5 out of 5 stars Best Heavenly ever.......2007-07-08

If your a fan of power metal or melodic speed metal or just good ol' fashion metal, this is a must have. I didnt think they could out do Dust To Dust, exspecially with Fred in Dragonforce, but I think this album is way better then Inhuman Rampage... No offense to Sam and the boys.

5 out of 5 stars top notch power metal.......2007-04-25

far and away, this is the best power metal album i've heard since sonata arctica's "reckoning night". sonata's very own tony kakko (among others) even does some guest vox! every song on this album is great and it never lets up. great melodies, great orchestrations, great solos... all around amazing!!! i recommend this to any fans of fast, symphonic metal, you will not be disappointed. i've listened to this cd at least once (usually more) every day since ive gotten it and it just keeps getting better and better. go buy it now!!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, perhaps their best ever.......2007-01-03

After a string of bad/very weak albums, Hypocrisy has returned with a vengence, producing what could arguably be called their best album. That's right - it's that good.

What surprised me most about this album is how much the band sounded like they did on the Final Chapter and on their self-titled albums: intense, brutal melodicism, the right blend of heavy riffing and tremolo passages, slow and melancholy tracks that balance well with the heavy, fast, aggressive tracks, and an amazing range of vocals by guitarist Peter Tägtgren. The second most surprising thing that struck me about the album is how original, new, and fresh it sounds. What we have is a paradox: on the one hand, this is vintage Hypocrisy; on the other hand, it does not sound recycled or stale in the slightest.

The production on this is really phenomenal, a real contrast to the last 2-3 crappy albums they put out where the production was terrible. Another thing that stands out is the vocal ranger of Tägtgren - he can shriek like Dani Filth or produce a deep guttural growl that sounds like Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth.

To sum up, this album is nothing short of amazing. If you liked the Final Chapter or their self-titled, buy this. If you like quality melodic but brutal death metal from Sweden, buy this.

5 out of 5 stars Hard and Heavy with melody!!! (4.8 stars).......2006-07-03

Hypocrisy hasnt dissappointed me yet. In my opinion "Virus" should be listened to at least once or twice everyday if not more. If you thought that you had heard the extreme sides of Melodic Death Metal...you havent until you've heard this!

This album is great in every aspect. Lyrically, intrumentally, vocally, etc. The only thing that bothered me was the lack of guitar solos and thats the ONLY reason it got a 4.8 from me.

The bottom line is, if you like Melodic Death Metal, and you like your Metal HEAVY and BRUTAL, then BUY THIS ALBUM!

5 out of 5 stars damn, another great album from '05.......2006-05-06

Hypocrisy seems to have hit the peak of their career with 'Virus'. A perfect blend of brutality and melody with the good old Hypocrisy trademark sound. A %100 flawless album for fans of In Flames, At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity, ect.

5 out of 5 stars Brutaful Music To Die To .......2006-04-03

This is a great album. Not one track is skipable, in my book.
"Warpath" is the highlight. The best drumming on any Hypocrisy album is found here.

4 out of 5 stars Great Techstep album.......2007-02-06

This is my first Ed Rush/Optical CD (I'm relatively new to the Drum N Bass scene), But given the quality of the tracks on Chameleon, I can't wait for the next album. It might be a bit heavy for people really new to DnB, but if you like a good techstep, neurofunk and even a bit of jazzstep in your listening queue, you cant go wrong with this one! The sweet drum n bassed version of Weezer's "hashpipe" (Bloodmoney) is easily one of the most high energy tracks on the album!

5 out of 5 stars Very catchy grunge-power pop, unfairly ridiculed........2004-01-24

I remember two industry jokes about Green Apple Quick Step (named after a Byrds song, of all things): a) That it was "the last unsigned band in the Washington grunge scene; and b) That its song, "Bottle", was a ripoff of Nirvana's "Negative Creep".

