As with their last hit, Elephunk, Black Eyed Peas' new disc Monkey Business is a joyful cross-genre journey with musical props to hip-hop, rock, folk, funk, and pop. The reason the Black Eyed Peas have audience appeal that crosses over many styles is because the band members are such obvious fans of diverse music. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Monkey Business's high-profile guest list. After Justin Timberlake's contribution to the massive "Where Is the Love" breakout hit from Elephunk, their inclusion of big names once again was a smart, respectful move on the part of the band as well as their guests. "My Style" is Timberlake's BEP foray number two; while the song is funky pop fun, those looking to hear Justin in the forefront are likely to be disappointed, as his vocals are mixed evenly, no sweet soulful solos this time. Other guests of note are Jack Johnson, who cowrote the bling-bashing "Gone Going," Sting on "Union" (sonically inspired by the former Police-man's "Englishman in New York"), while funk legend James Brown contributes to a scorching soul track dubbed "They Don't Want Music." The contribution of female vocalist Fergie--who joined the band partway through their last CD--has raised up considerably on the band's fourth disc, their second as a quartet. Sassily fronting her way through songs like "My Humps," the "Hey Mama"-esque "Dum Diddly" and the first single "Don't Phunk With My Heart," Fergie's melodic contributions make for a record that will likely be heard by wider audiences than ever, making this a truly accessible `hip-pop' CD. --Denise Sheppard

4 out of 5 stars Fun!.......2007-03-13

This is just a fun CD. It makes you want to dance.
We listen to this in the Operating Room and it makes the atmosphere less tense.

5 out of 5 stars NOTHING LESS THAN 5 STARS.......2007-02-13

New to this genre, I am blown away! Variety, beat, talent... I can not get to my other cds. CAN NOT agree with other unimpressed reviewers. Listen once, listen twice... Listen to that complex music and those words!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-01-31

I got this a a gift, so at first I was not sure if I wanted to keep it of sell it, as I am not really a BEP fan. In all honesty I know very little about this band, a song or two here and there. I decided to keep it and give it a try, I don't like the popular "hits" that much from this album, but was suprised at some of the really good album tracks. The players are very good on this album. There is a real sense of old school funk here that I really like.
I guess you never know what you will like till you give it a try.

To be honest, I bought this album and didn't open it for like three months. When I finally opened it and listened to it, I felt so stupid. What the hell was I thinking comes to mind! Mac Dre and Khayree laid str8 game on this album. Mac Dre spitting and Khayree producin.......what more can you ask for? My fav. cutz are.....all damn day, my chevy, gift of gab, im in motion, california livin, and youg playah. This is a cd that I can listen to all the tracks without skippin any. You have got to cop this and any other Mac Dre(RIP) cd you can get your hands on. Khayree is a musical genius

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Rapper of all Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-11-22

If you are a fan of bay area rap, you must own this CD. Mac Dre is the sickest flowwing rapper of all time and he brings it with some of the tightest lyrics. Mac Dre and Khayree create the greatest combination of rapper and producer to ever hit the shelves. If you don't own all the old Young Black Brotha cuts like Ray Luv and Dubee, then you should kill yourself.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE YOUNG BLACK BROTHA RECORDS CLASSICS.......2002-04-01

What else can I say? The album is a pure masterpiece. The combination of Mac Dre and genius producer Khayree is just tremendous. I love every single song on the album. Even though some of the best tracks on the album were recorded over the phone while Dre was in the penn, I still can't stop listening to them as well. Everyone knows Bay Area Rap will tell you that this album is a classic (as were the first albums of Ray Luv, Mac Mall, Young Lay and Dubee - the other former Young Black Brotha members). Perfect albums almost never come out these days, and that's a shame. These days, you're glad if 10 out of 15 songs are great, while on this one (and many other westcoast albums in the mid 90's) it's all perfect.

