I had never listened to this guy until I got this album and it is very different. Baltimore is not known for a strong hip-hop scene, but if you know anything about B-More then you might expect this to be a gangsta record. It's nowhere near that. Labtekwon switches up his flow on just about every track and is usually saying something nice with his lyrics. Darkside of the Moon is a good song with an intriguing beat. He tells some good stories on a few other tracks and is even sort of singing on some of the songs. The beats on this album are mostly just straight up hip hop but some of them are a little more spacey with some cool sounds. Labtekwon is a smart guy and it is shown throughout this album. On overlord he is posing as an ancient king and talking about what life was like for his followers. He is also a sentimental emcee talking about love on more than one track, which seems to be the requirement for today's mainstream emcees. Don't worry though they are not sappy at all. If you have never listened to Labtekwon this is a good introduction since it is a career retrospective of an artist who as released eight albums since 1993.

so you're probably looking at this little site coming from some mush records or anticon or baltimore website, wanting a little bit of info about mr lab-tek=won. not knowing the man and living far from his home base, i have little of substance to offer...BUT I can tell you that I own about 6 of his albums and SONG OF THE SOVEREIGN offers a nice profile of what has been an undeniably prolific career. if you look at genesis 6-9 closely, you can understand that noah was far from perfect, a definite flawed protagonist...but the fact(and facts) remain that the man came through and deserves to be listened to. so give lab a listen, he'll either share some serious food for thought or go rick james, tie you up, beat you down and ...it all depends on your own mental choices. listen wisely!
p.s. he gets 4 stars because some of the great material on his other albums did not make the cut...seek them out! you will not be disappointed
