Amazon.com's Best of 2001

After unearthing Stephen Sondheim's youthful effort, Saturday Night, a couple of years ago, producers desperate to bank on the name of one of Broadway's last living titans continue chasing after obscure offerings. The Frogs was a 1974 adaptation of a play by Aristophanes and was staged by the Yale Repertory Theater for a week. This recording, the first complete one, boasts the presence of Nathan Lane, Davis Gaines, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. In Broadway star power, that's like having Jim Carrey, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise in the same movie. Evening Primrose was a 1966 ABC special, which spawned a couple of songs ("I Remember" and "Take Me to the World") that made it into the cabaret and solo recital repertories. Granted, these two pieces are for Sondheim completists, but they do provide an interesting glimpse into the mind of one of the musical theater's most brilliant auteurs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Primrose Shines, Frogs Leaps!.......2005-08-27

This recording is arguably one of Sondheims greatest! The Frogs, which appears here with a brilliant cast (Nathan Lane, Brian Stokes Mitchell among others) is one of Mr. Sondheims oddest pieces of theater. Although it was recently revived on Broadway with a new book by Mr. Lane and that recording is probably better, the entire first half of this recording (which is The Frogs) is brilliant for nostalgias sake and for the amazing expierence of the music itself. Mr. Sondheim has created such music for The Frogs! Very grandiose and stunning!

But it is really the final four tracks on the album (The Evening Primrose) that shines. The Evening Primrose is also an interesting Sondheim show but this one is quite possibly worth the price of the album itself. This recording (the only LEGAL one i know of) of the show is... well... perfect. The music is Sondheim at his best, the singers (Neil Patrick Harris plays the lead) are terrific and it just sounds glorious!

The Frogs might be an interesting and entertaining reason to purchase this album but it will The Evening Primrose that will make you scream with joy!

2 out of 5 stars Can I sell it On Ebay!!!!.......2005-06-01

Contrary to other reviwes posted I will tell you that the Evening Primrose on the Mandy Patinkin Cd "Dress Casual" IS the "Primrose" to own. This one was in my opinion under acted and undersung. While Mandy Patinkin is always over the tip, Ms Peters is one of the best Interpreters of Sondheim's works and the orchestration on this is much darker and deep, like the subject matter of the piece. I found this whole CD lacking, given that just like the "Dress Casual" I bought it only for the "Evening Primrose" selections. Thank the GODS for CD Burners so I can compile my own best of Sondheim CD.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Evening Primrose.......2004-04-15

I find the Evening Primrose here much better than that on "Dress Casual." Firstly, because the two performers--Neil Patrick Harris and Theresa McCarthy--are both amazing singers. Also, because both of these performers are younger and thus, their voices are more "youthful". For this musical, in particular, "youthfulness" is important; Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin are simply to mature to effectively do these parts. I find Neil Patrick Harris, in particular, absolutely superb, and his version of "Not While I'm Around" (on the NYP Sweeney Todd recording) is far and away the best I have ever heard (except for LuPone's dismal British accent). This Evening Primrose alone is worth the price of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing........2004-02-17

>The Patinkin-Peters version of "Evening Primrose" is in Patinkin's "Dress Casual" CD, the studio recording that became the basis of his Broadway concert. I believe this was the first time all four songs were recorded.

Possibly, but on THIS disc we have the first time all four songs were recorded UNDER SONDHEIM'S SUPERVISION, and that makes all the difference in the world. Mandy Patimkin greatly distorts "If You Can Find Me"'s melody; Bernadette Peters's voice is under the accompaniment on "I Remember", and the arrangements on "Dress Casual" are over-elaborate, gooey, and unrestrained. Neither singer effectively plays his character. No, the "Evening Primrose" you want is right here.

5 out of 5 stars Addendum.......2004-01-31

If you're looking for the Mandy Patinkin "Dress Casual" CD (as an alternative or supplemental "Evening Primrose" recording), note that Amazon has it listed, for some reason, under "classical music".

