5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get much better than this..........2007-07-19

Okay, I thought they couldn't top last years album, 'The Stand'....AMAZING. Then along comes this. Okay, took a little while to grow on me, but all I can say is listen to 'Devotion' WITH the lyrics....it WILL make you cry!

Brooke Fraser also did an amazing job yet again with 'Lead me to the Cross' and 'Hosanna' (latter is also on the new live Hillsong album 'Saviour King', also on THIS album).

I reckon Joel and the team will go a long way with this ongoing project- oh, and the DVD 'The I Heart Revolution' is inspiring- all the more so as I'm working in a poor area of rural China!

5 out of 5 stars captures the heart of a movement.......2007-06-01

This is music that has challenged and inspired me lyrically. I'm feeling every song on this album, particularly the fresh sound of Found followed by Hosanna and Solution.

This album makes me want to go out and change the world. Small things with great love. Seeking to have the compassion of Christ. Allowing my heart to break over what breaks God's heart... to share the gospel with my life and my actions.. not just with what I say. To be the hands and feet of Christ in this world... to impact people in a positive way... and all glory going to God.

God is up to something in the lives of young people. He wants to use us in powerful ways... putting into action the revolutionary idea of TRULY loving Him... and loving people. This album has really crystallized a lot of what I've been reading and hearing lately (Irresistible Revolution, etc..)

It's definitely a slightly different flavor than their previous albums... but if you're into social justice and living a life of impact in Christ's name.... check out this album. It will inspire.

I'm a relatively new fan of Hillsong UNITED but they've really secured my support with this album. I'm enjoying pretty much every song here... and I'm looking forward to seeing what's in store with "the I Heart Revolution"

These guys get a lot of slack because of their popularity. And also people want to hear their old albums repackaged it seems... but God is always fresh, and it seems to me that they're in tune with what God is doing in the hearts of young people. I will continue to pray that their passion will light many a fire around the world.

Peace, love and grace..

5 out of 5 stars Studio album does not disappoint.......2007-05-25

Hillsong United is known for their powerful live worship albums. You feel as if you are worshipping and praising alongside United when you listen to their live albums from the past. So I wasn't sure that a studio album would have the same intense effect that their past albums have had ( United We Stand is the best in my opinion)....well let me say that this album does not disappoint. The more and more I listen to it, the more I absolutely love it!! Let's see, personal favorites are Lead Me To The Cross (beautiful ballad from Brooke Fraser), Found (like this version better than the Mighty To Save version), Solution (not only do you just crank it up and jam out to this song but I love these lyrics of "... Higher than all circumstance Your promise stands, Your love for all to see, higher than our protest lines and dollars signs Your love is all we need..only You can mend the broken heart and cause the blind to see, erase complete the sinner's past and set the captives free...only You can take the widow's cry and cause her heart to sing, be the father to the fatherless...." (( these particular lyrics really impacted me), Never Let Me Go (you feel God's love for you), You (simple but DEEP!!) and Saviour King (this will be a favorite in churchs all around the world...powerful and deep lyrics!).

I find myself going to bed with a song in my head and wake up humming one of the songs. They stay with me all day and help me to get through the day. I have read other reviews and comments and the ones that criticize should really try to have a more open mind. The message, love and desire is in this album just as much as the others in the past. I have always said before you criticize, try to educate yourself more on the albums and songs...if you want a deeper understanding on the songs, go to YouTube Hillsong United TV and check out all the blogs on the songs. Once you see it, you will have a better and deeper understanding of the songs and connect even more. I am so grateful that there are talented people who use their gifts that God has given them and use it to serve Him according to His purpose. Without powerful worship songs, I don't know how I would honestly make it through the daily struggles that I face. They honestly get me through and help me to connect to our Creator and find purpose, meaning and understanding.

