Now as to the quality of the CD itself? That is barely acceptable. Simon Cowells studio rushed it, that is obvious - many technical glitches...BUT it does not detract unacceptably from the singer.
IGNORE THE 'PERFECTIONISTS' AND JUST ENJOY THIS ONE.......2007-07-31
PP STRUGGLES WITH THE HIGH NOTES - I thought PP occasionally sounded a bit flat and his voice wavered a little (this seemed more noticeable during the first 2 tracks). However, these were fleeting instances only and did not detract from my enjoyment (although more demanding listeners may find this less acceptable). One has to bear in mind also that, with this type of music, the occasional 'slip' becomes more magnified than would be the case with some pop or rock music.
PP's SINGING IS TECHNICALLY INFERIOR - I'm sure there are some people who, because of their knowledge/understanding of operatic music and the requisite vocal skills, can genuinely make such claims. Equally, I'm sure that there are a few others whose claims will be based on nothing more than petty snobbery and these people wouldn't recognize 'technical SUPERIORITY' even if they tripped over it in broad daylight.
THE ALBUM SUFFERS FROM POOR PRODUCTION - To an extent, I agree - it could have been better. Whilst the orchestral and choral arrangements are sumptuous, at times they are both 'too forward in the mix' and, now and again, they tend to drown out PP's vocals (but this problem is not persistant throughout the album).
PP IS BEING MARKETED IN A CYNICAL WAY - Well perhaps, but this is nothing new in the music business. It is certainly no justification for downgrading any rating for the album.
PEOPLE ARE BUYING HIS ALBUM BECAUSE THEY 'FEEL SORRY FOR HIM' - Possibly, but a very small minority only. It is more likely that many people are either, making a connection between PP's music and PP the man or, they simply identify with him. I see nothing wrong with this and, if it enhances their enjoyment of his music, then well and good.
Turning to the album itself, this is the first operatic or 'operatic crossover' album I have ever bought. I sometimes listen to this type of music, but not very frequently. I bought 'One Chance' because I saw PP on 'BGT' and I liked his voice. So please bear with me if some of my review is not very meaningful for you.
THE SONGS : They are all beautiful songs - sung in Italian or English plus one sung in Spanish and they are well known songs - I'm sure many will be very familiar to you. I don't wish to take anything away from PP, but I think the song selection has more than a little to do with the popularity of this album in the UK.
THE VOICE : PP has a strong tenor voice, but not in any overpowering sense (rather the opposite I'd say). I've heard 'Nessun Dorma' sung by Russell Watson and Luciano Pavarotti and, to my untrained ears, they do SOUND better; but, curiously, neither of these versions do as much for me as PP's version (Pavarotti's comes the closest). However, I'll tell you something - whatever vocal weaknesses PP has (real or imagined), he has an emotional quality to his voice that you won't find with most other similar singers ('technically superior' as they may be). I can't quite put my finger on it, but there is something 'quietly moving' about the way in which he sings - I would suggest that THIS is the main reason why most people are buying his album; and, when it comes to MY listening enjoyment, a voice with an emotional edge comes high up on my list. The audience reaction when PP first auditioned and sung 'Nessun Dorma' on 'BGT' (can be viewed on You Tube) is, I think, testament to this.
Some brief comments about selected tracks :
NESSUN DORMA - a song which needs no introduction - poignant and dramatic, an absolute 'stunner'. The vocals are, perhaps, not perfect, but more than competent.
CON TE PARTIRO (Time To Say Goodbye) - a fine rendition of this bittersweet song which many people will associate with Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli. Towards the end, the choir 'kicks in' and I though the sound was too strident; this is a delicate song and the use of a choir, in this manner, is totally inappropriate (fortunately, the effect lasts for only half a minute or so).
OGNUNO SOFFRE (Everybody Hurts) - swirling strings and acoustic guitar accompaniment; the subdued, yet crisp, percussion ensures that this R.E.M. classic still retains some of it's original 'pop character'.
POR TI SERE (You Raise Me Up) - despite being sung in Italian, there's a distinct Gaelic feel to this song (weird - maybe, but it works); PP's vocals are as close to perfection as any sane person could reasonably expect. Again, the choir is introduced towards the end, but this time to good effect - more in keeping with the slightly dramatic mood of this song.
CAVATINA - a beautifully wistful song which is featured on the soundtrack of 'The Deer Hunter'. Sonically, I thought this was one of the best tracks - lovely, fluent acoustic guitar, PP's vocals are flawless and his delivery is nothing short of exquisite; and the vocal/orchestral balance is first class.
The remaining songs are all highly enjoyable; everyone will have their own favourites, mine were : 'Nessun Dorma', 'Por Ti Sere', and 'Cavatina'.
If you like 'operatic crossover' music, then I think you will enjoy this album - the only possible downside being that you may already have most of the songs by other artists (but I still think it's worthwhile listening to PP's renditions of these songs). Just ignore what the 'perfectionists' might have to say and ENJOY. I don't care if PP isn't 'technically perfect', and anyone who thinks he can't sing must be crazy. OK, I'll concede that this might not be 'serious' operatic music, but how many 'regular' listeners, to popular music, really want this anyway ? I doubt very much whether this, or PP's lack of classical training, will in any way diminish the pleasure to be had from this album. For casual listeners, who might want only 2 or 3 representative albums in their collection, this is a 'must have'.
I'm only giving 'One Chance' 4-stars - I thought there were some very occasional flaws in PP's vocals, and sometimes (and ONLY sometimes), I thought the production left something to be desired. Neither of these 'deficiencies', by themselves, would merit the deduction of one star but, when considering them together, I think it would be misleading to give a higher rating; conversely, giving a rating of 3-stars or less, would be doing PP and his music a disservice.

