Since they emerged in the early 90s, Newfoundland's own Great Big Sea have gradually consolidated a reputation as one of the greatest neo-Celt bands, from anywhere in the Six Nations or, as in this case, beyond. Drawing upon their homeland's strong Irish and Scottish ancestry and centuries-old seafaring heritage, they have fashioned a roistering, danceable sound and a live presence not unlike a bar-band but operating on a massive scale. But for all their good-time, party-hearty extroversion, they also demonstrate a rare affinity for love songs and more introspective types of material. Recorded in spectacular sound before adoring audiences, this "kitchen party," as one band member described it, is at once intimate and grand, folkloric and modern, acoustic and electric. Traditional instruments like fiddle, tin whistle, accordion are fused seamlessly with electric guitars and trap drums, plus tight and charismatic lead and harmony vocals, creating a spiraling energy that takes the crowd by storm and hurtles from living room speakers like a conquering wave. The CD is accompanied by a must-have DVD, which not only includes 26 tracks of concert footage but four essential music videos, one of which, "Lukey," features a collaboration with the Chieftains. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews:
They sound tired.......2007-07-23
This one is just disappointing. I absolutely love GBS but this offering is not up to snuff. They sound raspy, worn-out and tired. This is evident by Alan's changing several melodic lines to avoid signing high. The energy of both the band and the crowd are not near as high as in the Great Big DVD. This is nice to have the more recent songs, but I wish it would've been a better performance.
Nonetheless, an average performance by this band is still better than most bands playing today.
WONDERFUL GOOD!!!!!!.......2007-07-04
I will admit that I was a bit slow in learning of this excellent group and discovered them quite by accident. I love Celtic music and had recently heard them singing Capt. Kidd on Pandora. I went straight to Amazon and ordered Courage & Patience & Grit. It not only has 20 something songs on the CD, but extra tracks on the DVD portion for the live concert. These guys, Sean, Alan & Bob, are not only extremely musically talented but smart, witty and funny as well. VERY well worth every penny!!!!! I plan on buying more of their product!!!!!
Different, though enjoyable.......2007-05-24
To be honest, they have added a little weight, lost a little pep and seem to be focusing on a little older crowd. These are all just little perceptions that a long time fan would pick up. Some of the songs are done very well, some not so well. I loved Gideon Brown (which is not on the Hard & The Easy CD) but other favorites came off a little flat. I missed Tickle Cove Pond, which I thought would be included surely. Coupled to these disappointments is the fact that Sean seemed to make comments bordering on inappropriate for youngsters during the video performance. Did I enjoy it, yes. As much as the Great Big DVD? No. Their performances in that video may not ever be matched. The music on the Hard & The Easy CD is EXCELLENT and I must suggest you get that CD coupled with this 2 disc set to experience it completely. Great Big Sea is always able to provide truly amazing value with their releases. A video DVD and CD are included in quite a few releases and I look forward to the next one. In summary, this was a good addition but not quite up to par with past presentations.
Courage & Patience & Grit - Great Big Sea In Concert [CD/DVD Combo].......2007-04-12
Good Canadian-Irish group with a distinctive flair for regional music and traditional Irish music. The CD is good, the DVD is better. You get a much better feel for the group and the music by watching it first.

Sad, Really Sad.......2007-05-13
These CDs don't meet the standards that I expect from Elmer Bernstein's wonderful film music.
*It's just Boring*
The ensemble doesn't have the energy one would expect to play "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". I think the City of Prague and National Youth Jazz Orchestras were bargain orchestras used to make an inexpensive CD set of one of my favorite film composers. The conducting and arrangements were what made this an obviously bad album.
An excellent movie themes antology by ELMER BERNSTEIN.......2007-05-10
Silva Screen Records, presents this antology of the music from the late great composer/conductor ELMER BERNSTEIN, who supervised this recording just before die.