5 out of 5 stars The Second Coming?.......2005-10-12

One word: bimpop. Once again Jermaine Dupri pulls off a masterful moment in Western History. This album is a perfect complement to his guest appearance on the Steve Harvey Show. Jermaine is out to show everyone once and for all: I'm not fronting -- I do exist! And I'll keep existing depsite the doubters, the haters, the finaglers and the Zionists until I die. Right on Jermaine. It just goes to show that backup dancers can talk, too.

4 out of 5 stars Solid "2nd" solo release for JD.......2005-07-22

For his "2nd" solo album (even though this as well as "Life in 1472" have guests on most to all of the songs), JD did a good job. I'm not a huge fan of his but this album is solid. Guests are mostly to thank for that, as well as some great production (that he always seems to pull off). Of the 13 songs on here (it does have a lot of skits/interludes) 1 is a classic, 1 or 2 are near classics, 4 are ok, 1 I skip, and the rest are good. For those who have heard JD before, you know what to expect, songs about women and flashing and flautin his money, nothing new. Production is also good, JD takes part in 11 of the songs (he produces 1 and co-produces 10) and Swizz Beats & Neptunes each do a song. I'd recommend this album for his fans or fans of that kind of rap.

#3 - 8 (f/ UGK & Manuel Seal)
#5 - 7 (f/ Boo, Gotti, Usher, R.O.C.)

#13 - 8.5 (f/ Nate Dogg, R.O.C., Trey Lorenz, Katrina -- nice beat)

#15 - 9 (f/ Jagged Edge -- great beat and story)

1 out of 5 stars INSTRUCTIONS : AVOID THIS GARBAGE!!!.......2003-10-12

This guy is the biggest joke in hip hop today. All of the songs on this album sound ridiculous and boring. The beats could of been made by a second grader and as well as the lyrics. All of the songs are about bling bling, cars, champaigne and how he's the richest guy on the block. He is a prime example of the very sad state that hip hop is in today.Anybody with half a brain will avoid this album at all costs.DO NOT BUY THIS GARBAGE!!!

2 out of 5 stars ...........2003-07-14

I have never really been a JD fan, but I decided to give him another chance when I got this CD. And I still understand why I didn't like him from the beginning. His flow is too commercial for my liking and his verses are focused on materialistic things. One up side to the album, however is the beats. They are some really good beats, but too bad they are wasted on this trashy album.

JD should stay away from rapping and stick to producing. There are only two really good songs on the album, Welcome To Atlanta & Hate Blood. And neither of these songs are good because of Dupri.

There are some really good people featured on the album, and that makes the CD twice as dissappointing. JD - you need to improve your rapping or just give up altogether.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, Useable, & Profound.......2007-04-19

The best review I can offer is from my experience. The more I listen actively to this CD--*doing* what is suggested, practicing in the moment, applying it and playing with it throughout the day--the more I experience changes in every area of my life. This work has touched to my speaking, singing, sleep, attention, spiritual exercises, posture, movement and more. I recently completed the Los Angeles Marathon, and using the tools in this CD literally helped carry me through the final miles of the route. I am discovering a range with my voice and how my body can support my vocal expression that surprises me. This material opens doors, and that is how I am inspired to share it with others. Please check it out for yourself. There is a lot of value and beauty here, and a real gift from a masterful heart. Many thanks to William.

5 out of 5 stars Breath technique with superb confidence building for singers and speakers and everyone else!.......2007-04-19

Look no further! If you got to this cd,you found the keys to making the most of your vocal potential and boosting your professional confidence in one place. I have been blessed with studying in person with William, and I promise his breath control/vocal production instructions do the job. You must persevere in implanting and supporting the new breathing habits, and overcome backsliding, but I tell you it's worth the effort.
The middle section of the cd is a fabulously expansive and liberating and beautiful sequence of affirmations exquisitely designed to release all our programmed negative beliefs that may otherwise block our freedom to sing and present ourselves confidently in public to an audience. William recommends listening in silence for at least 30 days, but beyond that I like to say them out loud after him. My voice purrs.
The third section is a creative visualisation exercise designed to expand our creative faculties, capacity and receptivity, and again very beautifully done. Ignore naysayers, I urge you to buy the cd,it's a treat!

