About the Artist
“I don’t want to fool myself by saying a song can change the world, although it would be nice. It definitely won’t change what happened. Maybe we can ease the pain by way of inspiration. I’m not a firefighter, a policeman, or a doctor. I only make songs. But, on September 11th, I wished I were. The bravery and dedication of the men and women who tried to rock our country to sleep that night is truly benevolent. I hope they hear our song and embrace America’s Cry. It sums up a collage of emotions I’m experiencing. Of course, no one needs more violence, and I don’t want anyone to think I am in anyway crying for war and destruction. As a God fearing man I know that’s not the way. But at the same time, I can’t help feeling motivated to never be hurt again. The idea that someone a million miles away could make me cry without even knowing my name... never again.”

    Album Description

UK pressing of the third CD single pulled from her album The Dutchess. 'Big Girls Don't Cry' is a touching song with Fergie sharing a side of herself we rarely see. The lyrics are heartfelt, speaking of wanting time alone to face up to her responsibilities. Led by an acoustic guitar and laced with strings, complimenting Fergie's versatile voice, the track was produced by the multi-talented Will.I.Am (Black Eyed Peas) and was written by Fergie and Toby Gad. Features 'Big Girls Don't Cry (Personal)' plus 'Pedestal'. Polydor.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

    5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

    5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

We all know that Ice Cube, founding member of NWA and former "hardcore gangster rapper," performs in family-friendly fluff comedy flicks aimed at the most mainstream of family audiences, but no one with any sense cuts him serious flack for that. Not only are the Friday and Barber Shop movies pretty great, but do you have any idea how big his bank account is by now? When it comes to music, what is the dude to do? It's obviously his first love, but he has about three choices: to work with the Neptunes and try to update himself; to go completely middle America and do a Broadway revue or something; or he can do what he's always done: flex his lyrical muscles, squint a lot, bark out some hardcore lines on top of slick hip-hop--you know, to try and restore his cred. A glance at the song titles will tell you which choice he made. It's interesting to know that the very rich still have problems ("Child Support") and even millionaires have to convince us all that they're tough just like they did when they were broke-ass ("Why We Thugs"). There's some real political commentary here, but it gets lost in uninspired beats and that super-dated style, genre... everything. It would seem that Cube's producers forgot to tell him that no one really cares for that '92 stuff anymore. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Ice Cube Still Has It!.......2007-06-20

Years have past, and Ice Cube has released many albums, but last year's release 'Laugh Now Cry Later' is proof that he still has it. The delivery, lyrics, and beats on here are all very great, and the production on here is excellent as well.

Released independently on Ice Cube's own Lench Mob Records (which will also be home to WC's next album, 'Guilty by Affiliation'), 'Laugh Now Cry Later' has many stand-out tracks. 'Child Support' addresses all they young rappers ruining the industry that legends like Cube put down, 'Laugh Now, Cry Later' has interesting lyrics and a nice beat, 'Stop Snitchin' is self explanatory and is an angry and excellent track. The first single, 'Go to Church (feat. Snoop Dogg & Lil Jon)' is among the best on this album, and is an extremely addictive track the first few times you hear it. The rest of the album is also quality, except for...

'Doin' What It 'Pose 2Do' is a very boring and forgettable track, and You Gotta Lotta That (featuring Snoop Dogg)' has a typical Lil Jon beat and sounds like filler. Otherwise, this album is superb, and one of the best Ice Cube has put out yet. He's still on top of his game, it's just unfortunate that his next album (titled 'Last Roll of the Dice').will be his last (at least he won't be releasing albums past his prime like Too $hort).

Stand-out tracks: 'Go To Church (featuring Snoop Dogg & Lil Jon)', 'Child Support', 'Chrome & Paint (featuring WC)'.