Played the The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by his one time assistant James Fitzpatrick
Recorded in HDCD and Dolby Surround
Excellent.......2007-04-22
it's unfortunate that more tracks weren't able to be recorded as theree was a good 15-20 minutes of space remaining on both discs. Regardless, this is an excellent sampler, especially in conjunction with Varese's Bernstein sampler including rare stuff like the Black Cualdron.
With regards to this silva set, these recordings range back to 1994, with Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit being recorded for a John Wayne CD and Bridge At Remagen for a CD of classic War themes. The Great Escape was also recorded for that CD, but producer James Fitzpatrick opted to record a new arrangement (same with Magnificent Seven). In '97, The Buccaneer for included on a Swashbucklers disc, while Heavy Metal was on the popular 'Space and Beyond' compilation. In '98, the world premiere recording of Airplane first appeared on a DISASTERS film disc. So while it may technically be the world premiere RECORDING it certainly is not the world premiere CD RELEASE of that recording. Ghostbusters was included on Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier, the second followup to the popular 'Space and Beyond'. Fast forward to 2002 and 4 recordings first appeared on WAY OUT WEST: ESSENTIAL WESTERN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION VOLUME TWO, those being The Comancheros, The Hallelujah Trail, The Scalphunters and The Shootist. Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild are from Silva's JAZZ IN FILM cd.
The remaining tracks were all newly recorded for this release. They are of course the strongest tracks, seeing as the City of Prague Philharmonic has improved over time. I do wonder though why they did not include the older arrangements of Great Escape and Mag. Seven as bonus tracks.
I also recommend the simultaneously released '40 years of Film Music: Jerry Goldsmith' for another great set honoring a late great film composer.
Great Film Music.......2007-03-09
This is a great recording of some of the best film music ever. From the
great westerns to the Theme from Airplane to music he did for television,
Bernstein was one of the greatest.
Fun, Powerfull music.......2007-02-17
It's great! It brings back memories of my dad. He loved John Wayne and the old cowboys of the Magnificent Seven. But it's nice just to listen and relax (it's not all cowboy music).

Disappointed.......2006-08-07
The CD was not from the Original movie scores. It was mostly orchestrated music. Overall I was very disappointed in the CD.
Great titles poorly played. Sorry, Duke..........2005-01-24
How can you go wrong with the great list of movie themes listed in this CD? Well, the City of Prague Philharmnic has recorded lifeless "Lawrence Welk" versions of some of the most exciting film music ever composed. I excitedly bought this compilation - but upon hearing each piece of music bite the dust, I became more and more angered. These recordings are sloppy and do not do justice to these many wonderful themes.
A GREAT C.D........2003-07-19
i`ve waited a long time for this C.d. Its great. FYI...The complete soundtrack for RIO GRANDE AND THE SEARCHERS ARE BOTH AVAILABLE ON THE NET. THEIR BOTH GREAT TOO.
Great music from a legend........2002-09-09
The only reason this is 4 stars is that there should have been more. What about Liberty Valence, Big Jake, North to Alaska, The Shootist, Chisum, Hondo, Wake of the Red Witch, Reap the Wild Wind, etc.
There are millions of John Wayne fans! Is anyone listening out there!
Otherwise, this CD is a must for John Wayne fans.

Being a John Wayne fan since I was a kid inticed me into purchasing this CD. It's great! The orchestrationals by the City of Prague Philharmonic Music was really great. It really brought back fond memories of my watching "The Duke" on the big silver screen when I was young, and today when I'm watching him on my CD's. I do share one thought with one of the previous reviewers though, I would have like this to have been a "double" CD, to include many of the "Duke's" other great films as well.

