3 out of 5 stars WELL SAID.......2006-12-12

Hello there fello hip hop fan of the world. i came on here to write a review on this classic album. but CTRX has hit the nail on the head with his brilliant review on the album. (you'v saved me a job mate.) CTRX i most say, one of the best reviews iv read so far.

4 out of 5 stars Simple and hardcore...original boom bap.......2006-12-05

In 1993, the quartet of Fredro Starr, Sticky Fingaz, Suave, and Big DS took the hip hop world by storm with their debut "Bacdafucup." As the title indicates, this album is not for the weak at heart, and the music is unadulterated hardcore boom bap hip hop. This was really original and was really unlike anything else in '93. The MCs raps are consistently on topic: threats, guns, and beating you up. But their style and charisma make this so entertaining. They always rap in wild yells or crazed whispers, emphasizing the menacing style. The production is also what makes this album so enjoyable. Handled largely by the legendary Jam Master Jay and his protege Chyskillz, the beats use minimal instrumentals and sampling, maintaining a very rough and violent sound with simple drumbeats and bass. This album is so consistent, every song is banging and there's not really one any worse than the others. For that same reason, though, there's not really any that stand out, and some kind of run together. Overall "Bacdafucup" is an entertaining rap album that still sounds pretty fresh even today.

The first full track is "Bichasniguz," which is very representative of the album at whole: tough, threatening lyrics and great hardcore beats. "Throw Ya Gunz" is a highlight, with its call and response chorus and some of the best verses on the album, especially Sticky's, and the next track "Here N Now" basically picks up right where the previous track left off. "Atak of da Bal-Hedz" is my favorite song on the album, I think the lyrics are funny and paranoid sounding and the claustrophobic beat has cool horns and scratches in it. "Blac Vagina Finda" has a head-nodding bass heavy beat. "N... Bridges" and "Onyx Is Here" are both lyrically strong and well-produced. "Slam" is widely considered a classic hip hop track, and it's a strong point of the disc, but not really too unlike the other good songs. "Stick N Muve" has some good horn samples. The last three songs, "Shiftee," "Phat N All Dat," and "Da Next N..." all end the album strongly, more of the boom bap that this album provides so well.

"Bacdafucup" is unique and a very entertaining hip hop album, perfect for playing in the car or locker room. It's a product of a great concept and good execution with a great group of MCs and production team. I highly recommend this album to 90s rap fans, this album was ahead of its time and is great for any collection.

4 out of 5 stars Yeah.....but.......2006-05-11

Yeah the album is hot, but these kidz ain't relevant no more. They talked all that "go hard" knowledge but champ these chauncy ass studio thugs wasn't living it though. Fredro on TV playing heartthrob actor and your man Sticky turned actor/model/play gangsta for all of our east coast real troops to see. I still remember when sticky got on that MTV special boxing the white kid with the pink hair and got his nugget knocked right into the camera. How embarassing. I'm sorry people but it's hard to reminisce on some good music about a rough lifestyle when the dudes rapping it are now softer than cotton candy. I'm not endorsing the violence and all, but if yo speak it, people hold you to it. It's entertainment on a cd, but it's real life for someone else.

5 out of 5 stars Onyx - Bacdafucup.......2006-03-10

First of all, who would NOT rate this album a 5/5? If you gave it a 4 your wrong. This album deserves NOTHING less than 5 stars. The production is INSANE on here. The beats are crazy crazy. Real old school hiphop beats. Especially the "Slam" beat, that made an appearance on the movie "How High". Onyx was the first real killa rap group. I know a bunch of emcees/groups copied there style. Their voices are very ill, energetic and crazy. I love this album. There isnt ONE song on here that is worth skipping. They are all worth the listen, except the skits of course, I skip them. I have a bunch of favorites on here. Please buy this album and support real hiphop. Youll love it trust me!!

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece, And For The Most Part "Onyx's Best Album".......2006-01-24

In 1993, the commercial side of rap music got a little more grimey, and the underground side of rap music got pushed to a level of hardcore never seen before. True, this description also fits the surprising success of "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" like a glove, but for all their bravado the Clan never shaved their heads bald while brandishing pistols and stomping a big Timb' style boot in your face. For Onyx, that's just the COVER of their seminal debut album "Bacdafucup."

With a recently minted distribution deal for his independent (or some might say vanity) label JMJ Records, Run-D.M.C.'s own Jam Master Jay was looking for a group to be the next BIG thing, and in Onyx he struck gold in a big way. The conception of Onyx at first seems predictably industry for what even today still gets labelled "gangsta rap music": describe violence, talk a lot of s***, and try hard as hell to scare the parents of rebellious children from the hoods to the burbs. Two things made Onyx different though: the infectious chemistry of putting Big DS, Suave, Fredro and Sticky Fingaz together; and the HEAVY BOOM of the bass bottoms provided by Jay himself along with his co-horts Chyskillz and Kool Tee.

