"Sham and The Professor deliver a solid underground entry with an easy flowing track and thoughtful lyrics.
Product Description
The Devil's Playground is the product of Keith "Sham" Gill and Sean "The Professor Elesse" Skolnick. It uses hard beats, hooks and lyrics to transcend into a journey through the life and times of Coney Island without the glitz and glamour of the Oceanside. From the melodic chimes of "Coney Violinz," to the verbal usage of the alphabet in "Walking Dictionary," the Devil's Playground is a hard-hitting hip-hop album with a fresh old school flare. It is what hip-hop once was, story telling at its finest.

Those rankled by the seeming cynicism of Billy Idol willfully re-embracing the vintage, hit-making sonic cliches of "Dancing With Myself" and Rebel Yell should look on the bright side: It could have been Flock of Seagulls instead. Stepping back into the spotlight with veteran guitarist Steve Stevens and producer Keith Forsey (key architects of Idol's career-making hits) again in the fold, the now 50-something Rock of the '80s icon offers up a slate of fist-pumping, not-so-new wave here that manages to echo the original's sound and fury--and more than a few of its faux rock rebellion cliches. With a voice that no longer particularly strains to sound like nine yards of beef gristle, Idol gnaws and gnashes his way through rawk-hard anthems like "Scream" with improbable conviction, abetted as on "Rat Race" and "Super Overdrive" by the familiar, careening metallic fretwork of Stevens. A left-field cover of the goofy trucker's lament "Plastic Jesus" argues the lads are still all-too-human, yet "Lady Do or Die" proves there's still a little seductive purr lurking 'round the Idol tonsils, with Stevens gratifyingly making more like Brian Setzer than hair-band Hercules in the bargain. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
This is really a very good album.......2007-07-01
This album stays true to that which is Billy Idol but with new songs that just happen to very very good.
I thoroughly enjoyed this album and would recommend it to anyone. There are a couple of rockers that really deliver.
average album for nostalgics only..........2007-04-30
What we do get however is a bunch of jams and strangely, a thinner Billy Idol sound. Nice to see Billy back in action - he probably kicks butt on tour. Maybe next time - a better studio album!
Screw "American Idol": This is the REAL Idol!!!.......2007-02-17
Ranks with Billy's best.......2006-12-16
The first 2 songs are great rockers with "World Coming Down" kinda punk sounding. "Plastic Jesus" is bluesy sounding and makes me laugh every time I listen to it. I never get tired of it. "Scream" could probably be descibed as closest to Rebel Yell/White Wedding sounding. It's got that nice little chugging break in the middle that brings it down a bit before ratcheting it back up again. "Lady Do or Die" is more like Eyes Without a Face or Sweet Sixteen, a good pop song. And some might think this wierd, but it works - "Cherie" sounds like one of Neil Diamond's really good songs from the 60s. "Summer Running" is just a very good song and a nice way to end the album.
Way to go Billy. Let's hope there's still more to come in the future.
Lame Modern Production Makes This Sound Like Any Other Pup's Pap.......2006-11-16
The first track, "Super Overdrive" is a prime example of this. A mountain of guitar and drums slams and chugs along, and the chorus is totally mediocre. A bad way to kick off an album.
"World Comin' Down"... hmm, I don't like this overwrought attempt at sounding like one of those daft new 'punk' bands. C'mon, Billy... you were in Generation X. That band could craft a pop-punk classic 'a plenty, so why go for the shoddy approach employed by the kids? Do it the good way, not the new way.
"Rat Race"... trip-hop beats meet subtle picking and a sudden rush of power guitar. Bad.
"Sherri": Repetitive but cute.
"Plastic Jesus": Trip-hop beat and country with mischevous quasi-religious overtones. I could've thrown the CD out halfway through this track.
"Scream": A rather cliche throwback to the Rebel Yell days, but after all the pap we've put up with, it's refreshing and comforting. Maybe he hasn't totally lost it...
"Yellin' At the X-Mas Tree": At first, it's weird to have a holiday track on here. Then, you dig the melody, chorus and the gaudy bells. After that, you listen to the story underneath the jingling; it's rather depressing, since it pretty much deals with a father's drunken antics during Christmas. In a weird way, it's got a bit of feeling in the storyline and it carries the most emotional weight.
"Romeo's Waiting": The exact same guitar line as Morrissey's "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful." A rather dumb chorus, too.
"Body Snatcher": A bit of an unexpected track that seems to mesh a Halloween-ish macabre twist (a la Bauhaus) with a rather aggressive bassline and guitar. A winner, since it's so edgy and off-the-wall (particularly when compared to the rest of the missteps that marr the album).
"Evil Eye": A dark and groovy bassline dominates this track. The lyrics seem to deal with some sort of fortuneteller. The chorus then brings some new-music-style overdrive and overdramatic vocals. Good constant bassline, though.
"Lady Do Or Die": Country? No.
"Cherrie": A peppy acoustic number, with clapping and sunny lyrics. Quite bright and stripped down.
"Summer Running": 2/3 of the track consist of idyllic acoustic guitar work and lyrics of love and loss of a certain someone's company after the end of summer. And then the other third is an uber-loud guitar superimposed by a half-baked intense techno rhythm. What the hell happened?
Overall, as you can see, there are about 6 really agreeable tracks on here. The other 7 seem to be either mediocre or absolute [...]. Idol works best when working on his own edgy terms and when he reliquinshes pretentions of modernity. Just do your own thing, whether it involves a softer sound or a more meanacing approach. By trying to chart the waters graced by current clowns, you only degrade the quality of your own merits.
If you're a harcore Billy Idol fan and if you don't mind wadding through a slew of tripe in order to find a few gems, buy this album. If you're a casual fan, stick to the Greatest Hits compilation or Rebel Yell.

What this is, is Slicey Dice's finest CD yet! It seriously kicks ass! Check out track 27 ("Beat Dat B*tch Down") and listen how precise his riffs are, elegantly counterpointed against the sly scatting of Lil Prick's syncopated falsetto dirge, taking you deeper into modern urban alienation than any rapper since Killer G. (Rest in peace, Killer, and know that your death will be avenged.)
In short, if you don't buy this album now, you're a punk*ss little p*ssy who deserves to get slapped down hard.

Oh man... Billy is BACK!.......2005-04-25
All of Billy's previous efforts followed the same pattern... a couple of knock-you-down great tunes, a couple of so-so tracks and a bunch of filler. Not this time. This one rocks from beginning to end, slowing down only for a couple of acoustic-but-still-rockin' ballads and one countryish song. Don't laugh - the song, "Plastic Jesus," brings to mind the Stones at their country best - somewhere between "Dead Flowers" and "Faraway Eyes."
All told, there are more great riffs, hooks and lyrics on this disc than you'll find on all of his previous solo efforts. If you're a fan of any kind of hard rock (well, except maybe you nü-metal dorks), then check this out. You won't be disappointed.
