With this giddily entertaining show, David Yazbek confirms that The Full Monty wasn't a fluke--few on Broadway can equal his melodic verve and lyrical cleverness. Based on the 1988 movie of the same name, the show deals with a pair of con artists swindling rich women on the French Riviera. Lithgow brings debonair charm to the Michael Caine part, while Norbert Leo Butz (Wicked) proves to be a comic dynamo in the Steve Martin part. And Yazbek provides them with an array of catchy tunes (adorned in beautiful Bacharach-style arrangements by Harold Wheeler). Butz goes ballistic on the hilarious "Great Big Stuff," which demolishes conspicuous consumption, then pairs up with feisty leading lady Sherie Rene Scott on "Love Is My Legs," a wicked sendup of Celine Dionstyle torch epics. Meanwhile, Lightgow nails the tender ballad "Love Sneaks In." A delicious jazz reprise of "Nothing Is Too Wonderful to Be True" by Scott and pianist Bill Charlap shows that Yazbek's songs don't need flashy pizzazz to be memorable. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars The lyrics are great.......2007-07-23

While missing a totally hummable tune the songs are still memorable and the lyrics in this show are histerical ....

4 out of 5 stars Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.......2007-01-03

Norbert Leo Butz is absolutely amazing once again and once again Sheree Renee Scott is a usual disappointment. But one of the bonus tracks she actually sounds alright.

1 out of 5 stars DULL DULL DULL.......2006-07-24

I haven't seen the show, but I certainly hope it works better on stage with visuals than it does listening to this tepid CD. Not a memorable note of music in the entire score.

4 out of 5 stars Such an awesome musical, but it wasn't the cast I saw, but a great soundtrack!.......2006-06-13

I loved this musical when I went to see it in late March of 2006. It's based off the movie with Steve Martin and Michael Kain.

I think EVERYONE in this original cast is PERFECTLY suited for their part. John Lithgow does a great job at being the haughty, elegant, charming and educated British con man. Norbert Leo Butz will make you laugh your a** off with his crass humor, and he just brings it ALL out in "Great Big Stuff" singing about how he wants to be rich! Sherie Rene Scott is a fantastic Broadway singer, and she's perfect as the sweet, innocent, ditzy American blonde (or is she? hmmm?) While she acts ditzy, her voice is big, telling everyone "Here I Am," making everyone so happy. Joanne Gleason really kicks it with her snooty little role as a rich American woman who, while a bit uneducated, gives each song an attitude! Gregory Jbara is a perfect, snooty Frenchman, always looking out for master Lawrence Jameson (John Lithgow).

Great musical. If you've seen the movie, see the musical, then buy the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Good old dirty rotten fun.......2006-04-29

At first, I borrowed this from the library because I love Norbert Leo Butz. He was very good in Wicked, but the part of Freddy Benson seems made for him. I can't wait to see the show; the entire cast is amazing. Some of my favorite tracks:
-Great Big Stuff
-All About Ruprecht
-Here I Am
-Ruffhousin' mit Shuffhausen
-The More We Dance
-Love is my Legs
-Dirty Rotten Number

All three of the leads are completely at ease in their parts, even though John Lithgow and Sherie Rene Scott have since moved on. If you like good old-fashioned comedy, this is a show for you!

5 out of 5 stars Big Boi goin' solo.......2004-06-22

Big Boi shows he can do it without Andre 3000 on "The Way You Move", his 1st single off Speakerboxx. The beat is ill: the pulsing bass beat is simple but effective. When Big Boi isn't dropping a tight verse, Sleepy Brown is singinga latinized hook complete with horns and the catchy phrase "I Like the way you move", guaranteed to make you sing along. Too bad Andre 3000 is nowhere to be found, but I guess that's the whole point of Speakerboxx/The Love below, but anyway, Big Boi's solo project is a major sucess.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE OUTKAST.......2004-04-14

1 out of 5 stars he lost it a long time ago.......2003-11-14

I was never really a big Silkk the Shocker fan, but I had to apllaud him for his 2nd album Charge it 2 da Game. Unfortunately, after Made Man No Limit fell off. Silkk is quite simply a copycat. There is not a unique track on the album. The tracks seem to be copied from previous Cash Money albums. Silkk annoys me because sometimes he is trying to be a thug and on other occasions he is preaching nonviolence and doing boy-girl collabos. Which one is it Silkk?
The only real rappers on No Lmit were C-Murder, Mac, and Soulja Slim. Unfortunately C-Murder and Mac are on lock down and Slim is no longer with No limit. You should hear Slim's new album Years later a few months after. He said that he saw Silkk in a victoria's secret catalogue! P should give it up. He can't survive without Mac and C-Murder.

3 out of 5 stars Ok, Its time for a new era of no limit music.......2003-07-04

This is Silk The Shockers 4th album. This album was the start of and era of that bling bling style of no limit rap. But don't get me wrong he makes it work on the song '' Thats Cool'' featuring Trina , and to mess the paper chasin cash money attitude in the mix he has '' Haters'', a song about how people hate on him because of what he has. Both songs are great. But whats strange is that this album has very little guest apperances on it and Master P isn't even on a single track. In a way its bad and in a way its good. Silk also brings a little west coast in with '' Pop Lockin'' featuring Snoop Dog. This LP is ok but could have been better. It seems Silk tries to force himself into being a thug or like being a Ja Rule with a thug mentaility and then having a bubble gum pop rap song like '' I wish''on the album. This LP is ok but to some people it will just be another replayed no limit trashed element to try to stick with the consumers pleasures. Silk needs the guest appearnces but with 23 songs and most of Silk rappin, it makes it a pain to try to listen to all of it.