Some people might have been skeptical at first. Many may have even slept on their infectious (and extremely macho) first single "Throw Ya Gunz," but these angry rappers who called themselves Da Mad Face Invasion simply couldn't be ignored any more when "Slam" hit the charts. Long before Ludacris had people throwing 'bows, Onyx was encouraging full-fledged riots with this raucous cross between hip-hop and a mosh pit. It's a measure of this song's popularity that even MTV icons Beavis and Butthead paid tribute to it by rapping the chorus in the introduction to "Bounce" off "The Beavis and Butthead Experience." More memorable than the chorus itself though was the third verse by Sticky Fingaz; one which made such an indelible impression it had fans anticipating his solo album for nearly a decade afterward:

Misogynists should probably be glad Sticky Fingaz cares so much about the female orgasm, but they'll probably still be disgusted by the fact Onyx treat all women like sex objects; proven by lines like "Praise the Lord, cause even nuns get stuck!" The timid or easily offended probably shouldn't have picked up an album with a parental advisory on it in the first place though, and Onyx repeatedly earn it with stories that would be rated R in theatres: guns, sex, drugs and violence are praised throughout - all of those traditional hallmarks of American entertainment. The dirty little secret that's really not so secret is that people enjoy living vicariously through the fictional accounts of notorious criminals, and Onyx embraces that truth to the hilt. So much so, in fact, that a few tracks with weaker beats fail just because the movie/novel/album drags on a little too long, like a gangsta movie that's one reel too long. Towards the end you'll want to skip songs like "Stik 'N' Muve" and "Shiftee" although the conclusion is redeemed by the braggadociously silly "Phat ('N' All Dat)" and the comedic fellatio of "Da Nex Ni***" as illustrated by this lament of frustration from rapper Suave:

For the most part, the plusses on this album are many for fans of hardcore rap, with Sticky Fingaz providing the needed comic relief if and when things get too serious. Other than the six unnecessary skits and a couple of throwaway songs that don't hold up to the high standard the group themselves set, "Bacdafucup" is a solid debut album for Onyx from beginning to finish. The curse that would plague this group for the rest of the 90's was that after such a classic debut, it got increasingly hard for them to catch lightning again. Forget that for the moment though, and if you're a fan of the good ol' ultra-violence, cop this album if you haven't ALREADY done so.

To many listeners, the fact that mid-'90s cartoon rappers Onyx are back at all begs a simple question: Why? With lines like "Onyx is shoot-outs with your moms inside," you'd be hard-pressed to admit it's for the rhymes, unless you were a really huge fan the first time around. And although the beats (courtesy of Self, DaVinci, D.R. Period, and others) are serviceable in a bombastic, "grimy-crimey" kind of way, they also wouldn't sound out of place on any of ESPN's Jock Jams compilation albums. The standout clunkers are pretty painful to hear, especially "Slam Harder," with its unfortunate Welcome Back Kotter riff, and the vaguely smoothed out "Gangsta," which is yet another entry into the "me and my b!#@h" sweepstakes. The Havoc-produced "Hold Up" and Self's "Hood Beef" help the Queens rappers redeem themselves slightly, but overall the trio come off as M.O.P. without the requisite street credibility or the music for preteens to torture their parents. --Rebecca Levine

3 out of 5 stars Negitive Reviews? Why.......2006-02-20

Lets just get one thing staight. This isnt the best effort by Onyx, yet you really can't compare anything to Bacthafukup, because that was a masterpiece, and its really hard to duplicate an album that is that good, YET, this is still a solid record, and even though not perfect, its still worth 3 1/2 stars in my book. I think that some fans also dont like some of the songs, because some of them have an old-school beat to them, and most people under the age of 18 seem to like modern rap, which most of it is a joke. The old-school guys that still are around to make us albums are a treat to have, considering that the music bizz is throwing out more hip-hop then we can shake a stick at. Onyx is one of the old school bands that gave us some pretty hard s#*t back in the day, and this album, not as hard as older Onyx, is still better then most newer stuff. I'll take this over 50 or Ja Rule anyday of the week. Once again, I think that fans that like old school hip-hop might like this one for sheer fact that it does have some old-school vibe to it, and plus, its ONYX!

3 out of 5 stars Just barely..........2006-01-20

I just barely give this 3 stars. I'll admit "Slam Harder" rocked my head about 3 summers ago, and I was DYING to get this album. I bought it and was pissed off. The first 4 or 5 tracks were good, then it goes down hill from there. The best song on there is the "Hold Up" song with the production from Havoc of Mobb Deep. No where near Onyx's expectations, and not even close to the previous 3 albums that they've made. I haven't given up on them yet, because I'm going to buy Backdafucup, All We Got Iz Us, and Shut Em Down, to hear how they really sound. This album is just unacceptable for any fan.

2 out of 5 stars Wack.......2005-09-21

Any body who gives this more than 2 stars either is die hard fans or they just started listening to rap in 2002. This is'nt even a shadow of what Onyx used to be. If slam harder is the sequel to slam, then I guess what they say is true about sequels then. This album is very bad, avoid and cop they early albums.

5 out of 5 stars ONYX.......2004-11-04

people hate on this album so much, it's not nearly as good as bacdafucup, a.w.g.i.u or shut em down but it's not bad. I'd really give it about 6.5/10 just cuz it's short and is not really as grimey as it should be, but im gonan give it 5 for the sake of onyx- best rap trio ever

I don't know what possessed me to buy this album. I must have been drunk at the time, because there is no other logical explanation. This is easily the whackest album I have ever copped. Don't be fooled by the beat on the single "Slam Harder." While that beat is ok, the rest of the production was obviously done by other people. And that production is about 99 levels below monkey sh**. Basically the most generic beats imaginable. If you listen to the lyrics, it doesn't get much better. Its painfully obvious Onyx was trying hard to pander to corporate mainstream rap. But that should even be apparent by just looking at the track listing with such titles as "Big Trucks" and "Wet the Club." Yup, this album is pretty much a creativity waste-land. But what can you expect from an album and a single with the same names as thier only commercially successful music from a decade ago. Of course, they could have always been this bad, but I don't think I'll be checking out any of thier other LPs to jog my memory in this lifetime. If you see this CD in a store, I suggest you do as the title says and bacdafucup and buy something else.