My favorite tracks are Nessum Dorma, Time To Say Goodbye, Caruso, Nella Fantasia, and Cavatina to name a few. I could have easily named them all. With the accompaniment of the London Symphony Orchestra (most songs), Paul's voice will penetrate your heart and rest in your soul.
This is not an album to use as background music, but rather to sit in an easy chair or recliner with your favorite beverage and prepare to travel to a place where the mundane activities of daily life will not matter, where you will be lifted up and set free.
The CD may have minor flaws but they are easy to overlook with the overall quality of this work. If you like classical, opera crossover music you will appreciate this album. If you have never listened to this type of music before then it is time to give it "One Chance" and join Paul Potts on his "bus journey to Never-Never-Land".

A Fine Frenzy is actually just a fine young singer-songwriter from Seattle, born Alison Sudol. A self-taught piano player, on her debut album she pairs sweeping orchestral arrangements with dreamlike lyrics inspired by the classic works of fantasy writers like CS Lewis, EB White, and Lewis Carroll. Add to that a propensity for frilly shirts and cryptic song titles such as "The Minnow & the Trout" and you half-expect to find a back alley Joanna Newsom. Instead Sudol specializes in accessible pop epics, the kind of songs that fit perfectly over the end credits of a great Hollywood tearjerker. I think Alison Sudol may have the loveliest voice I have heard since Sarah McLachlan and/or Eva Cassidy. That is a major concession from me. I am a lyrics lover to the core, and so far I am impressed. Maybe I am easy, but you will have to decide for yourself.

One Cell in the Sea: A sonorous journey.......2007-07-19
Such is the case with A Fine Frenzy. When I heard their album, One Cell in the Sea, I was struck by its dimensionality. With her vocal and writing talents, singer/songwriter Alison Sudol folds our hand into hers and guides us through her mysterious wonderland (evidenced by the album's cool cover and booklet art), conjuring picturesque landscapes with "Come On, Come Out", the excellent "Rangers", "You Picked Me" and "The Minnow and the Trout" and ensnaring us in sumptuous wine-dark woodlands with her intimate offerings "Almost Lover", "Hope for the Hopeless", "Near to You" and "Ashes and Wine".
By the time the final track, "Borrowed Time", concluded, I found myself in a well of thoughts and emotions, albeit delightedly so. Sudol has not only crafted an outstanding and bravely personal album, but a magical world I look forward to visiting time and again.

Loaded with lyrics about nightmares, pain, isolation and broken relationships, One X, the sophomore effort from Three Days Grace should be a downright bummer of a ride. Instead, the listener manages to find uplift lurking beneath the weighty lyrics as the quartet churns out a series of anthemic, crunch-chord songs. The band moves from arena-ready light metal with "It's All Over" to the sex groove of "Animal I Have Become," before plunging the listener into full-on chaotic heaviness during the anti-alienation anthem "Riot" and easing us into the atmospheric future hit "Get Out Alive." Throughout, TDG remains true to its core alt-metal sound. Three Days Grace is not only for one group of people. A lot of people I know and people I don't know love Three Days Grace.Rockers, punk, and the girls scream for them. I went to their concert when they came to buffalo and they were sweet. I never heard a band that sounded just as good live as they are on the CD.Here are some of there songs: Are You Ready, Pain, Never Too late, Just Like You, I Hate Everything About You, and tons more.
When I first listened to the CD I never stopped.In my opinion this CD is amazing and I can't wait until they make another one.I play the drums and when I heard the drummer I was BLOWN away.
I recommend this CD to everyone who is willing to listen to something new.You will be impressed,Even my mom loves them.

