In an industry saturated with carbon-copy artists, commercial antics, and the daily compromise of image over music, one outfit stands to change the tide and cause the currents to flow back in the direction of originality and unabashed creativity. This outfit stands in the forefront under the moniker Funktelligence. Carrying the Alternative Hip-Hop/Soul flavor well into the new millennium, they pioneer a sound all their own by achieving a balance between live instrumentation and electronic influence, raw energy and refined musicianship, commercial appeal and the respect of the underground.

Funktelligence, or “Funktell” if you’re down, is what the Roots would call “organic hip-hop jazz.” That’s pretty close to where Funktell’s at, but there’s also the occasional dose of R&B and arena rock (if you can imagine). This Ann Arbor group’s essence, however, is already captured by the jaunty name they’ve picked to grace future marquees. Funktelligence … believe it. An amalgam of this many sounds deserves its own compound word, Webster be damned.

True funk has always been a dish best served al dente and Funktell is about as fresh as it comes, even if the ingredients aren’t always homegrown. It’s easy to hear reverberations of Guru’s Jazzmatazz, Organix-era Roots, early Spearhead and other hip-hop hybrids in the Funktell mix. That said, one can’t help but thank God that somebody’s been listening and expanding on the sincerity vibe that’s so essential to hip hop’s respectability. At last, there’s still hope for genuine positivity and instrumental ability in a genre whose pop figures continue to get away with whack production and making money by rapping about making money (bling, bling, my ass).

Featuring guitar, bass, drums, keys and an array of rappers and vocalists, Earthtones shows a complex band from many different angles. “Creepin’” jumps off with some seriously smooth rhyming by Funktell’s Jax and IX Lives that’s nearly overshadowed by Natalie White’s flavorfully crisp R&B vocals. “The Movement” showcases some of the best rhyming talent in metro Detroit, with guest vocals by Texture, Magestik Legend and OneManArmy. “Interlude” is style-bending funk with Prince-like guitars and drum ’n’ bass rhythms......Earthtones is on the level with hip hop’s finest instrumental moments.

Tasty rhythmic groove; deep and mysterious........2005-08-23

Archetype: original pattern or model; a (collective) unconscious pattern of thought. Tribe: group, family, community. Archetribe: an instrumental project that blends numerous universal world-beat/ambient elements to produce an accessible fusion of sounds & influences.

I'll admit I have no clue whether the name is meant to represent anything like that, but it's exactly what Archetribe's first album does. There's a refreshing disregard for boundaries, a beautiful ear for textures and a meticulous attention to detail (the production & engineering are superb). Imagine David Sylvian with a tribal edge. Better yet, imagine a future where all the world's tribes have become one collective that still remembers all the worldly parts of its makeup, and you've got the basic idea of Earthtones. The sound basically consists of simple exotic percussion and dreamy synth work, spiced up with breathy flute melodies and the odd tasty guitar/bass line. There are some characteristics of ambient music, but it's not just wallpaper. This disc can serve as background if you want a quiet trance to unwind to, but put on the headphones to actively listen and you'll be amazed at the wealth of sounds and colors on offer.

Everything's a tad on the short side, which has its own pros and cons - it feels like some pieces don't always get a chance to stretch out, but it also means a good amount of ground is covered in 43 minutes without anything overstaying its welcome. "The Lattice" layers chants and vocal samples into something hypnotic, while the ethereal "Conversation with the Other" makes the intangible voices ghostly and surreal. "Half Life" runs on sinuously weaving guitar lines; "Machine Messiah" and "Abyss Crossed" have shadings of electronic percussion loops in the background, subdued enough to enhance the rhythm without dominating. The disc may be mostly low-key hypnotic grooves, but the danger of repetition or boredom is nonexistent.

Earthtones comes highly recommended for Peter Gabriel fans and the like (particularly anyone who likes Passion), world-beat/dub lovers, or anyone with an ear for jungle rhythms and sweet aural textures. This one's a keeper.

An Aural Experience not to be missed!.......2002-05-19

Matthew G. Davidson brings together a group of talented artists to produce one of the best World Fusion albums to be released yet. Bringing the analog and digital together in a tapestry of intrigue and adventure, Archetibe has produced an aural imagery that allows one to travel the world through sound. Anyone who appreciates the melding of many cultures will understand how this becomes a unique sound that transcends the boarders not only in country, but indeed the imagination. Not the sum of all the pieces, but an alchemy of something much greater. This is a sound you will want others to hear and will most certainly be an experience you'll want over and over. From the introduction of "Cycle of Dust" to "Solace," this is an experience of movement, rhythm and a melody that weaves through your mind and brings your thoughts to a higher plane. This is not music to "play" or even to be used as a "background," but an aural experience of knowledge best experienced with headphones while physically relaxed in a favorite chair. Cleanse your mind of the cares and worries and experience the tantalizing sounds of Earthtones.

