Album Description

"Elegant" and "funky" aren't words you'd expect to find in the same sentence, let alone used to describe the same album. But Mary Flower, one of America's finest blues and roots performers, pulls off that feat with Bywater Dance. A singer with a rich, sultry voice and an accomplished fingerstyle guitarist who also plays flawless lap slide, she reaches to the deepest roots of American roots music for her Yellow Dog Records debut.

Bywater Dance brought Mary to a steamy district just downriver from the French Quarter, where her masterful guitar was joined by some of the Big Easy's finest - Henry Butler, Jon Cleary and Dr. Michael White, among others. You'll hear rolling rhum-boogie piano, moaning Creole clarinet, ragtime washboard and primally funky sousaphone, as Mary is joined by each partner in turn for a marvelous musical dance.

The result sometimes sounds like Memphis Minnie fronting the Hot Five - neither strictly traditional acoustic blues nor straight New Orleans jazz, but a bewitching blend of both that is something new and different. Funky and folky, bluesy and beautiful, Bywater Dance is one irresistible musical journey.

4 out of 5 stars Typically marvellous release by master fingerstyle blueswoman.......2006-03-27

One of the truly wonderful fingerstyle guitarists and a lovely vocalist, Mary Flower went into a studio in the Bywater area of New Orleans last May shortly after JazzFest and with various local musicians wandered into the studio, joining her for her latest recording, ""Bywater Dance" (Yellow Dog Records). It is bitter irony that this disc came out shortly after Katrina devastated much of the Crescent City, but this is a terrific recording in which the guest musicians sound like they had played with Mary for some time, not simply in the studio. One thing refreshing about Mary is that she mines songs oft the beaten path, so no Robert Johnson covers thankfully. Instead we hear her render a marvelous "Blues My Naughtiy Sweetie Gives to Me," with some rolling piano from Amasa Miller and a hot clarinet solo from Tim Laughlin. Miller switches to accordion on "Crow Jane," which is derived from the William walker recording and her marvelous strutting guitar matches Walker's original. On "Raise the Devil," after an introduction with some sublime slide playing from Flower, Jon Cleary adds some wonderful backing piano. Cleary is also present on Flowers' rendition of George Washington Thomas' "New Orleans Hop Scotch," one of the first recordings to sport a boogie bass pattern. Kirk Joseph adds sousaphone for the bass here and a horn section including Tim Laughlin and Charlie Miller add atmosphere. Clearly takes a nice Longhair-flavored piano break, and Flower has a typically cleanly executed solo.
She is a marvellous blueswoman and only being conservative with my rating causes me to give it four and not five stars as I do recommend this unreservedly.

Album Description

The Sonatas and Partitas are technical wonders, seamlessly combining the intellectual and emotional, the craft and art, as one inseparable expression of the human spirit. While the study of antique styles is enlightening, an attempt to recreate an "authentic" performance would be contrary to the inventive nature of this music, whose content easily transcends those issues. Bach's music encompasses all the joy, sorrow, love, and grandeur of human experience, while commanding the performer to bring it to life through his own eyes and heart.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The true beauty of Bach.......2007-04-09

Mr. Fischbach brings out the powerful yet sensitive side of Bach. His technique flourish through the entire pieces, notes dance through the music. One of the "must haves" if you are a Bach fan.

5 out of 5 stars Deeply Satisfying Bach.......2005-02-02

Garrett Fischbach, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra violist, here delivers a most insightful traversal of the Bach solo sonatas and partitas. With breathtaking technique and a virtuosic exposition of both the architectural and emotional components of this music, Fischbach positively triumphs. Playing on a modern instrument, he gives a performance of which one can readily imagine Bach approving. And if Bach didn't approve, I wouldn't care, so great is my aesthetic pleasure in listening to these discs. Recorded in the Upper Ridgewood Community Church in Ridgewood, New Jersey, the album offers a beautiful acoustic.

5 out of 5 stars My New Favorite of an Old Masterpiece.......2004-12-01

After listening to Garrett Fischbach's newly released 2 CD recording of the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin several times, it has now become my favorite recording of these masterpieces by Bach.

For the last 25 years my favorite recording of the unaccompanied Bach has been the one by Henryk Szering, released in 1968 (I owned both the original LP set and the 1996 CD) which I didn't think could be improved upon.

Garrett Fischbach's fresh and very personal view of this music gives an exciting new perspective to these pieces that have been around for over 250 years. His easy and accurate technique allow the full 3 part polyphony to come through without any of the technical struggles apparent on most recordings, with the exception of Heifitz. His choice of using Eudoxa gut core strings (not mentioned in the liner notes) is rare in these days of synthetic strings and gives his sound a very smooth and appropriate Baroque character.

Purists might criticize some of his personal interpretive choices such as his use of ponticello in the fugue of the G Minor Sonata, his occasional use of non-standardized ornamentation, or a few of his tempi, but after a few listenings I can't imagine it being done any other way. It is worth quoting from his personal liner notes: "While the study of antique style is enlightening, an attempt to recreate an `authentic' performance would be contrary to the inventive nature of this music, whose content easily transcends those issues."