5 out of 5 stars Empowerment & Understanding How to breathe in 12 minutes.......2007-02-27

Much of my work is conducting presentations/seminars, and conducting psychotherapy sessions. I found this CD to be excellent for increasing and understanding how vocal power works. The fact that Hanrahan describes, illustrates, and shows how to practice his techniques in this fast-paced section of the CD is amazing. Tight, flowing, and easy to understand. I like this. The next section using guided imagery was very intriguing to me, as he guides the listener through a practice, then points out that you have just done something you may not have believed you could do. Impossible to argue with the fact you have just done it! An excellent technique, quickly building belief and confidence. I am looking forward to listening to Section 3 very soon, which I will comment upon in this arena.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly affirmations and guided imagery - no voice training.......2006-07-17

This CD has 3 parts - 1) an overview of Structural Breathing (13 min); 2) relaxation and affirmations (35 min), and 3) guided visualization (25 min).

Structural breathing is based on "apoggio" - breath control technique, used by Caruso and described in the book "Caruso and Tetrazzini on the art of singing" by Enrico Caruso and Luisa Tetrazzini edited by Dover Publications. I have found that the CD "Voice Lessons to Go", vol. 1, for example, contains breathing and vocalization exercises that make it easier to comprehend and practice this kind of breathing, even in the book "The 3 dimensional voice" has lovely graphic descriptions and numerous practical exercises for ehnacing the richness of the voice.

In this first part of the CD, there are few suggestions I have found inappropriate "Breathing through your nose weakens you", "Abdominal breathing weakens you", "Placing your tongue on the roof of your mouth weakens you" (the last may be meaningful to those who are practicing energy circulation). The author says that placing the tongue on the roof of the mouth "shuts off the switch" related the circulation of the energy. Nothing could be further from the truth - placing the tongue on the roof of the mouth connects two main meridians in the body and anyone who is actually actively engaged in working with energy circulation, through practices such as microcosmic orbit can attest to that from personal experience (the experience is very tangible, noticeable and empowering).

As jeannie Deva, the author of the "Contemporary Vocalist" improvement course mentioned - over the years of working and talking with many vocal teachers about the proper methods of breathing and singing and finding numerous discrepancies, she finally decided to pick up books on anatomy and find out for herself. I suggest you too do some more research and experimenting before taking for granted the information presented on this CD.

Just keep on repeating such suggestions for a while and notice what happens and since the author mentions kinesiology, you may as well repeat these kinds of suggestions and then do kinesiology when you are breathing through your nose (which I suppose most people do throughout the day) and notice what kind of suggestions are you impressing upon your subconscious mind.

The second part of this CD contains about 5 minutes of relaxation and 30 minutes of affirmations - mostly forgiveness affirmations that cover all possibilities - here are few examples:

I release and forgive myself for being good at singing.
I release and forgive myself for not being good at singing.
I release and forgive myself for liking the sound of my voice.
I release and forgive myself for not liking the sound of my voice.
I forgive myself for being nervous when I use my voice.
I forgive myself for not being nervous when I use my voice.
I release and forgive myself for being good at communication.
I release and forgive myself for not being good at communication.
I release and forgive myself for enjoying my voice.
I release and forgive myself for not enjoying my voice.

The third part is guided visualization (20 min) set to a music of Tranquil Harp designed to help you alter perception, set boundaries, enhance creativity, flexibility, and your ability to visualize.

This CD does not contain any voice training techniques - for that you should get either voice teacher or voice training CDs (or both). The main focus of this CD seems to be on helping you to summon the courage to express yourself.