Thank you so very much Hillsong United for continuing to create awesome praise and worship music that glorifies and exhalts our Creator and Saviour!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Album is AMAZING!!!.......2007-05-25

I bought the import one straight from Hillsong Australia, but its the same cd. The tracks are amazing. Solution is the best praise song and Saviour King is one of the best worship songs that hillsong has ever done (ive heard their cds for 10 years). Point of Difference reminds me of The Time Has Come from the United We Stand cd but its different of course. Break Free is more punk, Desperate People is a good worship song, Lead Me to the Cross reminds me of the None But Jesus song a little bit. Found is the same song from Mighty to Save. My Future Decided is more of a youth punk song Never Let Me Go is a good worship song You is slower could be good for meditation Saviour King is amazing though - revolutionary powerful WOW!!!!!!!!!! I first thought of it like came to the rescue but its not - its completely new. If youre mixed about my review, buy it for Saviour King - its the new anthem Hillsong church is singing in Australia SIMPLY THE BEST!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars All of the Above is not above all the others.......2007-05-24

Hillsong United has been providing relevant Christian music to youth for a few years now. All of the Above is a step backwards. While the songs display great musicianship, they are not as singable as past albums. Song lyrics has walked away what Christ has done for us (except for "Lead Me to the Cross" which has great words). If you'd like to listen to some good mainstream-sounding Christian music, check out this album. If you're looking for a worship album, look to past Hillsong United projects.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07

I believe this was the first recording of Elijah in English that used an "international" conductor and some international singers. Fruhbeck gives a good, dramatic sweep to the piece, with some wonderful dramatic moments. This is an old fashioned performance, with only a solo quartet, and if there is a semi-chorus, I can't tell the difference. This means that the soprano is the Widow, and an Angel, the mezzo the Angel and Queen Jezabel, etc. You really should have a libretto, but you don't get one at this price.
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15

Okay, I'm gonna admit I'm biased- I first sung in the chorus of Elijah when I was 14 and it made a BIG impression on me!
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.

That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.

All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.

4 out of 5 stars Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

This is a good recording of an oratorio that deserves more attention. The chorus and soloists are very good--I just wish Fischer-Diskau wouldn't slide around so much in singing the title part!

4 out of 5 stars Very pleased.......2007-06-10

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this CD. True, I could have listened on line before buying but that would have taken the fun out of the purchase. Besides, I really didn't care for the CD the first couple of times I listened but now I really love it. It's not something to listen to all the time but given the right circumstances e.g. a small gathering of friends, it's perfect. If I'd listened to online, I wouldn't have purchased it.

5 out of 5 stars Sumptuous and mellow.......2002-11-28

The six men of the King's Singers present sweet and light-hearted madrigals of such English composers as Morley, Weelkes, Dowland, Wilbye and Byrd. The thirty five selections include "Now is the Month of Maying", "Though Philomela Lost Her Love", "Sing We and Chant It," the celebration of tobacco entitled "Come, Sirrah Jack, Ho!" and a host of other fa-la-la-la-la venues interspersed with wistful laments. I love the rich, sonorous sound of a male vocal ensemble, with countertenors, tenor, baritones and bass, and these six singers do a great job. Occasional instrumental accompaniments by lute and tabor are included, but this group doesn't really need it--I could listen to them for hours all by themselves. Also quite enjoyable, as well as educational, is their earlier release, "The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour: Italy, England, France, Spain and Germany". For a more risque' take on the vocal music of Renaissance England, you might get a kick out of "The Art of the Bawdy Song" by the Baltimore Consort with the Merry Companions.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Collections of English Madrigals.......2002-03-27

Any fan of the King's Singers will regret not having this album in their collection.

This album offers a veritable feast of the choicest English madrigals found on any comparable album. From the obligatory "Now is the Month of Maying" and "Fair Phyllis" to the more obscure "Tan ta ra, cries Mars," there is certainly enough on this album to bring a smile to lovers of Renaissance music - and a spark of recognition to anyone who sang traditional madrigals in high school or university. For serious students of early music, this album comes very highly recommended.

Among the more sonorous offerings on this album, Jones' "Farewell, Dear Love" and Dowland's "Come Again," cannot be ignored. Nor can Bennet's immortal "Weep O mine eyes" be matched more musically than here by the King's Singers.

This album has been played again and again for almost 6 years as both serious listening and background working music. And it has yet to lose its delight.

4 out of 5 stars A Delightful Collection of English Madrigal.......2000-08-16

With 35 tracts to enjoy you're sure to find a couple of favorites. I gave this CD 4 of 5 stars compared to 5 stars for the King's Singers World Madrigal Tour CD. If you prefer all your songs in English, this will be your 5 star CD. Tract 32 "Come again" is my favorite due to the surperb tenor lead and melodic development. Compared to many polyphonic early music styles (1300s-1485), this era (1500-1610) provides many memorable melodies.

4 out of 5 stars A wide variety.......2000-04-28

This is an excellent sampling of English madrigals. This presentation, given by an older roster of the Singers, is a nice introduction to the world of the madrigal, and English madrigals in particular.

