This one grows on you like some Lovecraftian fungi. Some Death Metal bands strive to be the most brutal, others to be the most technically virtuosic. It seems that Autopsy preferred to be the wettest, slimiest, most expressionistic Death Metal band ever.

Ok, if you're not into sludgy Death Metal, then don't get this, stick to your Death/Grind crap, anyways, this CD is killer, theres a few "immature" lyrics on a few songs, kind of pointless lyrics on those, but the rest of the lyrics aren't bad, Killer riffs, vocals, drumming, this is Chris Reiferts band, formally of Death (Scream Bloody Gore) only, and he is good, also check out Severed Survival.

i'm not sure why the one poster gave this cd such a bad review. i suppose if the only dm you listen to is stuff like suffocation, hate eternal, origin, cryptopsy, and other super techie metal onslaughts this might not be up your alley.

but if you ask me, this is one of if not the most widely varied sounding 'death metal' albums i've ever heard. the styles range from sludgey rock, to faster bits and several areas in between, with each song having it's own identity. if you don't mind more recognizably song-oriented dm, i would strongly suggest picking this up. i think fans of darkthrone and eyehategod could like this band a lot.

and oh yeah, it is insanely catchy too.

...still a fantastic album in its own right. A classic, with genre-defining songs. The incredibly bizarre production only helps matter. Be sure to pick it up if you are a death metal fan and are new to the world of these bands, or if you've never heard this before.

Severed survival is debut album of this death metal gods and piggy man Chris Reifert.1989 was a good year for metal,and Autopsy rules that underground,stuffs like "Embalmed","Severed survival","Stillborn","Disembowel"...and others cult material is still festering. Sound is very raw,but of second album has typical dirty canal slowly noise and I like this underground crashing.It's very powerfull.
Simple death metal with hatred energy,that was a severed survival!!!

Simply the best. No others can really compare. Morbid Angel's "Altars of Madness" comes close, but fails in its later tracks. "Blessed are the Sick" is too scattered, its best riffs splintered among several songs. Death's "Scream Bloody Gore" may have been there first, but ultimately it fails to transcend Repulsion cliches. This is the great death metal ever recorded: sick, beautiful, tormented, unashamed of its own excellence. Every song is a keeper. Buy it!

Underrated, sludgy, gory old school DM (4.5 stars, 88%).......2006-12-05

Well kids here we have some pretty awesome old school death metal that's kind of derivative in a sense but still has a charm of its own since these guys were definitely the sludgiest/doomiest of the old school death metal bunch in the late 80s/early 90s and overall this is a pretty midpaced album, nothing too fast but still very heavy.

Musically this album is basically a mixture of Scream Bloody Gore and the Nihilist demos. It's pretty obvious in the riffing and vocals, in fact the description "Scream Bloody Gore part 2" is pretty appropriate as others have said. Reifert's high pitched vomiting vox are a combination of Chuck Schuldiner and LG Petrov, just listen to SBG and Nihilist/Left Hand Path and you'll see what I mean, they're pretty damn brutal too, especially for those days. There's a good amount of simple yet great solos and decent drumming, although I liked Reifert's performance on SBG better but it's ok I mean the man was singing too and I always give tons of respect to singer/drummers. That's why I love Ventor from Kreator so much. Attention bass fans, guess what you get Steve DiGiorgio on here too! Unfortunately he was only the session bassist and not a permanent member but he sounds great on this album although not quite as amazing as his other bands (Death and Sadus).

Another thing that's fun about this band is that they are indeed the most disgusting in terms of lyrics, holy s**t man. These guys must have inspired other gore bands like CC and the like, and these guys are even more heinous than them! I'd definitely agree with Strapping Young Lad on that one. I mean just look at the REAL album cover (not the one that's displayed now). Stillborn has some of the most disturbing lyrics I've ever seen and I friggin love it, I won't spoil the surprise though you'll have to buy this yourself! I'm not giving this the full 5 stars because a couple of the songs are a tad generic and a little boring especially on the first half, the second half has the best songs. Some of my faves are the title track, Embalmed, and Critical Madness.

