Album Description

My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden has decided to set loose her bobby pins and let her hair fly on the ambient dance floor. Her latest semi-collaboration with 13 different remixers, entitled "Tear It Down", reworks songs from the highly acclaimed album, "Bring Me The Workhorse" featuring tracks by Alias, Lusine, Murcof, Stakka and Gold Chains. Oh, it's international too! With diplomatic representatives from Belgium, France, Mexico, The UK and America (East and West Coasts baby!), the remixes range from drum-n-bass, to glitchy ambient, minimalism, and get-your-booty-on-the-dance-floor club music. "Tear It Down" stands on it's own horsie legs. In comparison to Shara's control in the songs of "Bring Me The Workhorse", these electronic horsetrainers loosen up the forms and smooth over some of the rougher emotional outbursts. Many of the remixers adhere to the original song forms, snazzing them up or stripping them down, and there are also examples of djs excerpting the tracks to create something entirely new and not song form related, focusing on one element and elaborating, rather than being bound to the storytelling. Shara says, "The variety of their approaches made this project exhiliratingly unpredictable!" "Worden is a remarkable chanteuse...Combining brainy indie-pop with touches of art-rock and classical music, Worden's work radiates brilliance to match her considerable ambition." - NPR

2 out of 5 stars Not what you think.......2007-03-12

If you liked Bring Me the Workhorse, you may have been like me and got really exited about this remix album. The album is nothing like Shara Worden's debut. It just takes samples of her amazing voice from BMTW and works them into dance music. This disc is very disappointing. Some of the remixes really miss the point of the original song. If you are really into house or subterranean, you may find this album great, but one of the best parts of the first go through was that Shara wrote all of the music herself. Buy at your own risk.

4 out of 5 stars Torn down?.......2007-03-11

My Brightest Diamond is an unlikely enough band -- an opera singer singing stripped-down indiepop?

So it was even more worrisome to hear of an impending remix album, giving an electronic edge to those same songs. Let's be honest here -- most remixes are just techno beats laid over the original song, with maybe some shouted remarks by a rapper. "Tear It Down" is not such a remix album, thank God.

It starts off with the Alias remix of "Golden Star," a soaring little song that is given shimmering, epic proportions by a spray of delicate beats. The better remixes are the ones that stick in that vein -- the fragile "Workhorse (Lusine)," bittersweetly clattery "Disappear (Stakka)," twinkling "Good and the Bad Guy (Siamese Sisters)," the hesitant music-box chimes of "We Were Sparkling (Haruki)," and the gothic distortion of Blair Sinta's "Workhorse" remix.

Some, like David Keith's somnolent remix of "Something of An End," don't even appear to have been changed that much, just sort of embellished around the edges. And in none of these songs is there the too-common problem of just laying dancy techno over the original song.

But there are a few that are flops. The Gray Kid's "Dragonfly"has jagged, angular beats that clash with the song, and DJ Kenny's "Freak Out" is a weird, theatrical trip full of distorted whispers and squeals, while the same song done in "Gold Chains Panique Mix" is a droning, sleep-inducing reworking that just doesn't work.

Fortunately, the duds are far outnumbered by the really good remixes. Usually the better ones are quieter-sounding or more delicate, and the people doing them try to enhance whatever was beautiful and striking about the original songs, not drown them in samples and synth.

Sure, there's plenty of beats, chiming and extra melodies laid over the original. But the original sound is preserved and enhanced, whether it's a solemn mournful sound, a chilly sparkle, a shimmering ballad, or a music-box melody. And it's an even better when Shara Worden's rich voice rises over the beats, glitches and odd little notes.

It would have been ideal if the clubbier songs had been pruned out, but "Tear It Down" is still an excellent collection of remixes. Here's hoping Worden works with a few of these for her next album.

2 out of 5 stars Not a good mix.......2007-03-07

Unlike "Bring Me the Workhorse," a wonderful album, "Tear it Down" really does not hold up to more than 1 listen, if that. Basically, this is a re-working of the songs from "Bring me the Workhorse" into techno/electro music by various artists. Other than maybe the first 2 tracks, I don't think that the mix of MBD's music with the techno sound is successful. It comes across as an esoteric mutilation of "Bring me the Workhorse." If you're a huge techno fan, you might enjoy this. But for those of us who are not, but nonetheless fans of My Brightest Diamond, we can only hope that their next album will showcase their talents more effectively.

