Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A lot of fun.......2007-05-15

Songs from an almost-forgotten era of music. Lots of songs, better sound quality than I expected, and surprisingly "modern" lyrics. I'm really enjoying this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Neither as bad nor as good as it could be.......2006-12-27

Novelty songs are like fireworks, bright and nearly omnipresent for a moment, seemingly quite substantial, but quickly vanishing into an acrid vapor and dust. These 20 renditions of vaguely sexual material vary widely in quality and style, but something they share is that not one is a performance of a lasting song. A few are worthy of the repeated listen, but way, way too many wear out their welcome after one go-round. Double entendre is of limited interest to me, and so is the coy and roundabout sexual reference. Yeah yeah, I get the joke, I know what you're referring to when you say that, I just am not all that amused. Oh my, aren't you naughty!

I love the music of this era, and have many CDs that provide me with much pleasure. Helen Kane, Ruth Etting, Annette Hanshaw were excellent singers who, when provided with significant material, produced 78s that will last beyond whatever format of music reproduction comes next. But this is mostly negligible stuff, performed by minor talents. I like Sophie's song a lot, which is sung with gusto and panache. She could work a song, and on this, she does. And Gertrude Lawrence provides a momentary smile. Other well-done or clever bits appear here and there. However, like mediocre sketch comedy, most of this just goes on too long with nothing but the inherently pleasing aspect of its naughtiness sustain it. And that just ain't enough.

Oh, and the notes, while lengthy, are simultaneously ingratiatingly smug and content-free. Living Era has a number of delightful CDs on my shelves, but this one will get few spins. Should have trusted my gut instincts that were pained by that wretched pun of a title.

5 out of 5 stars What a hoot !!!.......2006-11-26

Listen To The Banned: 20 Risqué Songs Of The 20s and 30s offers quite a collection of shameless tunes from the 1920s and the 1930s. These songs were banned from being broadcast by the BBC; however in retrospect they are actually rather humorous. The playful and romantic nature of these songs also makes them timeless not simply because they are funny and amusing but also because romance and $exuality are universal human experiences.

The CD boasts many songs with great musical arrangements and strong performances. I especially like Sophie Tucker singing "He Hadn't Up Till Yesterday;" Cliff Edwards' "I'm A Bear In A Lady's Boudoir" and "I'm Going To Give It To Mary With Love" as well as Ross and Sargent performing "Nellie, The Nudi$t Queen." Excellent!

There are more daring songs on this CD that would rattle some people even today. The Durium Dance Band performs "Let's All Be Fairie$;" "I've Gone And Lost My Yo-Yo" by Billy Cotton and his band and Randolph Sutton chuckles all the way through "Or Anything Else I've Got!"

The sound reproduction from the 78s is rather good although of course there is some surface noise. Brian Rust contributes an essay in the liner notes about censorship in the 1920s and the 1930s. The cover art work design is by Phil Duffy at P. D. Graphics Ltd.

I enjoyed every minute of this CD! I recommend it for anyone who likes nostalgic pop vocals from the 1920s and the 1930s. These are not just silly songs by unknowns; in fact you will be especially pleased as Sophie Tucker, Gertrude Lawrence, Mae West and Cliff Edwards are all represented here. Get this CD and have fun listening over and over again!

5 out of 5 stars Superb Stuff.......2006-06-23

I have this on vinyl, where it is called "Listen to the Banned", and it is a superb collection of risque songs that are genuinely funny. I especially like the two Ukelele Ike Edwards tunes ("I'm a Bear in a Lady's Budoir" is great) and George Formby is very funny with his "Little Ukelele in His Hand", done before he cleaned himself up and got merely cute. There are two cuts that go beyond funny into the realm of the sublime. "I've Gone and Lost My Little Yo-Yo" by Billy Cotton and His Band is funny, coarse and sophisticated all at the same time. However, the really incredible, and fabulously politically incorrect highlight of the set is "Let's All Be Fairies" by the Durium Dance Band. People of all sexual proclivities will find it beyond hilarious. This is a wonderful collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2005-01-16

If you like comedy, sex and jazz (and who doesn't?) this is a must-have album.