3 out of 5 stars "Sugar" by any other name would be ..........2006-06-14

This is the London production of the Jule Styne musical "Sugar".

The story was taken from the 1959 Marilyn Munroe Movie, with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon - but the songs were all original Styne/Merrill numbers.

"Sugar" (the character played by Munroe in the original movie) is a musician who encounters two fellow female musicians. The catch is that they are really men, who have adopted female disguises in a desperate attempt to escape gangsters who want to eliminate them because they have witnessed a gangland slaying.

Much of the appeal of the original movie comes from Miss Munroe's "sexy innocence" - and the fine score by Adolph Deutsch. The musical is frankly not really Jule Styne at his best, although the score does have its moments. Tommy Steele is a bit of an acquired taste too.

One for collectors who want to have their Jule Styne complete (especially if you can't find a copy of the Broadway Version - "Sugar") rather than something you'd rush out to buy, really, but enjoyable enough if you can put Marilyn Munroe and the original (and infinitely better) movie out of your mind.

Aage Haugland is fantastic, also as a narrator, but the tempos are way too fast on this recording. This is not what Stravinsky wrote. All the marches are written in tempo 112 and this is more like 120!! The recorded sound is very good and the musicians are excellent.

Contemporary folk/pop singer-songwriters and CLAWD Records recording artists THE WINSTONS follow up their first release (1995's Second Chance) with VIGNETTES, released July 10, 1998.

Originally from Buffalo, New York, ANDY and CHERYL WINSTON met and began playing music together in the 1980's while attending college in nearby Fredonia, New York. They later married and relocated to Boulder, Colorado. After languishing in unsatisfying careers, THE WINSTONS recommited themselves to music, leading to the release in 1995 of their first CD, Second Chance, produced by Lance Bendiksen, which received warm reviews.

Wanting to challenge themselves both as musicians and as interpreters of their own work, THE WINSTONS decided to try their hands at producing their next project.

Lyrically, the ten self-produced cuts on VIGNETTES offer glimpses of life's grist: release ("Anything At All"), following one's bliss ("Finding My Way"), fearing love ("Heart of Stone"), wanderlust ("Caroline & Ray"), renewal ("Iris Alley") and resignation ("Vignettes").

Musically, VIGNETTES covers a range of styles, which ANDY and CHERYL attribute to their families' varied record collections and a healthy dose of attention deficit disorder. Americana, pop, country and bluegrass coexist peacefully on VIGNETTES.

Returning to back THE WINSTONS on VIGNETTES are veterans of the Second Chance sessions: drummer/percussionist Christian Teele and bassists Eric Thorin and Ron Bland.

Special musical guests appearing on VIGNETTES include Grammy-winning slide guitarist and Sugar Hill recording artist Sally Van Meter of the bluegrass group The Good Ol' Persons, keyboardist Tom Capek from the jazz combo Dotsero, and electric guitarist Mark Kranjcec, formerly of the alternative band Old Soul.

It was in 1990 I first heard the Ruminators opening for Tempest, if I recall. They had a very unique sound that really grooved. Soft, airy, but down to earth. I bought their first CD and loved it, especially their remake of the Beatles "You Can't Do That," which is one of the very few times that someone has done a better job of a remake.

This new album is most excellent, and they sound excellent. The songs flow together quite nicely and it's a real pleasure to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Duo brings sounds of love to airy folk creations.......1999-10-10

Independent songsmiths offer what those who have gone on to record with big name studios cannot. Namely, music that sounds almost live and true to the performing arts. That has never been more truer than with the ruminators who vocals, harmonies and hooks need no production value to sound good. This is contempory folk on the lighter side. Mostly rousing balads and songs of new-found love, there is much to spur you on to a better mood. Listen and enjoy.

        4 out of 5 stars what a treat..........1999-03-14

what an absolute, tasty little treat. its smart, funny, and sometimes wonderfully crude. though sarita choudhury is billed first on most reviews & press, naveen andrews steals the show--its his film, all the way. and hes utterly beautiful--again, even as a citified drugstore cowboy. this movie abounds w/ exceedingly bad hats & seedy western wear, and "dude" is said a few too many times; but it seems that attwood is using these devices as affect, not as a british understanding of country music & its culture, but rather, as a way to contrast southall & londons tightly packed markets with the big sky & wide open places so revered in country. here, in _wild west_, you even find cheatin', drinkin', love for mama, & a porch-dog (whos a little star in his own right), as well as intersting use of the word "redneck." thanks to the (wonderful) exploitation of that nebulous musical genre known as "alternative country," _wild west_ maintains a refreshing obscurity (contrary to the above review, there is, thank god, no garth brooks on the soundtrack). the only morsel missing is willie nelsons "mamas, dont let your babies grow up to be cowboys," which would have said it all.

5 out of 5 stars Off the beaten path comedy.......1998-12-31

One of the best indy-type films I have seen in a long while. If you like non-formula films, then see this one. The cast is first rate-- anyone remember Kip from 'The English Patient'? The writing is excellent, and it always hits the right mark when searching for a laugh. One of my favorites!