All in all I must say this is the most enjoyable recording of unaccompanied Bach I have ever heard from beginning to end, not just because I made the violin used. I believe even people who are not big Bach fans will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Tired of the "Same Old" Bach?.......2004-11-18

These great pieces are often studied, often played, and often recorded, but rarely with such clarity and inflection. Fischbach has obviously absorbed so much more than the "industry standard" approach to these works, and applied an intelligence and nuance that is not exceeded by any other recording available, and I've owned dozens of them. Here is a violinist who understands the violin, the music, and himself, and delivers as cohesive a musical statement as can be made. What has he accomplished here? Something that proves a musical mind at work that uses the violin to reveal music, music that is more often simply repeated than expressed. Here is the profound side of Bach, in a two disc set. Put it next to your Gould, another thinker NOT content to regurgitate Bach exactly as he was taught. Buy this CD, or buy my copies of other artists second hand. I have no need for them any more.

5 out of 5 stars clear and beautiful.......2004-10-22

This CD was an unexpected treat! Whether it is the rapidly boiling middle variations in the Ciaccona or the ethereal D major "chorale" which follows, the spring of the E major prelude or the intimate line of the a minor Andante, the expressive intent is always fulfilled in this performance. This fellow manages to play these magnificent works with personal commitment without interposing his own ego between the composer and the listener... a rare achievement!! Kudos to Mr. Fischbach and to anyone wise enough to branch out from the PBS-famous-soloist-of-the-day rut and hear this refreshing performer!

5 out of 5 stars Please enter a title for your review.......2006-03-13

The most powerful metal album of 2005, core or otherwise. On the surface they might sound like any other sloppy garagey metalcore band, but the riffs, even at their most basic, pack a lot more punch. The production is killer, it's totally gritty, but the guitars still sound totally heavy, delivering a unique muted powerchord crunch and a subtle doomy ringout. Their lead guitar flourishes aren't anything amazing, but they contribute some fractured melodies, and manage to avoid both the standard At The Gates melodic death technique, and the Botch influenced techy style, two things that seem to be foundations for way too many creativityless bandwagon-jumping bands lately. The deathstyle vocals are as authentically throaty as you could ask for, and the drummer is all over the place making the fullest use of his kit possible, working different parts in all over the place, but never at the expense of holding down a solid beat.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing Like Beating A Dead Horse . . . ........2006-03-26

I was very disappointed when I got this CD as it turns out to be another one of those "let's turn modern rock songs into swingy lounge tunes" albums. And it's not even good. After past albums where the band shines, this one jsut shows them jumping on the bandwagon. It's too bad that this particular bandwagon fell apart from too many bad "swing" bands. 8 to the bar is too good of a band to do something like this. Or so I thought. I think they need to take a step back and think of something new rather then trying to keep their swing status alive in the main stream. Especially by copying Richard Cheese and Paul Anka. And let's face it, Paul Anka's attempt wasn't that great either. It really is a shame that they had to stoop so low on this.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wild and Wonderful Macedonian Traditional Music.......2004-12-12

This is the type of Macedonian music I longed to own and *finally* discovered! Who would have guessed it was played by Toronto musicians? (Although several have Balkan roots). The first group, "Staro Selo" ("Old Village") start slowly and power up in rhythm, speed, and interpretation. Two of the most remarkable pieces include the bagpipes (gaida) and tambura (lute) as key instruments, along with the highly stylized female vocals. This music is unparallelled for its magnetic appeal. The kaval (end-blown flute) and tapan (type of drum) complete the village-like root sound. The music is from Central Macedonia, one is in the 11/8 rhythm, others are in the 7/8 and one is in 4/4. Two of the musical tracks originate from Pirin, Bulgaria. The liner notes explain that all are love songs with playful lyrics. Unfortunately, the lyrics are omitted. Brennna MacCrimmon and Jayne Brown provide beautiful spine-tingling authentic Balkan vocals. They sound like the Bisserov Sisters or the Trakia Ensemble, with absolutley natural inflections! Each track sounds better than the previous one! This CD has some of the best selections of Balkan and Macedonian rhythms and sounds produced in this unique region of the world.

The second group, "Neda Voda", is my favorite. They sing Roma (Gypsy) tunes which have Turkish roots. The musicians chose to play the Turkish saz, a tambura, and some zurnas or clarinets. This pulsating and addictive music is enhanced with the beat of several darbukas and a tar drum. The rhythms are primarily 7/8, one is in 9/8 and one is 4/4. The music is sensuous and undulating, with Middle Eastern tsiftetelli (belly dance) undertones ...

The third group called "Mastika" play "Lupchevo", "Trip to Bulgaria" and "Pumpkin Paidushko" with a semi-jazzy improvistion that is most appealing and contagious. They primarily play stringed instuments with outstanding percussion.

The fourth and last group is called "Altin Yildiz Orkestar" ("Gold Star Band"). They play a series of evocative songs that make me sing, dance and shout joyfully ... no exaggeration! Track #14 "Rumelaj" is hypnotically spell-binding. It was originally played by Kalyi Jag, a Hungarian Roma group. #15 is of Turkish roots but from Macedonia, has all the undulating rhythms of the region. I can hear the makams but am unable to identify which ones are being used. #16 originated in Kosovo, first played and sung by the Roma singer Ibrahim Semsi. #17 has unique twists and turns, created by a famous Greek Roma clarinet player. #18 has a great beat played on the tabla that hooks the listener from the start. It also includes passionate accordion music . The last track, #19 is totally mesmerizing, a Turkish recording, translated in the liner notes as a beseechment to the Creator ... to provide the singer "the way" or a direction in life. This CD contains some of the most outstanding Macedonian music I have ever heard. It will not disappoint anyone who loves the music of the Balkans. Other similar CDs recommended are: "Kurbeti" (Albanian Roma), "Balkanarama" (Seattle, WA based American band with authentic Roma sound), and "Songs frorm the City of Roses" (Albanian).
