"Sham and The Professor deliver a solid underground entry with an easy flowing track and thoughtful lyrics.

Product Description
The Devil's Playground is the product of Keith "Sham" Gill and Sean "The Professor Elesse" Skolnick. It uses hard beats, hooks and lyrics to transcend into a journey through the life and times of Coney Island without the glitz and glamour of the Oceanside. From the melodic chimes of "Coney Violinz," to the verbal usage of the alphabet in "Walking Dictionary," the Devil's Playground is a hard-hitting hip-hop album with a fresh old school flare. It is what hip-hop once was, story telling at its finest.

Those rankled by the seeming cynicism of Billy Idol willfully re-embracing the vintage, hit-making sonic cliches of "Dancing With Myself" and Rebel Yell should look on the bright side: It could have been Flock of Seagulls instead. Stepping back into the spotlight with veteran guitarist Steve Stevens and producer Keith Forsey (key architects of Idol's career-making hits) again in the fold, the now 50-something Rock of the '80s icon offers up a slate of fist-pumping, not-so-new wave here that manages to echo the original's sound and fury--and more than a few of its faux rock rebellion cliches. With a voice that no longer particularly strains to sound like nine yards of beef gristle, Idol gnaws and gnashes his way through rawk-hard anthems like "Scream" with improbable conviction, abetted as on "Rat Race" and "Super Overdrive" by the familiar, careening metallic fretwork of Stevens. A left-field cover of the goofy trucker's lament "Plastic Jesus" argues the lads are still all-too-human, yet "Lady Do or Die" proves there's still a little seductive purr lurking 'round the Idol tonsils, with Stevens gratifyingly making more like Brian Setzer than hair-band Hercules in the bargain. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars This is really a very good album.......2007-07-01

I used to wish that certain musical genres would continue on, and not die out. For example, the swing music of the 40's was incredible, why didn't music continue to be written in this style?

This album stays true to that which is Billy Idol but with new songs that just happen to very very good.

I thoroughly enjoyed this album and would recommend it to anyone. There are a couple of rockers that really deliver.

3 out of 5 stars average album for nostalgics only..........2007-04-30

Like most people here - I was looking forward to a return to form by the man Billy - but let's be honest, edgier bands have since stepped to the fore. Though none will replace Billy's signature sound, this one felt a little indistinctive. The snarl is there, but the songwriting isn't quite up to par. I wasn't wowed by this effort at all and this ain't no Rebel Yell part II. Meaning: the melodies that propelled Billy to hit status are pretty absent.

What we do get however is a bunch of jams and strangely, a thinner Billy Idol sound. Nice to see Billy back in action - he probably kicks butt on tour. Maybe next time - a better studio album!

5 out of 5 stars Screw "American Idol": This is the REAL Idol!!!.......2007-02-17

Honestly, I always thought Billy Idol was too talented to be dumped on the same scrap heap as other '80s heroes. Besides, he had one of the greatest secret weapons in rock, guitarist Steve Stevens, by his side. "Devil's Playground" thankfully proved me right. It took a while for him to get the album together, but the wait was more than worth it. It's a prehistoric glory roar from one of rock's greatest voices, boasting Billy's strongest and most consistent set of songs ever, IMO. Sure "Rebel Yell" and "Whiplash Smile" had more hits, but they were also plagued by filler. Here, it's all killer, no filler. Billy is in fine voice throughout, though his pipes have gotten noticeably deeper from his glory days. Stevens, as usual, simply shreds. How this guy isn't ranked among the world's very best guitarists, I'll never know. I'll also never know why "Devil's Playground" wasn't the commercial smash it deserved to be. Tastes change, I guess, but great rock will never die--and, make no mistake, "Devil's Playground" is GREAT rock.

5 out of 5 stars Ranks with Billy's best.......2006-12-16

Plainly, this album rocks and is fun, somethings we could use a little more of these days considering the lame (crybaby, whining)rock output of the past 15 years. At least 9 of the 13 songs are good/great songs. For me anymore, it's hard to get something new that has more than 3 songs I like. I like that Billy stayed true to his sound (and style). They aren't soundalikes of his old songs but they contain what I liked best about Billy, great rocking songs, even some punk sounding stuff, a few good pop songs, and a sense of humor thrown in.