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

The understated East Coast hip-hop messenger J-Live delivers the goods on his latest indie release, which may lack big-budget studio acumen but still contains some gems that will rock the house, and make you think. He may not have the big-time star power of Nelly or Jigga, but records like this show why J-Live gets serious love in the underground scene. With a sexy but serious vibe that places it in the same camp as records by fellow alt rappers Mos Def and Common, All of the Above straddles the fence between somewhat preachy odes on the state of hip-hop, à la the emphatic "Do That $#!%," and playful love poems, such as the bouncy "Like This Anna," which brings to mind the classic days of A Tribe Called Quest. Sometimes J meanders, and he's not helped by an often subdued production, but on cuts like the moody "Traveling Music" his passion and power shine bright. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars The Answer Is: All Of The Above (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5.0 stars).......2007-04-04

Whoa, I've never heard an album that vibed so well. This album flows so smoothly that it is amazing. What really makes me mad is that I slept on this album for quite some time. This album dropped back in 2002 (I was about 16 at the time), and at that time I was living with my dad in San Antonio, and kept up with all the new music on The Music Choice Channel. So when I went to Atlanta to visit my mom for the summer, she didn't have cable at all, making it hard for me to keep track of anything that dropped. Basically if an album came out in Spring/Summer of '02, and didn't get played on the radio in ATL, chances are that it fell through my hands. But luckly I was able to find this lost gem not too long ago, and I have to say that this album is almost, if not perfect in my opinion.

What I like about J-Live's album "All Of The Above" is the fact that he makes some of the most complex hip hop music and is straight foward about it. Most of the time he pass off positive messages in his rhymes. In "How Real It Is" he basically explains how real it is and being positive about the whole thing with such rhymes as, "The illest weapon you can load ain't your nine, boy, load your brain". Another track that has a perfect vibe is "Are You Satisfied", with great production and real nice lyrics.

I like the tracks "MCee" and "Do That $#!%" how he breaks down what an emcee should sound like, and don't have to rhyme about cars and money in order to prove that they are rappers. On the latter song, he really makes a good poing that some people rhyme about pushing expensive cars when they are even old enough to drive. And the song "One For The Griot" is a funny storytelling song with one heck of a twisted ending. Thats possibly one of the best storytelling songs I've heard since Slick Rick, if you ask me.

Then we have more where the production blends in and vibes perfectly. "Like This Anna" is a head nodder song for beautiful women. "The 4th 3rd" is another song with an excellent laid back feel that I found to be perfect. "Travelling Music" and "Charmed Life" have great transition from one song to the next. The final track "The Lyricist" really shows appreciation for the art of being a fabolous lyricist.

This album is awesome in my opinion. I'm glad that I heard this album, because it's not too often that I hear something like this. And it's not too often that I give a perfect rating to something. Meaning that it had to blow me away to receive a perfect score, and this album does. "All Of The Above" is possibly one of the best albums that I heard on this side of the 21st century. Chances are if you don't fell this album, you're not into hip hop, plain and simple. Otherwise if you're a fan of true hip hop with positivity, I am almost certain you will enjoy this album. Being a lyricist as myself, I want to make an album something similar to this here. Word is bond.

5 out of 5 stars All of the Above, passes as one of my favorites.......2006-07-06

Well the first time I heard of J-Live, I've got to admit was from Tony Hawk Underground, which is really great if you want to know some good under. artist, but his song really appealed to me, because I love those jazzy beats. So I listened to samples and it turned out i bought All of the Above, which took me forever to find in stores. If you are fans of A Tribe Called Quest, Common, The Roots, and even Little Brother, You will need this in your collection, trust me. In my opinion this one is the greater of the others he's made. My fav tracks would have to be: Like this Anna, Nights like This, The 4th and 3rd, Travelling Music, A Charmed Life, 3 out of 7, and the best (my fav) for last The Lyricist. Great Great song, the way he rhymes "I stretch my hands out to reach for the stars, I'm makin' plans now to live on Mars, Cause I got Earth on lock"
So Yeah Jazzy Beats, great Lyrics, Good CD.

