Dianne Izzo's debut is the complex expression of a modern woman that is both a musical and visceral experience. Recorded in Chicago under producer Brad Wood's watchful eye (he's worked with Liz Phair, among others), Izzo's dramatic compositions are alternately emotionally direct and poetically abstract. She sings in a passionate voice vaguely reminiscent of PJ Harvey and Patti Smith, but her florid songwriting is distinctly her own. Ably supported by guitarist Jim Becker, bassist Eddie Carlson, and drummer Ned Folkerth, Izzo tends to powerful topics like desperate love and painful addictions. Her particularly heady wordplay may take a few listenings to completely unravel, but the concise musical backdrop makes One an extremely compelling package. Essential Listening.......1999-08-02

OK, like the saying goes - "anything good is worth waiting for" and this certainly applies to this marvelous CD. However caution to the impatient listener: This CD takes time to reveal its depth and complexity. Listen to it 10 times before throwing the towel in. It is indeed rare that the listener is challenged in this day of disposible "one hit" wonders. Open your mind and the rest will follow - ONE song at a time.

Inspired music, thoughtful, reflective lyrics.......1999-06-23

I can't put this CD down. Diane Izzo isn't afraid to let her voice fall apart for emotion's sake. "Faker," the story of a nurse who falls for an insurance scam artist, is so catchy, it's criminal. "Horse of Diana" is a modern Greek tragedy as she spits at fate and the vultures waiting to devour her. The album is worth getting just for the song "Ground." Izzo sounds like early Patti Smith singing a dark, brooding meditation of betrayal with a glimmer of hope.

Disturbing, complex lyrics. Strong, odd vocals. Great debut........1999-05-30

Diane Izzo's "One" hardly sounds like a debut album. Her lyrics are generally dark, disturbing & complex--that could describe a LOT of albums from a LOT of artists out there these days. What sets Izzo apart from the crowd is her strong, odd vocal style: she can break a one-syllable word into three or four parts and can shift from a conspiratorial whisper to a filling-rattling wail with grace and ease. (I'm told that this album doesn't even do her voice justice--that it's even more amazing in person.) In particular, "Wicked Spell" shakes with lingering childhood rage and confusion, while "Venice" comes off giddy and joyful despite contemplations of wild youth, lost love and impending mortality. Couple the lyrics with the vocals, and you get a musical experience that remains embedded in the ears for days afterwards. Any fan of PJ Harvey or Tom Waits would be well advised to give Diane Izzo's "One" a listen (or two or three or...)--you won't regret it.

Impressive creativity by a fine musician.......1998-12-20

Izzo is a multi-talened musician who creates vivid images. Izzo is a incredible talent whose works are, unfortunately, unknown to the American audience. I was fortunate to acquire a copy of his Christmas cd, Tino Izzo - Christmas, and I was overwhelmed by his sensitive , yet vibrant renderings of familiar Christmas fare. No way could I ever get those emotional sounds out of my old 63 Stratocaster. This album continues the discovery of his creative work. Although not necessarily something to play after a stressful day at the office since some selections will peak out the decibel meter, Foreign Skies will awaken your musicial curiousity and move that heartbeat up a notch. I find new sounds, interpretations, and cool riffs every time I play it. Tino Izzo is a masterful guitarist who evidently loves his instrument and creates some incredibly memorable sounds for those of us who crave to hear more of his stylings. I would love to give this creative artist a songlist and then be completely amazed by his fresh renderings, but this request pales in the sight of this album. It's alive, it's new, and it begs for a sequel to be available for the American audience of this wonderfully talented Canadian.

Drifting in and out of each cut on these mostly light jazz pieces he creates music as varied as the instruments he plays: a Gibson Chet Atkins, a 1966 Fender Telecaster and an Ovation 1713 Classical. He also exhibits an able hand at bass drums and mandolin.

I really enjoy this album along with Tino Izzo's other 3 albums. All guitar instrumental music with a haunting flamenco style. You won't quickly forget this album.

Nostalgia Trails is a must have CD........2006-05-30

I heard Tino Izzo for the first time in a bookstore. I was immediately intrigued by the intensely emotional guitar tracks. This album takes you on an emotional rollercoaster of pleasure and joy. Just about every song on this CD is intrigueing and finely done. You will want to listen to this one over and over. I was very glad that I have finally discovered Tino Izzo. I hope he graces us with his music long into the future.

Guitarist Izzo is vibrant and lively and this provides newly remastered tracks from his previous albums plus three new ones. While this compilation may be best recommended for newcomers, prior fans won't want to miss the new tracks and will find the remastered old songs appealing.