I like the CD One X by Three Days Grace. This CD has 12 songs on it. These songs are about 3 minutes long. Three Days Grace is a Canadian band. I like the songs Riot, One X and all the other song on the CD. There is some swearing in three of the songs. My opinion of this CD would be a 10 out of 10. I love this CD so much that I downloaded it on my I pod. I would recommend this CD to kids that are older than 12 because of the swearing. I would also recommend this CD to people that like rock music

Ryan is a great talent, singing with such soul. He sings with such range and seems comfortable in several different styles. Some songs remind me of Memphis Stax (in the sytles of Sam & Dave, Otis Redding) of 60's Motown (Do the 45, I Found a Love), some like Keb'Mo (We got love), and some have a little funk (Nobody).
Tell your friends. Buy the album. See him live. You won't be disappointed.
A great talent like his should be appreciated by the masses.

That said, the songs "Nobody" and "We Got Love" are unbelievably good and worth the price of the disc alone. I've been playing them constantly. In another era they'd garner him instant stardom. They may even do that now.

Shaw clearly demonstrates the old adage of RESPECT as well. There's no explicit language or situations that would prevent an Old School grandparent from introducing the kids to this music.

As it turned out, Led Zeppelin's infamous 1969 debut album was indicative of the decade to come--one that, fittingly, this band helped define with its decadently exaggerated, bowdlerized blues-rock. Biggest ripoff in the history of music!.......2007-07-05
1) Good Times Bad Times-A great Zeppelin tune, hands down! Unfortunately it is the only one they truly wrote for this album.
2) Babe I'm Gonna leave You-Another great Zeppelin tune? Not quite. This is a dead ripoff of Joan Baez's version of an Ann Breden song of the same title. Check it out...same lyrics and music. How Zeppelin originally credited themselves for writing this song is despicable.
3) You Shook Me-A Credited Willie Dixon tune. However, if you listen to Jeff Beck's version on Truth, you will find shocking similarities.
4) Dazed and Confused- A Zeppelin warhorse if there ever was one. Too bad the song is a dead ripoff of Jake Holmes' song titled, of course, Dazed and Confused. Oh, it's just a title you say? Listen to Holmes' version and you will hear the same exact riff! When Page was with The Yardbirds, Holmes was an opening act and hence, Page's introduction to a song he would selfishly give himself credit for writing.
5) Your Time Is Gonna Come-Listen to the intro to this song and then listen to Traffic's Dear Mr. Fantasy and tell me if you don't see a similarity, or in fact, a carbon copy!
6) Black Mountain Side-This is laughable!! Bert Jansch wrote and performed a song titled..HAHA, Black Water Side. Interesting to note that the riffs are shockingly similar..And it makes me wonder...
7) Communication Breakdown-A rewrite of Eddie Cochran's Nervous Breakdown.
8) I Can't Quit You Baby-Another Willie Dixon cover which they appropriately give him credit for. A rarity on this release.
9) How Many More Times-What do you get when you combine a Howlin' Wolf cover of How Many More Years and Albert King's The Hunter? You get THIS song credited to Zeppelin as writers.
Don't believe me? If you can find the above mentioned songs I DARE you to play them back to back with the Zeppelin versions. Zeppelin proves, on this release anyway, that they were the greatest cover band in the history of music. I am sickened and disappointed. How sad that such great musicians can so obviously rip off other artists and not give them credit for these songs. Pathetic, actually.
Sadly, these are not the only songs in Zeppelin's catalogue that are partially or fully taken from other artists that Zeppelin shamelessy wears as their own. I also have references for Stairway to Heaven, Custard Pie, Whole Lotta Love, The Lemon Song, In My time Of Dying, When the Levee Breaks..etc..Yes, eventually Zep DID give SOME artists their just due...after being sued. You can argue and say Who Cares? These versions are great, and that may very well be. But the truth should be known and if you ARE going to listen to Zeppelin at least be aware of what has taken place. It's ok to cover someone else's song...IF YOU GIVE THEM PROPER CREDIT WITHOUT PASSING IT OFF AS YOUR OWN AND DECEIVING THE PUBLIC. As a music fan, I am insulted. Why do you think Zep sold all the rights to their songs to Atlantic Records? One word: Lawsuits!
These 'Gods' of rock are thieves and if you're serious about music and care anything about artistic integrity you should be at least a little bit angry at this deceitfulness. If you're not then either integrity means nothing to you OR you are as big a thief as Page and comp. were.
Zeppelin's First.......2007-06-22
Led Zeppelin I began the start of the world's most famous and most influential heavy bluesy folk rock band ever. Also Led Zep are cited as pioneers of heavy metal (although 1/3 of I's music was acoustic) just before Black Sabbath hit.
Advancing the sound of Cream, Led Zeppelin created a sound that was unique and one that was all their own back in 1969. Heck, Led Zeppelin advanced the boundaries of Rock 'n' Roll and inspired millions of others in their wake.
Besides The Beatles, Led Zeppelin was the first Rock band that I have ever heard and got into.
My Father used to shake the whole house while playing "Dazed and Confused" late at night, almost every night downstairs in our basement at that time. Slowly the song crept into my thoughts and introduced me to a whole "new" sound being only 9 or 10 years old.
I can still feel the vibrations under my feet from listening to that deep descending bassline that begans "Dazed and Confused". Still my favorite song on this, their debut.
"Good Times Bad Times" kicks this album off and early on in my childhood this was one of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs. It's just really catchy and upbeat & contains a swirling guitar effect set by Jimmy Page(one of the greatest guitarists ever).
"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" is still one of the most beautiful and most memeorable acoustic tracks that I have ever heard - "I Can hear it Calling me..." - The song was inspired by Joan Baez's song from 1962.
Other favorites of mine include : "Communication Breakdown" and "How Many More Times" - which in the early days was also Led Zep's (The Hammer Of the Gods) closing number during concert tours.
Led Zeppelin's First will always be one of my All-Time Favorite albums and it also holds one of my fondest childhood memories.

