Right up there with "Wasteland"--you gotta have it.......2005-07-14

Together with "Too Long in the Wasteland" this album "Candyland" is just too good to miss.
Fine low key descriptive story telling done by an interesting voice backed by great music. I suppose you could, possibly, maybe, get tired of some of these great songs. In the 17 years since "Wasteland" was released I never have, it remains among my all time music favorites with "Candyland" beside it.
Listen to "Storekeeper" for an example.......it is on a par with "Bullet Holes in the Mailbox".
Music for thinking folks, video that needs no screen!

Candyland.......2004-11-14

Okay all you out there reviewing this CD, not his best, but it has some songs that resonate. I am shocked that no one mentioned Safe Side. Maybe no one reviewing the CD has lived in San Antonio. He nailed it in a big way. This CD is a little softer than his others, (with the exception of Safe Side), there are ballads, kind of sweet ones. It would not be the first of his CDs in my collection, but to round out all the others it is not at all bad.

The man is a Southwestern Bruce Springsteen. His lyrics are evocative of a part of this country that few artists have written about. Okay, his voice is not what one would call great, but like Springsteen, Dylan, Neil Young and to take it back farther, Woody Guthrie, his unique sound echoes the songs he is singing/writing. Face it, if Celine Dion were singing these songs we would all be hanging our heads over the toilet.

I would strongly recommend his live CD. It gives a bit of insight to the man as well as his music.

It would have been nearly impossible for McMurtry to have topped his album 'Too Long in the Wasteland' but this is a strong follow-up. I listened to the Cassette so many times that it refuses to play any longer - I literally wore it out!

Strong lyrics. Strong music. Makes me get all philosophical as I sing along.

McMurtry's Sophomore Effort is His Weakest.......2002-08-26

Simply put, James McMurtry is (arguably) the best American folk rocker currently working. He writes great story songs almost effortlessly, with memorable images and clever wordplay. But what really makes him special is that he never lets his lyrical concerns get in the way of his catchy hook-laden songwriting. That said, "Candyland" is perhaps the weakest of his five studio albums (a sixth is on the way in September 2002). It was his sophomore effort and was recorded (like his superior debut album, "Too Long in the Wasteland") under the watchful eye of his musical mentor, John Cougar Mellencamp, using members of Mellencamp's band. That's part of the problem, for McMurtry often sound too much like Mellencamp through much of this album.

Still, there are some first class McMurtry recordings here. The best is "Where's Johnny," that opens the record on a melancholy note with lyrics about a young man whose emotional troubles ruin a promsing future. Also fine are "Don't Waste Away," the rocking "Good Life," and an actual love song of sorts, "Dusty Pages" that closes the album. The rest of the material, however, is not as strong as what you'll find on McMurtry's more recent classic albums "It Had to Happen" and "Where'd You Hide the Body."

Overall, a not bad album from an artist who has produced much better during his career.

an amazing collection......have played it many times, and now bought the cd for my new portable cd player..it just gets better. Each song is a story.......his songwriting is the best

Candyland.... what a treat.......2003-03-07

It's sad that Candyland fell apart almost as soon as success hit them. A friend of mine bought "Suck it & See" and played it constantly when I was around until it melted into my brain.
I've been listening to it on and off since it came out in 1991 and I still find it to be an inspired, lyrical and well-produced treat.

Mixed Feelings.......2005-04-27

I'm a big fan of all kinds of music including gothic so naturally I liked this cd because the music on it is pretty good. But I don't like the way this band represents themselves. The Bible teaches us to share the Gospel with others but it also tells us to be careful not to offend other Christians, and that if it came to it that we were to choose to offend non-Christians rather than our brothers in Christ so that they would God's children's unity in Christ. These guys don't seem to care about who they offend. In addition I read an interview with them and they WOULD NOT come out and say that they were Christians, not only that but their website is pretty questionable for a Christian band. The Bible also tells Christians to be above reproach so no one can accuse them of any wrong. I gave this cd 5 stars because the music is good, but I won't buy it because of how the band represents themselves.

Great ministry, underrated band, pop culture's confusion.......2004-03-13

I was introduced to R&D through a friend at Reedley College, he told me all about them as he saw I was into Cradle of Filth and many other bands our society deems evil or dangerous, but was also interested in Alice Coopers christian albums. He later brought along their 2003 release and I was impressed, I am purchasing their albums in hopes that they may be able to rise from the underground! If they make it onto the headbangers ball, that would show the world that Christian Goths exist on a big scale! Goth culture is always mistakened for Satanism even though back in the 1980's Depeche Mode had a song called "Personal Jesus" addressing religion and faith in a virtuous and not satanic or sacreligious ways. Demon Hunter is paving their path through the Metal scene, they are featured on the MTV2 Headbangers Ball CD! This means that their can be a chance for R&D to be heard! 5 out of 5!

this is the cd for you I have heard many of they're songs and I tell you if you like gothic metal like I do this is it. alot of ppl say they're the christian version of marilyn manson, they may look ahlil like him, but they're exspressing them selfs the way they want and they follow God thats the important thing.

This was a tight cd. Thats all there is to it. Ther arnt many cds like this one. It has a different mix and sound to it that makes you want to roll to this cd. It had oustanding lyrics and if you like the laid back but tight smooth flows then pick this 1 up.

This CD is all you would expect from Mic-C.......2002-05-29

This CD is G from bottom to top. almost every song is tight, with about 6 that are off the hook. Game Over, Money Talks, Too Much Stress, Northside Ridahs, One More Day and Ghetto Polotics are all so sick. if you like any Mic-C you have heard you will most likely like this. Also get the Hollow tip and Mic-C CD called 2sav: Sav'd Out it is Gangsta.

good as I thought.......2000-08-01

This CD is a good as I expected, and I expected a lot because every Highside Record to this date are classic in my opinion. If you like Mic C on the Hollowtip CDs, Young Ridah CD on the New Mob Comp, and all the other songs he appeared on then for sure you will enjoy this CD. There is only about two songs that I was not feelin to much but they were still tight, I mean you could still slump them if you were to lazy to change the track. But I have 1 warning if you are stuck on the studio gangters of Black Market you might not like this CD as hard as it is for me to think that anybody would not a like this CD

Not all sweet in Candyland........2000-06-27

The highly anticipated debut album from Mic-C was one that was of dissapointment. Mic C is known for creating a heated tag team with label mate Hollow Tip. But in this album we find that Mic-C lacks creativeness that we expect from him. Don't get me wrong. This is not a bad album by any means. Hollow Tip, Young Ridah, and Dame make their usual appearances on a High Side release. These tracks are slammin. Then a duet with Slim Loc 1 begins to close out the album nicely. The real dissapointment for me was the production. There wasn't many songs to ride to. More of a laid back style than what we should expect. If you a Sacramento rap fan, go ahead and pic it up. If you looking to blown away, you might pass it up.
