As one of the last few shining lights at Puff's crumbling Bad Boy empire, G-Dep's crisp, conversational flow was expected to help fill the gaping hole left at the label by the death of Biggie and resignation of the LOX. Interestingly, Dep's solo debut actually does a decent job (along with Black Rob's Life Story) of further cementing Puff's rep as a great spotter of talent. G-Dep cashes in on the street buzz that has been festering since his performances on the Bad Boy compilation The Saga Continues... on "Special Delivery," a modest head-nodder with its minimalist loop and drum programs--Puff ad-libs notwithstanding. On "I Am," which teams up arguably two of the greatest MCs of all time (Rakim and Kool G Rap) with Dep, and the Depster more than holds his own. "Keep It Gangsta" features an introspective Shyne waxing cryptically about the court case that got him locked down, and the clubby "Smash on the First Night" is another one of those must-hear gems. Still, the album has problem areas. Why lazily lift a loop from Eric B and Rakim's classic "Microphone Fiend" on "Doe Fiend"? And why do two of the best joints on this album ("Lets Get It," "Child of the Ghetto") already appear on the The Saga Continues...? --Dalton Higgins

Potential...Potential...Potential...Now Where Is The Follow Up Album (4.5 stars).......2006-07-31

A lot of people have heard of G. Dep's debut "Child Of The Ghetto" but decided to use it as a pillow and slept on it. Why, it questions me. The album to me is a good job, by Bad Boy's lesser known members.

Okay, when he came out with "Lets Get It", many listeners were thinking..."I was born ready/and I was already on fish and spaghetti" (?!?!?)...but anyway, the song was a good dance song for the summer of 2001. G.Dep has some lyrical skills to back him up, as he tries to get his voice heard on "Everyday" and his biggest hit as of today "Special Delivery" (If you remember the video, P. Diddy yells continiously. He doesn't do that on the album version). Another banger to me is "Danger Zone" which is backed by a nice beat. I think the girl is Lady May (I'm not sure...I can't find my linear book) on the song "Smash On The First Night" as G.Dep tries to get some on the first night, but she says no.

As I said before, G.Dep has rhymes, and he shows it well on the recreation of Eric B. & Rakim's "Microphone Fiend" and makes it the song "Dough Fiend". What I like about that song is that he doesn't exactly copy their rhymes like many artists who do the same thing, but he flips them around and rhymes about making money, but keeps the same format as the origonal song. Speaking of Rakim, he and Kool G. Rap appear on the song "I Am" that is another great song. Other notable guest appearances are Mark Curry, Loon, and Kain (new commers of Bad Boy Roster at the time) on the "Lets Get It (remix)" and "Blast Off".

I myself enjoyed this album very much. I don't understand why people dismiss G.Dep because of one or two lyrical errors. If they actually heard the album, they will probably like it. I recommend giving it a try.

If you didn't know already, some of these tracks appear on P. Diddy's "Bad Boy: The Saga Continues". My only knock is that he could have recorded some newer tracks between the two albums or added "Hit 'Em High" and good mixtape joint that I heard before the album's release by him.

Bad Boy's last glimmer of hope.......2005-07-30

This was the last dude that was capable to bring life to b*tch boy in the post B.I.G. era. The whole album is hot in my opinion. What straight robbed this out of 5 was diddy's unnecesarry adlibs and features. He destroys everything good. But nonetheless this is the last good b*tchboy album. This will always stay in my collection. And I recommend it.

G. Dep was another rapper on Bad Boy records who released one album and then disapeared. "Child of the Ghetto" was released in 2001 and was his Bad Boy/rap game debut.

This album really surprised me coming out of Bad Boy. G. Dep's lyrics, beats, and most hooks are great. This album is near classic material. Like I stated before...it's just sad to see a good talent just sitting on the backburner of Bad Boy Records.