NOW IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT THIS ALBUM, READ THIS REVIEW. DONT IGNORE IT BECAUSE IT'S LONG!
With that said...Slept on by many, All of the above is the epitmoe of hiphop; Amazing lyrics, flow, stories, beats, samples, scratches & concepts all into one. J-Live; one of the most slept on and underrated MC's in the entire history of hiphop, with this release, has proven just why he is considered to be of the most intelligent and creative Mc's ever to emerge from the underground. Now, the reason why so many slept on this is probably because it does not initially have the same impact that the "best part" did (and still does due to it having finally being released properly)as the best part showcased tight lyrics but even better beats w/guys such as DJ Premier, Pete Rock & other respectable producers. Whereas, All of the above is more of a lyrics & concept album...in this respect it is literally flawless. Proof of this is the exceptional joint "MCee" where J-Live threads the letters "M" and "C" into the starts of words, sentences and so many other places so brillianly it's no wonder he was an English Teacher. Now, I know peeps will be saying "yeh, well that aint original...some guys do the entire alphabet" So what...its the way in which J-Live lets his flow rip up the track and makes it rhyme at the same time.
"You know why, cause I'ma Master of Ceremonies,
Making a Comeback,
n Moving the Crowd w/ Mad Charisma,
Most of y'all cornballs, Mingle at Concerts,
Making a Claim but you know who is the ['MC']
More Concentration on My Cadence Might Cloud your mind
Controlling your Movement Capaciously,
My Capacity to Massacre Crumbs And Motive Change
Most Certainly Makes you Consider Me,
Champion, Microphone is Consistently,
Modelling Candor of Magnificence,
Cunning and Marvelous,
Crafty yet Malevolent,
To all Cultivators of Mindless Crap!

Yeh, now thats what you call Hiphop, and thats whats missing in this game...originality. Now, to dwell on only one song would mean surely that the whole album pales in comparison...NO! Pretty much all tracks on this album have their own concepts and sound that make the album a much more of a varied listen. For example tracks like "How Real It Is" talk about the realness of life in actuality and what responsibilites come with handling your ish like a man. Then "Satisfied" (Considered by some to be the best J Live track of all time) talks about the tragedy of 9/11 and priorities and values that we all share. The beat is just crazy on this one..making you want to throw your fist up and stand for something. Then on a more lingustically clever approach, Live tells a Vivid story with a variety of twists on "one for the griot", whilst "Like This Anna" uses the idea of a woman named "Anna" to play with the idea of the phrase "it's like this and a, its like that and a" used commonly in hiphop today. However, for me, the best of these is "A Charmed Life" where live talks about his life stages over a ridiculously chilled out and charming jazz vibe.
Now I would say the ONLY Flaw about this album is the way that the "stir of echoes" track and the "interlude" were put together as they are both easily the most un-satisfying of the tracks and definitely slow the energy of the album down. But that's the only flaw for me with this album. Now, With all that said any REAL hiphop head (and I mean it, I aint using this played out term for nothing) MUST OWN THIS, along with the best part! You will have stumbled across a gem that you never really payed much attention to.

One of the best Lyrical masterpieces ever created, All of the above is something that you cannot afford to just ignore! J-Live if you reading this then KEEP DOIN YOUR THING, it really is appreciated over here in the UK...keep on keeping it LIVE!
And with that said...all I can say is 10/10 Lyrics 9/10 Beats (and thats being critical) a slept on refreshing classic.

5 out of 5 stars A Cross-Genre Classic.......2006-01-04

Often hidden behind the shadow of J-Live's classic debut album "The Best Part", his second album (but first released to the mainstream)is a classic in its own right. J-Live proves that he is one of the most intelligent MCs on the microphone today, and he will continue to be the consummate hip-hop artist, as he writes, raps, DJs and produces. "All of the Above" has everything a classic album should, great music supporting thought-provoking lyrics. There are 21 tracks (including 3 skits and one DJ cut, but don't be tricked, they sport smooth grooves as well). Though all of the tracks are bumpin', the standout cuts have to be the 3 consecutive BOMBS "MCee" (in which J starts every other line with M and C. It doesn't come off as stupid, just listen), "Like This Anna" (Hip-Hop love song done right), "One for the Griot" (A switch 'em up story much like "Tonight's Da Night" by Redman) as well as the bonus cut "3 out of 7". Just put this LP on and let J-Live take you on a ride. Let him paint a picture with his words, and show you that hip-hop truly is an art form. With 0 skippable moments spread across 21 tracks, "All of the Above" proves that it is a classic in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars EMCEE.......2005-09-24

This is a dope album from an extremly underapreciated MC J live proves himself to be a lyrical monster while Wes Jackson offers up a full platter of varied and sweet sounds for your lisenting pleasure. I have had this for 3 years and I still spin it like the day I bought it the production is timeless. If your looking for a breath of fresh air in Hiphop and are tired of what rap music in genral has become this may just be your album.