Highly recommended.

If you haven't experienced Matthew G. Davidson's "Blue Forest Mass," you'll definitely want to get that one as well.

Yummy!.......2001-12-30

This is a Heath Bar of a CD, smooth buttery crunchy sweet indulgence all the way through. Jamal Mohamed is a butterfly on the doumbek, and Ken Field's flute is probably what's making my three favorite tracks stand out the way they do. The synths dance respectful slithery echoes around the analog instruments, and anyone else who likes to slither will dance too. Five stars, three snakes, and a whole bunch of little twinkly green bugs!

Urban music extraordinaire, Bobbito first came to prominence hosting the "Stretch & Bobbito Breakfast Show" in 1988 (voted the `best hip-hop show ever' in The Source magazine) where he was the first to introduce the world to soon to a host of unsigned acts including Nas, Jay Z, Big Pun, Wu-Tang, and Mobb Deep. However, today the toughest question anyone can ask Bobbito Garcia is "What do you do?" There might be 10 answers depending on the day. He is an accomplished music columnist (Vibe Magazine) who has the most the most talked about book regarding sneaker culture of the year ("Where'd You Get Those?" Testify Books). He is a world class club DJ (weekly @ Apartment NYC) who also co-owns a club (the Martinez Gallery). If you thought that was enough, think twice. He is a basketball performer who has done halftime shows in NBA arenas (Dallas Mavericks), television commercials (Nike, NBA on TNT), and self produced a basketball instructional video (Bobbito's Basics to Boogie). He is a basketball announcer for playground tournaments (Nike Battlegrounds One On One) and computer games ("NBA Street 2" EA Sports). Whew - Bob sure is busy; and although he has a strong following within the hip-hop community his musical knowledge extends far beyond that to Latin, Funk, Soul and House. Earthtones is a breathtaking testament to this fact and proudly displays Bobbito's near encyclopedic knowledge of high quality music. An inspired compilation of unreleased and hard to find gems spanning the soulful music spectrum - Earthtones is unquestionably essential!

The compilation by Bobbito puts together a mix of obscure Latin, Jazz and Hip-hop. The overall texture and mood of the album is enough for any party. This is an album to impress your friends with. The variety of excellent tunes will make you seem like an aficionado(a) to all your music snob friends (just kidding). Anyway, this album merits a good review. It's an album that you can dance to, relax to or play at a party. I recommend buying it.

Thank you for considering this CD. I am the composer, Jennifer Margaret Barker. I am a Scottish composer currently living and working in the States.

The music that you will hear on this CD is classical music with a Celtic flavour. Each piece contrasts another, from Gaelic song to theatrical choral music to upbeat swing. Many of the music lovers who have purchased this CD have remarked on its accessibility and wide variety. There is something for every taste. The performers include Eilidh Mackenzie, the top Gaelic singer in Scotland; Derick Thomson, the top Gaelic poet in Scotland (reciting his own poetry in Gaelic); Heather Corbett, renowned percussionist in Europe (toured with Boulez); freelance musicians from around the States; members of the Virginia Symphony and Virginia Symphony Chorus; faculty and students from Christopher Newport University (Virginia's newest state university). The conductor is Mark U. Reimer, and the producer and recording engineer is Andreas Meyer of Sony Music Studios in New York (Meyer just won a Grammy for his work on the Sony label Louis Armstrong recording). The CD was recorded in Virginia, New York, London and Scotland.

The CD has received several rave reviews from the press and internet magazines, as well as numerous broadcasts on American Public Radio and the BBC. Its review and broadcast successes are due in part to the high level of the performances, the excellent recording and production, and the uniqueness of the compositional language.

'Nyvaigs', or in Scots Gaelic 'Naibh Beags', means 'Little Ships'. This was the name given to the little ships that the Scots used during the 13th century to outmanoeuvre the larger Viking raiders' ships, called Drakaars. The title piece on the CD depicts the Battle of Largs in Scotland where the Vikings were finally repelled from Scotland by the 'Naibh Beags'.
