emmanuel's acoustic music now, and this is every bit as good as the other albums (though not especially similar). In fact, thanks to Jim's presence, it's much better musically than his album with Chet Atkins, I think.

Enjoy.

Product Description

Evolve's chilled out grooves and breaks are produced by Red. Their debut outing, Happy Hour In The Gene Pool is a delightful blend of lounge pop, subtle beats, found sound, and mellow jazz influences, a lounge lizard s idea of heaven on Earth. The overall vibe is predominantly mellow, and the arrangements ooze sophistication and depth. Singer Margo Reymundo features on two tracks contributing her distinctive raspy, Billy Holiday-esque jazzy vocal stylings to "Couldn't Be More Wrong" and "The Way Back", with rapper Tantrum providing the testosterone on "By Definition: Cool" and "Mice On The Ice". Happy Hour In The Gene Pool manages to stay focused and coherent throughout it s sixty plus minutes while providing enough diversity to maintain interest, and enough depth to sustain repeated listenings. Most of the tracks presented here are ripe for the plucking by nearly any of the hundreds of chill out mix albums being released. The album is equally enjoyable to chill out to whether on headphones, at a cocktail party or on a long drive. Happy Hour In The Gene Pool contains a little something for every electronica music fan, which, in this case, is a good thing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Chill out music at it's best.......2007-05-11

Excellent album and I'm happy to own it. In my humble opinion, the following three tracks are exceptional:

3 Couldn't be more wrong
4 By definition: Cool
10 Where where you (Sunday Afternoon)

Evolve seem to have been influenced by a wide range of musicians in the field of chill out, trip-hop and lounge music. "By definition: Cool" sometimes even reminds me of "Stereo MC's".

Apart from the above mentioned highlights, there's some smoother/quieter tracks.

I live in Zurich, Switzerland, and was unable to find this album in Europe, which is a bit of a shame.Happy Hour In The Gene Pool

5 out of 5 stars Smoothjazz.com Review.......2007-01-16

And what a swanky, swirling, sophisticated happy hour it is! A mingling mélange of smooth grooves and chilled tracks from beginning to end. Evolve has a superb and intelligent recording here; one that makes even the most blasé music enthusiast sit up and take notice with its rich instrumentation and arrangements featuring killer drum programming and loops, trumpet, flugelhorn and keyboards, as well as brilliant lyrical notions and outstanding vocals from the sultry Margo Reymundo and intriguing nu-rap from Tantrum. The man behind the evolution of Evolve? Only the coolest Brit in California with a name to match, Red Broad. Red's work on HAPPY HOUR IN THE GENE POOL is deep and poignant, yet shallow enough to wade in with friends while sipping cocktails. Evolve is genre defining in my opinion; a standard by which other artists should measure their work and quality. In a time when the music industry requires life support, Evolve has just shot an injection of clever and unique into its veins and offers the consumer a reason to buy the entire project, not just a tune. More please! More music that appeals to the senses and packages itself in a stunning, shiny digipak that you never want to put down. SmoothLounge.com invites you to Evolve.~SANDY SHORE

5 out of 5 stars Ryder at his best........2007-07-08

John Cale had his hand in the production of this album... I remember the day I purchased it - and that was a very long time ago. I have the super rare white cover version... I still love this CD... Whenever I play this, people want to borrow it - I never let them - because it was so hard to get or out of print for a while... It remains one of my most special CD's and I never really stopped listening to it.

If you enjoy or collect music from this "genre" then this is really a "must have" album for you. I wouldn't say that it "started it all" but it was in the mix... Ryder was at his best and provides real energy here-Another thing I really like about this album are the bass lines...
It's groovy, delicious and hard to put down. I also recommend Pills + Thrills and Bellyaches and the Black Grape album: It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah.

4 out of 5 stars A Madchester Marvel.......2004-04-18

This debut album of fun, irreverent dance music is unique because the songs are based on jangly guitar riffs rather than synthesizers and drum machines. Happy Mondays' reliance on keyboards and electronic beats would increase over the next few albums. But here the band, as captured by the legendary John Cale, offer a refreshing alternative to the ultra-slick, over-produced sound of most late eighties pop music.

The lyrics are crass, sly, and at times nonsensical, but somehow always endearing. Even though the songs (apart from Russell and Cob 20) have a lot of charm, Shaun Ryder's wildly uneven and unprofessional vocal delivery won't appeal to everyone. In fact, you'll probably either love or hate his approach, but that's part of what made the Mondays so special.

