Album matches content hype.......2007-05-31

I intially bought this album for a few selections I had heard from Classical 102.1 (KDFC-FM). I was pleasantly surprised that the entire album has a very satisfying collection of the greatest marches. I am very pleased with this album, and would recommend it for anyone who likes a broad range of famous marches.

My father was a Marine in the ETC, he told me stories about how they went floor to floor checking for bad guys humming this music. I think it is great music to listen to, I really like track 3, it says so much in the title alone. I hope everybody like this music as much as I do!

Excellent, but one missing..........2007-03-07

These are fabulous marches played with huge amounts of zest, but one of Fiedler's best RCA marches - the Zacatecas March - was left out!!! Why??? There would have been plenty of room, and it seems to be available on a Japanese release - why not this one?

Otherwise, no hesitation at all.

Simply a Fun Set of Marches.......2003-10-18

In the 5th grade, I tried out for Little League. My desire to play baseball was not rooted in any love for the sport. I thought my father wanted me to play a sport. I was so great at the tryouts; he said some memorable words to me. "Tim, I think you ought to stick with playing the clarinet." I am sure he was trying to spare me humiliation on the athletic field. Little did he know he was starting my love affair with music, a far greater gift.

Perhaps because I was in the school band, I gravitated toward marches, and this collection of marches conducted by Arthur Fielder was one of the first recordings I purchased (6th or 7th grade I believe). At the time (the mid 1970's) it was only available on LP. As soon as the CD was available, I purchased it for nostalgic reasons. This collection had many popular marches such as the Grand March from Aida, Stars and Stripes Forever, Pomp and Circumstance, as well as some lesser known marches. This was one of the collections that piqued my interest in orchestral music. Though the marches could probably best be termed "light classical," it was an introduction to more serious music. Many years later I used this same recording when I taught as background music during art or spelling lessons. Again, it served as an introduction to more serious music.

This is not a complicated set; it is simply a little jewel that is a joy to listen to and a fun addition to a music collection.

Great Marching Music.......2000-11-14

Even though I am a Yankee I still love "Dixie." This is great music for pre-school children and those just entering school. I think it helps build character. I like this album.

Man Hol up! I first heard this CD when I was a Freshman at C.H Milby H.S back in H-Town! We rocked this sucka all the time!The Beats and the Rhymes are SUPA TIGHT! This is a must have C.D if you collectin' those H-Town or Down South records. street Military shoulda got Nation Wide recognition for this! They Still deserve it!! Street Military"Dont Give a Damn" is 1 of many great albums they have released and is well put together with the most lyrically advanced MCs I have ever heard plus tracks that have a mix of sounds and melodies that make you jam to thier records. Every song on here is deserves 5 stars and every album on BeatBox Records from Street Military and affiliated rappers deserves a 5 star I try to tell everyone I can this group is for real cant many rap as good as them. Just keep up with their releases and solo projects which have guest appearances from members of the group and from members of Killa Klan. They just released a new album so go get that its called "Steel Gangstaz" I give it a 5 start too someone needs to promote these guys becuase they are to tight of rappers not to be World Wide! This right here is what hard houston rap is all about.This is street military at there best, all the songs are off the hook,you'll love every song on here.I know there aren't very many songs but trust me it's worth it.Don't waste your money on the other albums only buy "Don't give a damn"and "NEXT EPISODE" the other albums are remixed versions of these two.There aggressive sound with top notch production makes this a potent album. Street Military are well loved in h-town and the south and are very underrated. Buy this album and look for the NEW full album coming in 2000

Continuing Riccardo Chailly's topical Shostakovich recordings (he's already visited the composer's jazz-inflected and dance pieces), this collection of music for film offers the series greater heft. The music here is as entangled in politics and pop culture as the jazzy and dancy material, but here the emotions are more complex and the execution more exciting.

The films Shostakovich was scoring somehow sought legitimacy or outright approval from Soviet power regimes, but as in all his music, Shostakovich enacted subtle subversions. The parade-step march cadences of The Counterplan are exaggerated just enough to integrate all kinds of conflicting dark undertows, emphasized coyly by Chailly and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The excerpts from Alone are all over the map, spooky and turbulent and bleak in equal measures, in answer to so many mandated bright, blasting musical ventures elsewhere in the Soviet cultural regime. The works continue until 1967, with a twisty waltz from Sofia Perovskaya, which seems more like a distant comment on the notion of a dance piece than music scripted for dance. For its mix of big, lit sweeps and minute, shadowy motions, this is one of the best single-CD Shostakovich sets--themed or not--in print. --Andrew Bartlett

A Little Gift I Treasure Very Much!.......2007-07-23

I have always been very good about seeing my doctors, etc. regularly, and taking good care of myself.