Great Debut.......2004-11-06

G-Dep delivers a very solid debut. it's a shame he's on Bad Boy cause he probably won't get to drop again for years (look at Carl Thomas, Black Rob, Loon, etc.). The best Bad Boy album since Lox left (early 2000). He has a unique flow and delivers his lyrics good over some of the best beats I've heard in a while. A must have album.

ONE OF THE BEST RAP ALBUMS EVER!.......2004-08-31

ITS A SHAME THIS ALBUM JUST DIDN'T BLOW UP THE WAY I THOUGHT IT SHOULD HAVE. I THINK BADBOY RECORDS IS TO BLAME FOR NOT PROMOTING IT WELL. THE PRODUCTION & THE LYRICS ARE AMAZING FROM START TO FINISH, LISTEN TO THE LYRICS AND PLAY THIS ALBUM LOUD ON A GOOD SOUND SYSTEM, TRUST ME, YOU WON'T BE SORRY. I HOPE G. DEP'S NEXT ALBUM WILL BRING THE SUCCESS HE RIGHTFULLY DESERVE, I'LL BE FIRST IN LINE TO GET IT.

Terrible....straight up garbage. Too much of an avarage joe. Alright beats but his flow doesn't even match the instrumentals. His flow sounds exactly like an old school west coast style in which he is from the east. You will regret it if you buy this album. I myself, as soon as I get up from this couch, I'm throwing this CD right in the trash.

INFINITY IS ACTUALLY FROM CHUCKTOWN, THE PORT CITY, CHARLIE-O, OR SIMPLY CHARLESTON SC. THIS ALBUM IS PRETTY STRAIGHT, BUT IT IS NOT REALLY THE RAPPING STYLE THAT IS PROMINENT IN CHARLESTON. IT WORKS THOUGH.

If you like the style and content of Petey Pablo, you'll like this cd as well. The only bad thing about this cd is the at-times subpar production, which makes the cd repetitive and times. All in all, I can't stop listening. I actually would give it 3.5 stars.

Smiley the Ghetto Child - Antidote.......2006-05-08

Smiley the Ghetto Child's debut album "Antidote" (2006) was quietly release this past week. My introduction to Smiley came on Gang Starr's last album "The Ownerz" on a dope cut called "Werdz From The Ghetto Child". After doing some reading I learned Bronx's Smiley has appeared on other notable albums like Cormega's "The Realness", Ghostwritten for artists like the Black Sheep, and is cousin to Melachi The Nutcracker (One Half Of Group Home). Production on this album comes from Chaze, Showbiz, Nitro, Sebb, DJ Green Lantern, E-Blazie, Ted Birkley, Gallegos, Fanon XP, the Grouch and DJ Premier. Smiley starts this independent album off thanking fans repping underground Rap and thanking his fans for supporting the movement. The first track (and my current favorite) is "Limousine Dream", Smiley shines on this cut delivering memorable verses backed by some off the hook production (Chaze). Smiley then reps his hood on the grimy "Bronx Baby", while talking about his struggles on "No Love". WC makes the albums first guest appearance on "L.A.N.Y.", "Pig Latin" follows Smiley rhymes over a Green Lantern beat, which Immortal Technique used for a track called "Bin Laden". I prefer Immortals version. Another standout out for me is "Close to 30 G's", Smiley talks about the game and provides his own chorus backed by some nice production. More thugged out cuts like "Bodychalk" and "Monster" follow, I like the later, Smiley rhymes with hunger backed by some dope production feeling the Violins. Smiley drops some raw rhymes on "All On You", also feeling his chorus to this cut. "The Wake Up Call" is one of the albums singles, and has Smiley remembers being a young kid hustling on the streets. I was expecting some better production from Primo on this one. Smiley delivers another standout with the albums last full length track the strong "Rest In Peace", remembering his friends that died, and paying tribute to them. I think Smiley could work on being more lyrically consistent; there were tracks where a strong presence was lacking on this release. On the other hand tracks like "Limousine Dreams", "Close to 30 G's" and "Rest In Peace" are memorable. The "Antidote" is a solid album worth checking out. 3.5.