Customer Reviews:
Homage to Elmer Bernstein.......2007-01-20
Film music is today a genre just as important as other previous types of music such as baroque, classical, romantic, jazz... and Elmer Bernstein is a truly great composer. His works are both rich and complete and while intricately detailed they are also, paradoxically, beautifully simple. Nowadays, however, it appears difficult for the younger generation to appreciate the full extent of his talent. Melodies are no longer fashionable and young people no longer have the same listening potential. Today's modern music is somewhat limited to rather ordinary orchestral harmonisation (if any), thudding electronic sounds and a general lack of musical culture. This is, no doubt, resulting directly from the monotonous banging sounds played on radio and TV as a result of purely economic interests involved in the production of easy, basic music which is so popular today. Just listen to some of today's contemporary music and you become aware of the exaggerated loud bass, the absence of any memorable melodies (if by chance there are any lyrics, they are elementary and often badly performed) and an almost total absence of harmonisation, all of this swamped by a deafening percussion beating at an extremely boring regular tempo ! Nowadays anyone can do anything in the name of music. What happens when such music is transposed onto the screen ? It by no means enriches the images we see, it simply overshadows them. This is, in fact, just the opposite of what film music is intended for. Moreover, most of the sounds in such music are electronic or electric, often resulting in deformed sounds which young people hear eventually making them unable to appreciating the true quality of simple acoustic sounds or of a four note chord, and let's not talk about digital recordings making such interpretations sound so empty. What is better than listening to the natural sound of an analogical recording : it takes us closer to rhythm, movement, nature and people ! This is, no doubt, why Elmer Bernstein's music is so different - it is but the opposite of most of today's dull and boring music. It is so much alive, created thanks to his gift in music, his love of music and his search for perfection. He composed it not only so that it merged with the film it was written for but mostly to add to the emotions it evokes. Better still, Elmer Bernstein's compositions become even richer when heard with the actual film. It shows the lively interaction that exist between both of them : the music is essential to the film which in turn is essential to the music. The composer brings together technical and complex elements to create orchestrations with ultimate grace and lightness which are characteristics of both his professionalism and his originality. He is a Master of the art of musical composition. For a lot of different reasons his works are true models for the future generations of listeners, composers and instrumentalists to follow. In my own opinion, the essential characteristics of his work are in the wonderful harmony of the strings, the wind instruments and the percussion and the exchanges between the melodies, counterpoints and rhythm sections, all done so naturally, so smoothly and so harmoniously. Elmer Bernstein has definitely established his own « school » of music, creating an example which was followed by many film music composers all around the world : the perfect and seventh chords, the atypical rhythm, the violin E-string played in unison, the rapid and staccato in the brass section, the superb richness of the sound (made by using the timbre and other characteristics of the instruments which merge perfectly together), the changes in key as unexpected as spontaneous, the rhythm breaks, the incredible accentuations, the rare instruments and inspired interpretations. When hearing the performance the listener is immediately transported into the « Bernstein sound », the « Bernstein style », the « Bernstein music ». The original sound of Elmer Bernstein will last forever and should be taught in schools and universities specialising in the music from the 20th and 21st centuries. To show our appreciation of his inventive genius, his works and his talent, which are as impressive and as vast as those of other great erudite music composers, Elmer Bernstein's name should appear on the list of the great Masters. If Mozart was alive today, I'm sure he would write film music. No doubt he too would love this great art to which Elmer Bernstein gave so many compositions and so much nobility. Should Mozart have been reincarnated perhaps his name would have been "Bernstein". I personally have been teaching music theory for fifteen years to students of all ages at a music school in France. The theory I teach and which I thought would lead to the ability to reading written music and to the understanding of what music really is, both technically and emotionally, was based mainly on Elmer Bernstein's