4 out of 5 stars 7th solo from the Don Mega maybe his best - 4.5 stars.......2007-03-20

Ice Cube is finally back with another solo after a little over 6 years, and I have to say it's probably my favorite of his solo's ( I don't have "Amerikkaz Nightmare" or "War & Peace Vol. 1"). After being in the rap game for almost 20 years, he still brings heat on the mic and still has a lot to say, not as political as his first 4 albums fromt eh early 90's, but I like this more. With 16 songs, 6 are ok, and 10 are good, with the majority being real good, but no classic song however. Guests are minimal (unlike his last 2 albums) and I think it really helps (since the 3 guests are all vets as well and are only on 4 songs. Production is very good as well. Lil Jon does 3 songs, Scott Storch, Budda, Teak teak & dee, Emile, Laylaw & D Maq all do 2 songs, Green lantern, Swizz Beats, Sean C & LV all do 1 song. A must have album and one of the better albums of 2006.

    i love this cd.

i bought the promo version of it on cd too.

    4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good.....Then Again...It Shouldn't Be A Surprise.......2007-02-09

Being that I've been a Cube fan and an NWA fan since I first head "Dopeman" back in the day, I've pretty much bought or supported everything Cube has done..the dope and the not so dope stuff.

I had flip flopped on buying the CD until one of the youngins I worked with let me take it home for the weekend. I must say I was extremely impressed. It had it's valleys with some songs as well, but for the most part, it was a good comeback for CUBE.

I haven't heard ICECUBE flow this good since WAR & PEACE pt. 1 and the single he did with Dre & Ren for the second Friday soundtrack called "Hello". Everybody knows the line well.... "Hello, I started this gangsta sh@#$$%t, and this the MF-in thanks I get". That line is so synonymous with just how much Cube has given to the game of rap, and to the West Coast period.

"Child Support" no doubt is vintage old skool Cube but basically letting the youngsters out there know that they are eating good, and being taken care by the rap game they way they are these days because he is still at the very least, the Godfather of West Coast Gangsta Rap, along with NWA, Eazy,Too-Short, DJ Quik, MC Eight. However, what sets CUBE apart from all the other West Coast rappers was that after Amerikkka's Most Wanted, he had East Coast bamas sweating him and wearing Khaki's and black hats as well. Some partly because the "Bomb Squad" (who produced Public Enemy records) produced that album and it gave it East Coast legitimacy, and the most part is that at the time, you couldn't find another rapper that rapped with such anger, fire and passion. He basically was expressing what young black men in the hood was feeling on the East and West, North and South coast. While we had P.E. and X-Clan and Paris, KRS-ONE, Rakim, dropping knowledge about the political, ICE CUBE was dropping the anger and the knowledge felt by young black men regarding feelings towards the police brutality, why liquor stores and gun shops were on every black corner, why korean and asian stores were on ever corner of the hood, and the gang bangin that those fellow East Coast artists weren't addressing. Ice-T introduced other coasts in America to bangin and police brutality with "COLORS". ICECUBE & NWA brought us right into the West Coast hood itself, and forced us to see up close and personal with "Straight Outta Compton & F-The Police. Every black male growing up with me felt the same about the Police, but no other group had the guzubas to put it on wax though. Growing up in New York and later moving to D.C., I must say it was a bitter pill to swallow. ICECUBE became our West Coast News Anchor without the FCC sugarcoating it or censoring anything. And of course was the first one (along with PAC on 1991 2PACOLYPSE NOW "Violent" who ironically would be brutalized severely by Oakland Police that same year) who predicted, and rapped about the brutality from the police that L.A. would riot and sure enough 1 year later we had the L.A. riots of 1992.

Of course like most artists, after they've aged 20+ years, have kids of their own, made tons of loot, they may not be as angry as they were when they were 18 years of age, but I'm sure CUBE still faces his own problems not only in the music industry which is shady enough, but the film industry which is basically the mob disguised as glitz and glamour. I'm sure it wasn't easy for him to get his own and keep it. I still read articles from haters even after twenty years, with CUBE doing positive things always bring up "Black Korea" from the Death Certificate album which I love just as equally as Amerikkka's Most Wanted.

Decent album overall from one of the original O.G.'s in the game. If you look, just how many rappers are left in this game who's put in almost 20 years in the game? LL, DR DRE, CUBE, MR SCARFACE & GETO BOYS, TOO-SHORT and can still sell records. Says a lot about the artist and his staying power.

    2 out of 5 stars Cube's gettin soft .......2007-01-21

this CD was not what I was expecting, it did'nt seem like Cube at all maybe it's all the money that has made this guy so soft now. I guess the CD is okay at best though.