So if old school simple DM is your thing (as you all know I LIVE for this) this is certainly mandatory. For more awesome and underrated old school DM get their other great album Mental Funeral, the first two Entombed albums (LHP is GODLY), some Dismember, Malevolent Creation, and Pestilence (Consuming Impulse is downright amazing). I made the mistake of checking this band out 3 weeks ago.
There is absolutely nothing intrigueing about this album not one solo to be found in any song, no new wave style hardcore vocals to be found, no chugachuga breakdowns, the band members don't have the cool hairdos and tight girl pants and worst of all this band isn't on MTV, TRL, Headbanger's Ball, VH1 and Uranium like the fantastic Trivium, From Autum to Ashes, Unearth, Bleeding Through, the always amazingly brutal Atreyu, and basically every OC cool "Hardcore" band because that's a cool trend not this garbage

The murder man continues to stomp in his steel toes.......2004-07-15

C-Bo comes correct with a more versatile variety of topics with his sophmore project. Mike Mosley & Sam Bostic continues to do their thang while Bo laces everybody up on "The Autopsy". Then Bo takes a little political approach on "The Murder Man" & "Amerikka's Nightmare". The next two reminds me of the first album as Bo takes on a ride with "Groovin' on a Sunday" & "Stompin in my steel toes" in which on this song and the next song "Ghetto Flight", Bo start to unlease some of his entourage like the Dual Committee(Pizzo & Mississippi). This album is an instant classic, I can remember when I first heard this back in the fall of 1994. I had to go and by the tape and I have had this in my possession ever since. Pick this up if you are a C-Bo die hard.

I am quite surprised that this album is not sold with razor blades as standard. Silencer's "Death - Pierce Me" could well be described as depression on a CD. In a good way. No, in a great way. This is Misanthropic Black Metal at its best. Upon listening to this album it will come as no surprise to you that the vocalist, Nattramn, is now in a psychiatric hospital. In fact, he even thanks 2 psychiatric hospitals and the manufacturers of several different anti-depressant drugs in the credits in the booklet. Unfortunately, Nattramn's being institutionalised means no more Silencer. The lyrics are all suitably suicidal and depressing; the band states on the first page of the booklet "We are ready to leave this place". The vocals on this album are absolutely killer. They are very twisted, tormented screams of anguish, possibly similar to those of Burzum on his first album, but better. The music on this album is also great, complimenting the depressive themes and vocals perfectly. I am most definitely not a fan of keyboards, in fact I downright loathe them 99% of the time, but the subtle, occasional use of keyboards on this album is great, and really adds to the mood. None of this incessant, twinkling, faux-ambience like a lot of other bands. The production is also great, all the levels are just right, everything is perfectly clear. "Death - Pierce Me" is incredible, full of clearly genuine emotion and passion. If I could change anything about it, I wouldn't. Check this album out if you know what is good for you, and prepare yourself for a journey into a desolate land, full of darkness and melancholy. This is probably the best collection of death metal tracks available. Autopsy weren't as 'technical' as some of the later death metal bands but they captured the intensity of the death metal experience better than anyone. The drum sound and the guitar sound is perfect for this genre, evoking stinking slabs of aural gore. Lyrically it's a bit immature in places, but this is in keeping with the b-grade horror feel of it all and an essential part of Autopsy as the complete death metal experience.
If you only ever buy one death metal CD make it this one!
There are a couple of live tracks on here too, which give some idea of what Riefert's vocals sounded like when he was drumming full-speed, see track 6, Service for a Vacant Coffin. There are also some rarities on here, such as the track 'Funereality', which was recorded in the 'Fiend for Blood' sessions but only released on the very-limited edition Peaceville sampler 'Volume 4'. Must have for all Autopsy fans. This makes my collection complete.

Autopsy's final slab in the mourge...........2002-04-18

This is not to be confused with a "Best of" or "Greatist Hits" compilation, more like should be considered as an anthology of wha best represented this cult-like Northern California Death Metal band that paved the way for modern Death Metal/Gore Grind bands. Everything about this release is great. The digipack packaging itself is worth the money, not to menton the number of songs on here. I would reccomend this to new fans of Autopsy, and then go ahead and start fiding their older material, if you're lucky enough to find it. The cover artwork itself reminds me a lot about the old Horror comic books from the 50's, 60's, and 70's such as Tales From The Crypt, Eerie...etc. The sound production itself is not that top-notch, but Chris Referit and Co. wouldn't have it anyother way. If you like this, check-out The Ravenous, and Abscess.

The Scared Stiffs is one of the best new horror-rock bands to rise from the grave in recent years, and if you're a fan of horror or horror-themed rock-n-roll, the band's debut CD AUTOPSY TURVY will knock you dead.