4 out of 5 stars A Voice With Character.......2006-03-15

I have scripted meditations for myself before and they have been very powerful. It was with a lot of input on my part, but I used a book called Creating the Work You Love, by Rick Jarow. Excellent book to say the least. With this background, I got this Voice Power CD, the first time I listened to someone else's scripted meditation. He is a man of great character speaking to people with great character. Meaning people who really care and want to share and help. Very inspiring. I gave it a 4 because the first section on how to breathe didn't really speak to me all that well. I am into the power of breathing deeply and getting into a very healthy and relaxed and receptive state, and I believe in it highly, I'm probably just not open to someone telling me how. I had voice lessons and encountered the same problem. So essentially, the second two sections are what I plan to listen to over and over again. And I do believe it has and will make a difference in my life. Believe it or not, I was able to speak up about inequalities and injustices and made $100,000.00 in the process. It actually came out in the form of rage at the circumstances and from deep within, almost like an explosive force that I didn't even know was going to erupt so suddenly. So the voice cd here, is actually, more attuned to sweet and harmonious sounds, being balanced, being clear, being thoughtful and caring, and being able to say what you have to say with that kind of approach. And that it the type of person I normally and habitually am, but from my experience, it has helped me to speak up powerfully in an adverse and challenging type of situation as well, where other people refuse for the most part to see, and to demand that they see and even make resolution.

A revue created for the Whitney Museum's Composers' Showcase series (and sometimes known as You're Gonna Love Tomorrow), A Stephen Sondheim Evening collects songs with music and lyrics by Sondheim in a live 1983 concert featuring a top cast of Liz Callaway, Cris Groenendaal, Bob Gunton, George Hearn, Steven Jacob, Judy Kaye, and A Little Night Music's Victoria Mallory, with a special appearance by Angela Lansbury. While many of the songs were somewhat obscure at the time, they're rather familiar decades later, including selections from 1954's Saturday Night and outtakes from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. And though the Fender Rhodes sounds dated, the cast and the performances are excellent. Callaway's "What More Do I Need" is still definitive, and Sondheim himself accompanies Lansbury's "Send in the Clowns" and leads the singers on "Old Friends." --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars By no means bad!!!.......2005-01-04

I like this Sondheim Revue. The performers are good, and I appreciate that they don't try to be "clever" with Sondheim's music. They just performs it as it is written.

The orchestrations are...well...slim. But the synths aren't disturbing, except in Miles Gloriosus.

Otherwise some rare SJS gems are included here. And Angela Lansbury's Clowns is one of the few versions of this song worth listening to (it's not a bad song, but done so many times:P).

    3 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!!.......2004-05-28

This is one of the better Sondheim tributes, but because RCA cut out 2 numbers from the original 2 lp set to fit on one disc, I can only give this 3 stars. I owned the original lp set, and wasnt aware of this omission until after I bought the cd. One of the best songs on the original, You're Gonna Love Tomorrow/Love Will See Us Through with Liz Callaway (among others) from Follies was cut. Inexcusable! There were several other lesser songs they could've cut instead if time was a problem. (Poems and There's Something About a War being two of them) In small print in the booklet it says the 2 cut songs are available on Collected Sondheim. Yeah, like I want to shell out 50 bucks to get those 2 songs when I have everything else on that compilation? If you havent heard the original set, you'll probably love this recording and there is a lot to love, including Angela Lansbury singing Send In the Clowns with Sondheim on the piano. But if you have heard the original LPs, Buyer Beware! Shame on you, RCA!!!

3 out of 5 stars Atrocious! Dont be fooled!.......2000-04-29

This recording is really realllllllllly bad. The songs are terrific, of course, although the selection seems rahter arbitrary. And it is terrific to have a recording of lost gems like House of Marcus Lycus and Invocation. But otherr than that, this CD just stinks! The arrangements were scaled down to a piano (which really seems like its being piped in from a different concert hall) and a wince-inducing synthesizer. The voices are uniformly distant and tinny, the result - i assume - of poor mic placement. And WHO is this Stephen Jacob person, and how did he get it into his head that he's a singer? Every time he opens his mouth - I kid you not - I shudder. I was kind on this CD - I give it 3 stars only because it has some great songs on it, and Judy Kaye's Another Hundred People is very very good. But other than that, this is worthless.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful recording of some great Sondheim.......2000-04-13

I was at this concert, and this recording captures the excitement that the performers generated that night. A lot of Sondheim's best songs, and a generally strong group of singers. It's unfortunate that the CD release is missing two of the numbers that were performed that evening (and were included on the original LP release). Judy Kaye's "Being Alive" is a particularly glorious highlight of this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars I just wish I'd been there!.......1999-09-09