compositions. These compositions provided me with true examples of melodic structures which are rich both in harmony and rhythm. Music should not be labelled nor appreciated according to the school in which it is categorised - classical, jazz, old or new... The concept of different musics doesn't exist, it's just Music, something merging vibrations together. Music should be felt by the instrumentalist and the listener; it should convey strong emotions. That is why I encouraged instrumentalists to play the works of Elmer Bernstein. In 1986, at the UNESCO Centre in Paris, this resulted in an orchestra consisting of young musicians, which I conducted, giving an excellent performance during the finale of a National Orchestral Competition for young French musicians. I'm sure that the music of Big Jake, True Grit, Katie Elder or many others are still alive in the memories of the young people who are now grown-ups. Elmer Bernstein's compositions, so lively and affirmative and bursting with energy and emotion, give us a true "joie de vivre" and take us sometimes into deep thoughts and meditation, and other times into sadness and nostalgia, but they always convey, and always will, an immense feeling of happiness to the listeners. American cinema, so popular world-wide for a large numbre of very sound reasons, owes much of its success to its excellent film-music composers (Bill Conti, Lalo Schifrin, Henry Mancini, John Barry, Georges Delerue, to name but a few). Elmer Bernstein has contributed to the fame and appreciation of some of the best things in American culture: talent, work, intelligence, imagination, creation, devotion, self-sacrifice, hope, sharing, generosity... love! Elmer Bernstein's music is not simply added to the film, it makes the film, it is the film! By successfully merging together so many musical influences and thanks to his immense and varied musical abilities, Elmer Bernstein's compositions reflect his true qualities and should be used as an example for everyone, whether musicians or not. By this I mean the qualities which lead to the making of great men, great musicians, and which bring out the best in us.
Many, many thanks Mr Elmer Bernstein, you will always be remembered as a true, unique example to follow.
P.S. I've never had the chance nor the opportunity to meet Mr Bernstein, but through his compositions, I feel like I have always known him.
Some of Bernstein's greats..........2006-08-24
It is good to see this music being re-released. Many years ago I purchase the 1985 Varese Sarabande out of print album, with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, that only included the music from 'True Grit' and 'The Comancheros'...the first sixteen tracks on this CD. This recording is a straight combining of those Bernstein conducted sessions, with the Orchestra, adding three more John Wayne Western movie scores..basically putting two albums on one CD. My album, of the True Grit/Comancheros tracks, has very sharp and clear orchestral sound..very good miking. It carries the grand sweeping strings and horns that never seem to get tiresome. With this being a direct recording, the True Grit/The Comancheros tracks alone make this CD a must buy. It allows film score lovers a chance to appreciated the great work that Elmer Bernstein did in the movies..especially the Western. The True Grit tracks on this album, unlike the new Tadlow Music release of the True Grit score, come very close..quite possibly indistinguishable..to being original soundtracks. It's nice to know that this great music is still available for format updating or replacing.
Pleasently Surprised.......2006-04-19
I have watched a lot of John Wayne movies and enjoyed the music in them.I took a chance and bought this CD not knowing what to expect.I was pleasently surprised that the music on this CD is very good and the quality of sound on this CD sounds very good.
Elmer Bernstein Rides Again!.......2006-04-09
In the 1980s, Mr. Bernstein conducted two spectacular digitally recorded albums with the Utah Symphony Orchestra featuring his distinctive sound for John Wayne films. Long out of print in the U.S., Varese Sarabande has at long last released both 35 minute albums on a single cd. For fans of his landmark score for "The Magnificent Seven" (also recently reissued on VS) these scores have the welcome familiarity of an old friend. Bernstein's music energized many film genres, from science fiction (Spacehunter and Heavy Metal) to drama (To Kill A Mockingbird, Age Of Innocence, Far From Heaven) to action-adventure (The Great Escape) to epics (The Ten Commandments) and comedy (Ghostbusters, Stripes, Animal House), but his most memorable scores have captured the excitement and violence of the Old West. Many of these re-recordings stand as the definitive performances of these scores. If you're looking for a introduction to the work of one of film music best composers or simply a collection of classic Western music, you'll find it all here.