The first 2 songs are great rockers with "World Coming Down" kinda punk sounding. "Plastic Jesus" is bluesy sounding and makes me laugh every time I listen to it. I never get tired of it. "Scream" could probably be descibed as closest to Rebel Yell/White Wedding sounding. It's got that nice little chugging break in the middle that brings it down a bit before ratcheting it back up again. "Lady Do or Die" is more like Eyes Without a Face or Sweet Sixteen, a good pop song. And some might think this wierd, but it works - "Cherie" sounds like one of Neil Diamond's really good songs from the 60s. "Summer Running" is just a very good song and a nice way to end the album.

Way to go Billy. Let's hope there's still more to come in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Lame Modern Production Makes This Sound Like Any Other Pup's Pap.......2006-11-16

Admittedly, the Idol and Stevens combo can dish out a hell out of a tune. However, by hopping on today's trends, the duo have created an effort that sees many of it's tracks mired by a ham-handed stab at modernity.

The first track, "Super Overdrive" is a prime example of this. A mountain of guitar and drums slams and chugs along, and the chorus is totally mediocre. A bad way to kick off an album.

"World Comin' Down"... hmm, I don't like this overwrought attempt at sounding like one of those daft new 'punk' bands. C'mon, Billy... you were in Generation X. That band could craft a pop-punk classic 'a plenty, so why go for the shoddy approach employed by the kids? Do it the good way, not the new way.

"Rat Race"... trip-hop beats meet subtle picking and a sudden rush of power guitar. Bad.

"Sherri": Repetitive but cute.

"Plastic Jesus": Trip-hop beat and country with mischevous quasi-religious overtones. I could've thrown the CD out halfway through this track.

"Scream": A rather cliche throwback to the Rebel Yell days, but after all the pap we've put up with, it's refreshing and comforting. Maybe he hasn't totally lost it...

"Yellin' At the X-Mas Tree": At first, it's weird to have a holiday track on here. Then, you dig the melody, chorus and the gaudy bells. After that, you listen to the story underneath the jingling; it's rather depressing, since it pretty much deals with a father's drunken antics during Christmas. In a weird way, it's got a bit of feeling in the storyline and it carries the most emotional weight.

"Romeo's Waiting": The exact same guitar line as Morrissey's "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful." A rather dumb chorus, too.

"Body Snatcher": A bit of an unexpected track that seems to mesh a Halloween-ish macabre twist (a la Bauhaus) with a rather aggressive bassline and guitar. A winner, since it's so edgy and off-the-wall (particularly when compared to the rest of the missteps that marr the album).

"Evil Eye": A dark and groovy bassline dominates this track. The lyrics seem to deal with some sort of fortuneteller. The chorus then brings some new-music-style overdrive and overdramatic vocals. Good constant bassline, though.

"Lady Do Or Die": Country? No.

"Cherrie": A peppy acoustic number, with clapping and sunny lyrics. Quite bright and stripped down.

"Summer Running": 2/3 of the track consist of idyllic acoustic guitar work and lyrics of love and loss of a certain someone's company after the end of summer. And then the other third is an uber-loud guitar superimposed by a half-baked intense techno rhythm. What the hell happened?

Overall, as you can see, there are about 6 really agreeable tracks on here. The other 7 seem to be either mediocre or absolute [...]. Idol works best when working on his own edgy terms and when he reliquinshes pretentions of modernity. Just do your own thing, whether it involves a softer sound or a more meanacing approach. By trying to chart the waters graced by current clowns, you only degrade the quality of your own merits.

If you're a harcore Billy Idol fan and if you don't mind wadding through a slew of tripe in order to find a few gems, buy this album. If you're a casual fan, stick to the Greatest Hits compilation or Rebel Yell.

