Album Description

Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan is an ensemble of eight professional Canadian musicians with classical western musical training and extensive performance experience. They perform and record on an extended gamelan Degung indigenous to the Indonesian province of West Java (Sunda). Founded in 1983 and based in Toronto, Canada, this unique performing ensemble is dedicated to the development and expansion of its repertoire through the commissioning of new works by composers from Canada and around the world, as well as performing traditional Sundanese music. This recording presents a selection of such traditional pieces together with recent works by Sundanese composers, all in new arrangements by Evergreen Club members.

A soothing escape to a tropical paradise.......2005-03-12

The title says it all. It is an experience of music from another culture which in my mind is associated with a tropical paradise which I imagine existed prior to Dutch colonialism of now present day Indonesia. The gamelan orchestra consists of various sizes of suspended metallophones (percussion instruments with tuned metal bars), small bulbed gongs, large suspended gongs, and drums. With the soft gentle percussive nature of the music, the experience that I get from it is an expression of the slower tranquilizing rhythms of nature. This album is well worth the $9.98 for anyone looking to explore other realms of music.

I don't know much about this LA group Emanon but I do know these guys have talent. This record is their debuts EP to my knowledge for Ill Boogie Records, a small indie label with a record of releasing reasonably respectable material. Aloe Blacc (MC/Producer) has good flows, solid lyrics and a rather pleasant delivery. The other producer Exile creates a wonderful listening experience with his nice but non overly-adventurous beats. A problem that plagues Aloe Blacc is a problem that effects many underground emcees today. His raps sound good (he's no Canibus people) but they don't sound overly distinctive. Most of the production on this short cd would fit at home on any respectable semi-underground rappers album with their often jazzy feel. To me there is actually a really distinguished near classic song and the rest are really strong efforts as well. Now I'll give a break down on some songs...

Blind Love ~ This is by far the best track on the album. It gets a classic stamp from me. It has Aloe reflecting back on his younger days. How he would fantasize about girls and his friends would clown him because they would be shady and he would know it but he couldn't help it. The beat is supremely laid back, harking back to simpler more fun times in it's self. Utilizing a simple yet effective drum pattern and rich smooth guitar licks.

What Can I Do? ~ Aloe sounds really at home on this beat. It sounds like a somewhat Asian string arrangement for the basis and hard percussion to round it out. The verses are social conscious and centre around how we can be so unaware of all the ish around us, how the media plays dirty tricks, and how no one stands up for their ideals anymore. There is also a dope vocal sample for the chorus:

What You Live For ~ This is Emanon's battle attack on punk industry rappers that are all about the money. Again using a string arrangement for the core of the production amid evil thumpy bass and it really chops it up on the percussion end. It also uses a good call and response chant like hook keeping up on some variation.

Over all a respectable release for Emanon. They exhibit good production quality and choice in beats all around. They have a budding sense of creativity in their song choices and it's something a fan can look forward to. My advice for Aloe is to change up is flow more if he can to make things more interesting vocal and keep up the good production work to him and Exile. 3 Stars, maybe pick it up if you can get it at a decent price. Peace, love, and soul...

you have to listen to this album it's pure underground hip hop with aloe blacc & dj exile ... i've listened to thousands of hip hop cd's and i can assure you that will not be disapointed

Great songs.......2003-11-29

Very good CD, the song titled "What you live for" is by far there best song. Could listion to that song all day and not get bored of it. For only 12 bucks its a good buy.

No longer just an amateur.......2002-09-23

Tight lyrics, fresh beats, and intelligent content. This album demonstrates Emanon's ability to rap with the best of 'em. (BTW, just saw them last night in San Clemente. Up until the cops shut it down, it kicked ass.)

Constant Lambert's eight brief settings of the Li Po Poems are wonderful, and the performances here are good. But it's worth pointing out that these songs have also been scored for chamber ensemble.

Unacceptable.......2003-09-17

This disc is unacceptable unless you like tracks that are incomplete. It is one thing to have excerpts and another to end the track only 10 measures from the actual ending of the piece! Buy a disc with reasonably complete pieces instead. I am not even "filing" this with my other classical CDs. (It will be filed somewhere else.)

If Julian Bream's recordings were letters, his would all be hand written rather than typed.

Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
(although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)

If you can find this set buy it fast. There are not to many of these left out there. This has it all. Plus Julian Bream is the greatest guitarist of all time.

This a an wonderful collection of Julian Bream. He is the master of master . I always admire his talent as a genius of this centure.

Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!
