Emotional and expressive Tchaikovsky without being lurid.......2006-06-16
What makes this generous (80 min.) CD welcome is that Bernstein, far from going over the top, proves himself a genuinely expressive Tchaikovsky conductor. There are no choirs or cannons in the 1812 Over.(church bells are overlaid in the finale, though), no saccharine underlining of melodies, and no faking the emotion to reach the grandstands. Bernstein was to the manner born in romantic music, so his Romeo and Juliet is exciting and heartfelt. The 1812 will feel a bit low-key to anyone who expects a circus act, but it's musically sound, in case that matters.
I'm not arguing that this CD contains any revelations, but these chestnuts are all very winning in Bernstein's hands. His Capriccio italien deserves better sound--it's a bit thin and tinny--but it dances and sings. My attraction was to the problematic tone poem, Hamlet, which Bernstein believed in eough to record a second time for DG with the Israel Phil. The classic Stokowski recording on Everest tops every critic's list, but Bernstein's sounds more natural in the lyrical sections and brings quite a few thrills in the bombastic rum-tum of this uneven work.

Drop dead gorgeous.......2005-07-04
Every now and then you get a CD come along where some really outstanding artist allows themself to just let their hair down for a moment. Of course it has to be done with aplomb and thorough good taste adding their unique touch of brilliance while sucessfully avoiding any hint of kitch. Russian Early Music pioneer Anatoly Grindenko here records songs from the time of Tsarist Russia. These are songs that transient political regimens would have tried to replace in the popular affection with political songs. Yet somehow these songs have survived in the hearts and affections of the Russian people and this peasant tradition of folk song that refused to die is presented with Grindenko's usual expertise and sung expertly with the utmost affection. In fact the songs were always sung by this choir for their own private fun but excluded from 'serious' concert performances. The quality of singing, as can be expected under Grindenko's expert choral direction, is superb througout. The end result is a lovely CD that can be highly recommended to anybody who just loves to listen to beautiful singing. After all the works of Tchaikovsky, Borodin and Stravinsky draw heavily on Russian folk song as a rich source of thematic material but any serious music lover would enjoy this CD just as much with its range of songs ranging from boisterous to charming to melancholy. Opus 111, as usual, provide expertly engineered sound to match. The end result is a drop dead gorgeous CD that will delight anyone lucky enough to discover this secret gem.
Brilliant !.......2001-12-26
This recording is a fantastic example of the russian choral tradition. Wonderful selections sung with obvious passion .The rousing patriotic tunes will make you want to march to the front, the romantic ballads will make you wish you never left and the songs of hearth and homeland will make you inch closer to your loved ones. If you have a passion for things "russian" this one just might keep you occupied for a while.

Infectious Mood, Glorious Tunes.......2004-09-04
Before purchasing this CD I had never heard of Léo Délibes (1836 -1891), and it is a measure of the confidence I had (and still have) in Naxos that I bought the disc anyway. And I was not disappointed. I suppose you could in one sense say that ballet music without the visual experience of the ballet is like using toothpaste when you don't have any teeth; but the music on this disc tastes so good that it's really worth listening to anyway. Délibes was obviously a master of this genre, and here on this CD there are gathered some of his best tunes in his wonderfully varied and rich orchestrations. This is a hum-along, foot-tapping job, but with plenty of musical detail to keep one's mind busy, too. The "Airs de danse dans le style ancien" from the play "Le Roi s'amuse" have kept me fascinated ever since I first heard the disc: they don't sound in the least like the French music of a century or two earlier, but still they manage to evoke a bygone age. And the brief extracts from Coppélia, Sylvia, La Source and Kassya all contain delightful material that is certainly more than just a backdrop for a troupe of ballet dancers.
The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra under Ondrej Lénard seems to have greatly enjoyed making the disc (at three recording sessions in 1988 and 1989). The musicians go at it with great gusto, and the mood is quite infectious. If I fail to award this disc five stars, then it is for the following reasons: 1. The recorded sound, although adequate, is not at all top-notch. A fellow Amazonite has described the early Naxos sound as "cavernous". I'm not sure that's the word I would choose, but at all events you have to imagine the microphones as being placed quite well away from the orchestra so as to capture the entirety of the sound better than the detail. Naxos does not manipulate its sound, which is positive, but the dynamic differences between the very loud passages and the quieter ones often mean that as a listener one feels that the more piano passages are not loud enough; if you turn the volume up, you get your ears blasted when the whole orchestra comes into play. 2. Connected with this is my feeling that the percussion could, in some instances, have been amplified: crashing cymbals should crash, but these sound almost as though they are behind the stage and not on it. 3. The documentation is, again, adequate, but I found the description of the plot of Coppélia confusing. Some more information about the music itself would also have been welcome but was not forthcoming.
Note added on 20 October 2005: It is perhaps a measure of the success of the Naxos disc that it motivated me to purchase the entire Coppélia ballet on DVD (in the historically accurate and wonderfully-produced performance of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, on BBC Opus Arte). What a superb piece of entertainment this is!
Le roi s'amuse: reason enough to own this CD.......2002-04-10
The music from "Le Roi S'Amuse" is reason enough to own this CD. While they imitate older musical forms (much like Respighi's "Ancient Airs and Dances"), these seven tracks also exhibit the virtues of Delibes' more familiar ballet music: tuneful, elegant, and eminently danceable.
The music from La Source is such a tiny sample, it's almost a tease. But the Coppelia tracks capture the highlights of that ballet. While I prefer recordings of the complete ballet, there's no denying that Ondrej Lenard coaxes very spirited renditions from his orchestra. The "Music of the Automata and Waltz" has a music-box quality that is very charming, and the Czardas is strong and resonant without being exaggerated.
To those interested in ballet and unfamiliar with Delibes - whose work set a new standard in ballet and inspired Tchaikovsky - this CD is a wonderful introduction. But even if you already have Coppelia in your collection, this CD is worthwhile because of "Le Roi S'Amuse."