Could Be His Masterpiece or Simply Just One Of Them!.......2006-04-27
As a new collector of all of David Olney's recordings I have found songs with highly original lyrics and melodies. I told David, after a recent concert in Georgia, that The Wheel is an impossible recording to listen straight through - each song is too thought provoking or too melodically rich to be played just once; not to mention the arrangements which are a perfect match with his rich deep voice. As years pass, this effort will be referred to as a milestone for all American singer/songwriters.
The Circle Game.......2005-03-08
Long before Joni Mitchell penned 'The Circle Game' the cyclic sweep of seasons, of social circumstance, of celestial movement, of love's ebbing and flowing were inspiring poets and philosophers. Observing these was the survival means of farmers and hunters. Olney's,'Wheel' manages to embrace the gamut of these observations without sounding cute, trite, or try hard. It's one of the most impeccably conceived and performed discs of recent times. In it abides a folk wisdom blended with rootsy Blues Rock conveyed with a voice that is alternatively worn and rough-hewn, sweet and romantic. None less than veteran music critic, Dave Marsh provides the warmer notes. And he does so with affectionate elan, speaking of how 'Olney's spirituality centres on a universe governed more by love than malice, in fact more by love than any other single quality.' Well, familiar grist as this might be, Marsh adds that Olney's songs give us 'life not only observed but lived at the deepest level, and conveyed to everyone who hears it with commanding artistry'. There's the gospelly,'Voices On the Water', a glorious paen to committment,'Now and Forever', the gravelly rendition of,'God Shaped Hole' and 'Boss Don't Shoot No Dice' which would reward devotees of John Hiatt. Deanie Richardson's fiddle & mandolin provide lilting commentary for the weary Civil War General's
lament,'Stonewall'. It would seam perfectly into Ken Burn's memorable movie soundtrack on that subject. This isn't a revolutionary disc by any estimation, as it follows familar grooves. But its maturity has a consolatory power which improves with each rotation.
A POET WHO CAN ROADHOUSE..........2003-11-10
David Olney continues to amaze and delight me. Every release that he brings forth contains some of the finest, insightful and poetic songwriting that exists today. He delivers his songs in a variety of styles - from gentle and reflective folk ballads to blues-influenced growlings to out-and-out roadhouse rock and roll. Each and every one of them comes across honest and full of wisdom and emotion - there's nothing contrived or false about any of them.
Olney's latest effort is full of the images of the wheel - from the title to the pictures on the cover, to various references in the lyrics, to the very programming of the cd. Heck, even the cd itself is round (what an innovation, right...?). Seriously - a lot of thought and care went into this recording, and it shows time and again during listening.
The album begins, ends, and is punctuated from time to time by short tunes that are reminiscent (as another reviewer noted) of Gregorian chant or Renaissance polyphony - which is appropriate, Olney being a modern Renaissance man if ever there was one. The final track of the album places the four previous short pieces into a round together - and the effect is stunningly beautiful and illumination. As Dave Marsh astutely points out in his notes to the cd, the track `Revolution' is - very purposefully, I'm sure - centrally placed. The rest of the program turns around it nicely. The song itself is beautiful and allegorical - I heard Olney perform live just last night at a house concert (what an excellent venue for such an artist!), and in introducing this song, he said (and I'm paraphrasing - I wasn't taking notes) `There are two types of revolutions - the natural ones, such as the earth turning around the sun, the seasons turning over the course of a year...and the type that overthrows a government. This song is about both.'
After the short opening track, `Wheels', Olney gets things moving strongly with `Big Cadillac', proudly and easily showing his love of the blues. This blues influence shows itself again in `Chained and bound to the wheel' and the raw `Boss don't shoot no dice', with its nod to Albert Einstein's comment that `God doesn't play dice with the universe' - everything has a purpose and works according to a logic that we might or might not comprehend from moment to moment.
David Olney can write a love song as well - his past recordings are full of beautiful examples of that song form, some of the most memorable I've ever come across. This album isn't lacking for them, either - `Now and forever', `Precious time, precious love', `The girl I love' and `All the love in the world'. Every song he writes is written straight from his heart - and he's never shy about letting the listener know how he feels.