5 out of 5 stars str8 chev strikin.......2002-03-06

what can i say? they just dont make this typa stuff no more. from start to finish, this is a straight classic. this cd is like the anthem for anyone who lives like a playa. if you got any [jive] in your blood, you gonna feel this one, but if youz a hata... well, [dang] it, i dont care what you do. Man, I turn on the radio nowaday and i just wanna put a bullet in it. i generally dont listen to anything released less than 4 years ago unless its hella underground, which is the only place your gonna find any quality raps these days.

4 out of 5 stars Consistently interesting.......2007-02-23

Poor Righteous Teachers' third album was 1993's "Black Business." This was my introduction to the group and it was an album I was very impressed with. The Trenton trio of Culture Freedom, Father Shaheed, and Wise Intelligent are far from the conventional hip hop trio though. I remember buying this album and being pleasantly surprised by the content; I think I was expecting some kind of A Tribe Called Quest product and finding something completely different. Consumers should know that PRT is not for everyone and it may be an acquired taste for many. The music on "Black Business" doesn't sound so much like hip hop as it does island music. The rappers' deliveries and funky, horn heavy ragga beats are much more characteristic of dancehall reggae. Father Shaheed, the producer, puts together an impressive musical backdrop of funky basslines, horn instrumentation, and assorted instrumentation that match the MCs lyricism very well. Many a track will have your head bobbing with the funk. The music is also effective in that it often helps create a feeling of unrest and chaos that the lyrics contribute to. Culture Freedom and Wise Intelligent sing like Jamaican reggae artists, but their five percent wisdom is what sets them apart. They rap about issues facing the black community but maintain a spiritual aspect, as well as being able to kick back for some more fun tracks. This album is definitely a very focused effort, and in all its consistency no tracks really stand out. "Black Business" is consistent and often quite entertaining, and is an album I highly recommend for the open-minded listener.

The album starts with "144k," a catchy and instantly likable exercise in funky bass and reggae toasting from Culture Freedom and Wise Intelligent. "Da Rill S..." follows similarly, another entertaining and fun song. The more threatening "Nobody Move" is the first which really brings the social relevance into play. "Mi Fresh" is one of my favorites, the music is really effective and the verses are all excellent. "Here We Go Again" is extremely conscious, speaking out against violence, sexism, and it has a great beat as well, utilizing some classic Public Enemy material in the hook. After the nice "Selah" comes the title track, a fun yet as always intelligent song, a sure highlight. "Get Off the Crack" is great lyrically, challenging the ways of the mainstream. The good "None Can Test" precedes "Ghetto We Love," which profiles the housing projects they grew up in and their appeal amidst the struggles they provide. "Rich Mon Time" shows the spiritual element of the group, very reggae-influenced, and the excellent "Lick Shots" closes the album.

"Black Business" is still the only PRT album I've been able to find in any stores, and it's certainly one I would recommend to fans of different styles of music. PRT was a visionary group that creatively fused two distinct genres for a product that was relevant, intelligent, and entertaining. Like all the PRT albums, it's nearly impossible to find today, a true shame really, but should you cross it definitely pick it up. Musically and lyrically, "Black Business" is a great product.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest albums of any genre.......2004-05-17

If you're into socially-conscious rap this is it at its best..yes everyone thinks of Public enemy when it comes to this type of rap deservedly so, but PRT might have the most important albums of that time. And this was their masterpiece IMO. Who would've thought this Trenton,NJ Trio from the Donelly Homes Housing Project in North Trenton could've possibly dropped 3 of the most underrated albums in rap history. On Black Business it all came together the production done mainly by Father Shaheed was the best out of the previous 2 and lyrically and conceptually they were at their best with Wise Intelligent truly one of the most underrated MC's of all times he is brilliant lyrically and a master of many styles and Culture Freedom adding his element to the group as well. All the songs are good, but here are some standout tracks 144K,Nobody Move,Ghetto we love,Mi fresh,Black business, get off the crack..etc I'd advise anyone who wants classic concious rap these guys are leaders of that pack...pick up any other their albums you won't be dissappointed believe me. NOT BAD FOR SOME GUYS FROM MY HOMETOWN.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome as usual.......2006-05-07

I would say that this album is flawless except for the cheesy background vocals on one of the songs. Probably my favorite Napalm Death CD and I have studied them all very intently.