I don't know if either observation was true, but I do know that when I first saw lead single "Dirty Water Ocean" on Muchmusic, I bought the album right away and it stuck to my CD player like glue. While far from a perfect album, Wonderful Virus is full of quirky charm, snappy songwriting, and instrumental hooks.

There's something to be said for a band that can make "Peel away/Hairless skin from the alien" into a chorus hook, and that's exactly what it does on "Ludes and Cherrybombs". While the sci-fi-hip lyrics are an acquired taste, the inherent musicality of the songwriting gets through. "Dirty Water Ocean" is a breathless rush of adrenalin, like the fastest, crunchiest ruckus raised by a band right next door; ripoff or no, the shuffling "Bottle", with its sludgy Alice in Chains-like groove, changing tempos and male-female vocal tag team, is an arresting rock tune; "Rapid" and personal favourite "Eating on All Fours" distinguish this band, the former with its languishing free-flowing melodicism, the latter for its muscular rock-anthem energy, blitz of chord changes, and bassist Mariann Braeden's wistful backing vocal.

Lead singer Ty Willman's vocal style owes more to progressive rock (sounding almost like Blue Oyster Cult's Eric Bloom!) than punk or grunge; the participation of Braeden in vocal chores enriches the sonic palette greatly; and the instrumentation crackles.

One of my favourite records of that fertile alternative-rock period.

5 out of 5 stars They deserve more credit.........2003-04-05

This album is so amazing and such a breath of fresh air.. I also like "Reloaded" too..

5 out of 5 stars A Band That Should Be Recognized As One of the Best Ever.......1999-03-20

Who can't love the backwater/alternative sound of Ty Willman's voice. As if his vocals alone are not enough to hook you, Mari Ann Braeden's angelic background singing adds an element that separates GAQS's stlyes from all others. I'm an experienced music listener, who orders you to buy this album. This album gives you alternative rock songs such as "Feel My Way", and "Dirty Water Ocean". Also amazing songs that differ in stye, such as the soft "Rapid", and the spunky "Can't Believe". And who couldn't be obsessed with the song (my favorite) "Ludes And Cherrybombs".

5 out of 5 stars think of Slayer on downers........2005-05-16

if Slayer's two guitarists took downers, and one of them took a break, Virus 7 is what you would hear. the music is slightly slower than Slayer's music, but it still rocks the joint.

    5 out of 5 stars absolutely spectacular!.......2002-07-13

I've always loved Hank Shermann for his work with King Diamond in Mercyful Fate as I love Andy La Roque, the guitarist in King Diamond's solo band, and I think they're two of the most underrated guitarists around. So, whenever they put out solo projects of their own, I jump on them. Virus 7 is even better than the Gutrix album, Hank's last solo project. I love this cd, I play it everyday, it's great to drive to at night as well. It's very well produced, and I believe these guys were just trying to pull of a fun, hard-driving metal album...Mission accomplished! I give it 5 stars and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Good and heavy.......2001-05-06

When I bought this c.d., I didn't know what to expect. But after listening to it, I was really impressed. First of all, the sound of this c.d. is awesome.Great engineering.I guess it was done in Sweden, where they are really sickin the head about being audiophiles. Anyway, check out "Better believe", "Fight the Fight" and "Execution".They are very much in the vein of Armored Saint and Mercyful Fate with a more aggressive vocal style!! A

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorite tributes.......2005-11-10

Maybe the original is always the best. Maybe no one should ever cover a song. Maybe we shouldn't wear our influences on our sleeve. Maybe this music thing is just too exclusive and elite and we should stop listening.

...or, maybe all that provincial, possessive, narrow B.S. should be ignored, and we should enjoy great CDs whatever form they take. Revolutionary notion?

Granted, there are a few skippers on here -- but there's a high percentage of superb readings of DK songs in a wide stylistic range, and the sound quality is excellent.

Not to be missed are the Didjits, Alice Donut, Steel Pole Bath Tub, and Kramer's psuedo-duet with Sebastian the Crab (from the Little Mermaid)...so wierd!