4 out of 5 stars What a remix album should sound like!.......2007-03-07

Ahh, the remix album. Clearly it's one of the most overdone, yet disappointing classifications an album can receive. Still, dozens of these albums are released every year, most of which serve as throwaway club bangers as opposed to actual music. Even fewer show respect for the artist's original work, opting rather to make the song something that is entirely their own, and entirely unlistenable in the process. So you can image my surprise when it was first revealed that My Brightest Diamond's stellar 2006 debut "Bring Me the Workhorse" was being reworked and remixed as 2007's "Tear It Down." You can also imagine my skepticism. However, the final result is far from what I'd expected.

"Tear It Down" is a really good remix album. The reason for this is simple. The artists who have participated in this project respected Shara Worden's original work. These songs are far different from what Worden originally presented to us several months ago, but the overall feel and themes of the album are not torn apart by someone else's careless remixing. Take, for example, Lusine's remix of "Workhorse." In many ways, it is very similar to the original version of the song. It feels like the same song, and keeps much of the original instrumentation. What it adds are really subtle drums, vocal effects, and minimal instrumentation. It really is a fantastic reinvention of what was already an awesome song.

Much less subtle is the Stakka remix of "Disappear," which features both commanding percussion and gentle strings. When the music drops out and Shara is left singing "I don't think we're meant to stay here" a capella in her upper registry, it is a beauty that we never got to experience in the song's original version. "Dragonfly" features an almost Dntel-ish feel, but remains just as haunting as ever, as is the now more-terrifying "Magic Rabbit." Both songs are prime examples of what a remix should be.

In actuality, most of the album follows this same idea. Much care and respect is given to the original music, and the experience is greater because of it. Even some of "Bring Me the Workhorse's" less appealing songs ("We Were Sparkling" or "The Good and the Bad Guy") have new life breathed into them here. With the exception of the two remixes of "Freak Out," both of which are club remixes, there's not a song on "Tear It Down" that would be incredibly difficult for any fan of My Brightest Diamond to find enjoyment in. Anyone who found "Bring Me the Workhorse" great, but short on lasting appeal should definitely look into purchasing this terrific reinvention of Shara Worden's 2006 masterpiece. If you're just not sure, however, I highly recommend you going over to Astmatic Kitty's website and streaming the album before you purchase it. [...]

4 out of 5 stars The Helio Sequence - 'Com Plex' (Cavity Search).......2004-10-25

Nine tunes of semi-innocent sounding space pop that has nothing to prove whatsoever.Hailing from Porland,OR,believe it or not, this is a duo.Brandon Summers is on guitar and vocals and Ben Weikel is on keyboards and drums.I happen to notice sort of a Beatles/Cheap Trick like melody here.Best tracks are "Just Married Jane",the spell-binding "My Heart",the soaring "Sassafras",their glossy cover of the Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows"(now, that's class-the way they do it anyway),"Big Jet Sky" and "Demographics".Okay,I confess.'Com Plex' is better than what I had expected. Was recorded in a one-room music store of the two musician's day job.I've caught these guys playing live and if you get the chance to do so yourself, take my advise:bring earplugs. They can probably up and quit their day job now.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Sounds.......2002-12-31

There's a mixture of fluid and static music in this record that makes it a bizarre cross between Kraftwerk and King Black Acid. Most people don't know who KBA is so instead we'll call it a mixture between Kraftwerk and early Pink Floyd. Throw into that bit of late-Beatles and Blurish Brit-pop. There's a soft electonica underbelly to Helio Sequence which heard by itself is almost trancy. On top of it is wet delay-ridden guitars soaring toward spacerock. Its innovative and gets better with every listen. Its power is in the music and instrumental jams/solos. The songs are not particularly catchy and lack strong hooks -- in other words after listening to the album no songs get stuck in my head. But it is also complex and textured which makes each listening a fresh experience. The album feels a bit restrained as if the musicians are unable or unwilling to let loose or perhaps that they are slaves to their electronica fundament. Check out track #3. That's about as poppy as they get.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!.......2002-05-01

I started sending out my bands demo a couple days before I got this album in the mail. It's intimidating to hear a couple of new guys that recorded at the house (much like I have) and they sound this good. I can't believe they're not bigger than they are. It's not just [good] music, its deep, highly creative, and catchy as hell. Some bands do something and you say "Wow, I know where your coming from!!" But with these guys your saying "Wow, I wish I knew where you were coming from!!" I bought this album because of the MBV comparisons, and I kept hearing the beatles mentioned and you do kind of get the sense of Kevin Shields doing Sgt. Peppers, but this album is by no means a rehash of anything I've ever heard. I gotta check out their next release!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing.......2001-09-13

Two kids perform and record an entire album and put together nine tunes worthy of heavy airplay. This is a truly professional-sounding production with catchy tunes and psychedelic, deep music. The comparison to the Beatles is natural, especially since they do a respectable cover. Very English-sounding.
I'm still amazed at how little-known this record is (but is probably understandable with the small label and little publicity). I expect we will be hearing much more from them, on a bigger label with an even more impressive mastering of their next album. Take this CD to your friends' next party and watch them as they listen to Com Plex. Pity it isn't available on vinyl.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing.......2001-05-03

This is undoubtedly the best album I've purchased this year. If you like Mercury Rev, this one is better. It's more creative, more energetic, more out there. It has just the right mix of lyrical melody and drugged-out oddity. All I can say is I hope they're putting out more some time soon.