Marah play things loose and easy on their self-produced fifth album, fusing folk-rock sincerity and garage-band recklessness with first-take immediacy. Since moving from Philadelphia to Brooklyn, they've put some musical distance between themselves and those frequent comparisons with a lower-rent (or at least younger and hungrier) Bruce Springsteen, though the harmonica that laces "Walt Whitman Bridge" conjures some familiar echoes. "City of Dreams" finds them channeling their inner Simon and Garfunkel, while the opening "The Closer" (go figure) sounds like Graham Parker fronting a neo-skiffle band. With "Out of Tune," songwriting brothers Dave and Serge Bielanko issue what amounts to a musical credo: "So what if we're out of tune with the rest of the world?" The go-for-the-throat vitality of the tracks makes the If You Didn't Laugh You'd Cry sound less produced than unleashed. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Great American Rock and Roll.......2006-11-07

I agree with the person a few reviews down. This is great American Rock and Roll. This is not the next Springsteen/E Street Band record, but it is Springsteen, The Stones, Stax, Philly Soul, The Replacements, Country and Western, Folk, and so many great musical elements mixed together, and spewed out with great results. The music has heart, the lyrics are human - they are real. The band should be an American institution. Their past few albums have been the best American music I have heard in a while. Can't wait for the live cd/dvd!

4 out of 5 stars More Marah than any other record.......2006-09-20

More than any other recording, this is the best representation to date of this band. Their live shows are what have drawn me in. Slick production from other sessions had me wavering. This record keeps me believing. Great job Serge and Dave.

    1 out of 5 stars MEDIOCRE.......2006-08-26

I think I like the actual guys in the band better than their music, and I dont' know them!! I had hopes, but I have a feeling this is just a tired effort that's over produced.

I sure have turned into a negative nancy on these blind buys from amazon!

    5 out of 5 stars I'm a big Marah fan now.......2006-06-30

My first exposure to Marah was Float Away, but I didn't like it and it kept me away from the band for several years. Finally I purchased 20,000 Streets and it was a much better listening experience, but I wasn't quite sold yet.

I recently bought If You Didn't Laugh and it just blows me away! It's obvious now that Marah is capable of making great music and each release is a little different from the one that preceeded it.

Listening to this CD prompted me to run out and purchase Kids In Philly...another keeper.

5 out of 5 stars best rock band in america/ the world!.......2006-02-25

If you're interested in rock n roll at all, you need to buy this record; by rock n roll I mean: the Rolling Stones; Townes Van Zandt; The Replacements; The Jam; and etc. Seriously. These guys write the most literate lyrics and put it over the most awesome, accessible rock n' roll that's been created in decades. If you don't love them, you don't have a pulse. That's it. Christ. Buy this album. Buy 30 copies for everyone in your family. Bury copies with your dead relatives. They'll thank you in the afterlife.

I am impressed with the quality of the Gramercy Brass Ensemble's performance of these traditional American Patriot pieces.

Beautiful sound, outstanding musicianship, classic yet spirited arrangements, and wide variety from national anthems to branch-specific armed forces hymns.

I would recommend this recording to anyone looking to hear American Patriotic music at its best. A very nice CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Patriotic CD.......2004-02-21

This is a great CD if you ever need or want to have patriotic music. American music played by an American brass band. This group sounds terrific. For those of you unfamiliar with brass band, it is comprised of 25 brass players and 2 or 3 percussionists. You get a rich, full sonority and these guys play GREAT! This CD is HIGHLY recommended to all bras players who want to hear tone quality, timbre, intonation, and more. Band directors would be wise to use this as a model for their students for everything from pitch to phrasing. Everybody else would be wise to pick it up if you like Americana. I know people who use this for their commute because it is upbeat and uplifting. Excellent CD!!!! You may also want to check out their second CD entitled "Christmas Time Is Here". Also highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A very good CD to buy.......2005-07-06

I have bought many CD regarding American patriotic songs but it is the one that I prefer. The songs are sung in a very classic way and so, there are easy to listen. Jon English as a tenor gives an excellent performance. On the piano, Rob Carriker gives also an excellent performance; he does not try to cover the voice of Jon English but just to support his voice. So, Jon English and Rob Carriker form a very fine duo and the quality of recording is excellent. The choice of songs is also excellent. I strongly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars What an Excellent Work of Art!.......2002-08-30

John English has a booming and resounding voice. Well suited for the rough and tough songs of our countries historic wars. It is an excellent buy, and I recommend it to any fans of great songs and American historics!

