Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The movie version of The Rocky Horror Show has turned into such an enduring cult success that it has pretty much obliterated the fact that it all started with a stage show. And now Richard O'Brien's musical is back on stage, where some say it truly belongs (it was nominated for the category Best Revival of a Musical in the 2001 Tony Awards). With a great cast that includes Dick Cavett, Alice Ripley (Janet), Tom Hewitt (Frank 'N' Furter), and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Magenta), the revival fires on all cylinders. Note that while Joan Jett was in the cast as Columbia, she's not on the CD (Kristen Lee Kelly is). But Lea DeLaria, last seen stealing the show in On the Town, more than compensates by playing both Eddie (Meat Loaf in the movie!) and Dr. Scott--and doing great by both. As a bonus, the song "Once in a While" is back after being cut from the movie. Bursting with energy, this recording brings the rock back in Rocky. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Good recording, bad show........2006-03-10
That said, this is a VERY good recording of what's there. Tom Hewitt does as good a job as anyone trying to fill Tim Curry's sequined heels, and brings some nice twists to the table instead of going the Curry-imitation route. Raul Esparza as Riff-Raff is electric - his rendition of "Time Warp" is unlike anything else you're likely to hear on a cast recording. He blasts it right into outer space, screaming like the world's going to end. Daphne Rubin-Vega is plenty of fun as Columbia, giving a nicely sinuous and raw-edged sexiness to the role. The orchestra gives their all to the new arrangements, and they sound crystal clear.
It's definitely the best recording of the show available, even sans Tim Curry.

Enclosure 2, all four cds, is curated as a sprawling notebook filled with sounds and speech instead of sketches and words. Of any Partch recording extant, it gives the best picture of the man--as the curmudgeonly, extremely innovative misanthrope that he was, as the composer who was impossibly unlike anyone else before or since. The essence of Partch's music reflects the history of the world--from his particular perspective--the imaginings of ancient Greece to the influence of Chinese musical melodrama, all propelled by homemade instruments based on a 43-tone scale named things like the "Kithara" and the "Boo." These recordings also give the best sense of his philosophy of language in music. Lamenting the whole time how text in music had become detached from the language of everyday life, Partch ran music alongside newsboys' cries and hobos' diaries, following the forms, cadence, and dynamics of speech, rather than the other way around. From his juvenilia (a wonderful song he wrote at 18) to a 45-minute segment of his wake in 1974, the first steps towards exploring Partch's sparkling works fully are made here. --Robin Edgerton

As created by renowned illustrator Gary Baseman, Disney's Teacher's Pet spins the wistful tale of Spot, a dog who wants to be a boy, but whose mad scientist/would-be benefactor miscalculates his dog-year math and gives the hapless hound the body of a middle-aged man instead. But as did South Park before it, the film adaptation of the Emmy honored series trumps its small-screen rival with an ambitious musical soundtrack that's not only an unexpected delight, but one whose songs and performances sometimes rival many an over-hyped, contemporary Broadway stage production in the bargain. After the bouncing teeny pop of co-star Christy Carlson Romano's title track cover dispenses with the youth marketing angle, the album settles into a collection that's split between the more traditional show sensibilities of songwriters Cheri Steinkeller, Randy Peterson and Kevin Quinn and Stephen James Taylor's more contemporary pop/swing/rock pastiche underscore. Broadway vet Nathan Lane infuses his title role with dollops of loopy sincerity and charm on the opening "I Wanna Be a Boy," the wistful ballad "A Boy Needs a Dog" and elsewhere, while Kelsey Grammer imparts his mad scientist turn "I, Ivan Krank" with a delightful, perfectly-pitched hammy bravura. Underappreciated musician/actor Jack Sheldon swings merrily through "Take the Money and Run" while Debra Jo Rupp, David Ogden Stiers, Megan Mullally, Jerry Stiller, Shaun Fleming and Paul Reubens variously make even the briefest of turns memorable on the singalong "Whole Bunch of World," the merry march "Small But Mighty" and the goofy canine affirmation of "Proud To Be a Dog." --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

The following is a reply to CowPunk©'s question:
"What I really wanna know is; who did this arrangement of the 1956 Joe Lubin tune "Teacher's Pet"? (Doris Day recorded it in 1958)
It's driving me wacky... I know it had to be one of my old '80's power pop faves now making a living in Toon Town cuz their kids are watching the same shows as mine. Which is cool- just who is it? I do love that Power Pop sound.
CowPunk©"
No, that's Christy Carlson Romano. She played Ren Stevens in "Even Stevens" and voices Kim in "Kim Possible"(both Disney Channel series).
I agree about the sound.