Maybe it's the fact that the production is amazing for 1969 standards. Seriously, how many albums back then were this loud? Maybe Tommy from the Who. I can't think of many others. Black Sabbath's debut was released a year later, so that doesn't count.
Anyway, I really like what Zeppelin was doing here. You have fairly lengthy and successful attempts at blues rock, with extraordinary jamming skills scattered throughout the album. Zeppelin was just not the same after this one. I especially love the drumming and the creepy bass work. Great album.

Out of the ashes of the Yardbird's came rock's most skilled - if not most important - guitarist of all time. Jimmy Page, joining forces with Plant, Jones, and Bonham, formed what would become the definitive hard rock band. Not only did Led Zeppelin help define a new genre of rock, they explored every possible point. This album was the jumping point.
Let's cut to the chase; it don't matter how these four geniuses came together, the important thing is that they did. The music here is very good, several of which are classic rock radio staples. The opener "Good Times, Bad Times" is a relatively soft introduction to what the rest of the album had in store. The slow blues of "Dazed and Confused" and manic rush of "Communication Breakdown" as well as the great instrumental "Black Mountain Side" help to create with a single stroke Zeppelin's distinctive sound.
I own the original vinyl from 1969, and this transfer is wonderful. But it's expected; Page is so darn protective of his (or their) music that he wouldn't settle for a remaster that didn't sound excellent. This is one of the greater albums of all time, yet is not the finest in the Zeppelin catalog. Anyone who is looking to get into Zeppelin should not start here, though; "IV" is the best place to go first, followed by "II" and "Physical Graffiti".