4 out of 5 stars Great old time Hardcore!!.......2005-11-23

Tear It Down is Slapshot back at their best. This album is Slapshot's typical
speed, intensity, agressiveness & style similar to '16 Valve Hate', 'Old Tyme
Hardcore' & 'Digital Warfare'. The band covers many topics concerning subjects
relevent to today. One thing I love about Slapshot is Choke's direct, blunt, in
your face lyrics. The man simply does not hold back. Songs like 'F*** New
York' & 'Rap Sucks' are brutally blunt, and express Choke's anger & distastes
spewed form his screaming throat. You can feel his anger in these songs. Many
people may be offended by 'F*** New York', but hey, this is Choke's opinion, his
way of expressing himself & this is one thing I love about Slapshot. Choke
attacks everything & everyone on F*** New York including their sports teams,
Guiliani, Sex In The City, FDR Drive, Woody Allen, etc. I have nothing against
NY & actually love NYHC, Seinfeld & others mentioned in this song. What I like
about this song & 'Rap Sucks' is that Choke openly expresses his opinions & not
caring whatsoever what anyone thinks about it or him. I actually find these
songs very humorus & it makes these songs that much more enjoyable. Anyone who
is a fan of Slapshot knows exactly what I mean. 'Let's Spread Some Fear'
tackles the issues of The Patriot Act, the war in Iraq & U.S. politics &
policies. Of course Choke can't resist attacking all the stupid kids who think
they know what "Old School" is & should be about & other such topics we've come
to expect from Slapshot. If you're a fan of Slapshot you should definitley pick
this album up. If you're a fan of Old School Hardcore, then this is for you.
And if you're brand new to Hardcore, or want some agressive, angry, brutal punk
then give this album a listen. Now, if only it were a bit longer... (about 18
      minutes)

      1 out of 5 stars Please Don't Buy This............2005-03-19

You know, I've liked Slapshot for a long time - but no more. They were a major force in the hardcore movement, particularly in the straight-edge segment of hardcore, for a long time. But now.....Choke, you miserable sad excuse for a human being -how on earth can you make light of the tragedy that happened on 9-11 just to write a song? That's disgusting. The song "I Hate New York" is your standard-issue juvenile "I hate everybody" type garbage that Choke has been writing for quite a while, but "2 planes later and you're still there"? and "watch the skies". Who do you think you are? I realize that Boston and New York have had issues (among the hardcore scene) for many years. But there are things you just don't say. I truly hope that some New York boys go visit you in Boston (at whatever salon you're cutting hair at nowadays) and voice their displeasure at you for making light of 3,000+ deaths. Choke, you are scum. I threw this piece of garbage away. Just to show that this this negative review isn't just based on that one song I will add this. Their early stuff (Back On The Map,etc) was great. This crap, this is a has-been trying to cash in.

What do you get when you take a white guy with a voice like Hootie's (only considerably more soulful), and give him Leonard Cohen's gift for writing sardonically literate songs? Why, you get Machinery Hall's Mark Nelson, of course. His band's long-awaited new album, Tear It Down, might be the best recording these hometown heroes have ever produced. These thirteen grittily produced songs rock with an unnatural ferocity due to the power of Nelson's AC/DC-worthy guitar riffs and lyrics as straightforward and dead-on as the music that supports them. It's the ballads "Nif" and "Color of Good," however, which are the real standouts here: "You are the only one who ever got to me," sings Nelson in "Nif," and to his credit, he manages to make an ordinarily clichéd line sound transcendent. It's unfortunate that this album is only coming out now instead of five years ago, because these tunes are simply made for the disaffected youth who are currently (and unfortunately) enamored with baseball-hat-wearing frat-boy "rappers" instead of musicians with real substance like Machinery Hall. Expect to hear Tear It Down in heavy radio rotation on MTV and radio when the economy takes its inevitable downslide.

I thought this was a really good CD but they're much better live. I particularly liked Wearily (I always thought he was saying Warily) and Tear It Down. They're a local Boston band but they've been getting some national airplay too.