I prefer the mix of "California Uber Alles" on this CD to the one on the Disposable Heroes album, if you are a fan of them. It sounds a little more immediate.

      4 out of 5 stars crazy CD.......2005-02-16

If your looking for a new sound to old DK favorites look no further. This CD has artits that capture the mood and the feeling of the DKs but do it in there own way. From country to rap to loungue versions of some of the best punk songs ever made. A great buy, and probably the best 99 cents i ever spent

      1 out of 5 stars Tribute albums?.......2002-10-25

The problem with tribute albums; you only buy them only if you liked the original, and this is not the original.
The only remakes I like of DK songs; Disposeable Heros 'California Uber Alles', and Mojo Nixon's 'Winnebago Warrior', which suck on this album.
I mean buy the original, and if you have to buy a remake, buy the original remakes, Hipocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury and Gadzooks: The Homemade Bootleg.

4 out of 5 stars Aging very well........2000-06-08

I bought this album on vinyl when it was released. I sat in my room with headphones on, listening over and over again. It was great. I taped it and listened in my car. My friends asked, "what the hell IS this?". I kept listening. It ruled.

Time passed, I lost the tape, sold my turntable. Last month I bought the CD, wondering if it would still sound as good as it did when I was younger.

It mostly did. The highlights are definately Moon Over Marin, California Ueber Alles (and if you like it too, check out Spearhead, Mike Franti's current group), and the NOMEANSNO track (a capella! wow!). The other tracks often benefit from a little more volume, and some are too close to the original DK interpretation to be very fresh, but altogether a fine tribute album, and worth your time and money if you like Dead Kennedy's music.

      5 out of 5 stars a dead kennedy's no brainer.......1999-10-20

this was Alternative tentacles 100th release, they wanted to make it count. if you like DK, this is a must have. The covers are well done and too much fun. this album gives you a complete new feeling for"Moon over Marin" if you are old school and remember the "old days" of punk, this is a definite keeper

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Black Cars And Night Dogs.......2005-02-10

This album is very noir, very dark and full of much atonality. If you liked their previous project, Ved Buens Ende, you will probably like this as it is much of the same. There are some differences though: The black metal sound is hidden much deeper now competing with swans-esque dissonance and a sort of art-rocky atmosphere; The beats are slower and more jazz-orientated and the music is just much clearer and calmer.

Some people have complained that the sound is too garage-like, and I can definitely see the argument. The 'vibe' that the album strives for isn't some basement recording that say, Darkthrone or 1349 want, this music is raw but not to the point of convolution. A very clear recording would better suit the album, well, maybe next time.

Another complaint is that Carl-Michael plays guitar instead of drums, which makes for weaker drums and guitars than is the norm for the band. I don't fully agree myself, the drumming is nothing fancy or virtuous, it's simple, aggressive and a lot of metal is used, opposed to leather or bass. It suits the music, and it does have a dark, playful edge to it at all times. The guitar is pefect and I don't think anyone in the scene could do it better. Carl-Michael doesn't want technical mayhem or punishing, deep and heavy riffs. He wants to break away from the black metal archetype that has imprisoned him in the past, I think this album is a beautiful and strong departure.

The strongest songs on the album vary from person to person. My personal favourites are Carheart, Road, Gun Meets Mother and Hustler. Each one offers a very different sound from the other and combined, really show how diverse and amazing this album is. The other songs (aside from the instrumental tracks) are grounded in very similar soil.

I would title this post black metal. It's strange, dark and playful all at once. Fans of Swans, Thinking Plague, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum can get into this as well as fans of the Norwegian metal scene. This tries to unite the best of both worlds and in the end creates something genuinely dark and menacing. Avoiding the pretension of post/art rock scene and the predictable, adolescent energy of the extreme metal scene, it was the album of the month for me, without a doubt.