Add 3121 to the mounting pile of evidence: Prince is the black Beck. He's a whole lot sexier, no doubt, but there's more to both musicians than image. All-out weirdness for one. Edginess for another. And a fine-tuned sense of how to combine the two to create some of the decade's most vital music for a third. Prince--looking ageless in videos for the first two singles, the controversy-courting "Black Sweat" and the sauna-steeped "Te Amo Corazon"--proves fearless as ever here, folding fat slabs of disco-funk into rock, heaping measured doses of hip-hop atop soul-tinted jazz supports, and slamming Latin rhythms against old-school R&B riffs. Nothing sounds as slinky-stylish-smart. And nobody delivers quite so deliciously, especially when what they're delivering is ultimately a madcap sonic mash. The usual hype surrounding a Prince release attended this one; over the long-term, expect a few standouts within a way worth-it set to emerge. What Operation Ivy is to the latter-day ska revival, Gogol Bordello is to the increasingly popular revival of Eastern European music. Blending gypsy rhythms with the intensity of alternative-rock, metal (and even rap), the group is justly renown for their charged live performances. The title track is a lovely mix of Balkan strings with pleasant screams from lead singer/ shouter Eugene Hutz. If only more of the songs followed its lead. As a whole, the album sounds like Leftie bumper stickers set to vaguely aggro "gypsy rock." "My Strange Uncles from Abroad" makes its political statement in a personal and affecting manner, but other tunes such as "Forces of Victory" are merely affected. It's hard not to agree with their world view or love for the woozy sounds of Eastern Europe. But on this album, GB make the Dead Kennedys seem subtle. Although a formidable live presence, the New York band have been hit and miss on record.
Super Taranta! is a step forward. Roaring choruses are interspersed with manic violins, dub interludes and raucous polemics growled by luxuriantly moustachioed frontman Eugene Hutz.
"Gogol Bordello"'s red-blooded passion is refreshing, and they finally have another batch of boisterous singalongs to match it.
This 'gypsy punk' cacophony is all those times rolled into one.

And they stick to their past sound in "Super Taranta!" -- a mad, frenetic ride splattered with heavy doses of Balkan folk music. Their sound and vibe don't shift too much in this one, but their energy and wildness hasn't failed them, or their kooky blend of gypsy and Pogues-style rock'n'roll.
"If we are here not to do/what you and I wanna do?/And go for rubber, crazy with it/why the hell we are livin' here? DAH!" Eugene Hutz calls out a capella...
... just before the music lapses into a swaying, colourful Balkan melody... which goes into fast-forward about halfway through. Hutz is roaring and growning about how "there were never any good old days/they are today, they are tomorrow!/It's a stupid thing to say" as the music revs around him.
It gets even more energetic in the wild festival sound of "Wonderlust King," and the driving bass-rocker "Zina Marina." With those done, they spin off into a series of energetic Balkan rockers: accordion pop, jibbering fiddlerock, darkly gleeful punk, wailing guitar laments, and what sounds like the theme song to a gypsy James Bond movie.
It has to be admitted, Gogol Bordello hasn't really changed their sound much. Not that stops it from being fun frenetic, colourful, slightly messy and very insane, without a shred of self-consciousness. It's a Jackson Pollock of Balkan noise.
But "Super Taranta" does adjust their sound a bit -- there's a bit more gypsy in their music, and a few bits less punk, with tighter melodies than before. We get a tangle of raging, twining guitar and bass (and Eliot Ferguson's solid drums) driving the melodies along, but often they're swathed in dancey fiddle and blaring accordion. It's a pretty wild ride, all around.
And Hutz provides practically all the singing himself, in a voice that always sounds like he's about to pop a vocal cord. Raw, rough, untamed. He growls, wails, howls, and roars out his political, party-hearty lyrics: "My strange uncles from beyond/I'll meet 'em on the cosmos street/and we will drink to how we told/to never trust a plastic beat!"
"Super Taranta" is the sort of music that gets your heart racing and adrenaline shooting. A raucous, wild party album for an East European festival.