5 out of 5 stars the best part of hip hop is..........2007-07-09

J-Live, one of the most talented emcees the underground has seen. The man started out as a middle school English teacher; it was only when this album finally hit shelves in 2001 after drawn out troubles with two different record labels that he was able to focus on rhyming full time. From then on, J-Live has come with consistently tight records, and he's known as one of the best in the highly competitive world of conscious rap. One listen to this, his first studio album, blasts away all question.

"The Best Part" showcases J-Live's talents over beats from the hottest producers out there: Primo, Pete Rock, and Prince Paul all contribute. His academic background means you're in store for the best in clever wordplay, and as always J comes packed with rhymes that uniquely delve into intelligent subject matter, like "Vampire Hunter J," an attack on the heartless and greedy side of government, and this CD's banger "R.A.G.E.," a declaration of J's anger about the state of the black community.

J also rocks a tight story rap about the life of twin thugs on "Wax Paper," and spits a sick couple verses about the hip hop industry over a speed-changing beat on the impressive "Them That's Not." The real gem of this cd, though, is the slower, introspective "Timeless," where J contemplates life over a laid back beat and we all get a little bit closer to enlightenment. Overall, this album is nothing but straight classic; A+ material.

The Best Part is that you can cop this pretty easy off eBay or froogle for $15. Do it.

5 out of 5 stars Indeed the Best Part.......2007-06-03

If you can get a hand on a copy of this album, snatch it up. I like J-Live's other albums as well... but this one is a cut above the others.

This disc could be more succinctly titled Christmas for Anglophiles. Few sounds are more British than the boy soprano-dominated Choir of King's College in Cambridge. And the group is heard--in some sections recorded live--in an actual Christmastide service amid the generous reverberation of a cathedral acoustic with little more than a tasteful though austere organ accompaniment. The repertoire isn't just conservative, traditional hymns and carols. One is harmonized by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and there are a number of contributions by contemporary composers Thomas Adès, Judith Weir, and John Tavener, all of which are probing, sincere, even personal examples of their art (and some are daringly liberated, harmonically speaking). The downside for some listeners--at least on repeated hearings--is that the entire service is heard, sermons and all. Others may take this in the spirit of a Paul McCreesh liturgical reconstruction, with congregational singing included. --David Patrick Stearns

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful tradition .......2007-01-18

A great experience combining Christmas carols with the reading of Holy Scripture (the lessons). It's a beautiful Christmas worship service in the Anglican tradition. I highly recommend it.

In our age when thing change so fast, it's good to know that some great traditions continue. This recording is one of them.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-12-06

Listening to this one and one-half hour recording is one way to experience the meaning of Christmas. It must be a joy for those who can attend such a service as the "Festival of nine-lessons and carols". To hear the beautiful voices of the King's College Choir and their marvelous organist, Benjamin Bayl. This is all under the direction of Stephen Cleobury, and provides a treat for music lovers everywhere. The carols are related directly to the scripture readings that tell the Christmas Story in its entirety, all read skillfully by various people involved in the program. They are not lengthy, but quite to the point. The related carols are varied as to composer and mood, running the gamut from the traditional to the more recent such as : 'The Truth from above'(Vaughan Williams)-'Illuminare,Jerusalem' (Judith Weir)- and 'The Lamb' (John Tavener). The soloists include:Edward Moore (treble)-Thomas Bullard (baritone)-Adrian Kelly (tenor)-Edward Harries (treble)-and Julian Perkins (baritone). All sang well as did the entire choir. The English sound, that is boy sopranos and male altos, appeal to me personally and show up very well in this particular group. It's all quite emotional and very moving, especially to those who celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday. I've had this disc for several years, and would not think of celebrating Christmas without listening to it several times during the season.