Live performances are tricky to record, and the result is often not nearly as satisfying as attendance at the event itself. This album, though, is different. "Brilliant" about sums it up. Besides including numbers that had been part of recorded scores before, it includes some that were cut from various musicals, or were never produced at all. Not only is Bob Gunton's performance of "Pretty Little Picture" far better than that on the original "Forum" cast album, it is, I think, done more in the fashion Sondheim intended. And two of the "cut" "Forum" numbers are delicious: "In the House of Marcus Lycus" is delightfully sly and filled with double-entendre, and George Hearn revels in the witty lyrics; and "There's Something About A War" is screamingly funny, especially at the point the soldiers lose control gloating about "houses to destroy --Hey! women to enjoy-- hey! statues to deface - hey! - mothers to debase - hey!...". Even the wonderful scoring for small ensemble works perfectly. (In "Something about a war" the fanfare, in the original cast album scored for brass, is performed by a synthesizer, and sounds wonderfully satirical, reminding one of Marvin Martian from the Warner Brothers cartoons.) The numbers from the (at the time) unproduced "Saturday Night" are great, especially Victoria Mallory's ecstatic "What More Do I Need?". The rendition of the moving "Someone In A Tree" is indeed, as others have pointed out, far better than on the "Pacific Overtures" album. And as a final pair of jewels we are treated to Angela Lansbury singing "Send In the Clowns", accompied by Sondheim himself, and then Sondheim and company singing "Old Friends" I could go on and on, but you get the picture. NOW, get the CD!

4 out of 5 stars Jupiter Affect rocks the nation!.......2001-12-26

A long time ago in a distant land there was a fantastic band called The Salvation Army. Eventually they became The Three O'Clock and oh, the music they made. Band leader Michael Quercio always had a knack for delivering a true power pop punch. With his new band, Jupiter Affect, this punch is among the best he's ever delivered. With the mighty guitar of Jason Shapiro (formerly of the astounding Celebrity Skin-one of the greatest live bands ever!) Michael's songs here are propelled to heights not fully achieved in the 3 O'Clock. Imagine The Hollies with Brian May on guitar and you might have an idea of what's happening here. Pop? 100% Yes. Powerful? 100% Yes as well. Catchy? Obviously! It's all about the melodies and the power chords. Blast this one (and their also fantastic first EP) out and rock your world. Did I use enough adjectives here?

4 out of 5 stars Jupiter Affect finally delivers.......2000-03-21

I've listened to the Jupiter Affect since their PGL days. Their "Instructions..." CD is their best work to date. Their irreverence and non-conventional styles really come together in this CD. I mostly like the juxtaposition of alchemy with a pop beat. Listening to this CD has made up for the wasted time spent listening to their previous works.

    I recommend it highly.

This CD is one of the best CD's of my collection. I really like "petty motivation" and "so why do you like me now?". This CD rocks. Although I have never been to one of their concerts, their CD is probably just as good. IT'S A GREAT CD!

don't waste your money on this CD-is one of the most annoying CD's I have ever heard. I am annoyed at myself for buying it.Some of the tunes were hard to reconize, they are that bad.The only reason it gets one star is because there is no lower rating.

BALLROOM DANCING - Chris Kalogerson & Orchestra

Experienced ballroom dancers, read no further--this CD is not for you. The tempo on most of these selections is painfully slow, suitable for beginner's practice. One can almost hear the dancer counting "1-2-3" in the waltz (85 BPM), or "slow-slow-quick-quick" on the fox-trots. The Latin selections lack the fire and energy associated with this type music. On the two rumba selections (Spanish Eyes & Day in the Life of a Fool) the tempo is OK. On the cha-chas the rhythm is understated, and difficult for an inexperienced dancer to follow. A tip-off should be that this CD has "Dance Instructions Enclosed." Descriptions of the basic step of seven dances (with numbered foot-diagrams) is enclosed. A novelty is the inclusion of the "Butterfly" dance word-description. Track # 8, "Little Brown Jug," is labeled "Butterfly," and has the expected repeated changes of tempo from 3/4 to 2/4.