4 out of 5 stars My favorite Napalm Death Album.......2005-06-21

I never liked this band until this album was released. I actually started listening to them because I thought the singer was funny, and had an unearthly voice. It was hard to believe a human could make these kind of noises (which is probably done with processors and FX). Anyway, since listening to this album, I found myself liking a lot of their other stuff, although, this album still remains one of their best.

5 out of 5 stars Their best.......2004-12-08

This is definitley Napalm Death's best. The blast beats are amazing and the music is brutal as hell. These are are probably the best grindcore band along with Exhumed and Dying Fetus. Best track is the first one.

5 out of 5 stars Brutal... even for Napalm Death.......2004-08-24

This is one of the most appropriately titled albums to come out in recent years. Enemy is such a good cd it instantly makes throngs of others obsolete. This is truly a high-point for Napalm Death in every way. This disc has everything a Napalm fan wants and so much more. The songs are crafted with surgical precision and performed with passion beyond anything the 20+ year old gringdcore outfit has put to disc thus far.

Napalm Death have always owned the corner on crushing guitars, guttural bass, and blinding drums, but those all go to a higher plain on this cd. The biggest highlight of this collection for me has to be Barney's vocals. They are so much more intense than previous efforts. It's really an all-around pleasure to listen to. Get it...

5 out of 5 stars FAST AND HEAVY, the way I love it.......2004-06-11

This is arguably my favorite Napalm Death so far, although I only got four of their albums, so I'm really looking forward to get some more. This album really kicks some serious ass, and will please any fan of death metal, grindcore, and even thrash metal fans like myself. Every song on here just kicks your ass so hard, it just sends you in a wiplash. Barney Greenway gives out one of his best vocal performances on here, just listen to him on the opening track Taste The Poison, talk about insane. Jesse Pintado and Mitch Harris's twin guitar riffs just rips right through your body like a chainsaw. Bassist Shane Embury adds a different sound to his bass which is a very good thing. Danny Herrera's heart pounding double bass drum blasts just hit you like a ton of bricks, man he is just sick. Great album, a must have for all Napalm Death fans. ND 4ever.

Yeah, this is the sh#t. That bay area sh#t. Heavy tracks with deep bass by khayree, and tight rapping from mac mall. This was one of the tight, tight albums of 93'. Start to finish, its cool all the way through. I will never let this go missing or get fu#@ed up. If you like bay area or rap altogether, then you need to know about this and have it if you don't already. Later!

I was amazed after I had listened this album. This is one of the best ever, and the beats are definitely the best. Underground super-producer Khayree gave those unbelievable beats, where Mac Mall could deliver his gangsta mack rhymes. All the tracks are off the hook, the whole album is Bay Area style at it's best. The 5 stars aren't enuff for this.

THE SPECIAL THING ABOUT THIS IMPORT VERSION IS IT COME'S WITH A DVD.IT HAS FIVE HIT VIDEO'S FROM THIS CD AND THE PICTURE QUALITY IS GREAT.BUT THERE IS ONLY ONE PROBLEM THE SOUND ON THE DVD IS HORRIBLE FOR SOMETHING THAT CAME OUT IN 2005.
FOR EXAMPLE WHEN I PLAY THE BONE~THUGS~HARMONEY DVD I PUT THE SOUND ON THE STEREO ON 15.TO GET THE SAME SOUND OUT OF THIS DVD YOU HAVE TO PUT THE VOLUME ON 25.WHY THAT IS I DO NOT KNOW BUT IF YOU ARE GOING TO GET THIS CD BUY THIS CD/DVD VERSION INSTEAD OF JUST THE PLANE CD. PLUS IF YOU WATCH THE DVD JUST OUT OF YOUR T.V. SPEAKERS YOU WILL NOT EVEN CARE ABOUT HOW LOUD THE BASS IS.{TONY~TONI~TON`E}/[ROME,NEW YORK]