`God-shaped hole' is a reference to the ideas of the French existentialists - `guys wearing berets and chain-smoking', he called them last night - and speaks of the spiritual detachment and isolation that we sometimes feel when faces with setbacks in our lives. As with many of Olney's serious tunes, it's not without an apt infusion of wry humor.
`Stonewall' is a moving look at the aftermath and horrors of war, through the eyes of a tired, saddened and world-weary Stonewall Jackson, wanting nothing more (or less) than to return to Virginia and live out his days in peace - `Let me cross over, over the river - and let me rest in the shade of the trees'.
Taken as a whole, this album works on a level to which many artists aspire and dream - it's a complete circle. I suggest spinning it over and over again - it's one of his greatest accomplishments.

While his peers are content to fade into their twilight years, the Blastmaster can't stop, won't stop. With a career now almost 20 years deep, he's still churning out LPs like he was 18. The problem is that while KRS has stayed his course, hip-hop hasn't, and there are times when he can feel anachronistic, especially since his lyrics haven't made a quantum leap forward, either stylistically or content-wise, in about a decade. That said he's still blessed with one of rap's greatest voices, as persuasive as it is authoritative. Keep Right is the most consistent of the indie albums he's put out since 2001, featuring much better production than what he's been saddled with in the recent past. He manages to punch out some solid tracks here, such as the update to his older classic "Illegal Business," the powerfully funky "Phucked," and an anthem for the old school, "Feel This." At 23 songs, it's all a little overwhelming (though many of them are short); KRS is probably just trying to live up to the album's penultimate song, "Still Spittin'." --Oliver Wang

I didn't like Keep Right album at all and i was very disappointed.
Can this man ever run out of dope material?.......2005-10-22
Krs is tha god period. has been laying it down for what almost twenty years. what other artist has a track record like that?Jst like KRS's other releases, this album is filled with dope lyrics, decen beats, and an intelligent message. Cop it to complete your KRS collection!
FELL OFF.......2005-09-05
For as long as i can remember i have been a fan of Krs-one/B.D.P.
and I have to say that this is the worst album i have heard by him. Sound wise most of these tracks sound pretty commercial and could easily be heard on the radio. Lyrically the "Teacher" that we all know and love has fallen off to a point that he may never be able to recover I mean the lyrics are downright terrible. This is a sad day for hip hop fans every where. Their is not a single song on this album that is even close to enjoyable. Lets hope that in the futre Krs can get it together and release another banger. but for now I think ill stick with SNEAK ATTACK the last truly great lyrical album
REAL HIP-HOP.......2005-07-06
I laugh when I hear Lloyd Banks, 50, Cam, and so many of today's punks is a beast. You ever hear KRS spit?! This album right here could be your introduction(if you were born in 87) to what a monster really is. If KRS had the production he could shut the f***** industry down. Spittin only the truth. A true battle mc, he comes from the battle and the dude can rock a party. Plus this album gives you more for your cash. At least 15 hot tracks and a DVD. If you new to KRS cop this, A retrospective, sex and violence,criminal-minded and the blueprint. And listen to greatness.
A Funky LP from a hip-hop Troubadour.......2005-05-23
The production values are solid here-- most cuts are helmed by KRS-One himself, spreading the love with with his immediate circle of collaborators like Choco, Commissioner Gordon and a few others also in the mix.. DJ Q-Bert of the Skratch Piklz contributes an instrumental, but there are a lack of "name" producers here, for people who check for such things-- KRS has publicly declared that his self-financed LP projects don't have the budgets to afford most of the high-profile hot producers of the moment, though surely, it would be great to get tracks from Kanye West, Dr. Dre', Neptunes, Rick Rubin, etc.