    5 out of 5 stars Truely inspirational!!!!.......2001-12-23

A holiday classic. It has been a tradtion in our family for years. This is the first time I've seen it available on CD. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Don't let this recording pass you by!.......2001-07-10

Do yourself a favor and buy this CD - even if you don't think you like Christmas music. People stand in line for hours to hear the Choir of King's College's annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, and when you hear this recording, you will understand why. Rarely does a choir sound quite as pure, smooth, and "together" as they do on this recording. The selection of music is wonderful. You get a few traditional favorites like "O Come All Ye Faithful", recorded live with the choir and the congregation singing along (I thought this would annoy me but it really doesn't - it only makes me feel the spirit of the ceremony even more). You also get plenty of wonderful choir-only pieces that you've probably never heard before unless you're a big cathedral music enthusiast. It all begins, of course, with a single choirboy singing the first verse of "Once in Royal David's City". It's impossible for me to pick an absolute favorite from this recording. I find "The Fayrfax Carol" by Thomas Ades to be particularly haunting and beautiful. Vaughan Williams' "The Truth from Above" is also very, very lovely. And how could you not enjoy "Up! Good Christen folk, and listen"? There is also Ord's short, but beautiful, "Adam lay ybounden". I like all of these pieces in and of themselves, but I think having them sung so expertly and sweetly by the choir makes me like them even more.

To top it all off, you get about 20 minutes worth of readings and prayers recorded live at the service, interspersed among all of the music. I suppose this could be seen as the recording's only drawback (people talking), but I think it makes the recording much more authentic as a representation of the world-famous service. The readings make the recording more than just a musical experience, but a complete Christmas experience - which is what the ceremony is supposed to be. Besides, if you really hate the talking, that's what the skip button is for.

Go ahead and buy this -- you'll be very glad you did.

    5 out of 5 stars A Shining Star.......2000-11-21

To the other fine and informative reviews here, I would add the following. Though the Festival service and the recording are 80% musical, the "lessons", which are brief scripture passages given moving dramatic readings by college personnel, are the backbone of the Festival and the riverbed through which the carols flow. There is a chronological order to the lessons, beginning in Genesis, and each musical selection is tied to the reading which preceded it. This synthesis makes listening to this CD a very spiritual experience that transports one well beyond what is felt listening to other recorded compilations of carols.

The music is primarily drawn from traditional British Christmas repertoire. Well-known British composers over centuries and King's College's organists and music directors over the past century wrote or arranged most of the selections. Several texts are in Olde English or Latin. Three recent compositions are here, too, but the first priority of the Festival director is clearly the tradition and the history of this service and of Christmas in England. There is nothing, however, "musty" about this CD. The tempi are modern and sprightly where indicated, and the performances are transcendent. The Choir of King's College, directed by Stephen Cleobury, consists of 35 young men chosen by highly competitive audition, and they are among the finest choral ensembles in the world. A superb pipe organ played by Benjamin Bayl is the only supplement to the voices.

The sound of the recording is a major improvement from radio broadcasts and earlier (now out-of-print) releases of this service. For this CD, the four-and-a-half hymns in which the congregation sings with the choir were recorded during services in December 1998. The balance of the recording was made in the same chapel in July 1999, without the congregation present, so the coughing and shuffling heard during live broadcasts and earlier live recordings is happily absent. The only small problem is that the reverberating acoustics of the chapel, though gorgeous, make many lyrics difficult to discern. Keep the booklet handy. Highest recommendation.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection.......2007-03-05

I have many collections of Purcell's Music. This collection stands up to them at half the price. Solid buy.

    5 out of 5 stars PERFECT!.......2006-10-26

There is only a word with which I can describe this set of discs: perfect!
The only flaw there is, is not related to the singing or playing: no text enclosed.

5 out of 5 stars Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

5 out of 5 stars More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

    5 out of 5 stars What A Blessing.......2007-07-16

I lived in Florence, AL, which is Lenny's home area, and have heard him sing live many times. His story of turning from a rough life to a Called Christian is inspirational and his music conveys his love for God as if written directly from the heart. Everyone should have this and "Scrapbook" in their collection.

I love country music and to listen to Lenny who is a man after God's heart sang in country gospel, what more can I say..got to have it.

5 out of 5 stars Lenny LeBlanc is my favorite contemporary praise singer........2001-09-19

Lenny LeBlanc just recorded a new praise CD and video at my church, The Church of The Apostles, in Atlanta, Georgia, and it was an awesome worship and praise occasion. He had a month or two prior joined with Don Moen at our morning worship service, and the Atlanta area was really prepared to join him for this event. That CD will be released before the end of the year.

This CD, "Above All", features the great title cut, a favorite sung at my church all the time, "There is none like you", and so many other great songs. My new favorite is the last cut, "I Believe".

You will love this CD just as I do. It will make driving and just plain listening around the house a time of worship and praise.