~flashback to 2002, at my opthalmologist's, and have just had dialators placed in my eyes, and have been shuttled into the inner waiting room until I am ready for my examination. Dr. "D" always had classical music playing at a "just right" level for relaxing. This particular day, this lovely, lilting, and sort of hypnotic piece came over the speakers, lulling me nearly to sleep. I could not get it out of my head, and was still "playing it" in my brain after the visit was over and I was at the reception desk, paying his wife for my visit, and scheduling a two week follow-up. I asked her what had been playing, and so she went in and brought out the two album cases that were in the machine. One was Schubert sonatas--I knew it wasn't that. The other album was this one, the Shostakovich film music. So I thanked her, and said I'd have to watch for it. When I went back for my follow-up, she passed me a little foil shopping bag with a ribbon on the top of it with a cheery "Enjoy, Greg"! In the bag was a copy of this album that she had picked up for me! (Such a lovely lady)

When I got home I played it, and the piece is the op.97, Romance from Gadfly...what a lovely piece of music. Just like a lazy summer afternoon, when you would, surely, see these insects floating indolently in the air.

The other pieces are all very interesting, and fun, too, and this is a wonderful foray into unknown or uncharted waters (at least for me). I love this album, and listen fairly frequently to it. There are 3 albums in a series, this "Film" one, a "Jazz" one, and the "Dance" one. I enjoy all of them, but this one I play most frequently.

Riccardo Chailly is a truly great conductor, I feel, and is one of the few that "take me back", or "make me think about" the conductors from earlier that I remember. This album in particular makes me think, fondly, about Stokowski, and Reiner frequently when I play it. Presentation? Or something else? I do not know, but it does, and, it IS a great album. A worthy addition to your collection, be assurred. ~operabruin

This recording is excellent. The works are rather light so one does not notice at first that the recording is that good. After some listebning I notice and i Am sure you will do too. Pirogorov and Sofia Petrovskaja i like best. Great recording.

This is the perfect album for anyone who believes Shostakovich was only capable of writing music that expressed his inner turmoil.
Here is an album of the composer just doing his job (writing soundtracks for propaganda films) and showing he's capable of playing the field like a consummate pro.
Many of the melodies may sound vaguely familiar, and it's no wonder; they were often pilfered by other assembly line arrangers for Hollywood musicals and other upbeat entertainment.
I'd have to agree with the previous reviewer, who thinks track 25 is the best. It's the Romance from "The Gadfly", which is arguably Shostakovich's greatest melody, played here with perfection; the "lazy" pizzicato and slightly staggered fourth beat in the measure is something I haven't heard before on this piece, and it works very nicely for these ears.

A Unique Collection of Works.......2000-11-25

The film scores of Dmitri Shostakovich are certainly not his best works, but they are definetly worth a look. There is a great range of music on this CD, from the joyful 'Tale of the Silly Little Mouse' to the harshness of 'Hamlet', and Chailly and his players give solid performances throughout. I wouldn't really recommend this as an introduction to Shostakovich's works, but if you're a fan, then it would make a great addition to your collection.

Track 25 is the best.......1999-06-17

Shostakivich wrote some 'heavy' music, but in his better moments he wrote some beautiful melodies (e.g. The Jazz Suite) and film themes including The Tale of the silly little mouse'. What a pity that you have to wait until track 25 for the best piece - the Romance from the 'Gadfly' (Theme music from the BBC series 'Reilly, ace of spies'). The definitive recording of this piece was the version by the USSR Cinema Symphony Orchestra, with Khatchaturian conducting, but the version on this recording is also excellent.

How these guys haven't caught on yet is beyond me but they can flow. On next episode they all combine for one of the stongest raps Iv'e ever heard. To hell w/ all this jay z method man bullsh**t. These guys tell how it is and what they've been through and that's real. Check this out esp. no 1 next episode cuz it's ruthless and that's what street rap is all about.

Although this is his debut solo album K.B. is a seasoned veteran. He is an original member of legendary Houston rap group Street Military (Beat Box/Wild Pitch/Capitol Records). He joined the group at age 13 (the youngest) and quickly became the prominent voice. In addition to Street Military KB appeared on the highly successful radio track "Northside" and has worked with Scarface of the Geto Boys, 8-Ball & MJG, Lil Keke, Slim Thug, and many others. wrong album to screw.......2001-11-16

man if u dont know who street military is then u aint a fan of texas rap!!!! street military is the best and most underrated group to ever come from texas they were spittin $hit back in like 93 before most of these new dudes even hit the scene. the reason this cd doesnt work is because that album is so old and their type of music is already kind of slow moving and no songs on there were made to be screwed. people think that u can just screw anything and make it good, thats not true u gotta have the right type of song. and to that dude that said the military aint tight he probally never even heard of em before this cd. theyre more of a hardcore group talkin about real problems and $hit not ballin with platinum teeth. if u want to hear sum classic texas underground pick up the original album and get their new one its the $hit!!!!

Well im a big Swishahouse fan and me bein from TX, i love that dirty south hip hop. So i saw this album and it had the name swishahouse on it so i picked it up thinkin that it was a swishahouse classic joint. but when i heard it i was very dissapointed. Some of the songs have bad quality. I wasnt feelin any of the music on this CD. dont get me wrong, Ron C from swishahouse chopped and screwed this album nicely, but u gotta remember, the music is from a group called Street Military, and they aint that tight. So i suggest if your gonna buy an album, stick to the swishahouse Ok.