KRS started off his career on indie B-Boy/Rock Candy Records (Criminal Minded basically made the label, but financial disputes led the group to leave), then spent most of his career on Jive/Zomba (which, ironically, ended up becoming the haven for teen pop stars like Britney, NSync, Backstreet Boys, etc., all of whose LPs probably got 10 times the promotional attention his got)
After abruptly scuttling plans to release "Maximum Strength" in 1999 ("the five boroughs" from the Corruptor Soundtrack, is the only song to surface from those sessions), KRS did an A&R stint at Reprise Records in the Time-Warner system, leaving after a few years to start his Temple of Hip-Hop Ministry and Preservation Society-- His post-millenial comeback found him releasing 3 records for NY indie Koch-- the last of which found him in a promotional dispute with the label--
And now with "Keep Right" released on Boston-based indie Grit Records, KRS seems to enjoy his "free agent" status, not being tied to long-term contracts for a major label anymore..

Album Description
The Hollywood Blue Flames began life in 1975 as The Hollywood Fats Band, led by guitar phenomenon Michael "Hollywood Fats" Mann, and featuring what was arguably the best traditional blues line-up this side of 1954 - the multi-talented Al Blake on harmonica and vocals, legendary bassist Larry Taylor from Canned Heat, veteran drummer Richard Innes, and featuring Lloyd Glenn protege Fred Kaplan on piano. Sadly, Fats passed away unexpectedly in 1986, and the band members all went on to other successful musical ventures.
Now they've reunited for one of the most anticipated blues releases in years, under the banner The Hollywood Blue Flames - appropriately named, as they both fired and carry the torch of the blues into a new millennium. And to fill the huge musical shoes of Fats, no one could be a better choice than Kirk Fletcher, a young man who was literally raised on the sounds pioneered by the original incarnation of this band. Fletcher plays with the taste and power that truly does justice to not only this band's illustrious legacy but also the blues masters who inspired them.
The Hollywood Blue Flames literally burn their way through a set of fresh originals sprinkled with well-chosen covers on their new CD "Soul Sanctuary." This is blues with both a history and a future - and it's as fresh as today. It doesn't get any better than The Hollywood Blue Flames.

Too Cool West Coast Blues.......2006-09-23
I also stumbled upon this CD and thought I had found the Holy Grail. You can smell the smoke and taste the gin when listening to this disk. The rhythm section is rock solid, the guitar work outstanding and the interplay between the guitar and piano is just mesmerizing to me. I really enjoy the harmonica and vocal stylings too. It's just an outstanding CD and I can't stop listening to it. I would highly recommend you give this a try, the Road to Rio disk and the Hollywood Fats recordings - you won't regret it.
Where have I been?.......2006-09-09
This is another album I luckily stumbled upon. If you want hip hop, this probably is not for you, unless you have finally come to your musical senses. If you've had life experiences they sing about ( within reason, of course...I mean, who has been "born on a mountain, raised in a lion's den"?, it makes the songs more personal and special.
My favorites:
Coco Puffin' ( the sample doesn't include the soul stirring guitar work of Kirk Fletcher...maybe you can listen to the whole song from an online music service)

This Is A Great Album!.......2005-05-20
This is a great album in the west coast and Chicago style blues. The band is the late Hollywood Fat's band (Hollywood Fats = Michael Mann) with Kirk Fletcher on guitar. Al Blake on vocals, harmonica & guitar, Richard Innes on drums, Fred Kaplan piano & organ, Larry Taylor bass. Kirk Fletcher is a superb guitar player and this album is a must have if you like guitar players like Ronnie Earl, Dave Specter, Alex Schultz & Steve Freund! The rest of the guys are as good as it can get!

Just incase you are just gettin into E-40.......2006-04-04
Those of us in the Bay have been slappin this s*** for years, This CD is a classic. You can listen to it straight through over and over and maybe hear where some of your favorite rapper's got their slang from.
E-40.......2005-08-10
Unbelieveable, amazing, E-40 is the best that ever done it. If you buy this CD you will not be disappointent.