Gertrude Lawrence's rendition of "The Physician" is worth the cost of the disc, but "Nellie tne Nudist Queen" is also brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars banned in d.c. bad brains greatest riffs.......2007-05-14

one of the greatest comps ever everyone should own this

5 out of 5 stars Someone finally does something right........2007-04-08

This collection is exactly what it promises on the front sticker: a "Definitive" collection.

It shows you every side of the Brains, from their blistering hardcore awesomeness to their forays into grotesque sounding metal (not that the metal songs are of low quality, but man is that some ugly, evil riffing on "Voyage To Infinity" and "Soul Craft"), and, of course, some Reggae songs at the end.

Thats what makes this disc so great, you see every side of the Bad Brains.

If you've never heard the Bad Brains before, they're one of the best, if not THE best, hardcore band of all time. Nobody sounded like these rastafarian dudes. Dr. Know was an amazing guitarist (he started out playing jazz fusion), playing tight, furious riffs and ripping out solos like no ones business, HR had a very unique voice with unbelieveable range, at times he sounds very operatic and soulful and then one second later can be screaming like some crazy evil dwarf baby. Earl Hudson (HR's brother) plays drums at light speed, all the while refusing to play those simple "boom-chick, boom-chick" kind of drumlines like most other hardcore drummers. Finally, Darryl Jenifer played bass very well (check out the solo he performs on the live cut of "Big Takeover" on this disc!) and, along with Hudson, kept the band locked in tight at whatever speed they played at.

And they could turn it on and off at the drop of a hat, too. They had lots of tempo shifts and stops in their songs, something that keeps the hardcore numbers from getting too repetitious (something plenty of other hardcore bands suffer from).

So with this disc, you get over an hour's worth of their best songs, every track lovingly re-mastered to sound as good as possible. I'm also very happy that they did vinyl transfers for the "Rock For Light" tracks too, as the CD issue of that album was artificially sped up for some mysterious reason. So you get to hear songs like "Sailin' On" and "At The Movies" at the speeds they were meant to be heard at, something fans who don't own the vinyl edition of that album(i.e. me) will be glad to have.

The bottom line is: The Bad Brains were a truly original force in music, and this disc is an excellent representation of who they were and what they did. It's easily the best single disc purchase of these guys, though after hearing their stuff, you'll probably want to buy more.

4 out of 5 stars A great collection of Bad Brains material.......2005-11-17

This collection spans the best of the career of these DC/NYC reggae/hardcore musicans. Later stuff is OK....but Bad Brains aren't the same without HR's "throat".

If you have never heard the band before this makes a good primer, to get you into them (and they are counted as influences by lots of bands: Beastie Boys to Living Colour & No Doubt (the last two have covered Bad Brains songs both live and in the studio). So if you like what you hear on this disc....make the purchases to get yourself the rest of their library (especially the early stuff) !

My only complaint with this compilation would be that I prefer the SST label recordings versions of the "I Against I" era material. I am sure not having them on here is more a result of label infighting, so at least recordings from that era are still here for inclusion.

Other than that.....great, great stuff !!!

5 out of 5 stars best hardcore band EVER.......2004-06-28

No hardcore band beats the bad brains. They play so damn fast you cant understand them...its great! These guys don't jsut play hardcore either, on this album theres metal and theres reggae. Theres no reason why not to buy it if you like punk (none of that pop-punk crap.)

4 out of 5 stars enhanced?????????.......2004-06-05

i bought this album for the supposed enhancement,as i already knew bad brains are legendary.but the tracks sound the same as they do on the albums they took them off???.caroline have always been a rip off!!

2 out of 5 stars About ten minutes of solid Sam........2007-06-11

Sam Kinison is one of the best and most creative comedians I have ever heard, but this CD is an enormous disappointment.

The first track is a meandering 33-minute set that is only occasionally funny. It could have been edited down to ten great minutes.

All of the other tracks consist of Sam and a band performing covers of various hard rock classics. They're not bad, but I did not buy a Sam Kinison CD for music.

3 out of 5 stars just has not held up........2007-01-10

I adore Mr. Kinison but this album just has not held up. There are some very funny things on it, but overall it seems like an old dinosaur, just out of sinc with today's morals.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THAT SAM.......2006-07-13

4 out of 5 stars Leader of the Banned.......2005-07-07

Classic Sam Kinison, with quick wit and a sharp toungue tempered by his trademark laugh Sam Kinison's over the top style is timeless, and still relevant in the new millenium.