A gorgeous, overstuffed Scheherazade a la Stokowski.......2006-02-21
Disney never set Scheherazade to animation, but if they ever do, this splashy, at times volcanic reading is the one they should choose. Stokowski recorded the work four times that I know of. This, the last, originally came out in Decca's Phase 4 Stereo (they've recently reissued it in a box set of Stokowski's complete Decca recordings, the bulk of which were for Phase 4), an early venture in extreme multi-miking. Every solo instrument marches forward and plays as loud as the rest of the orchestra combined, no mean feat for a bassoon.
In a sour mood I cringe at the vulgarity of this performance compared to Reiner's classic reading with the Chicago on RCA, but most of the time I realize that Scheherazade isn't the B Minor Mass, so why not goose it up? Musically speaking, Stokowski has a wonderful sense of drama and his many tempo fluctuations, though operatic, are in the gorgeous, overstuffed spirit of the work.
The Best Scheherazade I've Heard.......2005-11-28
I grew up listening to this recording on its original Phase 4 LP. Over the years I've owned or listened to other recordings of Scheherazade while waiting for this one to be released on CD. I missed its Decca CD release and am now thankful that Cala has reissued it. It is the best recording of Scheherazade out there. Stokowski was not rigid in his tempos for this recording and the music flows freely, hanging onto and savoring a phrase or note here, driving forward with intensity there. Stokowski really pulled the passion in the piece out of the London Symphony and they play exceptionally well and with fine solo playing throughout (I love the bassoon and oboe solos that come near the beginning of the second movement). Compared to this one, other recordings seem mechanical and passionless. The Marche Slav recording was done at a live concert and has some extremes in its tempi. In spite of this it is well played and has a thrilling ending. The bonus tracks of the rehearsal process are fascinating and brought back memories of my high school days in band and orchestra. You will not be disappointed by this recording.
It's good but maybe not what the critics said.......2004-06-29
Here's the "new" old "Scheherazade" from Stokowski that sent critics on both sides of the Atlantic a-twitter when it was re-released last year. Writers from Gramophone to American Record Guide went bonkers over this, exclaiming it the most exciting Stokowski "Scheherazade" ever recorded...even more exciting than his 1940 Philadelphia version that some writers love to no end. The sound on this CD is outstanding, just about out of this world. It was originally one of London's famous Phase 4 recordings, sometimes made with as many as 20 microphones and mixed like a modern high energy ensemble dance tune with a half-dozen engineers having input as well as the conductor. Stokowski loved tinkering with sound and you hear it all throughout this CD. Even though this is a garish-sounding CD, I agree with everything everyone said about all the sterling first chair players and soloists in the middle 1960s London Symphony Orchestra. They all play real well and put in a big time performance for the old man. However, I can't rate this version as highly as the RCA Victrola Royal Philharmonic Orchestra version where concertmaster Eric Gruenberg performed the violin solo better than in his London Symphony recording. Another thing that performance had going for it -- along with Gruenberg's exceptionally sweet playing -- is powerful timpani strokes in the opening "Sea and Sinbad's Ship" and during the closing pages of the performance, one of the most coloratura, kaleidoscopic wide screen symphonic canvasses ever composed. I like the Cala re-release and no praise could be too high for the sound or the solo work. But, for reasons stated above, I like the RPO version better and am far more satisfied with it than with the overripe London account. The RCA CD is also manufactured sound -- meaning not natural -- but the spotlighted timpani and better bass response lend a Russian feeling to the music that is lacking in this version.

Customer Reviews:
The modern Bolshoi.......2000-01-28
This recording illustrates the new period of the Bolshoi. The singers chosen represent the new and old stars of the Bolshoi opera. The veterans include Artur Eisen, and the modern stars include Vladimir Matorin (Rightly considered the best Ivan Susanin of the ninties), Tatyana Yerastova, Vitaliy Tarashenko, Larisa Rudakova (who sang the Majic Flute at the met), Pavel Chernykh, Vladimir Redkin and Maria Gavrilova. Feranec, who is now replaced by Mark Ermler as the cheif conductor of Bolshoi orchestra, seems to follow the orchestra trained by Ermler, Lazarev and Svetlanov, instead of leading it. The chorus is spectacular.
A recording any fan of Russian music must have........1999-09-20
The only negative aspect of this recordind is the conducting of Peter Feranec. He is a fine professional conductor, but he is not able to present this very unique music. Now the soloists. We have some strong basses. V. Ognovenko is of course more of a bass-bariton, than a bass but he is a fine Boris Godunov. V. Matorin, on the other hand is a very good Ivan Susanin. He may sound more convincing in a theater (I heard him as Susanin in the Bolshoi on three ocasions), but just the richness of his voice is satisfacory. Baritones V. Redkin and P. Chernykh are both good artists, if not great vocalists. Sopranos L. Rudakova and M. Gavrilova (both international stars)show the wide vibrato, so charachteristic among russian vocalists. Mezzo T. Erastova (or more correctly Yerastova), also with a wide vibrato, uses her unique voice with skill. V. Tarastchenko is a good dramatic tenor, who is singing a wrong role.