Different... but it's still good!.......2005-06-26
This album shows a big change in E-40's style - mainly in terms of the production. On this one - Rick Rock handles a major part of the beats - 7 out of 16 songs. Some of his beats are great, and some are kind of weak. Lyrically, y'all know where E-40 is at. He keeps coming out with some new slang (sometimes a little but too much, but it's all good!), and those fast flows (which makes his sound off-beat at times). But the thing is - E-40 spits nothing but game. I think the best songs on the album are "Pimps, Hustlas" (An AWESOME beat by Tone Capone, great verses by 40 Water and a remarkable guest appearence by Levitti - best song on the album, so addictive!), "Fallin' Rain" (a laid-back song, with a classic R&B sample, produced by Rick Rock, where 40 talks about his life), "The Slap", "It's a Man's game" (the hardest songs on the album, both produced by Rick Rock"), "Mustard and Mayonaise". And you gotta mention "Rep Your City" - the club banger of the album. It's got a very good beat by Lil' Jon, and all rappers (E-40, Petey Pablo, Bun B and Eightball) deliver tight verses, but all that screaming and shouting by Lil' Jon is getting way too annoying!! Without it, the song would be perfect... There are quite a few other songs worth mentioning, showing that this is another VERY solid record by Charlie Hustle. Only about 3 or 4 songs out of the 16 are not that good. Producers include Rick Rock, Tone Capone, Bosko, Mike Dean, Mike Mosley & Sam Bostic and a few others. As I said earlier, E-40 changed his style on this album quite a bit, and fans that has been following him since his "Federal" days (like myself) will miss the Mobb Sound, but it's still a very good album. With 40, it's all about consistancy and quality - he's been in the game since the late 80's and he never fell off.
Unique In Tha Game.......2004-04-24
E-40 delivers a solid album in "Grit and Grind." He made a smart decision in using "Automatic" as the first single. He and Fabolous contrast well with 40's slang-filled flow and Fab's cut-throat style. "Whomp Whomp" and "'Til the Dawn" have good collaborations from the Bay Area's finest and "Slap" provides a good opening and solo flow from E-40. Towards the last tracks, the album loses some of its fire in "End of the World," "Pimps, Hustlas," and "Fallin' Rain." I was also somewhat disappointed in "Roll On" featuring Afroman. There was not much rap on the track, but that could have been 40's intention to end his song wit just tha music playing. Overall, E-40 shows he is unique in the game with his one-of-a-kind slang, metaphors, and comparisons and proves that he could be da best artist in the Bay Area.
Da Beat Keeps Knockin Down my Rearview Mirror, literally !!!.......2004-03-23
This cd is tight, just another tight , off da hinges, cd from da dirty yay area. Vallejo should in da record books, compton has talent, but not as much as da v-town. i love this CD, my fav. 5 are The Slap, Roll On, LIfestyles, They don't F**k Wit Us, and It's All Gravity. HE features a lot of peeps: b-legit, suga free, afroman, petey pablo, fabolous, just 2 name a few.

Barbed wire lyrics wrapped around whisky and gravel vocals.......2002-09-05
His sound? Barbed wire lyrics wrapped around whisky and gravel vocals. Hints of Springsteen, Earle and Lucinda Williams abound. But it's the wallop of soul in his passionate vocals and the earthy groove of his melodies that give Picott his own distinct sound.
He's just beginning to hit his stride as a writer; Slaid Cleaves took their co-write "Broke Down" to No.1 on the Americana charts. He's a narrative storyteller tapped into the trials and tribulations of the working class. He intuitively understands heartache, desperation, joy and small hopes (small, not inconsequential) ignore class boundaries. And because of that, his characters possess a certain nobility, a dignified humanity that belies their bleak circumstances. Plus the man can turn a phrase like nobody's business.
Give this man a listen, he's poised to become America's next great songwriter.