5 out of 5 stars This Bill Hicks Fan Loves Kinison!.......2005-04-24

While I agree with the previous reviewer's assertion that Bill Hicks is unmatched as a social commentator and political comic, Sam Kinison really shouldn't be dismissed as a mere explosive, reactionary xenophobe, especially since Sam Kinison helped launch Bill Hicks' career. Both of them are wonderfully unique and equally brilliant comics in their own ways.

The thing about Sam Kinison is that he says what most Americans are too scared or too brainwashed to say, and he does it with unmatched stage presence and charisma. I feel excited just listening to this guy. He has a way with making massive crowds become just as amped up as they would be at a rock concert. Maybe the title of "Rock & Roll Comic" really does belong to Kinison, and that's definitely not an understatement.

In regard to this particular recording, I'd urge anybody with a sense of humor to check it out. I'm a Bill Hicks fan and I loved it. Give it a try. If you really have the kind of repressed angst that Kinison helps cleanse his listeners of, you'll appreciate every moment of it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Multiple-personality opera.......2007-01-20

If you've never experienced the music of P.D.Q. Bach, the album THE INTIMATE P.D.Q. BACH is a great place to start. Professor Peter Schickele (of the University of Southern North Dakota, at Hoople) is a master of the comic lyric. His verse is easily as complex and witty as Tom Lehrer's best. Additionally, Schickele is so deeply steeped in the classical genre he can facilely twist, combine and parody music from any era, and with remarkable results.

"Bargain-counter" tenor John Ferrante had a voice and talent like no other. The initial success of Schickele's efforts are due in large part to Ferrante's unique vocal contributions.

"Hansel And Gretel And Ted And Alice" is a superlative work-- a one act comic opera with seven characters, performed by Ferrante and Schickele, along with a solo piano. The play is by turns jolly, convoluted, silly, "shocking," but always melodious. In the opera's finale, the two performers are required to sing FOUR parts almost simultaneously, a feat complicated by Schickele's deftly donning and removing a wolf's head to play his two characters. Visually, this piece was an hysterical sight.

What can be said about the "O.K. Chorale"? The calliope-four-hands has never sounded as sweet.

The intro to the "Erotica Variations" is nearly as hilarious as the music itself. That the instruments involved were "banned" is a gift to us all!

"The Art Of The Ground Round" is the one selection from this album that everyone seems to remember. This is due in large part to punnish and impudent lyrics-- and our natural love of Row, Row, Row your boat-type group sings.

THE INTIMATE P.D.Q. BACH is highly recommended for all classical music lovers, fans of madcap comedy, and anyone who happens to live in Hoople, North Dakota.

TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 50:14

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars not enough!.......2005-08-11

My brother brought this home from college 25+ years ago. I know most of the songs by heart, especially the Ground Round. No matter how many times I hear it I find myself laughing and groaning along with the audience. The studio albums, while good, just don't have the zing of the live ones.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2005-07-09

Peter Shickele has made a career out of lampooning classical music. On numerous albums, he has "performed" the works of P.D.Q. Bach, the mythical lost son of J.S. Bach. What all of his pieces have in common is that they take a perfectly good piece of classical music and make a complete mockery out of it, usually with hilarious results. This album is no exception

"Hansel and Gretel and Ted and Alice" is billed as an opera in one unnatural act. It is silly and irreverent. It is also fun.

"The O.K. Chorale" is a lampoon of "The Sheep May Safely Graze" with "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" and others thrown in for comic effect. It is played on "calliope".

"Erotica Variations" is lifted from Beethoven's "Heroica". It features some rather obscure instruments that, hopefully, will not have anything else written for them.

"The Art of the Ground Round" is one of my all time favorites. It is a series of rounds or canons. As the voices start to overlap, a completely new set of lyrics appears.

These "compositions" may offend serious music lovers. For any one with a sense of humor about pretentious music it is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Ferrante's fruity-tooty duty is his dooby dooby doo.......2004-11-16

The GROUND ROUND tunes are obviously the stand-out items. But I regret that they were done with minimalist arrangements. These mini-masterpieces should've been done with lavish orchestrations. And without a live audience. (Schickele didn't have the common sense to eschew live audiences until MISSA HILARIOUS.)