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. Now this is more like it. A song-by-song retort to fans who might confine Wilson to some trailer-park queendom and to critics who might dethrone her for All Jacked Up, a half-hearted, hurried sequel to her quintuple-platinum debut, Gretchen Wilson's third album fires on all radio-ready-honky-tonk-and-hillbilly-rock cylinders. It's also a portrait of a tough, talented woman making her own way in what's still largely a man's, man's country world. She gets plenty of help from hot Nashville writers John Rich, Rivers Rutherford, and Vicky McGehee, but her working-class and feminist spin on country archetypes--temptation, whiskey, work, and Mom--is authentic and her own. Even when, as on the title track, she revisits "Redneck Woman," she retools the conceits with one of her best melodies. When she goes for the throat on "You Don't Have to Go Home," with a ripping fiddle line and an AC/DC guitar break, she's not just wailing last call: she's showing the whole honky-tonk who's boss. She still loves classic rock boogie--"Place in the Whiskey" quotes both Bob Seger and the melody of "Call Me the Breeze"--but she counters all the butt-kicking with solid ballads like "Heaven Help Me," "Pain Killer," and "To Tell You the Truth," her most heartbreaking and honest lyric. Underrated, but another fine Gretchen Wilson album.......2007-07-23
Honestly, this isn't the way it should've gone down for Gretchen Wilson. When HERE FOR THE PARTY bowed in 2004, it was the most (or atleast one of the most)anticipated country album(s) of the year. It slid in behind the unstoppable Usher who'd had the no. 1 spot locked for several weeks and sold 228,000, not bad for a debut artist. It spawned the massive crossover hit "Redneck Woman", which peaked in the top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, a very esteemed achievement for a country single. It propelled her debut album to multi-platinum status - approximately 4 million sold in just the U.S. alone. With the processes of propelling a debut artist to success with here debut album, all looked like it was set it stone that Gretchen Wilson was country's next big superstar in the league of Faith Hill or Shania Twain. Then 2005's ALL JACKED UP arrived to debut at no. 1 with 264,000, more than here debut. However, the "Redneck Woman" styled single "All Jacked Up" failed to rack up reviews even close to that of the single that made Gretchen Wilson, well Gretchen Wilson. Sure, the album didn't go unnoticed in the sense that it didn't sell, but how does 1.1 million compare to 4 million. Making a promising career's problems worse, ONE OF THE BOYS just maybe the sinker. With a tepid no. 5 debut and a devastatingly low 73,000 copies sold, first week sales and follow-up week sales of this fine country album by Wilson have been disappointing.
Sure, ONE OF THE BOYS is a credible, strong effort. But ONE OF THE BOYS lacks two things that made even the underrated ALL JACKED UP a moderate success. One, it lacks "Redneck Woman" which will probably never be replicated by Wilson, ever and two, it lacks anything that remotely sounds close to "Redneck Woman". Even ALL JACKED UP had "All Jacked Up", despite how unnoticed it ultimately went. It's that 'bad-girl' appeal that Wilson had on HERE FOR THE PARTY that disipated with her forthcoming albums that lost some of Wilson's fans. That coupled with the growing devastation of album sales has practically sunk ONE OF THE BOYS. Enough chit-chat about commercial success, let me discuss the album itself.
The album opens with "Girl I Am", which is solid G.W., though not as energized or as exhilarating as the openings of previous G.W. albums ("Here for the Party" and "All Jacked Up"). Vocally, Wilson is great and there is still an air of catchiness as Wilson sings lines like "I don't ever make apologies/ because I don't give a damn..." which leaves hope to the fans that left Wilson that the 'redneck woman' is still in her. "Come To Bed" features John Rich from none other than crazy country duo Big & Rich and the blend is magnificent between him and G.W. The songwriting is top-rate and the hook is more accesible for singing along here than it was on "Girl I Am". Sure, it isn't the second coming, but what is these days? "One of the Boys" serves to buck the trend with title-tracks and despite its conservative tempo, the songwriting is ever vigorous with its comical overtones and Wilson as always is at her best, 'redneck woman' or not. Three for three ladies and gents.
"You Don't Have to Go Home" is the best track up to this point from ONE OF THE BOYS with its country-rock feel and sick guitars. Despite the repetitive nature of the track, it keeps the air of 'traditionalist' country alive and that is very important. "Heaven Help Me" shows an even mellower Wilson (which seems to be an adverse effect for some fans unfortunatly) backed by acoustic sounds of piano, guitar, and strings. Despite her mellow turn, the bluesed-out "There's a Place in the Whiskey" is more production than vocal, but it is a welcome addition to G.W.'s catalogue of songs. Sure it's a bit too busy, but none can deny the potent nature of the blues licks. "If You Want A Mother" is solid while "Pain Killer" is a bit awkward, though still a solid track. What is notable about "Pain Killer", which is by no means my favorite track, is that vocally Wilson is at her strongest and the songwriting is nearly flawless. Eight for eight and still going strong.
"There Goes The Neighborhood" is a personal favorite of mine once again employing blues-influenced riffs. "Good Ole Boy" uses 'cutesy' songwriting, which the unstoppable G.W. pulls off perfectly. Finally the closer "To Tell You the Truth" is heavier in its overall tone as Wilson tackles serious songwriting, which may/may not be a hindrance. It isn't catchy like the rest of her tunes, but if you commit yourself as a true Gretchen Wilson fan, you will appreciate the message and the idea that Wilson is trying to emote on the closing track.
Overall, ONE OF THE BOYS would be a fine album if it was another country artist besides Gretchen Wilson, which is unfortunate. No, it isn't as memorable as her first and maybe in some respects as her underrated second, but it is still very fine in my eyes, despite what the charts or anybody says. I hope that ONE OF THE BOY'S commercial woes don't sink the career of a very promising, young country star. 4 stars.