Bez, House music, and the Madchester scene were just around the corner, but this really was the record that started it all!

5 out of 5 stars One of the most important albums ever made.......2003-12-30

Even if you don't like rave or dance music, you will love this album. The lyrics are dark the music infectious. Without a doubt, Shaun Ryder on his best day rivals Blake on his average days. There really is nothing to compare it to as the Mondays created a genre all their own. This album is what every 80's alt-pop band wanted to be but could not.

I listened to this album and ended up buying the entire Mondays collection (Including Yes, Please and even a Black Grape album). The first three Mondays albums are by far the best.

5 out of 5 stars mint.......2000-08-02

It's mint...buy it. Madchester rave on. They were born in Little hulton and its rough there...this album captures it all...a bunch of rum manc lads...rave on

5 out of 5 stars Another amazing Ted Hawkins release.......2006-07-14

I've been listening to Ted Hawkins CD's for a few years now, and the man's voice is incredible. So much emotion and soul poured into every song. This is one of my favorite Ted Hawkins CD's. The song "Happy Hour" ranks up there as one of my favorite Ted Hawkins songs. I also really enjoy "California Song", "One Hundred Miles" and "Cold and Bitter Tears". For any Ted Hawkins fans out there (and there should be many), this is a great CD and you won't be dissapointed.

      Album Description

Holy Happy Hour, the debut album from Stockholm Syndrome is a bracing and revelatory intersection of captivating songs, deep grooves and virtuosic playing that marks the arrival of an important new band in no uncertain terms. This is genre-transcending music…scratch that-it's genre-shredding music, the product of gifted, attuned and adventurous artists pushing each other past the normal limits to a place that is rarely visited. Given the group's back-story, it wouldn't be inaccurate to state that the five band members were as stunned by what they had collectively summoned up as listeners will be when they hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Score this rocker! You deserve the pleasure!!.......2007-04-03

Stockholm Syndrome, during their far too brief life span in 2004, was one of those rare "super groups" made up of members of other tight bands and studio musicians who simply gel awesomely. Their songs talk about reality, beautiful and ugly as it gets, and they stay diversified without making it seem like they are going out of their way to play a variety of styles. The tunes, "Empire One", "White Dirt", "Shining Path", and the remake of the Climax Blues Band hit "Couldn't Get It Right" alone is easily worth what is being asked for a used or new copy of this fantastic disc. There is only one tune I consider a 'bump on a log' on the disc, and my wife likes that one too. If you like top notch musicians getting together and jamming, you will love this disc. Pick it up, you deserve it! Also, be on the look out for any of the live material that shows up now and then, as that is where the band truly shines. Stockholm Syndrome got together in 2007 to play a bennefit show for percussion member Wally Ingram, and it kicked!!

I can't ever figure out where in the world the music industry's head is at when something like this can come along and NOTHING gets said about it. Give it a listen, better yet if you ever get a chance to go see them live and you will know of what I speak.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome!.......2006-01-30

Knowing that it was Jerry Joseph and Dave Schools, I had a feeling this was going to be good. But, the reality did not prepare me for the experience of this ensemble. This is one of the MUST HAVE CD's for anyone into the alternative=jam band=rock sounds.

      SIMPLY AWESOME BADASSERY!

5 out of 5 stars YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS BAND LIVE!!! .......2004-08-08

i saw these guys a few weeks ago in winston-salem, nc... they are INCREDIBLE! my brother and i are still talking about this show! i think everyone else did a great job of describing the sound... buy the album, its great, but dont miss a chance to see their live act.

5 out of 5 stars Album rock is back!!!.......2004-08-05

Trying to explain the sound produced by Stockholm Syndrome is like trying to morph the Arcangels, Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Phish, Climax Blues Band, and Soundgarden with the undeniable songwriting capabilities of Jerry Joseph and the aura of Dave Schools' bottom end. Wally Ingram is an absolutely amazing drummer, and Eric McFadden's chops are one to marvel at. Danny Dziuk blends in an almost spacy key presence that is like a layer or incandescent paint over the rest of the music. This rivals great albums of our time like Nirvana Nevermind, Led Zeppelin 4, Rolling Stones Exile on Main St., etc.

      ALBUM ROCK IS BACK!