Happy Devils day satanist. I don't know about the world coming to an end but since it's 6/6/06 I dedided to review another cd from one of the most santanic rap groups I know of THE THREE 6 MAFIA (cue the spooky music). Anyway this a solo cd from another member that they fell out with and kicked him out of the group. The triple six seems to loose there best members. This is a great release by the koopst n!gga. It has that mystic styles sound. Being that is was released when the triple six where completly unknown and undergroud. It very atmospheric and the title THE DEVILS PLAYGROUND (cue spooky music again) fits it perfectly. There are know upbeat or pop tunes on this it is completly criptic, and very dark. But, it manages to be very catchy. Koopa raps in this devilish slash bone thugs voice which made him and Lord Infamous and Gangsta Boo or how she was known in those days as the devils daughter (hey its 666 I had to throw that in). Unfortunatly they are no longer in the group. Most people will not know of them because they aren't around for all the pop songs like stay fly and poppin my coller. They where better in the 666 days. This album is a 4 and a half. If you a fan of the triple six definitaly buy. If want to here something different pick it up it will not diapoint. If you like this try to find the underground cds and since it is 6/6/06 the titles fit COME WITH ME TO HELL PT.1, DA EXORCIST, AND LORD INFAMOUS LORD OF TERROR. Happy devils and maybe I'll see you tommorow if we all don't die today and the antichrist gets all. Peace

4 out of 5 stars Styles of the ancient mutalations.......2004-02-20

Koops first album, its a great cd. I am highly impressed that it even sold as many copies as it did because the sound quality is really low budget. However that doesnt stop Koop from tearing the cd up. The only reason i didnt give it five stars is because he fell short on his style, i really don't like the "moaning" Koop i like when the devil is in him racin! But besides that this cd is Tight! Torture, Torture, chambers filled with corpses.

5 out of 5 stars CHEEKY.......2003-12-23

This cd is straight fire. If you a fan of the camp or just want to hear some thing diffrent out the south get this one. One of the best burn and ride cds out there! If you got some decent bang in the trunk you can ride threw the whole cd!

1 out of 5 stars Dumbass Reviewer!.......2003-11-15

The reviewer from Toledo is an idiot. Pay no attention to him. This nimrod actually thinks that this album "constitutes an actionable offense without the redeeming qualities found in Jack Sh*t's latest hit single". What a dumbass!

What this is, is Slicey Dice's finest CD yet! It seriously kicks ass! Check out track 27 ("Beat Dat B*tch Down") and listen how precise his riffs are, elegantly counterpointed against the sly scatting of Lil Prick's syncopated falsetto dirge, taking you deeper into modern urban alienation than any rapper since Killer G. (Rest in peace, Killer, and know that your death will be avenged.)

In short, if you don't buy this album now, you're a punk*ss little p*ssy who deserves to get slapped down hard.

4 out of 5 stars Oh man... Billy is BACK!.......2005-04-25

Who knew? Billy Idol practically disappears for 12 years after making Cyberpunk, and now he's back with this kickass rock'n'roll disc.

All of Billy's previous efforts followed the same pattern... a couple of knock-you-down great tunes, a couple of so-so tracks and a bunch of filler. Not this time. This one rocks from beginning to end, slowing down only for a couple of acoustic-but-still-rockin' ballads and one countryish song. Don't laugh - the song, "Plastic Jesus," brings to mind the Stones at their country best - somewhere between "Dead Flowers" and "Faraway Eyes."

All told, there are more great riffs, hooks and lyrics on this disc than you'll find on all of his previous solo efforts. If you're a fan of any kind of hard rock (well, except maybe you nü-metal dorks), then check this out. You won't be disappointed.

After several years in hiatus, Sham & the Professor have made the most ultimate album to date. This latest album will no doubt pass their last one, "Split Personalities", by light-years. A much clearer sound, and the most sensational beats to date. These boys from Coney Island have really outdone themselves. Most recommened(and funkiest) tracks are: "Freakshow, Under The Boardwalk, Raise The Roof, Roar, and Walking Dictionary."

This cd is a must for all "hip-hop junkies".

3 out of 5 stars Works Best When He Doesn't Try To Sound Like Today's Junk.......2006-11-16

Bad.

        "Sherri": Repetitive but cute.

The other 7 seem to be either mediocre or absolute crap.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome! Billy Idol is greater than ever!.......2005-05-11

I absolutely love this CD. If you love Billy Idol you will not be disappointed! If you haven't ever listened to him before you will become a fan in an instant! Great music! I was thrilled to find out that Billy Idol had a brand new CD. This CD is more like his older stuff. He's still a great songwriter and he still has wonderful vocals. I especially love Rat Race, Scream (although it made me blush the first time I actually listened to the words), and Summer Running. They are all good songs these are just the one's I currently keep playing over and over. Billy still has the sexiest voice! Check this cd out you won't regret it!!