GROUND ROUND's 3 tenors are John Ferrante, John Nelson, & The Schick. And every time I hear it, I come to it with an automatic prejudice that favors Ferrante's singing. But then I get subjected to John Nelson's luscious voice and it causes me to reconsider my favoritism. (Schickele's voice is 2000 light-years from contention.)

5 out of 5 stars A must have for PDQ Bach fans.......2000-03-01

This is definately my favorite of all the PDQ Bach recordings. A classic (pardon the pun) that will have even those of you who are not particularly fond of classical music, wanting more. The "Art of the Ground Round" is brilliant as well as the opereta "Hansel and Gretal and Ted and Alice"

With 10 recordings as a leader behind him, saxophonist Greg Osby shows both musical grace and cool confidence on Banned in New York. Working acoustically in front of a small live audience, Osby and his group stretch out and explore four old classics and one new, original composition. Accompanied by pianist Jason Moran, bassist Atsushi Osada, and drummer Rodney Green, Osby plays alto and soprano saxophone in a bold, omnivorous style. On an ambitious interpretation of Charlie Parker's "Big Foot," Osby's darting alto reaches back to bebop as well as flirts with his own R&B roots. The band also does excellent work with Duke Ellington's "I Didn't Know About You" and Sonny Rollins's "Pent-Up House" before closing with a quick take on Thelonious Monk's "52nd Street Theme." --Mitch Myers

4 out of 5 stars Direct from the club to you.......2002-08-07

There's a certain amount of affectation in the packaging here. The CD is deliberately packaged crudely (minimal information, grainy black & white graphics, scrawled lettering) & titled as if it were a bootleg. Fair enough: consumers are warned that sound quality is acceptable but far from audiophile. The drums are rather crackly & Jason Moran's piano is very distant. The CD is the result of a deliberately lopsided & abrupt soldering together of two continuous extracts from different sets: a nearly hour-long medleyed sequence of four tunes (Osby's own "13th Floor", & the standards "Pent up House", "I Didn't Know about You" & "Big Foot"), followed by a fade-up midway through another version of "Big Foot" & a quick setclosing reading of "52nd St Theme".

The readings of the bop themes are in some ways the most ambitious & far-ranging things here, in which the musicians only touch base with the themes & chords at their discretion. In general, as is typical for Osby albums, the leader claims the vast majority of the solo space, & so things are a bit lopsided, but there's no denying his fertility of invention. "Big Foot" is I think the best track, which gets into Dolphyish territory in its combination of bluesy bent tones & far-out harmonic thinking. It's extremely impressive. Oddly enough on the 2nd, truncated version of "Big Foot", Osby sounds very close to Anthony Braxton--not a musical influence I'd have usually suspected. -- Moran is to my taste not in his most interesting form, though I find it hard to make out what he's doing sometimes--he is very fond of repetitively seesawing over the same notes. He's perhaps most effective on the Ellington ballad (where one can also best make him out).

A very good album, though I think the sound quality remains something of a caveat. It's an album that has something of a hardboiled vibe to it I'm not sure I quite like, but it's nonetheless very accomplished music.

    5 out of 5 stars A great performance.......1999-05-26

This is one of Osby's best recordings. It has power, variation, directnes, feeling, good communication, in short, almost everything which qualifies for a great performance. Osby seems to be more comfortable live than in a studio atmosphere. Unfortunately, the date (year) of recording is not given.

5 out of 5 stars Live Jazz at it's best!.......1999-03-26

If you love live jazz, uncut, raw,( not watered down)this C.D. is for you.Mr Osby comes out roaring and doesn't stop until the disc ends. This C.D. represents what I love about jazz. The freedom to play music from your heart and soul and evoke feelings in the listener that gives you chills!ART FOR YOUR EARS.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

If you are into "dirty rap" this is a great album for you. They don't sit ther and rap about killing or getting high or so on. these guys like to rap about everything around sex. you think it's kinky or dirty these guys are rapping about doing. i highly reccomend this album to anyone that is not offended by foul language or human anatomy.