    5 out of 5 stars What A Blast - A Fun and Inspiring CD.......2002-07-30

I have to admit - I didn't know what I'd be getting when I bought this album. I love Americana and have known some of these songs all my life: K-K-K-Katy, Keep the Home-Fires Burning, and Tenting on the Old Camp Ground. Others that are listed I had never heard before: The Soldier's Tear, When Alexander Takes His Ragtime Band to France, and the very funny Captain Jinks! From first to last I found this CD a joy to hear. Jon English has a beautiful voice, and he sings with such clarity that you can understand every word! There are songs that will get your feet taping, and others that will bring a tear to your eye. The chorus is quite obviously not a professional choir, and that's all the better! They sing with an infectious energy and spirit that'll make you want to sing along. Add into that the horns, flute and percussion and this album becomes very pleasant experience. This is one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time, and I heartily recommend it.

The song Don't Cry For Me Argentina is so beautiful, and this CD features all the Dance Remixes you've ben waiting for + the original album version!! The best of the four is the Miami Mix, the full 12" Remix is brilliant! The album version, Miami Mix Edit (the most popular mix) and the Miami Spanglish Mix Edit, are also brilliant! From the film Evita, where Madonna starrs as Eva Peron! Recommended for collectors + true die-hard Madonna fans!! If you want more remixes buy the US Maxi!

5 out of 5 stars Madonna Is Truly Sensational As Eva Peron!.......2003-07-19

When Madonna starred in the film Evita, many critics were sceptical. They were silenced, however, when they saw the movie. Many critics gushed that it was Madonna's best-ever film role and it probably was. The vocal training that the international superstar went through to look and sound the part was very demanding and Madonna pull it off. The second single to be taken from the soundtrack to the film was Don't Cry For Me Argentina. It was released in December 1996 and peaked at No.3 in the UK, becoming Madonna's biggest hit for more than four years. It spent 12 long weeks on the chart, and put Madonna firmly back on track as the biggest superstar in the world.

Don't Cry For Me Argentina starts slow and soft. The gentle plucking of guitar strings and gentle violins are very relaxing and Madonna begins to sing the first verse, "It won't be easy. You'll think it's strange. When I try to explain how I feel. That I still need your love after all that I've done. You won't believe me. All you will see is a girl you once knew although she's dressed up to the nines at sixes and sevens with you." Madonna's voice is amazing, and then she sings "I had to let it happen. I had to change. Couldn't stay all my life down that hill. Looking out of the window staying out of the sun. So I chose freedom. Running around trying everything new but nothing impressed me at all. I never expected it to." It's the end of a long verse, and then as the violins rise Madonna sings the chorus, "Don't cry for me Argentina. The truth is I never left you. All through my wild days, my mad existence. I kept my promise - don't keep your distance." A solo violin then plays, and Madonna begins her second verse as the tempo increases, "And as fortune and as for fame. I never invited them in. Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired. They are illusions. They're not the solutions they promised to be. The answer was here all the time. I love you and hope you love me." Madonna then sings "Don't cry for me Argentina," and the audience hums the tune, as they slowly begin to accept her persuasive ways. The tempo then rises and Madonna belts out the chorus once more, as she gains confidence in her portrayal as Eva Peron. The song then dies down and Madonna sings, "Have I said too much? There's nothing more I can think of to say to you. But all you have to do is look at me to know that every word is true!" The song then climaxes with trumpets, violins, pianos and much more in a grand finale.

The video to Don't Cry For Me Argentina is simply the performance that is in the film Evita. Madonna stands on a balcony in front of a big crowd below singing her song. She is very persuasive and converts the audience to love her once more by the end. It really is an iconic scene, and one Madonna should very proud of. All in all, this is definitely the best song to be taken from the soundtrack to Evita - a true modern day classic!

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.
